Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Happy Birthday Abby! Nine years ago, my daughter and first child was born and on that day a mother was also born. Motherhood certainly has been filled with challenges but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I love my daughter’s smile, her hugs and unconditional love. I certainly miss her being my little baby but I love the new stage where we can do fun mother/ daughter outings like shopping, movies or a sushi lunch. So on my daughter’s birthday this month, I not only celebrate her ninth year, but reflect on the fact that I am celebrating 9 years of being a parent and surviving the diapers, sleepless nights, teething, terrible twos and all the fun stuff of being mom. I’m getting ready for the next stage, wherever it takes me. (Oh no tweens and teens are coming!) If your child also has an upcoming birthday (and congratulations to you too mom and dad!) check out our Party Planning guide to help with your celebration planning starting on page 10. Save the date! PB Parenting is bringing our Summer Camp Expo back! Join us Sunday, April 29th from 11 AM - 2 PM at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. We will have a day of Family Fun with over 40 local summer camps and FREE admission for the first 200 adults and kids are FREE during the expo. For more details go to https://www. facebook.com/events/2067680356793740. Happy Parenting,

Party On!

Party planning shouldn’t be a headache or be stressful. Keep your day easy breezy with some of PB Parenting’s favorite party planning tips!

1. Start with the invite list. It dictates everything: How large a venue you need, what kind of theme or activities you pick, etc.

10 Party Tips to keep your party easy and fun!

4. Skip the Goodie Bags! There! We said it! We love the generous spirit behind goodie bags and party favors, but we could all do without random tchotchkes that get played with for five seconds (if that). How about hosting a simple craft activity and letting the result serve as the parting gift? Or taking a group photo and printing out copies (at the party or after) for each child to keep?

2. What about siblings? Before age 7, inviting siblings is a nice gesture if you 5. Food- Offer a variety of foods. Ordering have the space and funds. While sending email invitations is standard these days, most guests still appreciate a good oldfashioned physical thank-you card— particularly one written by the birthday child.

10. Consider Throwing Parties Every Few Years - Everyone should feel special on her birthday, but there’s no rule that says your kid has to have an elaborate party every year. Planning a birthday party doesn’t have to make you want to pull your hair out! It also helps to connect with the right vendors to make sure your party goes off without a hitch! Ten Fun Activities To Do With and For Your Kids On Valentine’s Day BY TIFFANY DOERR GUERZON

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about romantic love. Show your kids how much you love them by doing some of these fun V-Day activities.

5. Draw a trail of hearts on the driveway or sidewalk in red and pink chalk. Kids can follow the path by hopping from one to the next on the way to the car or bus stop.

1. Slip a Valentine card under each kids pillow and tell them to check underneath for a fun surprise when they wake up.

6. Visit a local nursing home and hand out flowers or valentines to the residents.

2. For breakfast, cut out toast with a heart shaped cookie cutter. Spread the heart shape with cream cheese and top with strawberry or raspberry jam. Place the piece of toast with the heart cut out on a plate and fill the center with red berries. Wet the rims of wine glasses or plastic cups then dip into pink or red sugar. Fill the cups with sparkling apple juice. 3. Draw a large, open heart on the bathroom mirror at kid-height with a dry erase marker. Write “I love” with an arrow pointing to the heart shape. When your child looks in the mirror to brush their teeth, his or her face will be in the heart!

7. Cook up a valentine-themed dinner. Serve heart-shaped individual pizzas, or top pizza with heart-shaped pepperoni. (Cut pepperoni pieces into hearts with a mini cookie cutter.) Many pizza companies offer heart shaped pizza for take out or delivery on V-Day as well. Serve with pink milk or sparkling juice. 8. During dinner, have each family member say why they love the person sitting next to them. Go around the table one way, then do it again in the opposite direction.

