Bonding with Baby Before Birth

M

any of us have heard about the benefits of reducing or avoiding stress during pregnancy. Extreme maternal stress can negatively affect the unborn baby. A pregnant woman’s emotions don’t cross the placenta, but her hormones do. Researchers believe that a stressed mother produces an abundance of stress hormones called catecholamines, which have been shown to, in turn, affect emotions in baby.

When clients in our midwifery practice ask us what they can do to reduce stress, we recommend exercise, eating right, taking time for themselves doing something they love, as well as getting enough sleep. And we also advise them to bond with their unborn child.

We think of birth is as the beginning.

However, the baby is already aware long before birth. By 23 weeks baby’s hearing is established and fetal brain scans have shown that at 26 weeks the baby is responding to touch.

Here are some great ways to bond with your baby before birth: 1. Choose a special CD or piece of music to listen to when you lie in bed. It is believed that babies remember the music after birth and that it helps to soothe them. Having ‘your song’ will help the prenatal bonding.

2. Talk to your baby. It does not have to be deep or meaningful. Tell him/her what you are doing or chat about the weather. Baby loves hearing your voice.

3. Play with your baby. Gently rub your belly, feel the baby kick back.

4. Encourage daddy and siblings to talk, play with and sing to the baby. The baby is able to distinguish their voices and touch.

5. Play Peek-a-Book with Baby and a Flashlight.

This is a great way to have fun with your unborn baby! Grab a flashlight and shine the light onto your belly. This works best later in the pregnancy after you can feel baby’s movements, baby sees the light in much the same way as you see sunlight when you close your eyes. Lots of times, baby will follow the light wherever you shine it. It’s also a super fun way to get

How can bonding with your unborn baby reduce stress?

The answer again lies in the production of hormones. When a mother bonds with her unborn child her body produces endorphins, often also called the “happy hormone.” When these “happy hormones” are released, the baby is bathed in them as well. Mom feels more relaxed almost instantaneously as the stress melts away, while giving her baby the gift of relaxation as well.

Preparing Your Child for a New Sibling

ur family building began with one child. I discovered that preparation helped our children transition into their new roles as a “big brother” or “big sister” as our family grew. Here are a few tips from my “in the trenches” experiences, practices that helped our children embrace the newest family member with total joy.

Begin the big brother/big sister preparation during your pregnancy or adoption process.

You will have plenty of time once you have shared the news that your are expecting. Use some of this time to help your child become comfortable with welcoming the new arrival. Siblings-to-be can sing, talk to, or tell stories to the baby in your belly. Talk about what a great older brother or sister your child will be, and what a help they can be to you.

Your child can carry a photo around of the child if you are adopting. My son did this when we received a picture of his sister from China. We laminated a copy for him so that he would not destroy it. He proudly shared the picture with anyone he could, “This is my baby sister!”

diapers, books, and stuffed animals.

Older siblings can help with painting the room. Our son helped us pick out books for his sister, as well as toys and clothes.

My daughter helped me put her sister’s crib together by handing me the small assembly items. She then ran and got a stuffed animal from her cache to gift to her baby sister. PB Parenting tip: Check out page 6 for a great gift idea for big brother or sister to give to their new sibling.

Acknowledge that everything shifts when a new child arrives.

An only or youngest becomes a big sister or brother. The youngest child relinquishes the spot of being the baby, to become the older child. As parents we should recognize and talk about these changes with our children and focus on the fact that even though our family is growing it is still our family, just bigger.

Our oldest was an “only” for five years before his sister arrived home. We spent a lot of time preparing him to be a big brother. We discussed responsibilities and expectations as well as the privileges that come with being the oldest. We read books and watched movies about families

with multiple kids; then we talked about the relationships we read about or viewed in the movies. The transition to becoming a big brother went beautifully because he was so invested. Now a teenager and an adult they continue to be close.

Be consistent.

Adhere to your schedule. Children do well with consistency; they need to know what they can rely on, what to expect. Consistency gives a child security, especially when there has been a big change, as in the addition of a new sibling.

It is common for children to act out or regress when a new sibling arrives into the family. My youngest daughter wanted a bottle after her brother arrived home.

Address the expectations and fears that come with change.

There will be less energy, less patience, and less time to go around, especially during the first days, weeks, and, sometimes, months home. You will likely run into additional challenges because you are juggling more kids.

Assure your child that your relationship with and love for them will not change. Try to schedule one-on-one time to listen and share with your child. Have dad, another family member, or a trusted friend watch the new sibling. Your child will feel loved, and this is the greatest gift you can give.

