A charitable Christmas at Specsavers Ópticas
The team at Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea and Calpe want to thank all their generous customers, staff and local residents who got involved with their Christmas collections. Thanks to their generosity, the Jávea store was able to donate four boxes of food to representatives of Cáritas Parroquial Xabia. These donations will be distributed among the many families in vulnerable situations in Jávea that are supported by Caritas. This charity provides food and helps people with their individual needs, such as clothing, housing costs etc. They also run workshops to help people gain the skills they need to find work, and get out of the difficult situation that they find themselves in. This food collection is part of Specsavers Ópticas Jávea’s ongoing commitment to supporting this excellent charity. In 2022, they signed an agreement for the optician to donate one pair of glasses per month to the charity. This will continue in 2024. You can find out more about Cáritas and the incredible work they do on their website www.caritas.es The Calpe store raised €468.42 for the Akira Animal Sanctuary in Benissa, collected sturdy toys, leads and collars for the dogs and were a drop-off point for donations for the sanctuary’s charity shop throughout December and into January. The funds raised for Akira will go towards their campaign to buy pergolas to give the dogs shade and plastic sand pits to act as splash pools during the summer, as well as to complete their new agility and training area. A good question and I can offer you a number of answers. I started my company nearly 30 years ago, working from home and developing the business slowly over a number of years. Once established, I employed staff and rented a large office in Jávea port, where I am still to this day. How life has changed for me, and for the better. I realised when I moved to Spain, that there was very little help available and what was available was normally in Spanish. There was no private health insurance, no funeral plans and no insurance dedicated to the Expat, and little customer service. I started the business selling health insurance for a British company, along with funeral plans. Having lost my husband in Spain, I realised how difficult it was to arrange a funeral and the costs were enormous. Being very disciplined myself (probably due to my time in the Air Force), I have a strong work ethic. I used to work from home during the day, and I would go out early evenings making home visits until I was busy enough to take someone on to help me. From those early days when I worked tirelessly, I built my company and now have 7 offices. I demand from my excellent and loyal staff that they treat all my clients with respect, courtesy and honesty and offer them the best service that is possible. I pride myself that the after sales service is the best, a service very rare in Spain. www.femalefocusonline.com As I write this I am packing my life away in boxes and trying to downsize. Apparently, according to the other half, I am not trying hard enough.
During lock-down I Marie Kondo'ed our house and got rid of a LOT of stuff including ornaments, furniture, crockery etc that we had been trailing along from one house to the next. I didn't really like or need any of it in my life and was fed up dusting and moving it around. This means that I now like everything I have and so down-sizing is not going well. Also, until you get into a place, you can't know if you will need, or have room for certain things so they have to go with you just in case, don't they? Our grandson (5 years old) is not happy that other people will be living in our house and feels we should keep it for them to live in when they get fed up with their house. Granddaughter just wanted to make sure there was an oven in the new place so we could still do baking. I love how little minds work. Until next time, take care and be kind.

BRILLIANT WOMEN IN ASTRONOMY

Astronomy is an unusual science, for centuries it has appealed to, and been advanced by women as well as men, often despite the peculiar social attitudes prevalent in much of history. This is a great, great blessing because it effectively doubles the amount of talent available. A few years ago I wrote about how many prominent women there have been in the history of astronomy, from Hypatia in ancient Alexandria to Jocelyn Bell and her discovery of pulsars in the 1960s. Incidentally, a pulsar emits a rapid beeping radio signal which for a short time made people wonder if it was from aliens, so it got nicknamed LGM 1, short for little green men. It’s time I brought all this up to date. Astronomy is still attracting a lot of very clever women, from our little group, which is nearly an equal mix of the sexes, to all the different specialist branches of astronomy, and to astronauts. Katherine Johnson is a name you might know, she was featured in the film Hidden Figures, about the early days of NASA, and she was a human computer, who did the calculations to launch the first spacecraft and have a safe re-entry. Do you remember the name Helen Sharman? She was Britain’s first person into space. Carolyn Porco is sometimes called the rock star of space science, she has worked since the 1980s interpreting the results from spacecraft visiting the outer planets. When you see an amazing picture of Pluto taken from space, that’s probably her work. When asked where she spent most of her time working she once replied ‘amongst the rings of Saturn’. Almost everyone has heard of dark matter, probably the biggest puzzle in modern cosmology, the ‘most of the universe is missing’ puzzle. Did you know it was a lady who first discovered it? Vera Rubin is her name, and she penned the galaxy rotation problem. She was also the first women to have a large observatory named after her, the Rubin observatory in Chile. There’s also a group of women hardly anyone has heard of, the Mercury 13. They were a group of accomplished women pilots who were given the same tests as the men to be astronauts, it was only a presidential decision in 1960 that dashed their hopes. I could go on and on with a seemingly endless list of past and current people, there are so many in planetary science, solar physics cosmology etc. Compare astronomy with the medical profession, women make great doctors, but it was nearly