Joachin Sorolla...

A tribute in black and white.

By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com Until 16 January, La Casa del Cable, Jávea, will host the exhibition Sorolla in his paradise. The painter's photo album, which concentrates on the artist’s love for our area. The year 2021 marked the 125th anniversary of Joachin Sorolla's discovery of the beautiful town of Jávea; the internationally renowned artist’s first ever visit here was in 1896.

His delight at the beauty and the variety of its coastline, compared with his hometown of Valencia, are evident in a telegram he dispatched to his wife on his arrival: "Sublime Jávea. Immense. The best I have come across for painting."

Sorolla was instantly seduced by the luminosity of the Jávea area. Shadow and light play a vital part in his art making this region ideal for his purpose. "Light is the life of everything it touches, so the more light in a painting, the more life, more truth, more beauty" the artist

Sorolla’s primary interests were in capturing landscapes and outdoor scenes, as were the leading French impressionists of the time. His technique, described as “luminism”, involved a blotting technique that perfectly captures the iridescent vibrancy of the Mediterranean sky, often a backdrop for beach and fishing scenes, complemented by beating sails, golden sands and small, damp bodies emerging gleefully from the waves.

Sorolla’s art is all about creating "the impression", while infusing his subject with an intensity of vibrant colours. At the same time in France, the impressionists - Monet, Gauguin, Seurat, Matisse, Braque - were being inspired by their own, more local, new found intensity of light on the Côte d’Azur.

From fishing scenes to raisin drying and family walks on the beach all Sorolla’s paintings are imbibed with the fantastic light that surrounds Jávea. Many of them feature El Cabo de San Antonio and its colourful rocks, painted at different times of day. His colours are pure -without blending – composed of short, juxtaposed brushstrokes that increase in brightness.

Sorolla's adored wife Clothilde was his muse and the power behind the throne. She masterminded his social encounters as well as international exhibitions from America to Venice and Paris; when apart they exchanged letters daily.

Sorolla travelled throughout Europe, meeting and striking up friendships with most of the great painters of the time. In time, he too would join their ranks.

On his foreign travels he regularly purchased the latest fabrics and fashions for his wife and daughters, which he would record in his work. As a result, Sorolla was the perfect chronicler of the changes that took place in trends and styles in clothing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His paintings offer an evocative catalogue of dresses, jewels and accessories of the time, all recorded by his loose, dynamic brushstrokes. In 2018, the Museum National Thyssen Bornemisza in Madrid dedicated an exhibition to Sorolla and fashion.

Sorolla was an amazingly prolific artist: his body of work consists of almost three thousand paintings and over twenty thousand drawings and sketches. He is widely acclaimed as the most accomplished of the Spanish impressionists, with his unique interpretation of the intensity of light, while blurring colors and forms.

Sorolla’s life had a sad beginning, he was orphaned at an early age but, fortunately, his adoptive parents recognised his exceptional talent and encouraged it. He started exhibiting paintings at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid in his late teens, and in 1881, was accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. This fascinating photographic exhibition gives an insight into the man, the artist, his family life and much more.

The N-332 are a group of Spanish Traffic Police Officers who decided to create a Facebook group to inform all ex-pats and tourists about Spanish traffic laws as they think it is unfair to fine them for breaking rules they didn't know about. HOW TO DRIVE ON ROUNDABOUTS How to drive correctly on roundabouts is one of the biggest issues in road safety and the one that starts the most arguments! We all think we know how to do it correctly, but we always find a driver who does it wrong. So, who is right? We will answer this question here.

- BEFORE ENTERING… It is important to not forget that priority is given to whom is already on the roundabout.

- Which lane do we choose to enter the roundabout?

If the roundabout is interurban you have to travel in the right hand lane.

If the roundabout is inside of town and the lanes are delimited, we can use the one that best suits our destination, according to the exit we are going to take.

- TO EXIT; This is where the issue seems to lie... Which lane do you choose? Why do they beep at us if we have done it correctly? Who hasn’t asked themselves these questions at some point? You must ALWAYS, we repeat, YOU MUST ALWAYS leave a roundabout from the right hand lane, because the only option to leave it is to turn right. A very simple rule that gets complicated in practice.

Careful though! This does not mean that we always have to join a roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we are going to take...

- If we are exiting on the right: We will have to enter the roundabout in the outer lane and remain in it until we exit. Before leaving the roundabout, do not forget to use your indicators to signal the manoeuvre to the rest of the road users.

