RICHARD, BARON RICHE OF LEEZ has had a rather indifferent press over the centuries, to put it mildly. The opinions of many historians over the intervening centuries respecting Riche’s worthiness to be regarded as the most successful politician and statesman of his age have been clouded by one issue above all others. The successful deployment of his legal expertise, rendered to Henry VIII in dealing with Thomas More’s opposition to the annulment of the King’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon, has been condemned by apologists for the subsequently canonised More as the betrayal of a saintly cleric. The enduring legacy of Riche’s two principal Felsted foundations, the free grammar school of 1564 and the almshouses of 1565, is surely ample testament to his contrition in later life for any moral turpitude he might have displayed in the service of four successive English monarchs. In celebrating the 450th Anniversary of the School’s Foundation, it is high time to set the record straight.

Richard Riche’s origins are somewhat obscure: he is thought to have been born around 1495 or 1496, in London or possibly Hampshire.

Having entered upon his studies at the Middle Temple in 1515, he soon established himself as a thrusting young law student; by 1521, he had been nominated Autumn Reader (lecturer), a post which drew the attention of the higher echelons of power to his developing legal talents. Once he had been taken under the wing of powerful courtiers such as the Earl of Oxford and Sir Thomas Audley, his rapid preferment to posts of power and influence soon followed…

In 1532, already a seasoned parliamentarian as MP for Colchester, he was appointed Attorney-General for Wales and less than two years later was promoted to the post of Solicitor-General, in which guise he rendered to Henry the service for which his good name has ever since been unforgivingly blackened. The knighthood he now received was ample proof that he had really arrived.

Riche’s next appointment, as Chancellor of the Court of Augmentations of the King’s Revenues, saw him masterminding the legalised appropriation of the lands and chattels of the very many

monastic establishments of the realm. Again, his central role in this Henrician policy has brought opprobrium down upon his reputation. Nevertheless, Riche navigated successfully the pitfalls of courtly service, and emerged considerably enriched by the process.

Sir Richard Riche managed to avoid his King’s notoriously fickle changes of favour, to establish himself quite firmly as the premier landowner in the County of Essex. He built a fine country manor house and estate on the domains of the Priory of Leez, which he had sought as recompense for his Augmentations work.

Riche’s fine-tuned instincts for successful courtly manoeuvring allowed him to find favour with Edward VI’s principal advisers, and by 1547, he had been ennobled as Baron Riche, and taken charge of the Great Seal of England, resplendent in the robes of Lord Chancellor of England, the most senior law officer in the land.

Though Riche served Edward’s successor Mary I, and after her demise also Elizabeth I, his star was in decline. He set his sights on restoring his houses at Rochford and Leez Priory, and made plans for his philanthropic legacies in his adopted County of Essex…

His Chantry foundation of 1555 was essentially a personal insurance policy, permitted by the restoration of Roman Catholicism as the state religion after Mary’s accession to the throne. Her death and Elizabeth’s coronation brought to a close the era of chantries, and Riche sought ways to transmute his original foundation into a form acceptable in the new dispensation.

Thus were devised the deeds of establishment for the “ffree schole of

Richarde, Lorde Riche, at ffelsted in the Countie of Essex for euer”, and of the “tenement convenient and mete for an almose house, for the onely relief, dwellinge, habitation and lodgynge of five poore old persones, as well men as women”.

For nigh on four and a half centuries, Lord Riche’s school and almshouses have furnished young and old alike with the benefits of his generous endowments and his careful legal and financial provisions.

Felsted Grammar School was not in existence long before its educational reputation was fully established. Under the fifth Schoolmaster, the Rev’d Martin Holbeach (1627 to 1649), the School produced a steady stream of brilliant scholars to light up the groves of academe. John Wallis and Isaac Barrow were to become respectively Savilian Professor of Mathematics at Oxford and Regius Professor of Greek (as well as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics) at Cambridge; a double distinction few schools in the land could have matched. The stellar successes of Felsted’s alumni continued under the Rev’d Christopher Glascock (1650-1690), himself a worthy product of the School he came to lead.

By the early years of the 19th century, a new era in education had begun to dawn. Thomas Arnold’s reforms of the curriculum and ethos at Rugby School ushered in the public boarding school revolution of the Victorian age…

Under Dr Mike Walker, appointed in 2008, the School’s horizons have been further widened, with admission to membership of the worldwide organisation of Round Square Schools in 2010. The 450th celebrations mark the triumphant opening of a new chapter in the long and distinguished history of Lord Riche’s ancient charitable foundations.

…continued Felsted was not to be allowed to wither and die. Under the Rev’d W. S. Grignon, new buildings were erected and numbers considerably expanded.

