Top Academic Performance

The Felsted Olympiad triumphs

A unique programme of professional and school events was hosted by Felsted to celebrate the Olympic Year, including sporting and cultural events of all genres.

Concerts by worldrenowned musicians, such as Julian Lloyd Webber and Neil Hannon, to critically acclaimed drama, comedy, and educational art exhibitions by professionals and students were enjoyed by all members of the community. The Olympiad was sponsored by Woop Studios, the graphic designers behind the magic of the Harry Potter films, who exhibited a wonderful display of their well known collective noun designs.

Felsted Hosts European Round Square Conference Felsted hosted the European Round Square Conference and Britain’s inaugural Youth Round Square Conference in November. This high profile event welcomed His Majesty King Constantine II of Greece and delegates from across Europe, and included a mini Model United Nations Conference, hosted by iPads.

The conference theme of Creativity in education was truly inspiring for all involved.

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Felsted village proudly hosted a bonanza celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June, bringing a crowd of over 3,000 villagers, school pupils, their friends and families.

Felsted’s new Pre-Preparatory School officially opened this year. The building, named Stewart House, is designed specifically for four to seven year olds and is surrounded by characterful multi-sensory outdoor play zones. The building was opened by Old Felstedian, Mr Andy Stewart and local renowned author Nick Butterworth was a welcome guest, officially opening the Stewart House library. His well-known illustrations, from the Percy the Park Keeper series, have been used to name each classroom, and also appear on the main stairwell.

Felsted features in Tatler 2013

Felsted Model United Nations

Felsted made the grade again in the prestigious Tatler Schools Guide 2013 of the top 230 Preparatory and Public Schools in the United Kingdom. Tatler gives Felsted a glowing report, commenting on its international outlook and the benefit of its membership to the prestigious Round Square organisation. Felsted’s success across the years has been quoted as,

“a school with pizazz!”

Felstedian sings in Olympic Opening Ceremony U6 Esme Smith showed off her talent by singing to a worldwide audience of four billion at the Olympic Opening Ceremony, accompanying acclaimed percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and Alex Trimble, lead singer of Two Door Cinema Club.

They welcomed the Olympic Flame into the stadium singing Caliban’s Dream – a song written by Underworld’s Rick Smith, Esme’s father, to mark the final journey of the Olympic flame before it came to rest in the stadium.

Pupils from as far away as China, Morocco, Switzerland and Germany, including some Preparatory School children, attended the conference hosted by Felsted.

Pupils debated, discussed and attempted to solve many real world problems, with several Human Rights issues on the agenda. With Conflict as the theme, Mr Graham Dossett from Amnesty International was the guest speaker, providing an invaluable insight into many of the topics discussed through debate. Felstedians enjoy a busy calendar of public speaking and debating events throughout the year, including a visit to Geneva and the Hague.

Round Square Exchanges to Peru and Germany

■ Six students travelled to South Africa to represent Felsted in the International Round Square Conference.

The Secret Garden tours USA Felsted School toured the USA with their production of The Secret Garden, visiting several schools on the East Coast and a maximum security prison!

Sunset Boulevard Research Trip in LA A small group of cast members from Felsted’s production Sunset Boulevard, travelled to Los Angeles to undertake research for the show. Whilst in Hollywood, they visited Paramount Studios, the set in which much of their production is staged.

Rebeka Géczi experienced a life changing exchange to Markham College in Lima for six weeks, in which time she experienced the culture, gastronomy and variety of landscape that Peru has to offer, including Machu Picchu. She also volunteered with Prosoya in Oxapampa, a small village near the jungle.

Prosoya works with children who come from difficult family backgrounds.

Rebeka’s exchange partner, Gabriela Castro, visited Felsted in the Spring.

George Hitchcock and Ben Jewell visited two different schools in Germany this year and Albert Meister, Ben’s exchange partner, stayed in Elwyn’s during the Summer Term. Cassie McGaffin from South Africa was hosted by Sara-Jane Horne, and Jessie Fawcett from Mowbray College, Australia, spent the first part of the Summer Term in Follyfield House. More and more pupils are taking up the opportunity to exchange with our Round Square partner schools around the world.

International Dinner Felsted hosts an annual International Dinner in celebration of the diverse cultures found within the School. Students enjoy celebrating their national dress and presenting their culture to their fellow students.

Very Able Pupil Days

Languages Week Two ‘Languages Weeks’ were celebrated this ■ Pupils celebrating Greek Day year, with a range of linguistically based activities – a Spanish film, a German baking session, a French play and the inauguration of the Modern Foreign Language Twitter account!

