THE REAL CONSTELATIONS OF THE ZODIAC

H

ow do you upset a group of astronomers? Simple, just call them astrologers by mistake. Not that we've anything against astrology as entertainment, but we do have a firm belief about which is scientifically valid. So why do I raise that thorny issue, it's because the constellations of the Zodiac are amongst the most interesting in the sky.

I'll start at the beginning, just what are these constellations, and what makes them different? They are the star groups along the line of the ecliptic across our sky. And just what is the ecliptic? It's the path that the Sun, Moon and planets take across our sky.

The constellation Libra is a good place to start, you can find it in the southwest after sunset, and in another month or so, it will be below our horizon, so August is a good time to look. If you get your binoculars out, looking a little way above the horizon you'll see a star that's brighter than those around it, you've found Beta Librae, a star that also has the wonderful name Zubeneschamali.

This looks just like any other star until you learn a bit about it. Light takes nearly 150 years to get to us, and it's a big star. Astronomers call this a type b8, it spins over 100 times faster than our Sun, and it shines over 130 times brighter. It is doing something else too. Most people know that stars fuse, or burn hydrogen to shine, but in some stars, the process evolves, Beta Librae is now burning helium, and the core of the star is changing too. All the natural elements originate in stars, some stars go on to produce iron, carbon, and everything else, it's why we are all made of star stuff, and when you look at Beta Librae, you are seeing an example of where everything comes from.

Have a look at a picture of the constellation, then using your binoculars, try to find the other stars of Libra. It's not the easiest or most distinctive constellation to learn, but it's worth the effort. You'll find a variable star, one that changes brightness over a few days and another giant star. There's also a spherical star cluster tucked away, but you'll need a small telescope to find that.

One last little puzzle is the colour of the star Beta Librae, what colour is it to you? Some people see it as green, others don't, and no one is sure why that is.

TRAVEL INSURANCE nfortunately, due to Brexit, the travel insurance company, whom I have worked extremely well with in excess of 20 years is unable to continue to offer travel insurance to the Expats.

At first, this did not worry me as there was no travel allowed.

However, it seems as though this is changing and people are hoping to be able to have holidays and visit loved ones this summer.

It was therefore necessary to me to discover if there was a company who offered similar cover at reasonable realistic prices.

Fortunately I discovered one of my members of staff had experience with an alternative travel insurance provider, which provides the policies and covers that the Expats are used to. I am so pleased to be able to offer this service to my clients again.

We are in the process of contacting all our travel insurance clients, by email with a follow up call explaining the new policies and issuing quotes.

We can now provide travel insurance for both annual and short trip policies with a choice of three levels of cover and there is an additional option for Covid 19 protection. The policies are underwritten by Lloyds of Belgium, so of course, the company is fully authorised and regulated within the EU. After such a long time of not being able to offer travel insurance because there was no need for it due to the restrictions, I am now full of hope that our long wait is drawing to a close, although I am still feeling apprehensive.

To be able to hug a loved one after such a long time will be such joy. A word that is rather under-used at the moment.

www.femalefocusonline.com I have been enjoying the tomatoes which I planted in order that the grandchildren could see food growing. I thought tomatoes would be easy and fun for them. Apparently not - not only did granddaughter tell me the whole long list of fruit and veg they have been growing at school, she also reminded me that she has an intolerance to tomatoes, which I had completely forgotten about.

Bad grandma - trying to make her sick! It has not put me off though as they are delicious and I will be planting more next year.

We are pleased to welcome two new contributors to the Female Focus magazine this month. Sarah Farrell and Harry King will be providing monthly articles which we hope you will enjoy and find interesting.

With the heat definitely upon us please take care of yourselves, hydrate and keep putting on the sun cream - also be thoughtful of your furry friends as they really struggle in the summer.

emale Focus, the Costa Blanca's foremost publisher of monthly lifestyle magazines, has always had community at its core. It has been serving the community since 1993 with a vital advertising platform for local businesses, and a source of valuable information for the British expat community living on the Costa Blanca. The monthly magazines - Female Focus in the North and QFocus in the South - contain a number of interesting articles which have been sourced from PA Media until recently.