With the development of the railways, too, Felsted’s accessibility to a broader clientele was assured. By the turn of the 20th century, with the Rev’d Frank Stephenson (1906-1933) at the helm, Felsted’s credentials as a leading boarding school were fully established.

However, after two world wars, which included an exile of nearly five years in Herefordshire for both Senior and Junior Schools (1940-1945), the traditional public school mintmark was a somewhat tarnished concept.

It was the ground-breaking decision taken by Headmaster Tony Eggleston (1968-1983) to admit girls into the Sixth Form in 1970 which began the process by which the modern Felsted School has been reformed.

ighlighted here are a selection of notable Old Felstedians who have contributed to their chosen fields in a significant manner. This list is intended to portray the wide variety of fields that Felstedians have excelled in over the years and is by no means exhaustive.

Public Servants and Philanthropists Oliver Everett | 1956-61 Oliver Everett, CVO, attended Felsted for five years from 1956. After university, he became involved in diplomacy, before being appointed the Private Secretary to the Princess of Wales in 1981. He then became the Royal Librarian in 1985 until 2002, and is now the Librarian Emeritus at Windsor Castle.

Marcus Setchell | 1957-61 Sir Marcus Setchell was Surgeon-Gynaecologist to Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal Household, from 1990 until his recent retirement. His profile increased dramatically when, on 2nd July 2013, he safely delivered the future King of England, Prince George, third in line to the throne.

Setchell also delivered Lady Louise Windsor, the first royal child to be delivered at an NHS hospital, Viscount Severn, and Tony and Cherie Blair’s fourth child, Leo, the first legitimate child born to a serving Prime Minister in over 150 years.

Sarah Brook | 2006-08 Matthew Spacie | 1983-85 Matthew Spacie, MBE, is the founder and CEO of ‘Magic Bus’, a charity based in Mumbai, whose aim is to transform the lives of a million street children in India by 2015. Matthew was awarded an Ashoka Fellowship in 2002 and an MBE in 2007 for his services to children in the Commonwealth. He is also a founding partner of ‘Cleartrip’, India’s 4th largest online travel portal. Many Felstedians have visited and worked with the ‘Magic Bus’ charity in Mumbai and it is one of Felsted’s chosen charities to support in its 450th year.

Sarah Brook is the founder of ‘Sparkle Malawi’, a charity whose aim is to build and maintain an orphanage for children in Zomba, Malawi.

Sarah set up the charity whilst studying at Exeter University, following a hugely emotive response to a gap year experience. Her long term plan is to build a hostel, encouraging gap year students to volunteer at the orphanage and to provide monthly visits from a doctor, delivering lifesaving vaccinations. Sarah does all this on top of working full time in PR and Media in Dubai and continuing her love of sport.

F ELSTED 450 | N OTABLE O LD F ELSTEDIANS 1564–2014 Sport Johnny Douglas | 1897-1901 Johnny Douglas’s sporting prowess was obvious from a young age. He won Olympic Gold in boxing in the 1908 Games, and gained two amateur international caps in football. His major fame, however, was acquired through his cricket. He played for Essex for most of his career and had a mixed time playing for England, particularly as Captain. He ended his Test career with a respectable average of just under 30 with the bat, with a bowling average of 33. Just two years later, he was drowned when a ship he was travelling on sank just off the coast of Denmark. The subsequent post mortem revealed he may well have died trying to save his father, with whom he had been travelling.

Nick Knight | 1978-88

Nick Knight played in 17 Test Matches and 100 One Day Internationals as a left-handed opening batsman.

Also a fine fielder, he began his career with Essex in 1991 before transferring to Warwickshire, where he was captain, leading them to a County Championship victory in 2004. He retired from first-class cricket in 2006 and is now a member of the Sky Sports cricket commentary team. He finished his career with 16,172 runs, with an average of 44.18 and 40 hundreds, and a highest score of an unbeaten 303.

Derek Pringle | 1974-77

John Stephenson | 1974-83

Derek Pringle was another of Felsted’s England cricketers, playing 30 Test Matches during the late 1980s and early 1990s. An all-rounder, Pringle was perhaps unlucky not to win more caps, but was fighting with Sir Ian Botham for one place in the side. After retirement, he became a leading journalist, and is currently cricket correspondent for the Daily Telegraph.

John Stephenson has been the Head of Cricket at the MCC since 2004.

A talented all-rounder, Stephenson played over 300 first-class matches for Essex, Hampshire and England.

Felsted Olympians | 20 OFs have gained the accolade of Olympian, with a medal count of two Golds and four Bronze medals.

