Commemorative Gifts

Alastair Grierson Rickford, School Historian, has produced a 450th Anniversary History, a souvenir both of our illustrious past and the exceptional achievements of Felstedians around the world. It is also a celebration of the present and the future of Felsted.

This special 450th Anniversary book, along with other commemorative items, will be available to purchase in the Felsted Bookshop and at all 450th events throughout 2014. They can also be viewed and ordered online at www.felsted.org/450commemorative.

Felsted School celebrates its 450th anniversary in 2014, one of only a handful of schools in the country which can claim this historic milestone. A variety of celebratory events are being planned for pupils, staff, parents, Old Felstedians and members of our community to commemorate this momentous occasion.

Richard Lord Riche founded the School in 1564 to provide education and almshouses for his local parish.

We plan to celebrate his legacy in style in 2014 and encourage you to join us at these wonderful occasions.

Old Felstedian Dinner Middle Temple Hall, London The Inn of Court of Richard Lord Riche Ticket price: £120* (£95 for school leavers after January 2008) To include a drinks reception and dinner with wine Reception entertainment and grace to be provided by Felsted Senior School musicians A wonderful opportunity for Felstedians to come together in the heart of London, in the Inn of Court where young Richard Riche, the School’s founder, learned the ‘nice sharp quillets of the law’. Combine this evening with attending the Service of Celebration at St Paul’s Cathedral the following morning.

A Service of Thanksgiving for the whole Felsted community to celebrate the School’s 450th anniversary year. What a momentous occasion it will be to gather all those currently involved with the School, Old Felstedians and the wider Felsted community in such a magnificent venue.

The foundation articles of the School call us to look first to the Diocese of London for ecclesiastical oversight and as such our celebration service at St Paul’s will be something of a ‘homecoming’ for the School. A collection will be made for the Felsted 450th Charities.

Following the service, there will be a ticketed reception at Saddlers’ Hall (see over).

If oversubscribed, a ballot system will be used. Current pupils need not apply for tickets.

Saddlers’ Hall Reception Saddlers’ Hall Livery Company, 40 Gutter Lane, City of London Ticket price: £36* To include drinks and canapés Entertainment provided by Felsted Senior School musicians Hosted by Chris Hunnable (OF 1973-82), Dr Neville Prior (Current Parent) and Nicholas Spring (President of the Common Room). This will be a convivial Reception following the Service of Celebration, providing the opportunity to meet with friends and former members of Common Room.

Saddlers’ Hall is a magnificent mansion house, situated just a few yards from St Paul’s Cathedral. On display will be Peter Riche’s (Master in 1678 and in 1680) porringer and candlesticks.

Felsted 450th Combined Cadet Force and Corps of Drums Reunion Dinner Lord Riche Hall, Felsted School Ticket price: £80* To include a 5-course meal and drinks Dress:

Black Tie, Mess Dress, Blue Patrols or equivalent for Ladies

6.30pm: Pre-dinner drinks and Beating Retreat 7.30pm: Dinner To celebrate this significant milestone in the history of Felsted, and in particular the Combined Cadet Force and Corps of Drums’ role in that history, Felsted is hosting a military style dinner and celebration.

You are invited to join us at what will be the premier social event of the CCF year and will be an opportunity for pupils, parents and Old Felstedians to celebrate together the continuing achievements of the CCF.

Felsted 450: A Celebration of Felsted through the Ages

Felsted Founder’s Commemorative Service

A Family Day for all the Felsted community Felsted Village and School – 12 noon – 5.00pm All welcome*

School Chapel – 11.00am You are invited to attend this joyous Founder’s Commemorative Service. Relive the hymns of Felsted School life, such as ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘I Vow To Thee My Country’.

Refreshments will be available on ‘The Front’ as part of the Family Day Celebrations, where you will be able to enjoy the end of the historic pageant procession as it parades through the school grounds at 1.00 pm.

There is no charge for this event.

Although you will not need a ticket for this event, we would be very grateful if you could let us know if you wish to attend on the booking form. Please note seating will be unreserved.

