Letter From The Publisher

“There’s no way to be a perfect mother, and a million ways to be a good one.” ~ Jill Churchill

Greetings, Over 9 years ago, I entered a role that I wasn’t entirely prepared for... Motherhood. One thing I am certain of though, I wouldn’t change the smiles, hugs and love that I receive from my kids for the world! There are still many days I doubt myself, but now that I have a second child, I realize that I no longer sweat a lot of the details that I did with my first. None of us are perfect and every day I just try to do the best I can with the resources I have. So this Mother’s Day, reflect how far you have come and realize no matter what, your children love you just the way you are. From all of us at PB Parenting, we hope your Mother’s Day is one that is peaceful and relaxing. We all work so hard the other 364 days a year, we all deserve one day off! There are 23 days (maybe less) of school until Summer Break! Do you have your summer planned yet? It isn’t too late to sign up for camp! We have camps for all ages and interests starting on page 22. Check out our directory online for the latest updates. Also a quick thank you to everyone for making our 4th annual Summer Camp Expo a big success! Thank you South Florida Science Center and Aquarium for hosting, Brian D. Guralnick Injury Lawyers for covering the first 200 adult entrants and sponsoring our first Summer Camp Scholarship, all the summer camp vendors and of course to all the families who attended! Check out facebook for our event photos! Happy Parenting,

South Florida Science Center and Aquarium Summer Exhibit

“Travel Adventure” featuring LEGO Bricks! May 5 – September 23

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium presents their new summer exhibit, “Travel Adventure” featuring LEGO Bricks. The interactive exhibit will take visitors on an extraordinary adventure to exotic locations through all kinds of terrain. Guests of all ages will think creatively to plan and build vehicles to move through mountains, jungles, oceans, deserts and more. Families are invited to dress up as pilots, sailors, racers and world explorers as they take the wheel of life-sized toy vehicles and engage in dynamic play. Duplo bricks will be on hand for younger guests. Visitors will be able to share their creations through a photography booth set up against a destination backdrop. Visit San Francisco, Paris, Hawaii and more real-life destinations, all while learning about travel history. Guests will answer three important questions: “Where will you go,” “How will you get there” and “What will you build?” This exciting exhibit will “open every mind to science” and allow guests of all ages to explore the creative world of travel and transportation. The exhibit opens Saturday, May 5, 2018 and will be available through Saturday, September 23, 2018. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is located at 4801 Dreher Trail, West Palm Beach. Tickets to “Travel Adventure” are included in the general admission, which is $16.95 for adults, $14.95 for seniors, $12.95 for children (3-12), FREE for children under 3, and FREE for members. 14 May 2018 | PB Parenting |

Racecar Photo Op – a large brick model of a child-sized racecar provides a fun opportunity for play and family photos.

“What Will You Build?” Main Build/Play Area (pictured at right) A brightly colored portal of bricks marks the entry to the main build area, with building activities suited for families with children age 6 and up (Note: all children age 3+ are permitted to build in this area). Each build table holds bins of parts for creative building, and labels suggest particular travel challenges that builders might conquer --- “Could your vehicle… sail across a lagoon… drive up a sandy beach… and tunnel beneath a volcano?” Once they’re ready, the vehicle can hit the road on the Terrain Test Play Table! Additionally, children can take a digital photo of their vehicle, drop in an exotic scenic backdrop, and post their unique creation to a gallery on the museum’s website.

50 Simple Ways to Show Your Daughter You Love Her BY RACHAEL MOSHMAN The Mother/Daughter Relationship is complex. Mother’s Day and the month of May might be a good time to reconnect and show your daughter how much you care about her. Local author, Rachael Moshman has survived the tween years and is now enduring the teen years with her daughter and offers this advice. Little girls are sugary sweet and filled with adoration for their Mommy. As they approach the teen years, the motherdaughter relationship often gets a bit trickier. I try to connect with my daughter every day to remind her that we still have something awesome between us, even when she’s pulling away, rolling her eyes, and muttering under her breath. Here are 50 quick and easy ways to show your daughter that you love her. 1. Let her wear your favorite bracelet. 2. Put some of your lip gloss on her before school. 3. Read the same book as her. 4. Learn the words to her favorite song. 5. Really listen to her. 6. Know the names of her crush, least favorite teacher and the mother of her best friend.

Have lunch with her at school. Get to know her friends. Hold her hand. Dance with her. Snuggle. Hug her at random times. Kiss her on the tip of her nose. Brush her hair. Let her choose the outfit you wear. Share your accomplishments with her. Ask her opinion. Tell her about your childhood. Share your hopes, dreams and thoughts with her. Show her how to do the things you enjoy. Teach her life skills (cooking, cleaning, shoe shopping). Buy her little presents just because. Sneak notes into her lunchbox or backpack. Pass a journal back and forth. Take a trip – just the two of you. Have a slumber party with her in her room. Invite her to curl up in your bed for a movie night. Tell her you’re proud of her. Compliment her often. Let her know all the things you like

about her. 31. Brag about her to others in front of her. 32. Wash her favorite nightgown or t-shirt, even though it isn’t laundry day. 33. Take tons of pictures of her. And with her. 34. Put her photo in frames all over the house. 35. Let her see you cry. 36. Be honest with her. 37. Talk to her about the hard stuff 38. Give each other makeovers. 39. Tickle her tummy. 40. Sing to her. 41. Bring cupcakes or balloons to school on her birthday. 42. Buy her flowers. 43. Tuck her in at night, even if she says she’s too big. 44. Smile when she enters the room. 45. Tell her you missed her when you reunite after work and school.