They are William Burne (High Diving), Robert Cattrall (Hockey Bronze), Howard Davis (Hockey Captain), Peter Decker (Skiing), Johnny Douglas (Middle Weight Boxing Gold), Dr Fiona R. Dyke (née Jacklin) (Sailing), Anthony Ekins (Hockey), Ivo Fairbairn-Crawford (800m/1500m Track Finalist), Norman Hallows (1,500m Track Bronze), Christopher Hunnable (Equestrian Three-Day Event), David Jones (4 x 100m Relay Bronze), Timothy Lawson (Hockey), Martyn Lucking (Shot Putt), David Macklin (Rowing Eights), Duncan Macmillan (400m Track), John Matthews (Hockey), William Craig Moore (1,500m/3,000m Track team event Bronze), Stuart Morris (Hockey), Richard Oliver (Hockey), Herbert Perry (Shooting Team Gold), David Scott (Pentathlon).

One OF, Neil Allen, earned the title of ‘honorary Olympian’ for his untiring coverage of 14 Olympic Games, 11 Summer Games and three Winter Games, writing for a number of newspapers, including The Times.

John Alldis | 1944-47 Arts and Media

John Alldis had a highly respected career as a conductor and musician, as Chorus Master of the London Philharmonic Choir and the Guildhall School of Music Choir. He was awarded a double Grammy award for his work with Sir Adrian Boult and Sir Georg Solti and also conducted a professional, 16 man choir called ‘The John Alldis Choir.’ A lucrative career abroad included stints with the Danish and Dutch state choirs.

Max Stafford-Clark | 1950-59 Max Stafford-Clark is a well-known London Theatre Director and former Artistic Director of the Royal Court Theatre. In 1993 he founded the ‘Out of Joint’ Touring Company with producer Sonia Friedman, which saw many productions in London, including ‘The Overwhelming’, which was also performed on Broadway in 2007. Max regularly supports Felsted’s productions and has taken a number of theatre workshops at the School. We are delighted that he has agreed to become Patron of Drama at Felsted.

Bruce Munro | 1968-77 Bruce Munro is famous throughout the art world as a leading art installation expert. His best known work, ‘Field of Light’, is an installation which has been housed in many locations, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Eden Project.

Sean Fletcher | 1987-92 Sean Fletcher is a well-known reporter and presenter for Sky Sports News. He trained as a music producer, before embarking on a career in the BBC, reporting initially for BBC Radio Wales, before moving to London with Radio Five Live. In 2011, he made the move to Sky Sports News, where he has become an increasingly frequent presence on our television screens.

Alecky Blythe (Alexandra Bulgin) | 1989-91 Alecky Blythe is a well-known playwright. Her most famous work is the musical ‘London Road,’ written in 2011. The plot was potentially controversial; it dealt with the Ipswich murders of 2006, but the show was widely acclaimed by the critics, and a film version is to be made. Alecky has won awards for her abilities as a writer, including a Time Out award, and a Fringe First award. She also wrote and co-directed a documentary on the London Riots in 2012.

John Wallis | 1629-34 John Wallis was one of the most influential mathematicians of his time.

After Felsted, he studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, before being ordained. He held a number of positions at both Cambridge and Oxford, before Cromwell appointed him Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford in 1649. Not only famous for his contribution to mathematics, he was also a Doctor of Divinity, publishing a number of theological writings and sermons.

Percy Gilchrist | 1862-67 Best known for being a renowned chemist, Percy Gilchrist’s fame was achieved in partnership with his cousin Sidney Gilchrist Thomas, for inventing the basic process of making steel from phosphorus iron. He became VicePresident of the Iron and Steel Institute and, emulating OFs Wallis and Barrow, became a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Tony Hunter | 1956-61 Dr Tony Hunter is one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of cell growth control and how cells mutate and grow.

Following a PhD at Cambridge, he has spent the majority of his career with the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, where he has been the Director of the Cancer Centre since 2008. His current vital research involves analysing how cells regulate their growth and how mutations in this process lead to cancer.

Lucilla Poston | 1970-72 Professor Lucilla Poston is Head of the Division of Reproduction and Endocrinology and Director of the Maternal and Fetal Research Unit at King’s College London. She graduated in Physiology from University College London and undertook her PhD at London University. She is an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK), a Senior Investigator of the National Institutes of Health Research (NIHR) and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (UK). Her current research funding portfolio includes grants from the BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council), British Heart Foundation, and NIHR and she has published more than 200 original research papers. Lucilla was one of the first girls to attend Felsted in 1970, and we were honoured to welcome her back to Felsted to open our newest Girls’ House, Thorne, in 2010 and as our Guest of Honour at Speech Day in 2012. A Science Laboratory at Felsted is also named in her honour.

Members of Parliament, Civil Servants, Business

Richard Cromwell | 1639-44 Richard Cromwell, the third son of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector during the Interregnum, attended Felsted along with his brothers in the 17th century. Richard succeeded his father as Lord Protector, although history does not remember him with any great fondness and it was at the end of his rule that the process of restoration of the Monarchy began.