However, it has been felt that whilst interesting, they are not community centric, so not particularly local! The challenge has always been to find a local writer who can deliver 3-4 articles a month, on subjects which have a more local feel.

CBBA to the rescue A few months ago, Sarah Farrell - a professional copywriter - joined the CBBA. After a few discussions about the magazine it became obvious a conversation about writing for Female Focus Publications needed to happen.

“The chance to write about one of my favourite subjects - Spain - in such a popular magazine as Female Focus is very exciting,” said Sarah.

Sarah was a journalist in England before she moved to Dénia in 2005. Since then, she has worked as a newspaper sub-editor, magazine editor, copywriter and a brief stint as a football analyst following Spanish second division teams.

“Joining the CBBA has been a tremendous boost for me,” she added. “I’ve met some very talented professionals - including the Female Focus team - who have great ideas for growing your business and introducing you to new clients.”

Valencia kick off La Liga 2021-22 season against Getafe

La Liga 2021-2022 season kicks off this month with the opening game being Valencia at home to Getate on Friday August 13 at 9pm.

Football fans will be delighted to know there are three teams from the Valencia Comunidad in La Liga again this season - Valencia, Levante and Elche. Levante are away at Cádiz on Saturday August 14 at 7.30pm and Elche are at home to Athletic on the Monday at 10pm.

Valencia’s close links with the Costa Blanca Valencia have a change of trainer with Alicante-born José Bordalás taking over for two seasons with the option of a third.

Bordalás, who never played higher than the third division, has represented UD Altea, CD Denia and FC Torrevieja among others.

Bordalás has also managed various Costa Blanca clubs including Alicante, Benidorm, Hércules, Novelda and Elche. More recently he was the Getafe coach from 2016 until joining Valencia.

Valencia also set up their summer camp on the Costa Blanca. They chose the Hotel Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort for pre-season training from July 12 to 17 where they played a friendly against Villarreal CF. Real Madrid and Valencia striker joins Levante Roberto Soldado has joined Levante. Born in Valencia, the striker joined Real Madrid aged 15 and played for Valencia from 2010 to 2013 before going to Spurs for two seasons. Other signings for Levante include winger Roger Brugué, known as Brugui, and defender Enric Franquesa.

Elche striker Nino retires Elche will be without their beloved striker Nino this season who has retired at the age of 41. They have brought in striker Lucas Boyé on loan, defender Bigas, centre-back Enzo Roco, and goalkeeper Kiko Casilla from Leeds.

Understanding the risks of investing

M

ost of us will have a financial goal, whether that be a short-term objective such as saving to pay off a loan, or a longer-term project such as making sure retirement is as comfortable as possible. But do you fully understand the risks behind investing?

In our 45+ years' experience, we have seen virtually every type of investor. We have come across people with more money under the mattress than in their bank, to others who are willing to put everything they have on the next Cryptocurrency that comes to market. These are rare cases though, and the vast majority of us will sit somewhere between the two examples above.

Risk is defined in financial terms as the chance an outcome or investment return does not match expectations but for us it goes above and beyond this. We also see risk as a personal characteristic or sentiment, one which is often determined by a client's own unique circumstances.

When discussing risk, we have found that the average investor automatically thinks about the possibility of losing money due to taking too much risk, but what about the other side of the coin? What about losing out on gains or falling behind your objective due to utilising assets too cautious for your appropriate level of risk? Take too little risk and you may not reach your goals.

Many people will know what their investment objective is and how much they need by a given time, although not many will fully understand their attitude to risk and how much of a risk they are able, or willing, to take. This is where the help of a financial adviser could pay dividends, as further discussions (in addition to a risk profile questionnaire) may help uncover considerations not yet thought of.