Tips for Introducing a New Pet to Your Family and Your Pet to Baby

BY HEIDI GANAHL Tips for Introducing a New Pet to Family: 1. Get everyone in the family on board – It is important that all of your family members are ready for the responsibility of a dog. Prior to bringing your new dog home, determine who is responsible for walks, feeding, etc., so once your pup is in the home, you are ready to get started on the right paw.

2. Head to the store – You will want to purchase items you will need for your pet prior to them coming home. You will need food, dishes, toys, cleaner for accidents, a leash and collar and more. You want to ensure that you have as much as you need.

Yet childhood with our kids often feels like it will disappear “in the blink of an eye.” To hold back its passage, don’t stop blinking. Instead, check out these five tips from moms and experts on how to prolong and savor each phase of childhood while it lasts.

Engage your child Margaret Philbrick found reading aloud to her children to be a powerful way to slow down time. Sitting together snuggled on her bed created a cozy nighttime bubble.

“It’s good because it chills them out and their minds stop running,” she explains.

For her oldest son (now in college) the habit stayed from infancy through high school. But her middle child only agreed to read with her through eighth grade.

Then the two switched to weekly dates at a coffee shop where they take a half hour to talk together.

Philbrick advises, “Engage with your child, no matter what age they are. Do something they love with them, not just watching them.”

Celebrate “lasts” “Any time there is going to be a ‘last’ I make sure we’re going to be a part of it,” says Barbara Vetter, mother of three. “I can’t say I necessarily look out for them all the time, because some of them just happen and you don’t know it’s going to be the last time. So that makes every one that more important.”

Being intentional about acknowledging the last time a child will experience something started for Vetter after reading Karen Kingsbury’s book Let Me Hold You Longer. In it a mother talks to her young son about how it’s not so much his “firsts” that she wants to take note of (first tooth, first word, first day of school). She details instead the “lasts” she hopes to remember (last baby bottle, last day of kindergarten, last time wearing a high school jersey).

Vetter points out that the end of an era marked by a ‘last’ creates an opportunity

to talk with a child about what you remember. In fact, she believes that firsts are about the child, while lasts may be more for parents. She explains, “We naturally track the firsts. They are reaching a milestone, so you want to record it. But maybe with the ‘last’ you are reaching a milestone - the milestone that they are going on to the next stage.”

Mark off rites of passage Creating traditions around special dates, milestones, and ages can help us to pause and notice more. Doing a specific activity on that occasion gives us a point of grounding, an anchor in time that slows us for a moment. One father created a tradition of making a particularly tough mountain climb with each of his daughters on their thirteenth birthday. The trip gave them time alone together and a great setting to spur contemplation.

Live in the Moment Because we want to treasure our children’s accomplishments, we can become caught up in recording special events - we’ve all seen the “Mamarazzi” lined up holding video and digital cameras during school performances. But a camera creates a buffer between us and the action. The event passes without us experiencing it.

Make a goal of capturing a few shots or select minutes of footage. Then put the camera down and enjoy. The same goes for editing and preserving what we’ve captured. As Kroeker says, “To spend all of one’s time scrapbooking, writing,

Go Paperless Families with young children can easily go through several rolls of paper towels per week. If you’re constantly replenishing your stock, consider replacing most of your paper towels with washcloths or a cut-up towel. Ditch the Drinks If any food item should win the “expendable” award, it’s got to be drinks. How many juice boxes, sports drinks and other water alternatives do you buy each week? Save substantial money by ditching those drinks for good old H2O. If you don’t want to go cold turkey, consider mixing water with store-bought drinks to cut your consumption in half, along with the sugar and calories.

Is Your Grocery Store the BestPriced?

If you shop at the same store week after week without running a price comparison of area stores, you could be spending hundreds more on groceries per year than you need to. To find out if you’re getting the best deal, do a little research: 1. Make a list of 10 foods you buy each week. When choosing your items, think about the types of food your family mainly consumes. If you eat a lot of dairy, make sure you check a few prices in that department; if your cart is usually filled with fruits and veggies, include a few different types of produce.

2. Take your list to area stores and record how much they charge for each item.

3. Total up the bill for each supermarket.

While individual items may cost more or less, totals will give you a good idea of which store offers the lowest overall prices.

Try out one or more of these uncommon options, and the savings may surprise you.

1. Lead by example. Before they’re taught proper manners, a child will look to you — and other adults around him or her — for cues on how to behave. Would you be horrified if your child was disrespectful toward his teacher? If so, it’s important for you to avoid being disrespectful toward others. Strive to be a good role model: keep a cool head, treat others with respect, and avoid inappropriate language, especially in public.

