5 Cheap & Easy Birthday Party Ideas BY RACHAEL MOSHMAN You can’t get around birthdays – they come each year for all of us! And most children want to celebrate with a party every year. Parents want to create a special day for their child, but often become overwhelmed at the expense and work involved in throwing their child a birthday party. Celebrating your child’s big day doesn’t need to cost a fortune or wear you out. Here are some cheap and easy ideas for a fun birthday party. • Don’t have the party at home. You will have to decorate, purchase supplies and be stuck with clean up. Host it at a public place instead. Consider the zoo, bowling alley or public pool. You will likely be surprised at the value. My daughter’s birthday party at a skating rink was only $99 for two hours of skating, arcade tokens, soda, popcorn and pizza for ten kids. They provided the decorations and paper products. We only had to bring the cake! I loved the price and that I didn’t have to worry about the children destroying my house. • For an even cheaper option, have the party at a park with a cool playground. The children will keep themselves entertained without organized games, which also eliminates the need for prizes. Grab a pavilion with a picnic table under it and tape some streamers around it. Serve

cupcakes and juice boxes. That’s all you need! • Do a double party! Do a little investigating to see if any of your child’s friends, neighbors or cousins have birthdays close together. Then combine your efforts with the other family. Have one party and share the costs. This works especially well when the majority of the guest list would be the same for either child anyway. • Use items you already have on hand instead of buying new stuff. Dig in your child’s toy box for decorations and party activities. If your daughter loves Hello Kitty or your son is obsessed with Thomas the Tank, their friends probably feel the same way. Don’t waste your money in the party supply lane. Put out the toys you already have scattered all over your house. • Have a sleepover. Though this goes against my first tip, sleepovers are generally low cost and require little preparation. Allow your child to invite a few friends over in the evening. Serve pizza for dinner and popcorn while they watch a movie. Arrange for the parents to pick up children soon after they wake up. Put out some cereal for breakfast for early risers.

My favorite birthday party was held on my grandmother’s patio when I was eight. She set up a treasure hunt around her neighborhood. We followed the clues to a “treasure box” (a cardboard box she had painted gold). Inside the chest were stuffed Pound Puppies she had picked up at garage sales and Pound Puppy Stickers. Then we ate hot dogs, homemade cake (from a mix) and ice cream. I thought it was perfect and my guests agreed. Low-key parties allow you to enjoy your child being in the spotlight without stressing about the cost or work involved. You may be surprised to find that the simple parties are the ones your child talks about into adulthood. Rachael Moshman is a mother, freelance writer, educator and family activist. She loves birthdays – and not just for the cake! Find her at www.rachaelmoshman.com.

Health & Wellness Local Mom Brings Awareness to Breast Cancer in Women Under 40 Friends/Moms/Business Owners, Stephanie Pergeorelis & Melissa Goldberg-Taylor met at chemo and are fighting cancer together.

Thirty years ago, a diagnosis of breast

cancer was thought of as a virtual death sentence for many women, but since that time, significant progress has been made in the fight against breast cancer. Reduced mortality, less invasive treatments, an increased number of survivors and other advancements have their roots in breast cancer research – more than $790 million of it funded by Susan G. Komen, the world’s largest breast cancer organization. However, the reality is that breast cancer is still a serious disease. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held each October, brings awareness to the disease and empowers women to take charge of their own breast health. This year, about 200,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the U.S.. Despite the increased awareness of breast cancer, major myths still abound. Women must remain vigilant against this disease by learning the facts and understanding how they may be able to reduce their risk. Melissa Goldberg-Taylor of West Palm Beach, found that vigilance was the key in her diagnosis. After having a mammogram

screening to check out a suspicious lump in one of her breasts, they told her to follow up in a year. However, she did not trust what she heard. Luckily, she listened to her intuition and made an appointment with a breast surgeon. He performed an ultrasound that showed not only a lump in her breast, but a rather large lymph node in her armpit. A biopsy confirmed that it was positive for cancer. Her doctor, John A.P. Rimmer, MD, told her she had just saved her own life. On March 1, at 35 years old, Melissa was diagnosed with infiltrating ductal carcinoma that started in the milk duct and metastasized to her axillary lymph nodes. Melissa said that it happened so fast, “In January, I was making plans and setting goals and all of that had to be put on pause.” A busy mom of a 5 and 7 year old and owner of Small Fish Big Fish Swim School, Melissa found that plans would have to wait and be put on hold as she had to battle for her life. Melissa’s type of breast cancer was very aggressive. Normal breast cancer grows at an average rate of 10%, Melissa’s type of cancer was invading her body at 76%. Fortunately, it responds very well to chemotherapy. She quickly went into treatment 17 days after being diagnosed and recently had her last round of chemo on August 5.

Sitting in a room undergoing treatment, Melissa noticed that out of the 20 people that were in the room with her, maybe only one other person was young like herself. She began reaching out to other young patients and now is very involved with offering support and raising awareness in the community. Melissa has also found a great network of support and alternative treatments through local agencies like the American Cancer Society, FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered) and the Sari Asher Center for Integrative Cancer Care.