46. Help her brainstorm solutions to her problems. 47. Support her, but teach her to stand up for herself. 48. Admit when you’re wrong and apologize. 49. Introduce her to the TV shows, movies and music you loved when you were her age. 50. Tell her you love her! Often! She’ll be grown before you know it. Savor this time in her life. Strengthening your connection just takes a few minutes of positive attention. It will make you both feel great! Choosing The Right Chores For Your Kids BY TANNI HAAS Most parents want their kids to participate in the household by doing chores. And rightly so. But how do you go about deciding which chores to assign your kids – and what role should you play in helping them complete their chores? Experts agree on the following points: Start young The first and most important thing is to start young. Generally speaking, says Dr. Roger McIntire, a child psychologist, parents wait too long to assign chores because they think their kids should be ready first. “But that puts the cart before the horse,” says Dr. McIntire. “They will learn by doing. Cynthia Ewer, the author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Organized” and other well-known books on home management, agrees: “A oneyear-old will giggle if handed a clean diaper to dust the legs of the furniture.” Make sure the chores are ageappropriate While even toddlers can get excited about helping out, make sure that the chores you assign are age-appropriate. “Instead of assigning a simple task,” says Dr. Patricia Nan Anderson, a professor of early childhood education, “appeal to your child’s desire to do important things by giving it difficult tasks.” Simple

18 May 2018 | PB Parenting |

tasks are often seen as boring, and your kids may quickly lose interest and do a poor job. One way to overcome this problem is to add complexity to simple chores as your kids get older and more experienced. For example, if they have learned to put the dishes in the sink, ask them to rinse them off and put them away. Kids are often capable of much more than their parents realize – and that kids let on. As Elizabeth Pantley, the author of many best-selling books on parenting, notes only partly tongue-incheek: “Keep in mind that a child who has mastered a complicated computer game can easily run the dishwasher.” (See page 20 for a sidebar on age-appropriate chores) Make sure the chores are manageable It’s also important that the chores you assign are manageable. Karen Stephens, founder of the “Parenting Exchange” which publishes parenting books, says that you should teach your kids how to “break tasks down into manageable ‘can do’ parts.” Indeed, says Mrs. Stephens, it’s useful to “provide a checklist for steps to accomplish. This avoids children ‘forgetting’ steps or feigning confusion.” Mrs. Pantley agrees: “‘Clean your room is vague and can be interpreted in any number of ways. Instead be explicit by

saying, ‘Put your clothes in the closet, books on the shelf, dishes in the kitchen, and toys in the toy box.” You should also teach your kids how to prioritize, especially if you assign them multiple chores. As Mrs. Stephens puts it, kids need to learn how to “set and prioritize goals and determine what needs to be done to achieve them.” Finally, your kids will see the chores you assign as more manageable if they can be accomplished in a relatively short period of time: “Kids are more willing to repeat a short burst of tidying than a long marathon of cleaning,” says Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore, a child psychologist. So, what role should you play in helping your kids complete their chores? Do chores together - or at the same time It’s important to either set aside periods of time where you do chores together as a family or, at the very least, do chores at the same time. “That way,” says James Lehman, the creator of many well-known parenting programs, “no one feels as if they’re missing out or being punished by having to complete their tasks. It’s just chore time.” Mrs. Ewer agrees that you should try to have all family members do chores at the same time. “From a kid’s point of view,” says Mrs. Ewer, “it’s downright lonely to be sentenced to clean a bathroom each afternoon after school.” That becomes so much easier to stomach if the kid knows “that all the other family members are hard at work, too. Cleaning misery loves company, you might say.” Make sure your kids follow through – and don’t skirt your own responsibilities It’s also important to make sure that your kids always complete their chores. “If your kids aren’t expected to regularly follow through,” says Mrs. Pantley, “they might

start putting off chores in the hope that someone else will do them for them.” As a parent, you should complete whatever chores you have assigned yourself. As Dr. Brunner, a child psychologist, puts it: “Children learn the most from what they see you do, not what you tell them to do.” Have fun together Finally, try to make this a fun and enjoyable experience. Experts agree that you get the best results if you make doing chores a family event filled with love, laughter, and music. As Dr. Kennedy-Moore puts it, “If your attitude while doing the chores is light-hearted, your child will be more willing to participate.”

Raising a Summer Reader

When the lazy days of summer arrive and your child’s schedule is packed with swimming, camp, and family vacations, it can be a challenge to find time for reading. But kids’ reading skills don’t have to stop growing just because school’s out. Here are some ways to make reading a natural part of their summer fun: Explore your library Visit your local library to check out books and magazines that your kids haven’t seen before. Many libraries have summer reading programs, book clubs, and reading contests for even the youngest borrowers. There are often incentives, such as a free book upon completing their summer reading lists. Young kids will feel extra grown-up checking out books with their own library card.

Make your own books Pick one of your family’s favorite parts of summer — whether it’s baseball, ice cream, vacation, or the pool — and have your child draw or cut out related pictures from magazines and catalogs. Paste the pictures onto paper to make a book, and then encourage your child to write text for each page. A younger child can dictate the story for you to write down (using your child’s words). When you’re done, read the book together. Keep in touch Kids don’t have to go away to write about summer vacation. Even if your family stays home, you can encourage your child to send postcards, letters, or e-mails to friends and relatives. Ask a relative to be your child’s pen pal, and encourage a weekly exchange of letters, postcards, or e-mails.

Read on the road Going on a long car trip? Make sure the back seat is stocked with favorite reads. When you’re not at the wheel, you can read the books aloud. Get some audiobooks (many libraries have large selections) and listen to them together during drive time.

Keep up the reading rituals Even if everything else changes during the summer, keep up the reading routines already in place at your house. Read with your kids every day — whether it’s just before bedtime or under a shady tree on a lazy afternoon. And don’t forget to take a book to the beach! Just brush the sand off the pages!
