Health & Safety Measures Planning for the safe return of our pupils 12 June 2020

Planning for Safe Return of Pupils The safety, health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff remain our priority.

We are being guided by the UK Government and other organisations in our decisionmaking around suggested dates for opening to different year groups and how we manage the safe education of each child.

While the situation remains complicated, we will continue to provide remote learning for those that need this, or would prefer to learn in that way.

This document sets out our current thinking and will be updated regularly as advice is given and our policies are developed. We welcome any feedback and will work with parents to allay any concerns.

Felsted Health & Safety Measures l Deep cleaning throughout the site before pupils return

l Regular monitoring and hygiene checks l Daily temperature checks of staff and pupils l Social distancing encouraged wherever possible

l Frequent disinfecting of washrooms l Additional hand-washing facilities for frequent hand-washing

l Hand sanitisers available at all key places across campus

l Pupils and staff will be permitted to wear face masks if they choose to do so

l Government advice regarding PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), such as masks and gloves, will be followed as appropriate

l No outside visitors until further notice 4

Training and Information All staff will have had Health & Safety Training regarding our Felsted Back to School measures.

Age appropriate social distancing and hand washing posters will be displayed around the school to remind pupils and staff of health and safety measures.

Floor markings will be in place to help pupils and staff to adopt safe social distancing in and around school.

Prep School Day For Reception, Year 1 and Year 6, from 1 June We will continue with our Felsted at Home Remote Learning Programme at school, which will include academic and co-curricular activities.

Pupils will be taught in small isolated groups (approx. 10) with one teacher per group.

Each group will experience breaks together and will not mix with other groups.

Lunch & Refreshments will be prepared on site, in carefully managed catering facilities.

The school day will run with staggered arrival and departures to maximise distancing.

Senior School Day For Year 10 and Year 12, from 15 June for 3 weeks We will continue with our Felsted at Home Remote Learning Programme at school, which will include academic and co-curricular activities. The school day will run from 8.30am to 3.30pm with staggered arrival and departure times for each group. Lunch and refreshments will be prepared on site, in carefully managed catering facilities.

Year 12 – Mondays & Tuesdays Pupils will be divided into four small groups, with members of staff supervising each group on a rota basis. One of these groups will be based in the Art Department for Art students so they can continue with their practical work. A tutor style discussion will be held each morning and supervising teachers will be teachers who teach subjects studied

by the pupils in their group, so additional support can be provided.

We will also be providing advice on University preparation, the Extended Project Qualification and transition to Upper Sixth Houses.

Year 10 – Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays Pupils will be divided into four small groups, with members of staff supervising each group on a rota basis. A tutor style discussion will be held each morning, with opportunities for social interaction and exercise within each group every day. Each group will have a daily session on the core subjects of either Maths, English or Science to support their remote learning.

Other Year Groups At present, the guidance does not allow us to have other year groups in school. If this changes, we will let you know and may adapt our plans accordingly, depending on the timing of any such announcement.

Safe Boarding Following the success of our ‘lockdown’ boarding house over Easter, we are planning to open senior boarding for a small group of volunteers for the final week of term (28 June to 3 July). As things currently stand, these need to be pupils from Year 10 and Year 12.

While the learning would continue to be ‘remote learning’, it would be done on site and within the boarding community, with opportunities for social interaction, some activity, games and exercise.

We are adhering to the BSA (Boarding School Association) Covid-Safe Charter and are a member of the Safe Schools UK initiative (safeschoolsuk.org).

Further advice will follow regarding boarding provision for the Autumn Term.

We will aim to support students who need to quarantine on site, as long as we are allowed to do so.

The school will remain open for exeats and half terms for students who do not want to travel home.

International Pupils We look forward to our overseas pupils returning as soon as possible, as advised by the UK Government and the BSA Covid-Safe Charter.

We anticipate there may be a need to bring international students back slightly earlier than usual at the start of the Autumn Term if quarantine measures are introduced. We will provide guidance and information as soon as possible, though we are aiming for flexible start dates such as 1st November 2020 and 1st January 2021 for those who can’t return in September. Remote learning will be provided if required to support face to face learning.

We will arrange for Felsted transport to pick each student up from airports to minimise contact with non-Felsted staff.

If quarantine is required, we will arrange this in a dedicated boarding house, with students cared for by fully qualified members of Felsted staff. The personal wellbeing of any pupils in quarantine will be carefully supported alongside academic structure and guidance.

Pupils will be monitored carefully and according to Government advice. We have a separate, fully equipped Medical Centre with qualified staff.

If lockdown measures increase again, pupils will be able to remain at School until they are able to get home, as we did earlier this year.

Respect for All All our pupils will be reminded of our school values, including Respect.

Empathy and understanding for other people, whatever their background or circumstances, remains core to our community.

Bullying is never tolerated.

Reminder of Covid-19 Symptoms The main symptoms of coronavirus are: 1. High temperature This means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature).

2. New, continuous cough This means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual).

3. Loss or change to your sense of smell or taste This means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

Most people with coronavirus have at least one of these symptoms.