impossible for them until modern times, and not long ago some people hated the idea of female aircraft pilots. I wonder what they would think of the many female astronauts. If you like a bit of hard science, this bit would have upset some blokes in the past. Women’s physiology is better suited to space travel than men’s. It’s all to do with hydration levels and oxygen consumption against energy expenditure. This has been known for a long time, but the engineering challenges in making decent personal plumbing equipment for zero gravity were very hard. Maybe in the future I’ll write about the evolution of the space toilet! I’ll finish this month with a stunning picture of astronaut Stacy Caldwell Dyson in the cupola of the International space station. We hope they are of interest! Q: What is the difference between a Financial Planner and a Financial Adviser? A: A Financial Planner generally takes a holistic approach to financial planning, considering all assets and liabilities a person or couple have. These details, coupled with the investor’s goals and objectives, provide the base to formulate a financial plan, which a Financial Planner will generally back up with the use of longevity forecasts or cashflow modelling. A Financial Adviser on the other hand tends to be more product-orientated and focus on the investment recommendations themselves, which can also include selecting the asset allocation and underlying funds for the client. Q: From my perspective (client), why is it important for a Financial Planner or Adviser to have qualifications and licences in place? What does this mean in practice aside from sounding good for you? A: When clients deal with a licenced firm, they can be safe in the knowledge they are receiving fully regulated advice, which adheres to the ever-tightening compliance requirements. There is a complaints procedure in place via the official channels and potentially compensation should it be deemed unsuitable advice was given. In direct comparison, receiving advice from a company that is not regulated can lead to unsuitable products, hidden charges and importantly no protection should anything go wrong. Individual qualifications showcase your financial planner or adviser’s credentials, with many regulated networks nowadays insisting on a certain qualification for advisers to join. Q: Do you think the level of advice here in Spain is as good as in the UK? A: Unfortunately not… but it is slowly improving. The UK is seen as one of the leading jurisdictions in the world when it comes to financial regulation and often sets new laws aiming to increase consumer protection and transparency before anyone else. These regulations do tend to feed into Europe but it takes time, which can still lead to mis-selling of products and hidden commissions. Having said that, there are some good companies here in Spain who work in line with UK best practices like us, but others are having to adjust their business models, which will only be beneficial for clients moving forward. Q: When it comes to reviewing an existing portfolio or recommending a new one to a client, what things do you look out for above others? A: There are many aspects to consider when reviewing an investment portfolio but key areas of concern are risk, cost, diversification, performance and reputation of the fund provider. Whether there have been any major recent changes within the fund manager’s team is also something to be aware of. The Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation. When is it recommended to operate on bunions? It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like. If you're thinking of trying something new for 2024, then how about joining a choir? Several choirs in the northern Costa Blanca are looking for new members to join them for the coming year. Singing is great fun and also does a lot of good in terms of mental health, brain function and also meeting new like-minded people. VALL DEL POP SINGERS The Vall del Pop Singers meet on a Tuesday afternoon in Alcalalí and enjoy singing well-known pop songs and classic standards. There is no need to read music or to sing in harmony. The groups approach is just to have fun singing together, and although they occasionally sing in public there is no requirement for all members to take part in these performances if you do not want to. CANTÃMUS Cantãmus choir rehearse on a Monday morning in La Fustera and are more serious in their approach. The aim of the group is still to have fun, but by singing spiritual, uplifting or inspirational music. Their programmes are always full of feel-good songs that leave the audience feeling happier than when they arrived. Cantãmus do sing in four-part harmony, although it is not essential to read music as Philip Ashley, the Musical Director, provides rehearsal tracks with the various harmony lines playing so members can learn and rehearse at home with or without sheet music. SOUNDS FAMILIAR Although Sounds Familiar is a theatre group and not a choir, all of their shows are about singing. The group specialises in musical theatre and love performing excerpts from all the well-known shows that have been on Broadway or the West End, including current shows that are still running. The group does sing in harmony and performs in costume, although there is no requirement to read music as Philip provides the necessary rehearsal tracks. The group rehearses on Monday evenings in Benissa close to the motorway junction. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE FUN? By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com As Roman Catholics, Spaniards have great fondness for their religious holidays, which is just as well since every single day in the calendar is named after at least one specific saint, sometimes even two. Saint Valentine, or Valentinus, who symbolises health, kindness and love, is usually represented with a palm leaf and a sword, symbols of matrimonial union. The feast day of St Valentine had a rather unusual beginning, dating back to 3rd century Rome. During this historical period, a priest named Valentine was engaged in marrying young lovers on the quiet. The ceremonies had to be conducted in secret, as such unions were forbidden by the ruling Emperor Claudius II, who claimed that young, unmarried men – without sentimental attachments – were the most useful in war. Nevertheless, the brave priest Valentine agreed to flout the orders of the Emperor and continued to perform marriage ceremonies under the radar until, eventually, the inevitable happened. Claudius II found out about the ceremonies Valentine had conducted and ordered the death of the priest. The sentence was carried out on February 14th, in the year 270, when Valentine was beheaded. Ever since, the date has been given to honouring the priest remembered as Saint Valentine, as a romantic hero who bravely defied the law – on pain of death – in the name of love. Of course, this is just one interpretation of events that led to 14th February becoming a special date for lovers. Like all such myths and legends there are several versions that have found popularity over the years. However, the sad story of the 3rd century romantic Roman priest has greater widespread credence than any of the others. It was not until the 19th century that Anglo-Saxon countries began to celebrate the date when, according to records, February 14th became a popular date for couples to exchange love letters and tokens of affection, including flowers. The American artist and entrepreneur Esther Howland (1828–1904), is believed to have played an important part in further popularising the spread of Valentine Day celebrations by designing and producing a special range of greeting cards in the United States and the practise is believed to have enthusiastically spread from there. As in many other places in the world, celebration of the relatively new and much less romantic ‘Single’s Day’ – believed to have originated in China – is gaining ground in Spain. This is a date to recognise the joys and pride of being single, rather than being in a relationship. While the Chinese typically celebrate this holiday on 11th November (11/11 because 1 is said to be the loneliest number), in other parts of the world, including Spain, it is known as El Día de los Solteros, Single’s Day, and celebrated the day before Valentine’s Day, on 13th February, when those not involved in a relationship give themselves treats and special gifts in celebration of their single status. No doubt there is much to be said in praise of the single lifestyle but little of it in any way related to romance and as yet, no special date has been agreed upon, or assigned to celebrate it globally. Meanwhile, cards, flowers and other love tokens will continue to be exchanged around the world on the 14th of February, in celebration of the life of Saint Valentine, the 3rd century priest who risked his life to join young couples in love in holy matrimony and, ultimately paid the price with his life.

Now is the time to make the move toward artificial grass, as I currently sit here we have had one of the driest years on record (2023) and we’ve still not even really had any rain, some, but barely enough to even dampen the ground. I don’t like being a pessimist, but at this moment in time things aren’t looking very good. The simple facts are our reservoirs are drying up and I can guarantee one thing for sure. If this continues then the water boards will impose watering restrictions on your garden. FYI, it’s really difficult to keep grass in Spain without irrigation and we’ve not even had an annual top up of rainfall to help. I have just had a client request some artificial grass for his garden, but he is still mulling over the prospect of continuing with his natural lawn. I have given him a whole host of reasons not to persevere as for starters he requires an update / extension to his current irrigation which will cost money. Even if his gardener knows what he is doing and top dresses the grass correctly that will be another good chunk of money, then this top dressing will need to be done annually for the next 3 years as there is no guarantee of good ground underneath what is already there. Then there is the monthly watering and maintenance bill from the gardener. I can pretty much say if all work is done correctly, in nearly the year he will have spent the majority of the cost of replacing this area with artificial grass. To me this is crazy and that’s before the possibility of the water board telling you you can’t use water for your lawn, and if seen you may be fined. For me life is about sensible choices and if you can afford to pay now it will save you money and not even really long term, within a year or so, and for me the lack of hassle, the lack of requiring another person to have access to my house and garden, the fact that within a week I could have a perfect green lawn which could possibly outlive me, just seems a pretty sensible option. So, don’t get caught in a trap of being told it can be made good, or being in a situation of having to let your lawn go due to not being able to water it. Alicante-Elche airport enjoyed the best year in its history with 15.7 million passengers flying in and out last year. This is an increase of 19.2% compared to 2022. The previous record was set in 2019, the year before the pandemic, when it had 15 million passengers. Across Spain, 283.2 million airport passengers were registered throughout 2023. The figures place Alicante airport as the fifth busiest in Spain behind Madrid (60.2 million); Barcelona (49.9 million); Palma de Mallorca (31.1 million); and Malaga (22.3 million). Of the total number of travellers who used the Alicante terminal in 2023, 15,727,404 were commercial passengers, of which 13,521,335 travelled on international flights, which represents an increase of 20.4% compared to 2022. The number of passengers travelling on domestic flights was 2,206,069, an increase of 12.8%. Breaking down international traffic by nationality, the United Kingdom came out on top in 2023 with 5,439,533 passengers; followed by the Netherlands, with 1,070,976; Germany, with 895,707; Belgium, with 876,010; and Norway, with 771,762. In terms of operations, the Alicante-Elche airport handled 100,547 flights in 2023, which was an increase of 11.6% compared to the previous year. As for Valencia airport, it also had the best year in its history with 9,948,141 passengers in 2023, breaking its previous record of 8,539,579 passengers in 2019. Most international passengers using Valencia airport were travelling to or from Italy with 1,486,330 travellers; followed by France, with 864,207; Germany, with 850,080; United Kingdom, with 845,922; Netherlands, with 705,589; and Portugal, with 341,799.