Apple Regional Training Centre Felsted is now three years into its partnership with Apple and continues to make use of Apple mobile technology throughout the school.

Our mobile language lab and teaching of History through graphic novels are just some of the ways Apple products have enhanced learning across all ages.

Scott of The Antarctic Mr Martin Williams, the UK representative of the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust, spoke to pupils about the expeditions headed by Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton of the Antarctic. He discussed the legacy of these expeditions and the links to Felsted, following the School’s sponsorship of a Husky for Scott’s expedition many years ago.

Winning Economists U6 Economics students won the regional heats of the Bank of England ‘Target 2.0’, a competition where teams must assess the state of the economy and the inflation outlook before setting interest rates to achieve the inflationary target of 2%.

Felsted hosted several activity days for Yr 5 pupils across the region who are showing potential talent in various subjects. They included a Women in Science Day, a Design Technology Day, an Art Day and a dedicated Music and Art Day.

International and National Highlights Oxford-bound James An Oxford place was secured by James Butterworth, who gained two A*s and an A grade in Psychology, Maths and Economics respectively.

He is reading Economics and Management at St Edmund’s Hall, Oxford.

Top 10% for Value Added Value Added, introduced by the Department of Education, is a national measure of the progress students make between different stages of education, and reveals how state and independent schools have helped their students achieve this.

Felsted’s ability to serve its broad intake, including the most academically able, is truly in evidence this year.

43% of GCSEs taken achieved A* or A grades Felsted pupils improved on last year’s grades, with 70% of all entries gaining an impressive A*, A or B grade. Top set pupils achieved 89% A* and A grades, with twenty-one students gaining eight or more A* and A grades.

90% of the U6 achieved entry to the university of their choice, with 75% gaining their first choice option.

5% improvement in A Level results ■ 61% achieved A* to B grades, 5% higher than

Felsted has achieved a 100% pass rate for both Yr 4 and Yr 7 English Speaking Board examinations since 2009.

Year 4 gained 17% merit, 66% merit plus and 17% distinction, whilst Yr 7 achieved 1% pass, 5% good pass, 9% merit, 52% merit plus and 32% distinctions, showing consistently outstanding academic achievement.

90% achieved university of choice

Record breaking IB Diploma results Felsted achieved its best results to date in the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB), up 5% on 2011, with an average score of 34.4 points.

■ Fifteen students gained 34 points or more, equivalent to 479 UCAS tariff points.

■ The highest individual score was 42 points, a world class result.

■ Five students achieved 40 points or better, and a further nine students achieved 35 points or better.

Back to school for parents

Young Engineers Award

Yr 7 parents enjoyed solving the mystery of Mr Deadman with the help of their children. They used several scientific methods to convict one of the three suspects!

Top set Yr 6 pupils took part in the ‘Young Engineers for Britain’, part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Scheme. Pupils undertook an Olympics themed challenge to create and design gloves for rowers. The event was launched by James Cracknell, double Olympic Gold medalist, inspiring the pupils whilst allowing them to put their science, technology, engineering and mathematical skills into practice. The pupils received badges and a Young Engineer Certificate for their efforts.

Politics Dinner Bethan Jenkins MP, the youngest Member in the Assembly in Wales, gave an inspiring talk to Felsted girls at the Politics Dinner.

Legal Eagles Four 6th Form students represented Felsted in the Gepp & Sons Schools Legal Debate for Essex schools.

Calum Glover was awarded Individual Best Speaker at the event, beating many local Grammar Schools.

Cambridge Essay Prize Winners Alexander Temple McCune, U6 achieved 3rd place and a prize of £100 for his essay, which was entered into the annual Cambridge University AS Level Essay Competition, organised by the Psychology Department.

James Taylor, L6 submitted an essay on the causes of the English Civil War for the Robson Essay Prize, organised by Trinity College, Cambridge, for which he achieved a top 10 position.

Ross’ Royal Invitation Ross, a Yr 6 pupil, sang with the Diamond Children’s Choir, in St Paul’s Cathedral, as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Performing Arts

Professional Olympic Drama Several professional productions were held at the School during the Olympiad. Scamp Theatre Productions staged the oneman play, Private Peaceful

by Michael Morpurgo. The story told the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a First World War soldier and proved educational, emotive and thoughtprovoking for all those in the audience. The Boy with Tape on His Face also performed to the delight of the student body. His imaginative mime show, with a large prop bag and roles of masking tape, was hugely enjoyable to watch.

The Felsted Olympiad The Felsted Olympiad provided a unique programme of professional and school events to celebrate the olympic year.