Some people see the brief Protectorate as the reason for today’s strong democracy in this country. It gave Parliament back its authority and forever changed the Monarch’s relationship with power. So, despite the criticism of his brief reign, Richard Cromwell undoubtedly played his part in the formation of modern Britain.

Edward Abdy | 1804-08 Edward Abdy, the son of an Essex clergyman, was a Felsted schoolboy when the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was passed by the British parliament in 1807. After proceeding to Jesus College, Cambridge, and a spell studying Law at the Middle Temple, Abdy embarked upon what would become his life’s work: the campaign for the worldwide emancipation of all slaves. He travelled extensively in the USA and wrote many indignant pamphlets and hard-hitting articles on the immorality of the treatment of indentured African-Americans in the slave-owning states. A noted liberal thinker, he also supported the Anti-Corn Law League and was a vociferous Free Trader.

Robert Finch | 1953-62 Sir Robert Finch is well-known throughout the business world and also for his political career in London. After a spell as Lord Mayor in 2003, he is currently an Alderman of the City. Finch is a well-regarded lawyer, previously a Senior Partner of Linklaters, before being appointed Chairman of Liberty International.

Andrew Tyrie | 1970-75 Andrew Tyrie MP studied at Trinity College Oxford, the College of Europe in Bruges and Wolfson College, Cambridge. He is a former Woodrow Wilson Scholar and a Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford. Before becoming an MP, Andrew’s previous work included advisor to the then Chancellors of the Exchequer, Nigel Lawson and John Major, and Senior Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Andrew has twice been voted The Spectator’s ‘Backbencher of the Year’ by leading journalists, for his ‘formidable grasp of tax, the euro, and the issues surrounding reform of the House of Lords’.

His 2009 award recognised his work on cross-examining Britain’s leading banking chiefs on the Treasury Select Committee.

F ELSTED 450 | N OTABLE O LD F ELSTEDIANS 1564–2014 Military Alfred Gaselee | 1853-61 General Sir Alfred Gaselee was a notable soldier of his time. Graduating from Sandhurst, his career was long and distinguished. The majority of his time was spent in India, where he received many awards and medals. He maintained long term contact with Felsted, becoming the first President of the Old Felstedian Society from 1900 until 1918, the year of his death. He was also a governor from 1910 onwards.

Walter Hamilton | 1870-73

Plaque commemorating Hamilton in Felsted’s Chapel

Lieutenant Walter Hamilton, VC, was a renowned soldier who died at the young age of 23 during the Second Afghan War. After Felsted, he joined the British Indian Army, and served with The Guides in Afghanistan. Hamilton won the Victoria Cross, the highest possible award for bravery, for his actions on the 2nd April 1879 in a small village near Kabul called Futtehabad. The citation for his VC uses the term ‘conspicuous gallantry’ to describe the action he took. He assumed control of the unit after the death of its leader, Major Battye, and proceeded to save the life of Sowar Dowlut Ram, who had been set upon by three attackers.

Hamilton died on the 3rd of September of that same year, during which he had once again shown extreme bravery. Queen Victoria wrote to Hamilton’s mother, enclosing her son’s VC and a personal letter. Felstedians donated to provide the School Chapel with a stained glass memorial window in his memory.

Henry Hulbert | 1880-83 After a brief stint in the British Civil Service stationed in Malaya, Henry Hulbert signed up to the United States Marine Corps in 1898. He first saw action during the joint British and American intervention in Samoa in 1899 and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour, America’s highest award for bravery in battle.

He also saw action during the First World War, when he had by now risen to the highest enlisted rank, Sergeant Major. His star continued to rise during the early months of America’s involvement and at the time of his death in 1918, his promotion to Captain had just been approved. Hulbert was killed in action at the Mont Blanc ridge on the 4th of October. He had built up quite a list of awards throughout his career, including the Purple Heart. A destroyer named after him was stationed in Pearl Harbour during the attacks of 1941, and was decommissioned at the end of the war.

Richard Dannatt | 1960-64 General Richard Dannatt served as Chief of the General Staff, the professional Head of the Army, from 2006 until 2009. As a result of his service in Northern Ireland, he was awarded the Military Cross. Other appointments held during a distinguished military career were Commander of the 1st Battalion, 4th Armoured Brigade, Commander of the British Forces in Kosovo, Assistant Chief of the General Staff in the Ministry of Defence, Commander of NATO’s Allied Rapid Response Corps and Commander-in-Chief, Land Command. Baron Dannant has served as a defence advisor to David Cameron and is the incumbent Constable of the Tower of London. He was Felsted’s Guest of Honour at Speech Day in 2011.