A tale of two sunny cities
Alicante and Valencia are among the sunniest cities in Europe, according to a study by World Weather Online which reveals the 30 locations on the continent with the most hours of daylight per month. Alicante tops the list with 349 hours of sunshine on average per month in the capital of the province. World Weather Online carried out the study to find the average hours of sunshine per month in the 300 most populated cities of Europe. Of the top ten European cities alone, there are six Spanish, three Italian and one French. Alicante is first followed by Catania, Murcia, Malaga, Messina, Valencia, Nice, Las Palmas, Granada and Palermo. Although other cities have a higher average temperature per month, these are the ones with more hours of sunshine. In Spain, Seville has the highest average temperature per month: 21º degrees. The Andalusian city is followed by Catania, Murcia, Málaga, Las Palmas and Atenas with 20º degrees, and Alicante with 19º on average.

Careline Theatre Panto Success
Careline Theatre in The Jalon Valley chose the wonderful story of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs as its Pantomime for this year. The pantomime played out to hisses and boos, to cheers and clapping and if you were lucky enough to get a seat then you witnessed quite possibly the funniest 12 days of Christmas ever seen on any stage anywhere. True love and good triumphed and we all went home with our faith in humanity restored. Thank you Careline Theatre, you smashed it out of The Park again. Sqn Ldr (Rtd) Henry Horth MBE AFC 26/01/1921 - 9/01/2024 The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca was saddened to hear of the death of one of its founding Members and former Presidents, Henry Horth, who died on the 9th January in Nairn, Scotland. Henry served in the RAF for 34 years from March 1942 until January 1976. Henry was a founder Member of the Aircrew Association, joining in 1988, and served as its popular President from 2016 until he returned to UK in 2021. The Aircrew Association and Henry’s many friends will miss Henry. He was universally and deservedly much admired and respected but he will be remembered fondly by all those who were fortunate to have known him! RIP Henry!

U3A Denia Day Trip
The latest U3A Denia day trip with fiftythree of our members, enjoyed a guided tour of the THE XI'AN WARRIORS, an international exhibition promoted by the Provincial Council of Alicante via the MARQ, the Archaeological Museum of Alicante. We had a very interesting guided tour provided by Adrian, a well-informed tour guide. The museum in Alicante is certainly worth a visit with many interesting items as well as the special terracotta warrior’s exhibition. Lunch followed at restaurant Bokado in Finestrat and then a visit to the motor museum in Benidorm, another very interesting place. Martin, our guide, introduced us to Herbie and Kit shinning and proudly parked alongside a host of interesting and rare vehicles; and were else could you see three DeLorean’s in one day! Recently 93 U3A Vall del Pop members and followers of the fantastic OK band partied non stop for 5 hours!
On a gloriously sunny day, Terry and Co, 2 of the band members, kindly opened their beautiful home and rehearsal studio for an indoor picnic concert in aid of our Goodwill charity. Goodwill fundraises on behalf of local charities in need and every euro we raise is donated at the end of the year to a variety of local worthy causes. Alain and Elena of the super duo, Multipass, kindly opened the afternoon with a fantastic set while guests enjoyed their picnics and drinks from the bar. The dancing and singing had already started! the incredible OK band then took to the stage and the venue rocked for the next 2.5 hours with non stop dancing and singing along. If you know the band you will be aware how amazing they are, if you don’t then try and catch them at one of their charity events. They are the most generous bunch of people and help many charities to raise funds through their gigs. Last year alone they raised just under 25,000€. A raffle of some 20 great prizes and an auction of champagne, a Burberry wrap and a restaurant voucher kindly donated by the Vall del Pop restaurant in Lliber saw guests very generously donating for which we are immensely grateful. In total the afternoon raised 1952€, a truly fantastic amount. Huge thank yous to everyone who came and supported the event, to the OKs and Multipass who entertained us and to all the helpers. A wonderful 1st Goodwill event of 2024.
