Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Wow it sure is hot outside! While I want to stay inside the comforts of my air conditioned home, my three kids have boundless energy and need to get out and play. PB Parenting is here with our 5th edition of our Beat the Heat Guide. We are coming up on the hottest months of the year so keep your cool with the help of our annual guide.

Speaking of keeping your cool, sometimes Moms need a time out! Summers are hard.

Routines are off and if you are in the midst of “camp mommy” you can find yourself longing for a break. Check out page 22 for ways to help you find some “me time” and “chillax”. Don’t worry, you have survived half the summer and school will be back soon!

Beat the South Florida Heat and Stay Cool!

Living in South Florida can sometimes be a challenge, especially during the hot, humid and sticky summer months. Even though Florida feels like summer almost the entire year long, July is the warmest month of the year with an average maximum temperature of 90 degrees.

Here are some tips to beat the summer heat and stay cool(er).

Schedule any strenuous outdoor activities or exercise for cooler times.

Usually the cooler times in Florida are sunrise and sunset. So this may mean waking up really early to squeeze in a run or waiting until the sun goes down to mow the already-too-long lawn.

Steve Brookner, a running coach of the Bikila Athletic Club in Miami, suggests exercising at 6 a.m. because it is a little cooler before the strong sun is out. He also says to have a “hydration plan before you start.” Know where you will stop for water at local water fountains or stash a few bottles of water throughout your route ahead of time.

Dress in light weight fabric.

Think about it, the more layers of clothing you have on, the hotter you will feel. That’s why they say to “put on more layers,” when you are cold. So the

same is true for when you are hot. Take it off! All of it. Ok, leave on a few pieces of clothing, but make sure it is light weight, loose fitting and cotton. Cotton is more breathable and cooler than most synthetics. Also, wear lighter colored clothes that do not attract the sun, or show your sweat. (Except for light grey.

That always shows sweat. Learned that the hard way).

Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Make sure you use a sunscreen that says “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB” protection on their labels as well. You can get a sunburn or sun exposure even on a cloudy day, so make sure to apply it all over your face, ears and lips first thing in the morning. If you plan on being outside, reapply every 4 hours and reapply it on your entire body after swimming or sweating. Wide-brimmed hats are very useful to keep the sun out of your eyes and offer some shade for your face. Just make sure not to use the hat in lieu of sunscreen.

Hydrate In hot weather it is extremely important to stay hydrated. You sweat more when the temperature is high, especially if you’re exercising or working outside.

Drinking water helps to replenish the fluids and nutrients lost by excessive sweating. Remember, when you are feeling thirsty- you are already dehydrated. Sports drinks, such as Gatorade, are high in sodium and electrolytes and are really only necessary if you are outside and working hard/ exercising for over an hour. Otherwise just plain H2O is more than enough to hydrate your body. Just remember to drink BEFORE you become parched.

On really hot days, it is best to stay inside.

This may mean hanging at home with the kids and working on arts and crafts or heading over to the library and checking out some books and movies. Many local libraries have weekly events for children that are free and fun. Since heading to the park is out of the question, a great substitute can be an indoor playground.

So plan a picnic at your local pool or have a few neighbors over for a BBQ. Either way, make sure you take time to dip into the pool and cool off before your body temperature rises.

Just remember to bring socks! Catching a matinee at the movie theatre or treating the kids to some froyo can be an equally exciting alternative to braving the hot weather.

Plan fun activities around the pool.

If you don’t have a pool or a community pool, make a play date with a friend who does! Staying cool and swimming in the pool keeps your body temperature down while also providing energy exertion for the kiddos (who knows how long you

I know this goes without saying, but somehow it still happens. According to NBCnews.com, 36 children die in overheated cars every year in the United States. This has added up to 600 deaths since 1998. It takes as little as 10 minutes for the temperature in a car to go up 20 degrees, and cracking a window or parking in shade aren’t sufficient enough to prevent this. A child’s body temperature rises five times faster than an adult and becomes lifeless with a 107-degree body temperature.