Clergy Charles Smythies | 1854-57 The Right Rev’d Charles Smythies was famous for his missionary work across East Africa in the latter part of the 19th century, and as Bishop of Zanzibar. Graduating from Cambridge in 1866, his missionary work began in 1884 when he left for Zanzibar and a diocese of roughly 30 thousand square miles. His willingness and dedication to his role often meant he put himself in danger. The characteristic of dedication is a fundamental of a Felstedian to this day. The Smythies name is honoured by a League and a dormitory in the Preparatory School, and a classroom in the Senior School.

Ellis Edge-Partington | 1900-04 The Rev’d Ellis Edge-Partington was Canon Emeritus and Chaplain to George VI and then Elizabeth II between 1941 and 1956. He also played hockey for Cambridge between 1905 and 1908 and for England in 1909.

Architecture and Design

Reginald Pierson | 1905-08 Reginald ‘Rex’ Pierson is famous as the chief designer of the Vimy aircraft, which was the first to complete a non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in 1919. Following a science degree at the University of London, he joined VickersArmstrong and was promoted to Chief Engineer at the end of the War. He died in 1948, at the age of 56, but his legacy lives on; The R. K. Pierson Lecture is an annual event run by the Royal Aeronautical Society at the Brooklands Museum, which also has a display of aircraft designed by Pierson and his successor at Vickers-Armstrong, Sir George Edwards.

Colin Wilson | 1935-40 Professor Sir Colin Alexander St John Wilson is famed for being the architect of the largest public construction project undertaken in Britain over the past 50 years. The British Library at St Pancras was first commissioned in 1962, with Wilson as the Chief Architect. It was not until 35 years later, however, that the building was completed. This construction period has been referred to as both a ‘labour of love’ by the Queen, at the official opening in 1998, and also as a personal ’30 year war’ by the architect himself.

Sir Colin was also a professor of Architecture at Cambridge during his career. He died in 2007, at the age of 82. He is quoted by Andrew Widdowson in an Old Felstedian ‘as the 20th century Felstedian who left the greatest tangible legacy to his country.’

The first Housemaster, John Cockett, established the House as a fully-fledged Senior Boarding House during his 20 year reign.

It is still based alongside Gepp’s in the Old San. ELWYN’S HOUSE (E): Boys’ Boarding House, Years 9 to 12 Housemaster: Mr Ben Peart Pupils: 65 House Members – Known as ‘Vikings’ Elwyn’s has the distinction of being the first House to be located away from School House, when the Rev’d Elwyn formed it in 1900. In 1909, the Governors acquired the deeds to the property, thus bringing it under the stewardship of the rest of the School.

FOLLYFIELD HOUSE (G): Girls’ Boarding House, Years 9 to 12 Housemistress: Mrs Nicola O’Brien Pupils: 58 House Emblem – Owl Originally a Boys’ House when opened in 1929, Follyfield became a Girls’ House in 1995 to cater for growing demand. Sadly, the original house burnt down in July 2012, but is being rebuilt on a new site, behind Deacon’s, opening at the end of 2014.

GARNETTS HOUSE (N): Girls’ Upper Sixth House Housemistress: Mrs Beatrice Lemoine-Chicoine Pupils: 52 House Emblem – Frog Garnetts opened in 1984 as the second Girls’ Boarding House, under the stewardship of Alastair Grierson Rickford. When the School moved towards full co-education, Garnetts expanded. In 2007, it converted into the Girls’ Upper Sixth House.

GEPP’S HOUSE (A): Boys’ Boarding House, Years 9 to 12 Housemaster: Mr Peter Bennett Pupils: 62 House Motto – Amicitia Immortalis – ‘Immortal friendship’ One of the first Boarding Houses, Gepp’s opened in 1890 under the stewardship of the Rev’d Edward Gepp, himself an OF. Originally based in School House, it moved to its present home in 1955, in the Old San. MANOR HOUSE (M): Girls’ Day House Years 9 to 12 Housemistress: Mrs Carolyn Phillips Pupils: 32 House Emblem – Selene, Greek Goddess of the Moon Officially opened in 1970, Manor was originally a house for Sixth Form girls, located on the edge of the village. Closed in 1993, when full co-education was introduced, it re-opened in 2007 for Day Girls, and is located within the main School House.

MONTGOMERY’S HOUSE (D): Boys’ Day House, Years 9 to 12 Housemaster: Mr Andrew Le Chevalier Pupils: 47 House Motto – Carpe Diem – ‘Seize the Day’ Another of the original four Boys’ Houses, Montgomery’s received its name from J. E. Montgomery, who was Housemaster between 1909 and 1934. It became the Day House for Boys in 2007.