The Olympiad began with an evening of multicultural performances, including a dramatic flag ceremony, in which 25 countries were recognised, accompanied by Samba drumming and Jazz. Dances from different cultures, such as France and Africa were celebrated and performed by dancers from Felsted’s Dance Academy, In Motion.

Zimbe! was performed to the three hundred strong audience and was introduced by the composer himself, Mr Alexander L’Estrange. A mixture of staff, Old Felstedians, pupils, parents and members of the community combined to form the choir and accompanying band.

Community Drama Felsted Community Players staged a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which not only included pupils and staff from Felsted, but also parents, governors and friends of the School.

School Olympic Drama Senior School pupils performed Teechers by John Godber, a play set in a comprehensive school, which required the seven actors to assume various constantly changing roles. Pupils from Courtauld House, Yrs 7-8, staged a production of High School Musical which involved over 45 pupils and a full band. The Amazing Maurice was staged by Yrs 5 and 6.

Julian Lloyd Webber magic Neil Hannon delights Felsted also had the privilege of a performance by Julian Lloyd Webber. He gave the most wonderful recital, accompanied by the talented Pam Chowen on the piano, on his Barjansky Stradivarius cello (dated c.1690), with pieces by Bach, Fauré and Britten. In The Half Light, written by his father William, was also performed with a finale of the epic Cello Sonata by Rachmaninov. Earlier that day, Julian had performed with Felsted pupils and members of the Norwich branch of the musical charity ‘In Harmony’, of which he is Chairman.

Julian is also patron of Felsted’s state-of-the art Music School.

Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy performed in February, having spent an hour during the afternoon with a small group of pupils, all of whom are keen song-writers. Neil performed songs from his newest album, entitled Bang Goes the Knighthood, and also included renditions of older classics, including Everybody Knows and, of course, National Express. We welcomed many first time visitors to Felsted from as far afield as Germany!

Woops of Art at Felsted

Olympic Opera

The Woop Art Exhibition, the largest to have been held at Felsted, attracted art enthusiasts from all over the county. Woop, the designers responsible for the Harry Potter films, paraded their animal based, alphabetical prints. The art featured some of the lesser-known collective nouns for animals, such as an aurora of polar bears or an embarrassment of pandas. The prints celebrated the use of collective nouns in a fun, but also educational, way.

The Woop Design Team inspired a competition for Felsted Preparatory School pupils to produce a collective noun for a group of Felstedians. The finalist artwork was displayed on the night and included the following winners; A Blast of Felstedians, A Splash of Felstedians and A Family of Felstedians.

The Olympiad culminated in an ambitious operatic production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, performed by both Senior and Preparatory pupils and members of staff. The audience enjoyed a summer picnic whilst being entertained.

Bury Project Creativity

Mosaic to mark the Jubilee

In Yr 9, all students begin their time at the Senior School by taking part in the Junior Leaders Diploma, a holistic programme designed to give a taste of the wide range of activities on offer. The Bury Project is a part of this Diploma. Students are asked to make a creative piece of artwork, which is then displayed at The Bury to be judged. This year’s theme was centred around the Olympics, and the winning pieces were used to help to launch the Olympiad at the opening event, Zimbe.

Felsted pupils assisted in the creation of a mosaic to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. All pupils and staff had the opportunity to arrange and glue the pieces in place, following the design drawn up by Mrs Alison Pierse and her assistant Laurie Plant. The finished mosaic is now proudly mounted outside Stewart House.

Drumming Success for Felsted Brothers Peter Rayner, L6, has drummed his way into the final of Young Drummer of the Year 2012, a competition his older brother, Richard, won in 2009. Both brothers also reached the category finals of BBC Young Musician of the Year for 2012, with Richard being awarded 2nd place and being interviewed at Felsted by the BBC in February. Richard is now studying percussion at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and continues to perform in his band, FranKo and has supported McFly on tour.

Performing Arts Westminster School Music Tour Felsted welcomed Westminster School from Adelaide, Western Australia, a fellow Round Square School, on the final leg of their Music Tour.

First ever School Production of Sunset Boulevard

LAMDA Success!

This year’s Drama production of Sunset Boulevard was performed to a sell-out audience over four nights and enthralled the audience. It was the first time a school or amateur company have ever staged the production, showing off Felsted’s Drama Department to the highest standard. It proved the most technical production Dr Charles Lee has ever directed, in terms of music and the set design.

Felsted celebrates a 100% success rate once again.