Actions to Reduce Your Risk Breast cancer can’t be prevented; however, research has shown that there are actions that can reduce your risk. • Maintain a Healthy Weight Postmenopausal women who are overweight have a 30 to 60 percent higher breast cancer. • Add Exercise into Your Routine – Women who get regular physical activity may have a lower risk of breast cancer. • Limit Alcohol Intake – Research has found that women who had two to three alcoholic drinks per day had a 20 percent higher risk. • Breastfeed, if you can – Research has shown that mothers who breastfed for a lifetime total of one year (combined duration of breastfeeding for all children) were slightly less likely to get breast cancer. Doing all the above will not guarantee you won’t develop breast cancer. There is no prevention; Melissa followed all of these actions. She nursed each of her children for 1 year and had them before age 30. She eats a vegetarian diet, is a non-smoker, and maintains a healthy active lifestyle.

Bullying in the Workplace BY PATTI GILLIANO MSN

H ow would you feel if your son or daughter came home from school one

According to a recent FOX news article, Gary Namie, the founder of day and started telling you about another the Workplace Bullying Institute said, child who verbally accosted them, “Workplace bullying is like domestic belittled them, or made them the object abuse without the violence.” It is similar of ridicule? Most of us could agree, our to a battered relationship, because protective instinct and nurturing side the victim is always off balance, never would rear into focus and we would knowing when it will occur and hopeful guide and coach our child to stand up to that a quiet period in between could the aggressor and try to put a stop to it be turning point. Only it does not end, immediately. However, what do you do and the cycle continues with the abuser when it happens to you as an adult with a using whatever weaknesses it can find fellow co-worker? to continue the turmoil toward the victim. Oftentimes bullies will utilize a troubling situation at home to directly work in their favor of getting you while you may be “down.” Know your workplace policies and utilize them to effectively do your work and interact with others. Third, make your circle of professional contacts within your organization vast and credible. Establish many work relationships early by introducing yourself to others and sharing in ways to help complement each other’s roles to show good teamwork and camaraderie. Lastly, if you find that situations with an individual revolve around any combination of these factors, you should begin to take steps for action. Examples include frequent or unwarranted criticism, blaming without facts, excluding or omitting from appropriate meetings or events, moments of being shouted at or humiliating moments, being the target of jokes, or the feeling of being “monitored” by a co-worker. It can go as far as inappropriate joking or cursing, situations that are “set up” to make you look bad or discrediting your work in front of others. The most extreme has taken the form of stealing interoffice mail, hacking into offices and computers, or changing parts of other’s work in projects involving multiple contributors, thus setting the stage for sabotage. If this sort of behavior exists and you find yourself in the thick of it, remember that you are in control of your actions. Speak respectfully to the bully allowing them the opportunity to make himself or herself look bad. Briefly document the event in a journal immediately after it happens, and look to a good mentor or superior who you can confide and give factual examples of what happened, as well as ask for ways to diffuse or handle

differently going forward. Involve human resources if situations continue despite your attempts to stay focused on the job. Sadly, the statistics are not kind. It seems that oftentimes people just wish the situation away, rather than dealing with it as we have as parents, to put the bullies back in place. Trying to get ahead of it, before it gets out of hand, is also beneficial. If you find yourself in an environment and feel that you are being bullied, talk directly to the aggressor, if need be in the presence of your bosses. No one deserves to be treated that way either overtly or covertly. In the end, it becomes a choice and for one’s own health and well- being, it could mean it is time to move on and remove yourself from a hostile or abusive situation. If all else fails, walk tall and never let them see you sweat. You are worth more. Patti Gilliano MSN is the owner La Vida Massage and a former executive.

Bullying Prevention for our children BY SENSEI JEFF WILSON

• Nearly 30 percent of American kids have reported experiencing bullying as victims, bullies or both. • Every 7 minutes a child is bullied; 85% of the time, there is no intervention of any kind. • Each day, 160,000 students miss school due to bullying. • 43% of middle school children avoid the bathroom and locker rooms at all costs due to certainty of being bullied. • 1 of every 4 children is more than occasionally cyber-bullied. Here are some basic tips for parents to combat this growing epidemic.

Document what happened. Get a journal to create a paper trail of exactly what happened. Include dates, reactions, photographs, print screens of Facebook pages (in cases of cyber bulling) and anything else that may be seen as evidence. Let them know it’s not their fault. If your child is being bullied, it’s important to let them know that they are not being picked on because of something they did, but rather because a bully is simply being mean. Be proactive. Get your child in an activity that promotes awareness, respect, confidence and self defense. There are many simple yet effective tools that kids can learn, such as eye contact, that will make a difference.