STOCKS’S HOUSE (B): Girls’ Boarding House, Years 9 to 12 Housemistress: Mrs Frances Marshall Pupils: 63 House Motto – Unitas vires est – ‘Strength through Unity’ Stocks’s was one of the original Boys’ Houses established in 1890. It also has the distinction of being the first full Girls’ House, when it re-opened in 1993.

THORNE HOUSE (T): Girls’ Boarding House, Years 9 to 12 Housemistress: Mrs Beth Roberts Jones Pupils: 26 House Motto – ‘Unity in Diversity’ Officially opened in 2010, Felsted’s newest House, Thorne, caters for the growing number of girl boarders. Based in the former Medical Centre next to Stocks’s, Thorne commemorates Mrs Elsie Thorne, Manor’s first Housemistress.

WINDSOR’S HOUSE (C): Boys’ Upper Sixth House Housemaster: Mr Francis Barrett Pupils: 64 House Motto – Nil conscire sibi – ‘To be conscious of no fault’ Named after the Rev’d F. Windsor, who was Housemaster for 28 years from 1900, Windsor’s was another of the original four Houses, opened in 1890. Based in School House, it was chosen to become the Upper Sixth Boys’ House in 2007.

by Nicola O’Brien, current Housemistress I am delighted to be able to offer a few lines about Follyfield House for this 450th Souvenir Brochure. In 2014, a new era for Follyfield will emerge as pupils move into their new home, following the devastating fire in 2012.

Whilst there are many who hold Follies close to their heart and have stories to tell, I can only speak to my experience of the House. This historic House has its own highly independent and fiercely proud tradition. Vying for excellence in all things has been the mantra of the House: we do not consider ourselves to be the ‘sporty House’ or the ‘arty House’ but rather we try to encourage the girls to make the greatest effort in as many areas as possible.

Follies is a House of laughter and compassion: a true community where we look after each other, have fun together and strive to achieve together. We endeavour not to lose perspective in our busy and

privileged lives and seek to develop the girls’ altruism at all times. Our charity projects have raised in excess of £7,000 in the last three years, with Old Follyfield girls sharing their experiences of charity work through the Follyfield Lecture. Seeking to develop a moral purpose and a more profound awareness of issues affecting the world is central to our ethos and events such as International Women’s Day are marked with discussions of women’s issues.

Our House character was tested in 2012 when our lovely former building was destroyed by fire. The girls immediately rose to the challenge of the change in circumstances: a group of Lower Sixth girls raised money from the sale of printed T-shirts and, whilst many lost personal items in the tragedy, the girls’ thoughts were very much focused on the coming together of the community as they moved into the next stage of the House’s history.

The temporary accommodation was embraced without a murmur of discontent and the girls went on in that first term to achieve great things.

The opening of the new Follyfield is a time of great anticipation and excitement. Members of the House’s Athenian Society have been consulted about colours and furnishings and the design and facilities are very much tailored to young women of the 21st century.

In Autumn Term 2014 the new Follyfield House will open and we welcome you to join us at the official opening. The new building promises to be a wonderful environment for girls’ boarding, capturing the Follies spirit through a number of initiatives.

An historic scroll will be placed in a glass box in the main entrance hall, naming all Follies boys, girls and staff who have lived in Follyfield House since its inception in summer 1929.

The Bronze Medal Winning Chelsea 2013 Follies Garden will also be transferred to create a wonderful outdoor environment for the girls.

The next stage of our beloved House’s history is about to commence and I feel honoured to be able to walk with the girls into the future.

HISTORY OF FOLLYFIELD Follyfield House was the sixth Boarding House to be opened at Felsted. The first boys to live there chose to migrate from their existing Houses in the Summer Term of 1929 and become the founding members of the House, under the Rev’d George Ingle. In fact, the Headmaster of the day, Mr Alastair Andrew, when he took on the reins of the House, renamed it Ingle’s, and it stayed that way until it reverted to Follyfield under Cecil Hamilton’s stewardship.

Like Elwyn’s, the House originally had its own boys’ dining room and extensive kitchen facilities. When the Lord Riche Hall opened in 1989, in-House catering was abolished, and more space became available for communal social and recreational use.

With the advent of full co-education, Follyfield followed Stocks’s in being converted to a Girls’ House, and in the Autumn Term of 1995 history repeated itself when half a dozen Stocks’s Yr 10 girls migrated to ‘Follies’, where they were joined by eight girls new to the School in Yr 9; together these ‘Famous First Fourteen’ were to become the new founder members of Follyfield, which

by September 1997, had its first Upper Sixth members.

F OLLYFIELD FAMILIES Two families with close ties to the House remember their experiences of Follies.