- If we are going to continue straight: We will access the roundabout in the outer lane and we will remain there. We will signal that we are leaving the roundabout just after we have passed the previous exit to ours.

- If we are turning left or changing direction: We will enter the roundabout using the left hand lane. We will remain in it until we pass the previous exit to ours. Then we will change to the right hand lane to leave, we will do it in advance, we will signal the manoeuvre to warn the rest of the drivers and we cannot forget that those driving in the outer lane have priority.

We hope that this information will be useful to you and that you put it into practice when next using a roundabout, the more people know how to do it correctly, the less chance there is of an accident occuring.

Key Dates for Financial Calendar

W

e hope everyone had a lovely festive period and we are looking forward to the New Year ahead. Let's hope there are less Covid variants this time round and we can get back to normal life.

Given that we are at the very start of the year, we thought it was a timely opportunity to remind Spanish tax residents of their fiscal obligations throughout the year. Below are some key dates to look out for in the calendar.

Remember, the Spanish tax year runs in line with the normal calendar year, from 1st January to 31st December. This could be different to other countries systems; for example, the UK's, which runs from 6th April to the following 5th April.

- Modelo 720 Declaration: This is a non-taxable Worldwide Asset declaration which needs to be completed by the 31st March 2022. Spanish tax residents should declare all overseas assets (outside of Spain) which have a value of 50,000€ or more. The value taken for each asset is calculated as per its value of 31st December the previous year and includes bank deposits, investments, and property.

- “La Renta” Income Tax Return: This is the generic income tax return which most people will have experienced in the past. The income tax return has to be completed by the 30th June 2022 but is often done as early as May, allowing accountants to get ahead of the game. Spanish tax residents have an obligation to declare and pay tax on any Worldwide Income which is outside of any exemptions/ allowances. Each person has at least a 5,550€ personal allowance to offset against income, which rises depending on age and other factors.

- Wealth Tax “Impuesto de Patrimonio”: This tax applies to both residents and non-residents alike but only affects individuals with significant estates.

Any tax liability starts after the personal allowance has been deducted; set at between 500.000€ and 700.000€ per person, depending on which autonomous region you live in within Spain (500.000€ in the Valencian Community). There are also additional allowances for main residences.

The declaration for this tax has to be done at the same time as La Renta, i.e. by the 30th June 2022.

It may be that some (or all) of the above declarations are not applicable to you given your circumstances but if you have any doubts whatsoever, we would strongly recommend that you check your position.

At the end of last year there was the inauguration of Ánimæ Altea, located on the second floor of the emblematic Altea Club de Golf in Altea la Vella.

Juanje Ruiz and Víctor Rico, entrepreneurs from Benidorm, with more than 10 years dedicated to improving people's health, decided to expand their business by opening their second centre in Altea.

Why is a Moor’s face carved into Alicante castle?

Next time you visit Alicante, stand by Postiguet beach, look up at Santa Bárbara Castle and on the left side you will see a Moor’s face etched in the rocks.

Legend says this is the face of a Moorish ruler or Caliph mourning the untimely death of his daughter, Princess Cántara.

Cántara had fallen in love with a romantic young man called Ali. But the Caliph thought he was an unsuitable suitor for a princess.

Thankfully, or so he thought, there was another man interested in marrying Cántara - Almanzor, a brave general from Cordoba.

The Caliph set a challenge for the two love rivals - Almanzor was to sail to India to bring home the finest silks and spices. Ali was to build a ditch that would bring much-needed water from Tibi, 30 kilometres from Alicante, to the castle.

Ali forgot about his task and spent all his days reading love poems to the princess. That was until the general returned with a fine array of coloured silks and aromatic spices. Ali rushed to Tibi to start his challenge but realised he was too late and threw himself to the bottom of a ravine and died. Walk Your Way Well

Without doubt 2021 has been a challenging year. I'm feeling quite shaky and flaky as I try to hold it together and power on with living life to the fullest. All the while trying to “get it right” when the right thing to do seems to be a confusing and complicated conundrum these days.

I think in 2022 we need to try to seek an existence that does not get lost in all the rules, regulations, opinions and discussions that we are bombarded with in the media and in our very own close knit inner circles. We are all flawed, perfectly imperfect human beings with an entitlement to our own approach to how to live as best we can. We need to embrace our differences once again. We had come so very far and now our diversity is once again becoming dangerously problematic.