NEW MEMBERSHIP SCHEME WITH BENEFITS 4 ALL
Very early this morning, it was below 5° outside with a cold breeze and a very dark, star-studded sky. I felt chilly, even in a house with heating, my warm, dry clothing and hot mug of coffee. It’s heartbreaking to know that there are still many people sleeping rough and spending all days and nights outdoors, without regular food or shelter. Even here in Spain, the elements of winter are brutal for many and help is so desperately needed. This year Project 4 All will be expanding, by delivering hot food, across Jávea to Benidorm, at the weekends as well as the current Monday – Friday schedule. Our goal is to open our first Sleeping House, to provide a safe environment and the opportunity for homeless people to have a hot evening meal, breakfast, shower, use the laundry facilities and to also receive guidance and support for legal, medical, or counselling assistance. For this reason, we are excited to announce the launch of the Project 4 All Membership initiative. For 10€ a month you can be a major part of this change…..and when you support Project 4 All you also benefit from the discounts offered by local businesses, cafes and restaurants. Our regular newsletter will keep you informed of progress and the amazing work of our dedicated team of volunteers. Please join in our support and commitment to those much less fortunate. The membership scheme will provide regular funding to sustain the provision of hot meals, warm clothing, sleeping bags, blankets, tents, basic necessities, support and friendship to people in need, here on the Costa Blanca. We run a shelter for men, a women’s refuge, a food bank and a furniture/bric a brac charity shop, which is supplied by donations of items and our free, house clearance service. We work with other charities, social services and consulates and our amazing team of regular and part time volunteers are committed to helping others in need as well as the homeless. Want to cook for the homeless? Let us know, you can cook from your own home and we will collect the food from you. Drivers are also needed. U3A MARINA BAIXA. LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO?
You need look no further than U3A Marina Baixa where there is always an event or activity available to members every week. Every Tuesday the Computer Group (SMARTIES) meet. Another group meeting every week is the Craft Group where members work on a wide range of crafts. If they don't appeal then maybe the Wine Tasting Group, or Watercolour group, amongst others. Looking further ahead to 7 October, a 4-day trip has been arranged to Toledo to visit the Puy de Fou Park and the spectacular show “Sueño de Toledo”. The Events Team are busy with the early stages of their planning of events for 2024. The initial programme shows: March – 40s evening. April – Fashion show. May – May Fayre in Jalon. The Little Shop of Horrors has devoured the hearts of theatre goers for over 30 years and now, amateur theatre group, “Maskeraid”, are delighted to announce their production of this classic comedy musical. Told in the musical style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo‐wop and rhythm and blues, a down‐and out skid row florist becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a craving for fresh blood — it grows into an ill‐tempered R&B‐ singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. There will be four performances, including a matinee, at Casa de Cultura, Plaça de Baix 6, Jávea on:- 29th February 19:30, 1st March 19:30 and 2nd March 15:00 and 19:30. The Arts Society Marina Alta presents Vincent Van Gogh: Madman or Genius? By Anthony Russell
Date: Mar 6, 2024. Location: Salones Canor (11am) and Casa de Cultura, Javea (7:30pm) This lecture considers exactly why, despite never selling a painting and his committing suicide in poverty, no art historian today denies Van Gogh’s genius. There are extraordinary, little known facts to be revealed, while enjoying the remarkable range of his talent. Though seeming so extreme, the tragic story of his loveless life is deeply moving and his humanity makes a lasting impression. As a cultural historian, writer and artist Anthony Russell has travelled much of the world. Lecturing originally to American university students on bespoke tours of Europe, he has lectured for the Arts Society since 2010. He spent six years as a consultant for Luke Hughes advising on the furniture needs of prestigious buildings throughout Britain, including museums, palaces, and cathedrals. At the British Museum, where for many years he ran outreach events and hosted visiting lecturers, he has been described as "Hugh Grant meets the Dalai Lama.” Salones Canor: Doors open at 10:00 hrs. for registration and coffee.