2. Emphasize family dinners. When you sit down at the dining room table as a family, take the opportunity to teach your child table manners as well as conversational skills. As they begin to

watch and imitate your behavior more closely, you’ll have the opportunity to regularly reinforce the importance of good manners. If you want your child to pick up good habits, always use the magic words like “please” and “thank you” — especially when you speak with the wait staff at a restaurant.

3. Set firm rules and stick to them. Make it clear to your child what kind of behavior you expect of him or her. A good place to start? Require he or she show respect to you, as well as others. When your child begins to behave poorly, give a warning and briefly explain why that behavior isn’t acceptable. Make it clear what consequences your child should expect if he or she breaks a specific rule. Then stand your ground and follow through with a time-out or by taking a privilege away.

4. Encourage patience. Babies are selfish for good reason; in many ways their survival depends on their ability to immediately make their needs known. As your child transitions into toddlerhood, it’s the perfect time to teach patience.

When your child asks for something, don’t react immediately. Instead, give them a few moments and allow them to feel what it’s like to wait for something. Verbalize how proud you are when he or she shows patience.

When you set firm expectations, celebrate successes and follow through with punishments, your child will learn and adapt her behavior accordingly. 5. Parent as a team. Whether you have a traditional family structure or live in a home with two or more adults, work together as a team. Children will test you over and over as they try to find ways around rules and expectations. Busy parents who forget to communicate may fall prey to a common trick: divide and conquer. When you respond to a request with a firm “no,” your child will immediately appeal to the other parent.

If you want to put a stop to this tactic, explain that a “no” from one parent means “no” from both parents.

BY JUDY M. MILLER Grandparents are special. They offer sage advice, wisdom, and wonderful “listening ears.” Sometimes, especially when mom and dad aren’t around, they let their grandkids get away with things their parents won’t.

President Jimmy Carter recognized the importance of grandparents when he made Grandparents Day a national holiday in 1978. The holiday falls on the first Sunday after the Labor Day weekend, this year on September 7th.

Grandparents often give so much and expect so little in return, other than time and contact with their grandchildren.

How can you and your children show love and appreciation for their grandparents?

Here are some of my favorite familytested ideas that celebrate and honor the important roles that grandparents and great-grandparents play.

Photo Calendar This is my personal favorite. I love revisiting pictures and memories as I create the calendar. The photo calendar is one of the most appreciated gifts. My mother-in-law never disposes of the calendars, even after they have served their purpose.

Sites like Shutterfly and Snapfish have easy-to-use templates in which you can include pictures of the grandchildrenwith and without grandparents, artwork, pictures of drawings, poems, stories, and anything else that has been saved and can be uploaded as JPEGs. The only limitation is your imagination.

Framed Pictures With the digital age, hard copies of pictures aren’t shared and framed like they used to be. Single? A collage?

What about a handmade frame with the picture? Check out your local pottery painting studio or craft store for endless inspirational ideas.

Consider purchasing a digital frame if you want to give the grandparents multiple pictures. The digital picture frame is easy to set up and use. The frame allows grandparents to view a revolving set of pictures that have been uploaded via a memory card, USB, or a wired or wireless connection to the home’s network. The digital frames range in physical size, style and storage capacity. Additional options, like music, are also available so do your research to help you decide on your purchase.

Brag Book Grandparents love to brag on and share about their grandbabies, no matter what their ages. A brag book full of current pictures makes it easy.

I created a number of brag books for the grandparents when my four were really young, and continue to update them. Keep the brag books small, a size that can fit conveniently into grandma’s purse and can be readily shared. The smaller size is also much easier for hands that may not be as nimble as they used to be.

Grandparent Interview Help the kids create a list of open-ended questions to ask. The interview can be recorded. You can also dedicate a journal for this purpose, preferably created by the kids, something like “The Biography of ____________, My Grandpa.” If you opt for the journal, the list of questions can be in the front pages.

Sharing stories is bonding, grandchildren feel claimed by this sharing of the past.

They also learn surprising and wonderful things about their grandparents and are able to see them as more than “just” grandparents. They learn to appreciate what their grandparents have experienced.

Appreciation Poster Create a “Why we love...” poster. The kids can construct and decorate a poster small enough to fit somewhere visible on one of their grandparents’ wall. Again, leave the kids to their imaginations.

One fun thing we have done is to include a hand-in-hand area, the child’s hand outlined in pencil, ink, paint, glitter glue, or puffy paint, inside the shape of the grandparent’s hand, also outlined in a contrasting color. This can be added before or after the gift is given. Put a date next to the outlines.

The ideas to honor and celebrate grandparents are endless. Get the kids started early because if they are anything like mine they will spend a lot of time creating something special for these remarkable people in their lives. And grandparents will appreciate knowing they matter and are loved.