So maybe instead of a New Years Resolution to do that keto diet, take up running or finally quit smoking we should focus on a resolution to be more tolerant, understanding, diplomatic and sensitive. Being absolutely committed to how we live our lives CAN work harmoniously with allowing others to lead their lives differently. We are witnessing profound gulfs being cultivated between neighbours, friends and communities in these strange days, and it is down to each individual to bridge these divisions with a calm and kind open heart.

Our mental health is being challenged on a global scale as the pressure on our emotional mind seems to take hit after hit as things unfold and develop as the weeks and months fly by. We simply MUST look after ourselves at a basic fundamental level to survive and overcome these external daily tensions. To help us thrive in a time of strife we can focus on the simple things: good nutrition, exercise and a good nights sleep! And, if we are courageous enough, we should absolutely consider removing toxic relationships from our lives... Whether they be with people, alcohol or other bad habits. Make that break!

If you do not know where to start I can offer one piece of advice. And if you read my article regularly you will know what that will be.

Yes, it's obvious: Go Walking. Walking in nature is one of the easiest, most therapeutic and highly rewarding activities you can undertake to clear your mind. Step away from the media hype, walk away from the family squabbles and switch off from the noise in your head by finding a local route that gives you the gift of a forest or a muddy track or a coastal view. You deserve that time to contemplate and disconnect. And as you ramble things WILL become clearer and quieter in your head. Trust me!

In 2022 Walk Your Way Well will be organising both local, virtual and further afield (subject to travel restrictions) events and walking excursions. The “Mountain a Month” Challenge will be launched on January 1st. The online 28 Day Walk Your Way Well Challenge will launch on February 1st. Rubbish Walks Denia and Rubbish Walks Javea will be organising more wonderful family events. And I am all ears to hear your suggestions for gatherings or fundraiser events that will help improve our community connection and personal well-being. Believe me, I know how hard these times are. We ALL have a story to tell right now. Nobody is coming out of this unscathed. But if we set our minds to it we can learn and grow and prosper as people. I'm here. I'm ready to “Walk & Talk” and I'm hopeful that in 2022 we will find our wellness if we seek it.

Magnum Productions presents Ges Rogers Union Gap

Our first concert in 2022 will feature the fabulous talents of Ges Rogers Union Gap. This very popular group has roots going back to the 60s and 70s and their extensive repertoire includes all the hits from this iconic band, including Young Girl, Lady Willpower, Woman Woman, Over You, and many many more.

U3A Calpe News & events Following a very successful toy collection at Christmas last year, U3A Calpe was able, once again, to support the local branch of Cruz Roja in their work with needy families in the town, U3A members were asked to donate toys, games, baby food, nappies and other baby supplies, or cash this year. A very successful hand- over was organised recently, thanks to valuable assistance from La Flor Del Cafe in the Plaza Central, Calpe, where space was made available for the committee members to take delivery of items brought in by members.

Four trolley loads of gifts and baby items were handed over to representatives of Cruz Roja, along with cash donations of 500 Euros. With over forty babies under six months of age needing help and around 50 children hoping for a gift at the festival of the three kings, the support offered by U3A Calpe to Cruz Roja will make a difference.

Christmas Dinner and Dance The Calpe U3A Dinner Dance at Puerto Blanco Restaurant was a wonderful and magical time where we ate, drank and dressed in our finery. Many thanks to everyone for attending and a special thanks to Father Marcus for the music and creating an amazing atmosphere.

REACHING THE SUMMIT - THE CHURCH ON THE MOUNTAIN Benitachell Christian Fellowship extend a warm and bright welcome to all at our new building, adjoining the Fire Station on the Cumbre del Sol.

Founded in 2010, our English-speaking, inter-denominational Church now settles just below the Lady Elizabeth School on the beautiful Cumbre, which translates to “Summit of the Sun”.

El Puig, the very visible green and white building with ample parking, is kindly provided by Benitachell Town Council and very gratefully received. The solid structure of the Fire Station is “poles apart” from the virtual presence of the church as it rose to the challenge of bringing people together in support, hope, faith and camaraderie during lockdown.

So, here we are, now bursting with enthusiasm for this new phase, and we are ready to welcome you on Sundays at 11am for a time of praise, prayer and worship. Not forgetting the socials, indoor and outdoor prayers, studies, courses, games mornings and walks we can enjoy too!