TRICK OR TREAT BRUSH YOUR TEETH! Scare Cavities away with National Brush Day The first-ever National Brush Day will take place November 1, 2013 — the day after Halloween. It’s a perfect time to remind parents and kids about the importance of good habits for healthy teeth. Oral health is a significant issue for kids today. However many parents do not realize the extent of the problem. Here are a few surprising facts: • Dental decay is the most common chronic childhood disease • Less than half of children brush their teeth twice a day In the United States, oral disease causes

kids to miss 51 million school hours and their parents to lose 25 million work hours annually. Dental decay affects 16.5 million children in the United States. Brushing their teeth for just two minutes, twice a day can help significantly reduce kids’ risk of oral pain and dental decay. Our national campaign with the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives is intended to supply parents with simple ways to improve their children’s oral health, including: • Make sure your kids brush with fluoride toothpaste for 2 minutes, twice a day. • Use a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste

Q&A

Do you have beauty questions? Get the answers from PB Parenting’s Beauty Expert, Damiano Guardino. He is the Education Director & Owner of Tricho Salon in Wellington and has the answers to all of your hair problems!

A: First, start by taking smaller sections when blow drying. If your hairdresser is using a round brush or a paddle brush, it will certainly make a difference. Use a styling aid with either mousse or gel, but not too much. Apply it to the hair when wet and make sure it is dried thoroughly. Do not over dry the hair, as that will certainly remove shine from the hair and cause it to look frizzy. Q: I color my hair and have noticed the color fading quickly. It’s a bright red and I want to keep it as bright as I can. Any tips you have to help me maintain my color for

longer periods of time? A: Use a sulfate free shampoo. Kerastase makes a color proof shampoo that will ensure the longevity of your color so that it will last longer. Unfortunately, not taking precautions from the sun will certainly lighten your hair quicker. Protect your hair from the sun by wearing a hat or applying conditioner to your hair before and leaving it on. There is no protection from the swimming pool or the ocean, so if you want to maintain vibrantly colored hair you may want to avoid putting your hair under water as much as possible. Do you have a question for Damiano? Email them to info@pbparenting.com.

Make Learning the Alphabet Fun BY SARA KENDALL Spark alphabet skills through creative games One of the most important teachers a child will ever have is an attentive parent. And possibly the single most important skill your child will learn is how to read. As the caring parent you are, you can have a great impact on your child’s reading skills by teaching them to recognize and read their ABC’s through fun learning games. Children love to learn through play. Creative hands-on activities will engage and stimulate alphabet learning. Check out these 5 fun-filled games, introducing one game at a time. Make it fun, so they will be more willing and eager to participate in the next alphabet game you play with them. Hide and Seek Take your child on a scavenger hunt by hiding letters in a given room of your house. Use alphabet blocks, flash cards or magnetic letters. Tell your child how many you hid and have them read the letter once they have discovered it. Children love the thrill of the hunt and the discovery of finding a letter. Take the game outdoors for a new set of hiding places. Writing in the Sand You don’t need to be at the beach to draw in the sand. Create your own mini beach in

a tray. Adding a touch of water to the sand will make it firmer and the letters will last longer. Trace a letter in the sand with your index finger and have your child copy it. A good first goal for this game is to work up until your child can spell their name. Create Spaghetti Letters Children light up when you give them the green light to play with food. You can use cooked or uncooked spaghetti to shape letters of the alphabet. Write out a small set of letters on a piece of paper for them to use as reference. It’s a great way to build fine motor skills while reinforcing the 26 letters of the alphabet. Make Play Doh® Letters Children love playing with Play Doh®, so

why not add letter recognition practice into the fun. Use alphabet cookie cutter letters and have your child cut out letters. Ask them what letter they just made. Encourage your child to spell small words in play dough like cat, dog and fish. Build Lego® Letters For this game, you can find everything you need in your child’s box of Legos®. Turn an everyday toy into a new medium to create letters. An added challenge would be to encourage your child to build upright letters so they will stand up. Place the newly created letters in their bedroom or play area for a lasting sense of accomplishment.

PB Events Organic Movement’s 1st Annual Charity Gala benefiting SOS Children’s Villages Organic Movements of Boca Raton hosted their 1st Annual Charity Gala benefiting SOS Children’s Villages, a local foster home community. The cocktail gala was a successful sold-out event and 100% of the evening’s profits went directly to SOS Children’s Villages. Guests were dressed in their cocktail finest, their evening began with delicious passed hors d’oeuvres, desserts and drinks as they previewed the incredible silent auction items—including an original Toy Story script signed by the writers, brand new Bugaboo Stroller, and custom Swarovski encrusted stilettos designed by Private Label Heidi Schalk!

A live performance featuring professional and student dancers followed as the Director of SOS Children’s Villages introduced everyone to their amazing organization. Afterward, guests were invited to kick off their shoes and join Burlesque, Hip Hop and Salsa lessons before showing off their own moves and dancing the night away with a live DJ. Organic Movements makes community involvement and charitable giving a mainstay of their school. They look forward to many more events from them in the future and invite you to join them at next year’s charity gala! For more information visit www.organicmovements.com.