Preparing for the New School Year

There are three main reasons why you, as a parent, should embrace a physical exam as part of the preparation for this new school year. Whether mandatory or recommended by schools or a sports team, a physical exam will determinate your kid’s overall health, assess any existing medical or behavioral conditions and, provide tips and tools designed to lessen stress and make the most out the New School Year.

Determine your kid’s overall health – It is important to ensure that your child is in good physical and mental health to participate and enjoy in all school’s activities. During the child’s screen, a pediatrician will review the medical and immunization history, record height and weight, take blood pressure, examine heart, lungs, ears, nose, throat, and assess your child’s mobility while addressing any social concerns.

Address any existing condition – It is very important to address existing conditions with a qualified physician

A Pediatrician can uncover potential health problems that could worsen during school year, prescribe medications if needed, and, prepare and give tips and tools to manage conditions while away from home. Time Out For Mom, 10 Ways To Chillax During The Dog Days

BY CHRISTINA KATZ Summertime can be challenging for moms. While everyone else in the family is focused on fun, mom is juggling schedules and making to-do lists just like during the school year. And in many places, summer days get scorching hot and uncomfortable.

So moms are often so busy trying to keep everyone chillin’ that they forget to relax a bit themselves. When is it mom’s turn to recharge in the summer?

Luckily, little reprieves for mom are always close at hand. Most moms don’t need an entire day away to feel refreshed. Usually taking a half-hour break will put the smile back on your face. Here are ten ways to take a refreshing timeout, so you can enjoy every longer-than-usual summer day.

Indulge In A Facial. The amount of time it takes to give yourself a facial is just the 22 July 2016 | PB Parenting |

right amount of time to regroup. You can whip something up quickly in your kitchen or keep ready-made facials from your local drugstore on hand. Here’s an quick recipe for a calming and cooling mask: mix one fourth cup of whole, plain yogurt with two tablespoons of honey and spread it all over your face and neck. Rinse well after fifteen minutes and pat your face dry.

Get Wet. Is there a local pool where you can swim your stress away? Maybe a neighbor has a lap pool you can borrow?

If you own a pool yourself, try ten minutes of just floating all by yourself. Don’t use a device, just spread out your arms and legs and let the water buoy you up. In a pinch, pour yourself a nice lukewarm tub with lavender oil and bubbles and sink in.

Imagine yourself being carried along by softly scented clouds.

Christmas In July. Adult coloring books are not only relaxing, they can also transport you to a different time and space. Why not take a break from the heat and dive into a colorful holiday scene. Turn on some Christmas Carols while you color your stress away and dream of gently falling snow.

Stop Censoring Yourself. What’s your favorite road trip movie? How about your most-loved hot and steamy summer romance? Sometimes moms just want to watch something that is not appropriate for children. Stop restricting yourself to children’s fare. While the kids keep themselves busy for half an hour, you can pop in one ear bud and watch the next installment of a movie that makes you feel like a footloose and fancy-free grown-up.

Helpful Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe this Summer

Parents and kids rejoice during the Summer. No more lunches to pack, no more homework hustle at night, and less rushed mornings getting kids out of bed racing to beat the school bell. We can all breathe a united sigh of relief. With all the wonderful things summer offers, there’s also several things that parents need to be cautious of when it comes to their kids’ safety during the warm weather months.

Whether your children attend a summer program, daycare, have a nanny, stay home alone during the day, or stay home with a parent, we’ve got a few tips to help keep your kids happy, healthy, and safe during this time of year and beyond: Really Know Your Neighborhood You may already be firmly planted in a wonderful, caring neighborhood where you know all your neighbors or maybe you’re newer to an area and are still getting to know your neighbors. Like Mr. Rogers said, “Who are the people in your neighborhood?” They may be

more than the people you meet each day. Take a closer look at the neighbors surrounding your area by doing a little Google research and performing a background check to confirm there are no sex offenders or other violators to be concerned about. It will provide you with a huge piece of mind. Take it a step further and organize a neighborhood watch group. Work together as a team to help jointly keep your kids safe. Also make a point of not allowing your kids to answer the door when you’re not home unless they’re older teens and limit it to only people they know well. During the summer months there’s a record number of door-to-door salesman pushing everything from lawn care services to cleaning products. Ask them to never tell a stranger they’re home alone without parents or allow them into the house for any reason.