Choosing the right risk profile for you involves targeting sufficient risk to achieve your investment goals but at the same time ensuring this level does not exceed your risk tolerance (willingness to take risk) or your risk capacity (ability to cope with losses).

Important to remember is that every asset worldwide will have some level of risk, whether that be money invested in properties (nontenancy, housing market dips), money in bank accounts (default risk of the bank/ interest not keeping up with inflation) or simply money stored in cupboards at home (no potential for growth).

In today's market of low interest rates and increasing inflation, investors find themselves in a position of having to accept at least a small amount of risk in order to see some real return on their money. The key here is to fully understand risk and how best to manage it given your own goals and objectives.

Come Cat Sailing

S

ailing takes many forms, from sedate cruising to fun-filled dinghy sailing, but for many people, the most exhilarating form of the sport is to sail a small catamaran, particularly the popular Hobie cat.

When the wind is right and the sails are filled, these catamarans literally fly and you could easily end up hiked out on a trapeze as you race across the sea, providing a counter-balance to the sails. There is nothing more exciting, trust me.

With the Costa Blanca Yacht Club, members can now join us in sailing these catamarans. We meet every Friday at 3pm during the summer at Las Antipodas Watersports, Los Bassetes, Benissa Costa for a fun-filled afternoon with experienced skippers to show you the ropes.

Magnum Concert Productions present a fabulous tribute to Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley

ith the spectre of Covid 19 hopefully receding, Magnum Concert Productions have planned a series of concerts this autumn in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society in Teulada – Moraira (AFA).

These shows will be staged in Espai La Senieta, Moraira and will appeal to all musical tastes with the first class production that Magnum are famous for.

The first show planned for Sunday 19 September features two of the best acts here on the Costa Blanca, with J.J. Jones’s tribute to Neil Diamond and Simon Patrick’s tribute to the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. The show is scheduled to start at 6.30pm and will be conducted in accordance with any restrictions regarding safety that may be in place.

Fenugreek Chapatti (Methi Roti)

Usually eaten with butter, pickles and lashings of yogurt, methi roti goes well with curry too. We have used kasuri methi, dried leaves of the fenugreek plant, chopped fresh leaves (if available) can be used too! We love the strong aroma and distinctive flavour of fenugreek, adding seasoning and spices elevates this simple roti to another level! Fenugreek leaves are extremely nutritious, rich in fibre, protein and iron.

In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and methi leaves, mix well. (If using, add salt and chillies, mix well).

Ingredients Add the water gradually and knead into a dough; 200g chapatti/wholewheat flour adding more water when needed until it becomes Plus, extra for dusting/rolling flexible enough to roll.

1 cup full dried fenugreek leaves Divide into 4 equal parts. Roll between your palms, 1 teaspoon salt (optional) until the balls are smooth and without cracks. Apply 1 tsp dry/fresh chilli-chopped (optional) gentle pressure to flatten. To stop the dough from 200-220 ml cold water sticking, coat each ball with dry flour.

25g butter/ghee (optional) Roll the balls into thin round shapes of around 2mm thick. Use extra flour to stop it from sticking.

TOP TIP Heat the pan or tawa to a medium/hot heat.

Fenugreek leaves can be replaced by Flip the chapatti from one hand to the other to dust off the excess flour before placing it on spinach or kale. the tawa.

Cook both sides until the colour begins to change to a darker brown. Use tongs (or fingers TIME: 25 Minutes - Makes 4 Indian style!) to turn over the chapatti.

Brush both sides with butter. Cooked chapattis can be stacked and wrapped in foil or a clean tea towel.

y new Facebook page is up and running and it's a whole new world of walking wonder.

We've got everything going on in there from #MotivationMonday taking us into #WellbeingWednesday and then on to #FocusFriday. With plenty of content in between offering podcasts, walking routes, crazy challenges and so much more I feel like I've taken on a full time job on top of my full time job! But, my dream is to share my love of walking and continue to promote it as one of the easiest, most accessible, economical and rewarding exercise outlets sitting right there at the tip of our toes!