Although the popular November Extravaganza was not possible this year because of Covid restrictions, Jávea U3A did put on a pre-Christmas show to remember at Dance Café, Toscamar!

A limited number of members were lucky enough to enjoy an alternative feast of festive fun at Dance Café, Toscamar. Splendidly compered by Vice-President Claude Grealy in the style of TV’s Good Old Days’ Music Hall legend Leonard Sachs, the event entertained – in the words of Sachs “for our delight and delectation!”

There were presentations to retiring executive committee members and lockdown Zoom presenters. There were gifts for retiring Vice-President Peter Allin as well as members Angela Chantry, Alan Oliver and Peter Atkinson, who entertained during lockdown with Zoom presentations. Retiring Membership Secretary Stan Staines was also thanked in his absence and will receive his gift when he returns to Spain from the UK. Non-executive committee members Jacqui Rogerson (Deputy Secretary) and Linda Coughlin (Meet & Greet) were also recognised for their contributions and there were special thanks to Secretary Margaret March for all her work and IT expertise in setting up the Zoom presentations. After the formalities, members enjoyed food and drink while being entertained by the excellent singer/guitarist Dave Peachy.

The event also raised 350€ for the U3A’s charity of the year, Make A Smile, plus some donations of notepads, pens and other gifts for the children they support.

TRANSLATORS - What languages do you speak? We have people from many different countries and at times we need help filling out forms or liaising with Consulates, Social Services, Town Halls etc. Sign up today so we know we have the help when it’s rarely needed.

Project 4 All Half Way Home for men opened its doors on the 1st May 2021 to the first two candidates, more recently we have been able to open our women's Half Way Home. In these homes we receive a selected group of people to help them re-socialise back to society, people who are tired of their lifestyle on the street and want to change their situation. We can help with addiction problems, schooling, work and further insight into housing through social services. At the moment our project is being financed by the sale of secondhand clothing at the Karunawa Charity Shop in Jávea and entirely depends on the donations we receive.

Celebrating pomegranates and dates from Elche

Elche is famous for many things - shoes, football, its unique Mystery Play El Misteri d'Elx taking place in the Basilica of Santa María, and being home to the largest palm grove in Europe.

It is believed there are between 200,000 to 300,000 palm trees in the city today. The original palm grove is said to date back to Phoenician times around 2,000 to 2,500 years ago. This green oasis is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and provides a calm, shady spot within the city centre.

It certainly impressed Danish author Hans Christian Andersen who wrote in A Journey through Spain in 1862: “As we approached Elche, we could already make out its valley resplendent with fruits and its immense Palm Grove, the most extensive and most beautiful in Europe, the most luxuriant in all of Spain.”

Many typical Elche products are made with dates including pan de dátil cake made with dates and almonds, date liqueur, and delicias de Elche, which is a tapas dish of dates stuffed with almond and wrapped in bacon.

The palms can be seen throughout the world during Palm Sunday processions while the dates are sold in local shops, Elche indoor market and at a stall in the Huerto del Cura garden - where you'll also find the famous and very rare Imperial Palm shaped like a candelabra - as well as online.

As well as palm trees, other Spanish Mediterranean fruits such as pomegranate, carob, lemon and orange are cultivated in the Huerto del Cura (Priest’s Garden). The Mollar pomegranate from Elche is one of the most valued pomegranates in the world and is renowned for its sweetness. It is also one of the so-called superfruits as it is rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. These fruits are used in many dishes created in Elche restaurants, including pomegranate ice-cream.

WISH TO SEE CLINT EASTWOOD, LEE VAN CLEEF AND ELI WALLACH AGAIN? Then come to Burgos and relive it like a cowboy from the American West; you will freak out!

Sad Hill Cemetery was built between the Burgos municipalities of Contreras and Santo Domingo de Silos, to shoot the final scene of the movie ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’. This is where the 15-minute classic movie scene was shot and in Burgos you can relive it at Sad Hill Cemetery.

It was the summer of 1966 when the Italian film director Sergio Leone was in Spain locating exterior settings. Leone had already shot some of his famous spaghetti westerns in the Tabernas Desert in Almeria. The film he was shooting needed a stage with a bridge and a river, something he would hardly find in the province of Almería. He found it in the Arlanza river valley, in the Sierra de la Demanda.

The Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza was transformed into the Mission San Antonio. Near the municipality of Carazo, the unionist Fort Betterville was erected. The Arlanza river became the Rio Grande’s Langstone Bridge. In the Mirandilla Valley, remarkably close to Santo Domingo de Silos, the Sad Hill Cemetery was built where the final scene of the film was shot.

Leone had the help of the Spanish army to build the circular Sad Hill Cemetery. More than 5,000 ‘graves’ were created. Most of them had their own wooden cross. After filming the place was abandoned. Over the years, vegetation covered the graves; the wooden crosses rotted.

In 2013, with the intention of recovering the film scenes for tourism purposes, the Sad Hill Cultural Association emerged. Its members took months to unearth the cemetery's original central cobblestone, scene of the big shootout between Clint Eastwood,

Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach. Two years later, on the fiftieth anniversary of the shooting of the film, the association began to recover ‘graves’ in the cemetery. Thousands of volunteers cleared vegetation and breathed new life into this gigantic setting.

Since 2016, the association has managed to recover more than 1,500 ‘graves.’ It has done through a somewhat macabre patronage campaign. For only 15 euros, anyone could have a headstone with a name in Sad Hill Cemetery. This original campaign spread across the globe, with requests coming from everywhere. An American fan of the film even tried to have his ashes deposited here after his death.

Among the tombs that already have a name is one dedicated to the director Sergio Leone, another to the unknown soldier. The success of the financial campaign was so astonishing it is now closed.

The access track that goes to Sad Hill cemetery is three kilometres from Contreras and four from Santo Domingo de Silos. Once there the cemetery is open to visitors. Take time to stroll among the endless rows of crosses. Discover inscriptions that will surprise.

The Chicas Amigas group held their Christmas gathering at the Olive Tree restaurant in Moraira, all efficiently producing their Covid passports for inspection on the way in, together with a present for the Secret Santa table.

After a super traditional turkey meal enjoyed by all, Santa's Elves scurried round delivering beautifully wrapped presents to tables as numbers were called. Thank you very much to Lynn and the staff of the Olive Tree, who made the event so enjoyable.

Taking up a sport is a super way to keep fit and meet new people. If you’ve played and enjoy tennis, padel could be your new favourite sport in Spain.

What is padel?

Padel is a racquet sport played on an enclosed court, which is about 25% smaller than a tennis court. It is played in doubles and you can play on indoor or outdoor courts.

It is widely considered to have been invented

by Enrique Corcuera in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1962. He couldn't build a tennis court at his home because a wall was in the way, so he built another wall to enclose his court - and padel was born.

Now it’s a fast-growing sport because it’s fun to play, easy to pick up and there are padel courts all over the Costa Blanca.

Although you can play single padel, it is usually played in doubles. You use a stringless padel bat to hit the ball over the net that divides the court.

Like tennis, the aim is to hit the ball so your opponents cannot return it.

The 13th Dec 2021 saw the opening of our new premises in La Plaza, Jávea by our local Mayor Jose Chulvi and Vice Consul of Alicante Sara Munsterhjelm.

Cancer Care Javea charity has been supported by many people for over 20 years and had two great shops in Jávea Park but was missing a home - a heart. A place that brings the members, volunteers, customers, and nurses together.

We are proud to welcome you to and announce the opening of our new Home.

- Chic Boutique, selling ladies clothing and accessories for any occasion.

- An official office for the Charity, a place where the Members and the Committee can get together and hold meetings.

- But more importantly a wonderful calm space for our dedicated Lynwen Cancer Care NursingTeam.

A peaceful setting where they can gather as a team but also meet patients and families supporting them through this difficult journey.

The beginning of a new chapter for Cancer Care Javea, bringing everyone together, supporting the vision and objective to raise funds to provide research, care and advice as well as personal and professional nursing services across the Costa Blanca.

We sincerely thank ALL our volunteers who give their time for free and work tirelessly in our 2 shops, Your willingness to give freely of your time and commitment is greatly appreciated, and your efforts continue to allow us make a difference in the community.

Think like a prospective Spanish property buyer Cast a critical eye over the front of your property. Do the walls need cleaning or painting?

What are the windows like? Is the door looking old - does it need painting, varnishing or replacing? Clean everything. Wash down the walls. Make the windows sparkle. Scrub the tiles.

Keep the colours neutral If you are going to paint the exterior, keep the colours neutral - white or off-white. You may love bright, bold colours but it could put off potential buyers.