Fred Hargreaves | g72-77 Like many of my contemporaries, I have very fond memories of my years in Follyfield House. A lunch was held in 1992 to mark the closing of the dining room and the event was completely oversubscribed, which reflected the huge demand from Old Boys to attend.

My association with Follyfield revived in 2003 when my three daughters became Follyfield girls. To see the House burn down was a very sad event for us all, but I am sure that the the unique Follyfield atmosphere will continue to prosper in the years ahead.

James Furze | g67-72 I have often wondered about the experiences each generation enjoyed during their time at Felsted; they must have been so different. My father was a Follies boy pre-war, then myself and followed by my three daughters.

The House underwent huge changes during this time, from bare wooden floors to a more homely environment. However, we all shared and enjoyed the independence and camaraderie of the House. May the spirit of Follyfield live on in the new House. Who knows, perhaps a fourth generation of the Furze family will experience the privilege of time in Follyfield!

The foundation articles of the School call us to look first to the Diocese of London for ecclesiastical oversight and as such our celebration service at St Paul’s will be something of a ‘homecoming’ for the School. A collection will be made for the Felsted 450th Charities.

Felsted School is delighted to have permission to exhibit some very important and famous photographic images from across the globe, recording monumental moments that have helped shape the modern world.

The exhibition’s content ranges in style from reportage and social documentary, fashion and portraiture to cultural commentary and war. Each of the images shown are an engagement with the world – a face from a troubled time looking you in the eye, a moment of joy caught forever, a black and white past made glorious colour.

Many of these photographs were never intended to stand alone; the Picture Post photographers would have been shooting as part of an essay. Out of context they can tell a different story, standing alone as an arresting image of great power.

Alongside the photographs, written responses to them by Felsted School pupils will be on display, illuminating a new generation’s reaction to our collective past.

The exhibition will feature gallery favourites and some bestselling images, alongside lesser seen work by remarkable photographers. Reflecting the sheer variety of material that spans a century, what the images have in common is that they tell us something of the world succinctly and eloquently. There are visual refrains to be found in captivating scenes loaded with history, and also more abstract images on show.

This unique exhibition should not be missed – these iconic pictures are part of a most remarkable collection on loan to us from the Babbington Collection in our special Anniversary year.

‘OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR’

Grignon Hall, Felsted School

One of only a few schools to perform this play, Felsted is privileged to produce Oh! What a Lovely War, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. As a school we wish to honour and pay our respects to the 253 OF’s, Masters and Staff who fought and tragically lost their lives from 1914 to 1918.

Oh! What a L vely WAR

The production was first staged in 1963 by the theatre pioneer, Joan Littlewood, at the Theatre Royal Stratford East. The show soon became one of the legendary productions of 20th-century British theatre, when it brought audiences to their feet, cheering and weeping. It was an immediate hit, transferring to the West End in June 1963, opening on Broadway in 1964 and receiving four Tony Award nominations including Best Musical.

The show is a howl of rage at the cynicism of politicians and the fate of ordinary soldiers not only in the First World War but also, by implication, all wars. The production counterpoints brutal facts and statistics with the jaunty songs the soldiers sang as they marched to their slaughter in the trenches, including well known tunes like ‘Keep The Home Fires Burning’, ‘It’s A Long Way To Tipperary’, and ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’.

Oh! What A Lovely War is a satirical musical about World War I, a comment against war in general and remains as relevant in today’s environment as it did in 1963.

REMEMBERING FELSTED’S FALLEN Felsted has a long military tradition, with many OFs having fought and died for their country over the years.

There are too many heroes to mention in this brochure, but perhaps our most notable soldier was Captain John Leslie Green OF, VC, Captain of the Royal Army Medical Corps. Attd. 1/5th Bn., The Sherwood Foresters (The Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment).

On 1st July 1916 at Foncquevillers, France, Captain Green, although wounded himself, rescued an officer who had been wounded and was caught up in the enemy’s wire entanglements. He dragged the injured man to a shell hole where he dressed his wounds, notwithstanding the bombs and grenades being thrown at him the whole time. Captain Green tried to bring the wounded officer to safety and had nearly succeeded when he was himself killed. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery.

Windsor’s House commemorated Captain Green in 2013 by naming their new Common Room after him. Former Housemasters attended the official opening, and a plaque dedicated to him is on show in the House.

• Inspire current Felstedians regarding the world of work through engaging OFs and parents in the School’s Work Education and Careers Programme • Enable the Felsted community to connect through social activities and events

Felsted also runs a series of Work Education activities for pupils, ranging from visits to different work places, ‘speed careering’ sessions, presentations from OFs and parents to mock interviews, CV writing, enterprise action days and personal career guidance. Students follow a Work Education and Careers Programme which aims to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of work and also seeks to inspire them to attain their potential in order to follow their career goals.