Parental Controls on the Internet Parental controls are a very important step for parents to keep their kids safe while online. Even if you’re home with

your kids and in another room, one simple video on YouTube can pop up and expose your kids to something way beyond on their years. One minute they’re watching Minecraft videos and the next video that pops up is adult content. Apps allow you to not only block inappropriate content, it lets you choose the rating such as G, PG, etc.

You can also block certain sites and set timers so you don’t come home to find your kids have been on their iPads for 8 hours straight. Consider changing the password each day so you’re in control of what happens if your guidelines aren’t followed for electronics use. It’s also important to have serious, heartto-heart talks with your kids about the importance of sharing their information online. Be explicit and let them know the dangers of strangers trying to find out their info and trying to entice them to meet under a fake persona. Make

sure they know the real life dangers out there and that you’re not trying to control their personal.

A Different Kind of Stranger Danger Kids today have been brought up with the term “stranger danger,” but to most kids it might just mean someone they don’t know knocking on your door or someone at the grocery store they shouldn’t speak to.

Unfortunately in today’s society, it’s important to really talk to your kids about the dangers of strangers and those that are not strangers but are a danger. The challenge is speaking to them about these realities without scaring them or making them fearful of all people. Obviously you should speak to them about strangers hanging around playgrounds, public pools, and soccer/baseball fields. People that look suspicious and have no real reason to be at this spot. Tell them exactly what to do in this case such as telling their coach or other adult they trust. They should also know what to do in the event someone they do know or have met before acts in a behavior that doesn’t feel right.

Be upfront and tell them to trust their instincts if an adult asks inappropriate questions or does something that makes them feel uncomfortable (touching, talking about sex, etc.)— even if they know this person or “should” trust them. Explain this could be a coach, volunteer, or even a parent driving them to practices. There’s a fine line between sharing too little and too much information, but it’s crucial they know how to handle these situations if they arise. Make them feel comfortable telling another adult or to call or tell you immediately.

As a parent, it’s a good idea to check out the people your child will be in contact with beforehand by doing a simple background check (using a service such as BeenVerified.com). It’s a good idea to check out coaches, car pool parents, and neighbors or community members who may interact with your kids.

Set-up Guidelines for Sports & Activities Make a point of arriving and picking up on time. Never drop off your kids too early or late without an adult present.

Require your kids to remain at the field, school, event, or in a designated area with an adult until you arrive for pickup. If you’re not sure an adult will be present, contact another parent attending and ask for their help. Always try to have a back-up person appointed in the event you’re stuck in traffic, caught in a meeting, or just running late. You can forge this agreement with a fellow parent you trust. You can be the “go to” person for their child and them for yours. Provide your child with their phone number as well. Request your kids never “start off” for home on their own. If your child isn’t going to attend, let the appropriate people know.

Rules & Parent Check-Ins Make a simple rule with your caregivers (if possible) or kids to have daily checkins at specific times so you know your kids are safe and you can be at work without constant worry. Be clear about your household rules and rules outside the home and what the consequences are for not following the rules. It might make sense to buy a basic, non-smart phone or reloadable cellphone for your tweens and teens for the summer if they’ll be busy and away from you during the day. This makes check-ins easy and you’re able to reach your kids when you need to or if there’s an

emergency and they need you.

Having expectations for your kids during the day can be a positive thing as well, like having a set of daily chores that are expected of them (such as feeding pets, making bed and picking up room, reading for 30 minutes, etc.).

The children come to the aid of a green sea turtle replica and Dr. Logger teaches the group about common injuries and illnesses that affect these endangered animals. No pre-registration is required.