9. After dinner, cuddle up in PJs to watch a Valentine’s Day show such as a Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown,Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That: Hurray! 4. Glam up lunch boxes by using your heart It’s Valentine’s Day, Winnie the Pooh, A cookie cutter to shape sandwiches. Include Valentine for You, WordWorld: My Fuzzy a treat of valentine candy and, of course, a Valentine, or Madly Madagascar. love note. 16 February 2018 | PB Parenting |

10. Last but not least, don’t forget storytime! Try one of these love-themed books: Queen of Hearts by Mary Englebreit, Love, Splat by Rob Scotten, Snowy Valentine by David Peterson, I Love You, Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt or Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day is Cool by James Dean. Spread the love by trying one or more of these ideas this February 14th. By replacing candy and gifts with time spent together, you will surely brighten your kids day and make fun family memories. Divide royal icing into three equal portions, and tint 3 shades of rose. Thin a portion of each shade following recipe directions. Use tip 3 and full-strength tinted icing to outline cookies. Use thinned tinted icing in cut decorating bag to fill in cookies; gently tap to smooth icing. Let dry overnight.

Desserts with dimension. Triple your treats by stacking three decorated cookies in different sizes together and Use icing to attach cookies, stacking largest attach them with icing. Complement with color. A simple piping technique looks stunning when piped in different colors on your cookies. Get to gifting. Wrap your finished treats in a Valentine’s Day treat bag or box.

Raising Confident Kids It takes confidence to be a kid. Whether going to a new school or stepping up to bat for the first time, kids face a lot of uncharted territory.

when kids show off a new skill, and reward them with praise when they achieve a goal or make a good effort.

Naturally, parents want to instill a can-do attitude in their kids so that they’ll bravely take on new challenges and, over time, believe in themselves. While each child is a little different, parents can follow some general guidelines to build kids’ confidence.

With plentiful opportunities, good instruction, and lots of patience from parents, kids can master basic skills — like tying their shoes and making the bed. Then, when other important challenges present themselves, kids can approach them knowing that they have already been successful in other areas.

Self-confidence rises out of a sense of competence. In other words, kids develop confidence not because parents tell them they’re great, but because of their achievements. Sure, it’s good to hear encouraging words from mom and dad. But words of praise mean more when they refer to a child’s specific efforts or new abilities. When kids achieve something, whether it’s brushing their own teeth or riding a bike, they get a sense of themselves as able and capable, and tap into that high-octane fuel of confidence. Building self-confidence can begin very early. When babies learn to turn the pages of a book or toddlers learn to walk, they are getting the idea “I can do it!” With each new skill and milestone, kids can develop increasing confidence. Parents can help by giving kids lots of opportunities to practice and master their skills, letting kids make mistakes and being there to boost their spirits so they keep trying. Respond with interest and excitement 22 February 2018 | PB Parenting |

Stay on the Sidelines Of course, supervision is important to ensure that kids stay safe. But to help them really learn a new skill, it’s also important not to hover. Give kids the opportunity to try something new, make mistakes, and learn from them. For instance, if your son wants to learn how to make a peanut butter sandwich, demonstrate, set up the ingredients, and let him give it a try. Will he make a bit of a mess? Almost certainly. But don’t swoop in the second some jelly hits the countertop. In fact, avoid any criticism that could discourage him from trying again. If you step in to finish the sandwich, your son will think, “Oh well, I guess I can’t make sandwiches.” But if you have patience for the mess and the time it takes to learn, the payoff will be real. Someday soon he’ll be able to say, “I’m hungry for lunch, so I’m going to make my own sandwich.”You might even reply, “Great, can you make me one, too?”What a clear sign

of your faith in his abilities! Offer Encouragement and Praise Sometimes, kids give up when frustrations arise. Help by encouraging persistence in the midst of setbacks. By trying again, kids learn that obstacles can be overcome. Once kids reach a goal, you’ll want to praise not only the end result but also their willingness to stick with it. For instance, after your son has mastered making that peanut butter sandwich you might show your confidence by saying,“Next time, want to learn how to crack an egg?”Sandwich-fixing and egg-cracking might not seem like huge achievements, but they’re important steps in the right direction — toward your child’s independence. Throughout childhood, parents have chances to prepare kids to take care of themselves. Eventually, your grown-up kids just might say thanks for how prepared they feel for the road ahead — a road they can take with confidence.