Work Experience With help from Felsted parents, I have gained vital work experience at a variety of places including working alongside a Criminal Barrister at Chelmsford Crown Court; at a City law firm Herbert Smith Freehills; within banking at Morgan Stanley and sales at BNP Paribas. I thoroughly enjoyed these valuable opportunities.

OF Dr Henry Walton (fc 94-07), Foundation Year One Doctor at Royal Sussex County Hospital, delivered an inspiring speech to budding medical students in Year 11 through to Upper Sixth.

Groups of three or four pupils had five minutes to ask each OF questions about their career path since leaving Felsted.

SOCIAL OFs and current Felsted parents converged on the Palace of Westminster for an evening reception to celebrate the School. The evening was hosted by the Right Honourable Sir Alan Haselhurst MP in the Strangers’ Dining Room, House of Commons. Guests had the opportunity to network with each other and engage with the School.

Part of Lord Riche’s legacy was the creation of the Almshouses in Felsted, which were built close to the School in 1565. This proved to be the core of all of Felsted’s charitable works over the years, and managed by the charitable foundation of Felsted School, they have provided and will continue to offer a vital lifeline to many in the community.

CHARITABLE WORKS ACROSS THE WORLD Felsted students quickly learn the value of volunteering. Service to the School and to local, national and global communities forms a central part of the Felsted ethos.

All of our students will become involved at some stage of their school career with Charity and Fundraising work. By the time students leave Felsted, many will have chosen to

take the initiative with a service project of their own.

Numerous charities are supported, with specific projects, often at the request of individual students.

Fundraising for Farleigh Hospice

F ELSTED ’ S 450 TH Y EAR C HOSEN C HARITIES During Felsted’s 450th year, the School will be supporting three 450th Charities through its own fundraising and community service programme.

THE FELSTED SCHOOL MISSION & ASCENSION CHURCH The link between Ascension Church and Felsted School was forged in 1880, when a poor area of the London Docks was brought to the attention of Headmaster, Rev’d D. S. Ingram.

Ingram moved to found the Felsted School Mission Association which proposed that every master, prefect and pupil pay a subscription to the Association. This funded a small brick and iron mission built in 1887 in Baxter Road, Custom House, the site of the present Ascension Church.

However, within just four years the congregation had outgrown its first home and the Felsted School Mission generously contributed to the cost of a new church. This was dedicated on Ascension Day, 8th May 1902, and was situated opposite the newly named Felsted Road.

For over a hundred years, links have continued to grow. Managed by its Council and funded mainly by Old Felstedians, the Felsted School Mission contributes some £40,000 per annum to the Ascension. The worldrenowned ‘Ascension Eagles’ cheerleading group began as an outreach project from the Ascension Church in the mid-1990s, due mainly to the vision and drive of the then Vicar’s wife Shara Brice OBE. The Ascension youth team and staff from Felsted Senior and Preparatory Schools facilitate a number of initiatives that enable

Magic Bus is a charity based in Mumbai which is run

by Old Felstedian, Matthew Spacie MBE. The aim of the charity is to ‘steer children in Mumbai towards a better life with better awareness, better life skills, and better opportunities, in the journey from childhood to livelihood’. Felsted students visit Mumbai each year for a ten day volunteering programme, during which they help teach the Magic Bus children core life skills through sports and activities. Regular fundraising events by pupils over the past few years have raised over £25,000. Felsted’s 450th year aim is to be able to raise £20,000 to create a ‘Felsted Leadership Centre’ for this worthwhile charity. For more information please visit www.magicbus.org.

With the support of the Felsted School Mission, Ascension Church continues to reach out to many areas of the local community through the Garden Community Café, the ‘Elders’ lunches, work in several local schools, the Ascension Football Academy and a newly established ‘Parent and Toddler Group’. The Rev’d Dave Chesney, who became Vicar of Ascension Church in May 2012, comments ‘Our partnership has a great heritage – we are very grateful for Felsted’s support and wish the School every blessing in its 450th year’.

VOLUNTEER UGANDA This incredible charity was founded by Dr Hamlet Mbabazi, and is close to the heart of Felsted’s Chaplain, Nigel Little.

Originating just 15 years ago, under a tree in south west Uganda, with 70 children, Volunteer Uganda has grown to create a pioneering network of schools that achieve some of the top grades nationally. With Great Lake’s High School seeking to introduce science A Levels to the region and with the teacher training college hoping to achieve University status, Volunteer Uganda provides young people in this area of real poverty with a first class education.

The charity is fully run by volunteers so that every penny of fundraising goes straight to the people in need. Dr Mbabazi visited Felsted in September 2013 to launch our partnership with this award winning charity and we aim to get more involved in volunteering opportunities for both staff and pupils.