So, I'm asking the Female Focus readers to do me the great honour of giving my Facebook page a LIKE so that the work I'm putting into it might find it's way out into the world. The @WalkYourWayWell Facebook page is now alive and kicking and awaits your friendly thumbs up.

Enough of all this shameless self promotion and let’s get down to the business at hand. I’m excited to tell you a little bit about what I’ve learned this month while researching some walking challenges to get my teeth into. Now that travel restrictions are easing slightly and we all have more enthusiasm for planning ahead, I’m on a mission. I suppose I might be trying to make up for lost time? Now, I’m certainly not suggesting you go as bonkers as I do by signing up for every walking challenge you find online but I definitely think it’s a good plan to choose a challenge and give yourself something to plan for, train for and get super excited about.

You may be someone who already enjoys a challenge and gains a lot from them. Or you may be someone who shies away from challenges for fear of failure. Or you may just wonder why on earth people sign up for these ludicrously difficult races and events in the first place! Well, let’s look at that. What are the benefits of setting yourself a challenge? · You will accomplish things that you never thought possible · You will reveal hidden qualities in yourself · You will learn, grow and develop new skills · You will build resilience · You will learn to overcome obstacles · You will inspire others

· You will develop relationships with others · You will enjoy success and accomplishment · You will learn from failure · You will discover your A game · You will want to do it all over again!

So, with a list as lovely as that it seems like a splendid idea to read on and see if there’s something below that might tickle your fancy.

Join a Step Challenge: You can set up a WhatsApp group with friends or colleagues with the aim of achieving a daily step target; say 10,000 steps. Each evening share your screenshots for accountability. These small support pods can be a great place to encourage each other and further nurture friendships. Word of advice: select some like minded friends who have similar fitness and drive. It can affect the momentum and equilibrium of a group if you have a lazy participant. And treat yourself to a nice activity tracker watch. You’ll need it.

Join a Charity Walking Challenge: There are so many to choose from and these walks can take you all over the world. You can do it alone, in a team or you can even do these walks “virtually” where you contribute the same distance as everyone else but on your very own doorstep. And the best bit, you will raise money for a worthy cause and therein lies all the motivation you’ll ever need to get the job done. One of my favourites is Walk The Walk for breast cancer.

These guys have both fun annual events and online marathons. I’ll be doing a 42k (26 mile trek) this summer and raising some dosh for boobs while I’m at it. Oh, and I’ll get a medal. What’s not to love? Check out www.walkthewalk.org Join a Walking Group: So, you drive by local scenic hills and mountains every day. You gaze up at them and admire their beauty.

Well, why not look at the view from a different perspective and conquer those peaks! In every locality you’ll find a choice of walking groups suited to all ages and fitness levels and you can challenge yourself to a “Peak a Week” or a “Mountain a Month”.

A walking group makes life easy as the routes are guided and you get to hang out with some fun loving folks. Get googling!

Join a BIG Challenge: Maybe you are a regular walker but you feel your fitness level has plateaued? There is always something that you can take on to scare yourself a bit. And what is it they say about fear? “Fear is there to be beaten!” Whether it be a long pilgrimage such as the Camino Santiago or a shorter weekend adventure you’ll find something you can squeeze in to your life and lifestyle. Check out this amazing website where I recently signed up for the Jurassic Challenge which is a continuous 100km walk along the iconic Dorset coastline. I hope I have given you some food for thought and encouraged some of you to take up a challenge in 2021. After what we have been through in the last 18 months I think we can overcome a lot more than we give ourselves credit for. And I know you’ll enjoy the feeling of accomplishment if you dedicate yourself to something that is so tremendously good for you. I do, every single time. Even when I get blisters. Did she just say blisters? Oh just ignore that bit.