‘Tis the Season for the Flu 7 Tips from After Hours Pediatrics Flu season is in full swing and our area is already being hit hard. After Hours Pediatrics medical director, Dr. Lou Romig, has indicated that each of our clinics is seeing multiple flu patients every day. Dr. Romig has offered these important points about proper medical care for children amid the flu outbreak: 1. If someone has flu-like symptoms (fever that’s hard to control, body aches, sore throat, runny nose, cough, headache, vomiting, diarrhea), there’s an excellent chance they have the flu, even if a flu test comes back negative. The flu test can miss 30-50% of those who really do have the flu. CDC is encouraging providers not to do flu tests on every patient with flu symptoms, but to assume they have it based on history and examination alone. 2. Most people who have the flu or flu-like symptoms don’t need any treatment aside from rest, hydration and symptomatic treatment with nonprescription medications, such as acetaminophen. 3. Tamiflu is NOT a miracle cure for the flu. Studies show that, at best, treatment with Tamiflu within the first 48 hours of symptoms may decrease the period of illness by 12 -24 hours. So, instead of being

24 February 2018 | PB Parenting |

sick for 5 days, a patient might be sick for 4 days. It may or may not decrease the intensity of the symptoms. Tamiflu tends to give kids stomach pain and vomiting, which may only make them feel worse than if they didn’t take it at all. 4. There are certain types of people who are at greater risk of complications of the flu and who should be treated with Tamiflu in the hope of lessening their illness. These people include: children less than one year of age, the elderly and anyone with chronic illnesses such as asthma, epilepsy, heart disease or a compromised immune system. 5. Treatment with Tamiflu may also be considered to help cut down on transmission of the disease to other household members who are at increased risk if they get the flu. For example, Tamiflu should be considered for a healthy 5-year-old child with the flu whose frail grandmother lives with the family. That grandmother should also see her primary care provider as she might also benefit from taking Tamiflu as a prevention measure. 6. Otherwise healthy children with symptoms of the flu don’t absolutely have

to be seen by a doctor unless they have symptoms like severe pain anywhere, the inability to stay hydrated or difficulty breathing. It’s always better to be conservative in seeking medical care, but parents may find themselves waiting for a long time in busy doctors’ offices, urgent care centers or ERs, only to find the provider may or may not test the child for the flu and may or may not prescribe Tamiflu. Antibiotics should not be prescribed unless there are signs of a bacterial infection. All the Amoxicillin in the world will not cure the flu, because antibiotics don’t work on viruses. Children with chronic illnesses, and especially those with immune system compromise, should be seen if they get flu-like symptoms because they may benefit from Tamiflu more than children who have no long-term medical problems. 7. Anyone with flu-like symptoms should stay home until they have had no fever for at least 24 hours. Kids should stay out of school and daycare. Adults should stay home from work or school. One of the reasons the flu spreads so easily and quickly is that people don’t stay home while they’re sick. There are many good reasons why a family might need to a send a sick child to school or daycare, or a sick adult might have to go to work, but it’s in everyone’s best interests for people who are sick to stay home. Dr. Lou Romig is the Medical Director, After Hours Pediatrics Urgent Care. After Hours Pediatrics provides urgent care to children (newborns to 21 years of age) with non-lifethreatening illnesses and injuries by boardcertified pediatricians on weeknights and weekends, when most primary care physician (PCP) offices are closed. After Hours Pediatrics treats respiratory illnesses, broken bones, cuts, burns, sports injuries and more. With lab and x-ray services available, the average patient visit is less than an hour. Visit them at afterhourspediatrics.com or 6250 Lantana Road, Suite 12 in Lake Worth.