Olympic OF Dinner Over 160 Old Felstedians, including seven Felsted Olympians, an Honorary Olympian, and former Master and Olympic bronze medallist John Cockett, attended the Old Felstedian Society Olympiad Dinner. Sarah Brook (Felsted 2006-2008) graduated in Psychology from Exeter in June and is currently training to be a journalist. During her gap year, Sarah visited Malawi to volunteer at a local orphanage, where she saw people living in some of the world’s worst conditions.

Two years later Sarah returned, accompanied by her mother Janet, to see what she could do. Sarah has since decided to set up a project to provide and care for a group of 356 street orphans. Having recruited a board of trustees to oversee the project, Sarah has named the project ‘Sparkle Malawi’, and the orphanage, completed in June 2012 has two classrooms, a bathroom, office and an outdoor kitchen, and provides all the necessary care and facilities for these children to live and enjoy life.

Matthew Coward-Holley shoots at World Championships!

Matthew has had a hugely successful year, winning many competitions. He attended the National and European Championships, followed by the World Championships as a member of the England Junior team, coming joint third. He is now ranked 11th out of 85 juniors in the world.

Rugby experts provide pre-season training expertise Paul Turner (ex-Gwent Dragons’ coach and ex-Wales player) gave a daily training session during the U16s pre-season training. Nick Easter (Harlequins captain and ex-England captain) gave a contact, tackling and rucking session during pre-season training.

English Giant Slalom Champion 2012 Kieran Norris, 17, is the English Champion in Giant Slalom for his age group and has accumulated enough FIS (Federation Internationale de Ski) points to be selected to represent the Ski Team England U-19 team. He has spent the summer training in La Parva, Chile, and competed in a number of South American Cup races. Whilst competing in four races at the U-18 level, he has won two and finished 2nd in the others. Sporting Highlights

Felstedians Bowled over by home of Cricket Joshua Wells, Jake Foley, and Rehan Hassan at Lords, collecting awards for outstanding performances against the Marylebone Cricket Club, the previous season.

Four Felsted Boys qualify for Independent Schools National Rugby Squad Rory Hartley, James Hardy, Phil Walsh and Rob Dennis were selected for the National Squad in their domestic matches.

James Hardy, Rob Dennis and Rory Hartley, who captained the match, scored a try, and was named Man of the Match, saw their first game against Scottish Exiles. The second match was against the Welsh Exiles in which only Phil Walsh played, scoring two tries, and was named Man of the Match.

Their third match, against the Irish Exiles saw both Phil and James play, resulting in Phil being approached by the Irish Exiles management, and invited to join the team. All three players were selected to tour with ISB to Rome. Felsted was the only school to have four boys selected.

Tennis Success

Felsted partner with Essex Cricket FelsTed appeared at Essex Cricket Ground a number of times this summer, as part of Felsted’s unique school partnership with Essex Cricket.

Felsted tennis is on the up with much success across all age groups. Teams are playing in regular regional league competitions, in addition to school matches. Playing all year round is really making the difference, with pupils using the ■ U15A Team won Division A League and newly re-surfaced progressed to the Essex Finals. courts at the Preparatory School under floodlight during the winter months.

Three of the Preparatory School’s Tennis teams were promoted following an impressive season. The U11 Felsted Mixed Green Team won their Halstead League. The U13 Girls’ Tennis Team were promoted as Champions to Halstead League A Division, whilst the U13 Boys’ were promoted as Champions to Division 1, following an unbeaten season for both teams.

BBC Sports Journalist challenges Felsted’s top hockey strikers

■ Felsted Preparatory boys’ victorious rugby tour to Dublin.

Ben Fryer, BBC Sports Journalist for BBC Essex Radio took on the 1st XI Girls’ hockey team and two Year 11 hockey boys as a Goal Keeper, as part of BBC Essex Radio’s ‘Try an Olympic Sport’ Campaign.

Golfing talent Rebecca Earl is competing in and winning several tournaments across the county, with an impressive handicap of 19!

■ Yr 8 experience some Paralympian events, including blind running with a partner, seated volleyball, wheelchair shot put, tennis and goal ball.

■ Dan Bentley, Great Britain Paralympics Athlete teaches the Yr 8s how to play Boccia.

Saffron Walden Reporter and Dunmow Broadcast Sports Awards Felstedians were finalists in seven categories and won three.

Work Education update

OFs return to inspire Felstedians

Felsted pupils experienced a beneficial year of work education events, exposing students to as many careers as possible. The Felsted Network has been crucial to this, with many parents and Old Felstedians offering their time and support. Rory Kilmartin, Operations Director of Cornhill Private Wealth, delivered a fine presentation to the L6 on Finance. He used his experiences to illustrate a point about modern working life, and whilst winning the money game is important for many, health and relationships should be valued more.