Best places for stargazing in Valencia

any people love the Valencia region for its beaches, fiestas, cuisine, and nightlife but there is another fine reason for coming to this beautiful region of Spain - stargazing.

Today, many people can’t look up to the sky and see dozens of stars because of light pollution. But our fascination with stars hasn’t diminished and that’s led to a rise in astrotourism.

The Starlight Foundation, set up to defend the sky as a world heritage and promote astrotourism, has designated Starlight Reserves where you can see a clear sky in all its splendour.

The Valencia region's Starlight Reserve is in the villages of Aras de los Olmos, Titaguas, Alpuente and La Yesa in the region of Los Serranos, about 100kms north-west of Valencia city.

Stargazers can enjoy a unique experience at the University of Valencia's Astronomical Observatory in Aras de los Olmos observing one of the clearest skies in Spain. You can learn about the solar system and discover the brightness of thousands of stars visible to the naked eye.

At Aras de Los Olmos and Alpuente, you can combine stargazing in Spain with rural tourism (https://www.comunitatvalenciana.com/en/publications/astro-tourism-in-theregion-of-valencia) including hiking or mountain bike routes. THE GEORGE ORWELL ROUTE IS A RECREATED PATH THROUGH THE CIVIL WAR. Famed English author George Orwell headed to Spain during the Spanish Civil War in order to join the fight for democracy, mainly out of idealism. Today, his path through Aragon is remembered by a trail of recreated fortifications.

Orwell joined the fighting in the Spanish Civil War in 1936, despite the reasoned advice of fellow author, Henry Miller. Despite being a volunteer, Orwell wanted to head to the front line, but it was not to be. Instead, he was sent with his regiment to Aragon, where fighting was light. He didn’t see much action there, but he did encounter a great deal of hardship among soldiers, including hunger and terrible living conditions. While his initial visit was uneventful, he would return to Aragon later only to be shot in the neck. He survived and his ordeal would be described in his book ‘Homage to Catalonia’.

Despite a general agreement among many in Spain to let the civil war be buried in the past, many of the trenches and fortifications where Orwell spent time have been methodically recreated. The battlefield along what is now called the George Orwell Route looks as if had never even been touched by time, much less war. Visitors can now walk the same hilltop path that was not only visited by Orwell, but by countless soldiers who took part in this tragic war.

ARCHIBALD DICKSON IS A NAME KNOWN BETTER IN ALICANTE THAN IN HIS CARDIFF HOME. He became a sailor and later a captain on international voyages. During the Spanish Civil War, Dickson captained various ships in 1938 that brought supplies to Republican Spain. As a blockade runner in 1939, he took over the SS Stanbrook owned by the shipping company France Navigation. On March 17th he received orders to set sail for Alicante to pick up a shipment of tobacco, saffron and oranges for Algeria.

However, he found close to a thousand Republican refugees who, in the face of the imminent fall of the Republic, requested to go with him to Algeria. Most of them were waiting for other ships that never came. Dickson had orders not to board anyone except for reasons of ‘force majeure’, but for humanitarian reasons he decided to allow them to board leaving the cargo behind. With about 2,500 people on board, the Stanbrook left Alicante on March 28 towards Oran as this route was believed to be clear of Francoist ships.

Due to overcrowding, the Stanbrook was on several occasions at risk of capsizing, especially when other ships passed. The next day he managed to reach Oran. However, the authorities there did not give them authorization to anchor, so they stayed another night on board with little food for so many people in precarious sanitary conditions. After several comings and goings, Dickson finally managed to obtain permission for landing women and children. ....continued on next page

After this episode Dickson returned to the UK. A few months later, World War II began and the Stanbook was used again as a supply ship. Just eight months after the feat at Alicante, Dickson was commissioned to bring supplies to France but on the way, near Dunkerque, a German submarine torpedoed the Stanbrook, killing all of its crew, including captain Dickson.