Come and celebrate with the Felsted Village Events Committee on what will be a historic day, celebrating Felsted through the ages. This large open air event will embrace the village, local schools and business community.

Felsted church bells will be ringing at 12 noon as a historical pageant, led by Richard Lord Riche, processes through the village. All schools in the Felsted community will unite and dress in costume.

A vintage cricket match will also take place on ‘The Front’, along with stalls, historical games, traditional races, entertainment, jesters, jugglers, refreshments and lots of merriment. Building a Tudor House will also be a particular highlight of the afternoon’s festivities.

Nik Kershaw – Solo Acoustic Concert Short House Record Label Grignon Hall, Felsted School – 8.00pm Ticket price: £20* An absolute highlight of the Family Day will be a Solo Acoustic Concert by songwriter, Felsted dad and supporter, Nik Kershaw.

Nik released his debut album ‘Human Racing’ in 1984, achieving multiplatinum sales and launching his career worldwide. In 1990, after four MCA albums and sales of over eight million, Nik left the spotlight to concentrate on songwriting and producing, working with Elton John, Chesney Hawkes, Cliff Richard, Bonnie Tyler, Lulu, Ronan Keating and Gary Barlow, amongst others.

Recent albums include ‘No Frills’ (Acoustic Album 2010) and EI8HT (2012).

Nik Kershaw continues to delight his audiences – book early to avoid disappointment!

Remembrance Service Parade Felsted Village and School

The Felsted Combined Cadet Force and Corps of Drums parade every year through the village, to remember those fallen in war.

Following the Parade, you are invited to attend a private view of ‘Witnessing Global History’; 100 years in images, in the Lord Riche Hall, where refreshments will be served.

‘Witnessing Global History’; 100 years in images Private View Lord Riche Hall, Felsted School 11.00am:Private View 12 noon: Talk by Aidan J Sullivan, Getty Images and Harriet Logan, Photographer Felsted is delighted to be able to exhibit a selection of images, dated 1914 to 2014, from around the world. The images benchmark monumental moments that have helped shape the modern world since the start of the First World War. The exhibition’s content ranges from reportage and social documentary, fashion and portraiture to cultural commentary and war.

Help us to Create a Living History: Photo Bank Capturing a unique moment in the School’s living history in 2014 For one week in November, as an entire Felsted family, we would like you to upload an image onto our Felsted Anniversary website, www.felsted.org/450. Share with Felsted where you are and what you are doing, with a word or two that represents you. The image might be you in your place of work, illustrating a particular passion or interest or how you are making a difference in your community.

‘Oh! What a Lovely War’

Oh! What a L vely WAR

Grignon Hall, Felsted School Ticket price: £15 (£20 premier seating)* Felsted is privileged to be able to perform Oh! What a Lovely War, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. As a School we wish to honour and pay our respects to the 253 Old Felstedians, Masters and Staff who fought and lost their lives from 1914 to 1918.

The production is a howl of rage at the cynicism of politicians and the fate of ordinary soldiers in the First World War and by implication all wars. The production counterpoints brutal facts and statistics with the jaunty tunes the soldiers sang as they marched to their slaughter in the trenches, including well known tunes like ‘Keep The Home Fires Burning’, ‘It’s A Long Way To Tipperary’, and ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’.

*Funds raised from ticket sales will go towards Felsted School Drama.

The 450 tickets for this event are expected to be in high demand and are on a strictly first come, first served basis. Tickets are restricted to two per application. Follyfield House Official Opening

Felsted 450th Charities Felsted will be supporting three 450th Charities during 2014, through its own fundraising and community service programme.

Following the devastating fire in 2012, the new Follyfield House will be officially opened in 2014, at a date to be confirmed in due course.

Follyfield has been relocated to the Senior School site, positioned behind Deacon’s House and in front of the Astro Turf Pitches.

This will allow Follyfield girls to be more central on the Senior School site and will give the Preparatory School room to grow in the future.