Kevin Chen returned to talk about a career in Science and Henry Walton on veterinary and medicine applications.

Year 10 World of Work Day Yr 10s had a taste of the future, and what they would have to achieve academically in order to reach their goals.

The morning consisted of three sessions; a talk by Mr Ryan Ibbotson, Business Manager, Barclays Bank, which focused on making the most of opportunities and how The Felsted Diploma should help pupils’ CVs stand out. He stressed the importance of work experience and the need to research Sixth Form subjects. Speed Careering then enabled the students to meet thirteen professionals, most of whom were Old Felstedians, from a variety of vocations; Royal Navy lieutenant to a teacher of Geography. This was followed by a career and university talk from members of staff, in which pupils undertook a survey to determine appropriate job paths.

Sir Alan Haselhurst inspires Lower Sixth Sir Alan Haselhurst, MP for Saffron Walden delivered a ‘Question Time’ structured talk, allowing the L6 to ask many probing questions. These covered a range of topics from the NHS and the Olympics, to becoming an MP and the infamous expenses scandal.

OF Oliver Balch leads IB Language Master Class Oliver Balch (Journalist and OF) offered U6 IB students an insight into the various methods used in producing non-fiction texts and adapting writing styles to suit different audiences. The students reviewed and discussed Oliver’s own writing from his blog, travelogue, articles and even his thesis. Oliver also spoke to L6 about his experiences of being a travel journalist and offered the students some useful career advice.

Felsted’s inaugural Insurance Network, held in Aldgate, London attracted over 50 OFs, parents and pupils interested in the insurance business. The event was hosted by Robert Brown, formerly of Mont’s, CEO EMEA of AON.

Senior School students are now actively involved in the Teaching Appointment Panel, Teaching and Learning Committee, Healthy Schools Committee and 450th Celebration Committee. Preparatory School pupils have an active Pupil Council made up of League and Boarding Captains.

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards Three Old Felstedians – Ali Charlton, Claire Speakman and Jack Prior, were presented with their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award certificates at St James’s Palace, London in March.

Magic Mumbai

Felsted CCF has participated in a number of activities this year, including a visit to RAF Wyton, where 12 RAF cadets flew and took the controls of a Grob 115E ‘Tutor’ fixed wing aircraft.

The CCF Army section visited Fingringhoe Ranges, Colchester, where the pupils fired live ammunition and competed for the honour of becoming the ‘Champion Rifle Shot’. They also became ‘Trained Cadets’.

Cadets were put through their paces as the Combat Cadet Squad over a 24 hour period. A nine-person team then competed in the EX Combat Cadet Competition, involving 44,000 cadets, testing all the military skills.

Cadets also attended a RAF 24 hour exercise to RAF Honington, where they undertook first aid training, visited the armoury and completed the assault course.

130 cadets were also on parade for the annual Felsted Remembrance Sunday Service.

Eight senior pupils travelled to Mumbai in October half term to volunteer with Magic Bus, a charity founded by OF Matthew Spacie MBE, which aims to take a million children from childhood to livelihood. Working with marginalised children from Indian slums, the volunteers helped empower the children through sports and activities. It was a highly emotive experience for the students who went, and has left a lasting impression.

Jack Petchey Award Winners

MontSense win Essex Enterprise Awards

Rebeka Geczi U6, Lydia Carrington L6, Cecilie von Heintze and Samuel McArdle U6 each won an award for their contributions towards school and community projects.

Mont’s House Young Enterprise business teams, ‘MontSense’, had their Business Plan judged to be the best in Essex. The team hand-made scented candles which were presented in recycled, quirky containers.

Sam McArdle, James Taylor, Jamie Baker and George Smith were winners of the Central Essex round and, presented at the Essex Final. They were awarded Best Business Plan and the award for Social Responsibility. All of Felsted’s L6 participate in Business Enterprise within their Houses and make donations to their chosen charities.

League Charity Day The League Captains and League Charity Captains for the Preparatory School showed wonderful efforts on the League stalls as part of Charity Day. The children paid £1 to attend the non-uniform day, held stalls and carried out activities which raised £766.49 for their League charities and £435.48 for Sport Relief.

In Harmony Yr 10 pupils raised £2,500 for In Harmony, a local music charity, through a sponsored Grade 1-a-thon.

Pupils, staff and parents took up the challenge of learning an instrument from scratch to take Grade 1 within six months!