Years later, in 2009 a tribute was organized in Alicante. In this city, a street was named after his ship Stanbrook. The ship was the last to set sail from Republican soil carrying refugees before the final fall of the Republic. Archibald Dickson’s action has been compared to the German businessman Schindler, who saved the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust.

In Alicante, he is remembered as a hero. In 2014 a memorial bust of the captain was installed on the quayside to honour him George Orwell Route, Zaragoza, Aragon.

Time to check your irrigation system

S

o, summer is officially here and it’s that time of year again to check your irrigation system is running correctly and at the right times. Here is my irrigation check list.

First you need to see if you have a fully automated system with a bank of valves, or if you have a tap fed system.

1. With either of these systems check or change the battery, normally this is a 9 volt battery (the small square one). Both of these systems require a battery, the tap fed system requires it for full function and the fully automated system requires it as a back-up in case the mains power fails, as this will save all of your watering times.

2. Check the year, month, day and time. If these aren't correct then your irrigation will not function when you want it to.

3. If you know what your normal settings are for successful irrigation then you will be able to make sure that the correct running times, and or run programme, is selected.

Now it is time to get into the garden. Run your system on a manual run, this allows you to turn it On and Off without disturbing any of the programme times. Purge the system to make sure that all the air has escaped, especially if you haven’t had it running all winter, then slowly and quietly walk around your garden with the system running, unless you have bad hearing (in which case you may need some help) normally the sound of gushing water from a split or broken irrigation tube is fairly obvious. If you have a problem, then a quick cut and replacement of the piece is easy. Then just check for any pools of water if the pipe has split underground.

5. Depending on how old your system is you may wish to check the nozzles that release the water, as these can become calcified, in which case you will want to change them as this can lead to a dramatic reduction in the quantity of water released from them.

6. LAWNS If you have a lawn then you will have (normally) pop up sprinklers, there are a couple of types, a small fixed variety and a turbine which is the larger ones which move. Turn on your system manually and allow the sprinklers within the zone to pop up, check the direction which they are facing (you will be amazed how much they can self-adjust and change through the year). If you need to change the direction of the small ones you can normally give them a little twist (of the part which is popped up) to re direct them.

If this isn’t enough then you will have to unscrew the large collar (turn the system off first), this will release the pop-up part. Just by lifting and dropping it back in on the correct adjustment will see it where it needs to be, then screw the collar back on.

If you have a large sprinkler or turbine, you may need a special key to adjust these and or, you have to pop the top cap off and adjust the special clip inside which dictates from where and to where the sprinkler nozzles spray, you will be able to find online guides as well to help.

Altea Golf Club Kicks of Summer Season of Events with a Fabulous White Party

Altea Golf Club is so much more than a golf venue. Having refurbished its club house 2 years ago, it now feels more like a country club with a restaurant, terrace bar, petanca, gym, snooker hall and more.

Socialising is such an important part of the golf scene and no-one does it better than Altea Golf.

The White Party took place on July 9th in the Golf Club’s Jacaranda Restaurant to announce that summer has arrived and we can all enjoy the wonderful paradise of the Costa Blanca. Everybody was wearing white without exception – well, maybe 1 or 2! A three course meal was served during the evening while the guests were enjoying live music from Frank Abrams and AFTER MIDNIGHT. This is the third themed event organized by Faelli Events at the Golf Club. Golf Club members and their friends and family enjoy 2 amazing events per month.

Jávea U3A’s virtual visit to Valencia Jávea U3A member Peter Atkinson entertained fellow members with a presentation entitled ‘Valencia Then and Now: The Biography of a City’ at the latest monthly general meeting.

Meetings have been held online, via Zoom, during the pandemic – and this one was watched by 50 members.

Former History Group leader Peter’s entertaining and informative talk, illustrated with some excellent pictures, traced the history of this great city, Spain’s third largest after Madrid and Barcelona.

Valencia, surrounded by a Moorish wall in the 11th century, suffered numerous attacks by advancing and retreating armies during its history – as well as serious flooding in the late 1950s which led to the River Turia being diverted to avoid further destruction and a dry valley created in its place.

Peter’s presentation featured Valencia’s contrasting architecture, from its beautiful old buildings to the ultra-modern City of Arts and Sciences, constructed during the last 20 years.The city has also produced some famous sculptors, writers and artists.

Famous throughout Europe for its annual Fallas fiesta, it has also had some not-so-successful ventures such as Formula 1 Grand Prix (2008-2012) and the America’s Cup (2007-2010), which proved to be huge financial flops.

Jávea U3A is hoping that the next general meeting – in September – will be back at the Parador Hotel and open to members, with Covid measures being observed.

The Orba Warblers

Founded in 1995 by Bert and Brenda Cook the Orba Warblers Golf Society is one of the oldest golf societies on the Costa Blanca.

With an eclectic mix of lady and gentlemen players from Javea, Denia, Orba and the surrounding areas. Players are of every ability playing from 6 handicap to 36 handicap and new players are always welcome. The focus is on fun and there is a busy social calendar, with the Warblers often staying at hotels with their partners on the golf courses, before or after the golf days. They play some of the top courses in the Costa Blanca including El Saler, La Sella, La Galiana, Alicante, Bonalba, Oliva Nova and many more. With a variety of courses to choose from there is always a new challenge to look forward to. This year’s Captain David Knight has brought a new impetus to the Warblers and his award speeches for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and the nearest the pin prizes are always very entertaining.

U3A MARINA BAIXA – Hand of Friendship

During the past 16 months we have all been affected by the restrictions imposed due to Covid-19. Many of us have been unable to spend time with our families in the UK, and our friends here in Spain have become even more important than ever.

U3A Marina Baixa can provide opportunities for making new friends, taking up new hobbies or joining trips to learn more about our adopted country. The Association currently has about 200 members with General meetings held on the 4th Monday of every month, with the exception of August and December, at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi. No transport? No problem. The No 10 bus stops right outside. Membership is just 10 euros a year and anyone may join providing they are no longer in full time employment.

At our meeting on Monday 28 June we had 11 new members join and after the meeting 28 enjoyed a meal at the Yang Hu Asian Restaurant in La Nucía. We take an active role in supporting local charities and each year we are involved with Alfaz and La Nucía International Day with our “Olde Tea Shoppe”.

To give you some idea of what you can expect from your membership here are some of the recent and forthcoming events which may be of interest to you.

Keeping pets safe

in the hot summer sun

magine wearing a fur coat in summer on the Costa Blanca. Now you know how your pets must feel. Here are a few ways you can help them keep cool during these hot months.

Plenty of shade and sunscreen Make sure your dog can get to a shady area inside and out. Under the bed is a popular spot for many pets. Check they have plenty of cool, clean, fresh water.

Use pet-safe sunscreen on sensitive places such as the tips of your dog’s ears and nose to prevent sunburn. Pets with white or light-coloured fur are more susceptible. You can ask your vet if you aren’t sure of the right pet-safe sunscreen to use.

Give your dog a brush regularly, possibly every day, to get rid of excess hair, which keeps them cooler.

Your dog will enjoy a paddling pool, playing with a water sprinkler or even a watering can to keep cool. You can also buy dog cooling mats for your dog to lay on.

Going walkies in summer Your dog still needs exercise in the summer, so go for a walk in the early morning or late evening. This reduces the risk of heatstroke and getting burnt paws.

Check the pavement before heading out with your dog. Put your hand on the ground - if it’s too hot to keep your hand there for a few seconds, it’s too hot for paws.

Dogs in cars Don’t leave your dog alone in the car on a warm day. Opening the windows won’t help your dogs either. If the temperature is 32º outside, the temperature inside your car can reach 43º within 10 minutes and 51º after 30 minutes, even with windows left open a little.

A dog can suffer from heatstroke within minutes. So please don’t take the risk.
