To be or not to Beebo? BY: SAMANTHA G. CLARK

A few years ago, I was talking with an acquaintance of mine about this unique invention he planned to create. At the time I thought he was an ambitious dreamer, but fast forward to present day and Martin Hill has become a local celebrity among Wellington and Palm Beach County parents, and his popularity continues to grow. His invention, The Beebo, enables parents to bottle feed their baby with ease while also having a free hand. It enhances feeding time by allowing the free hand to hold a book or enjoy a meal. In Hills words, the Beebo is a “hands-free bottle-holder that drapes over either shoulder.” The Beebo is not meant to replace a parent or caregiver’s bonding time, it is meant to maximize it. Hill invented the Beebo about four years ago when he noticed that his then infant son, Jake, seemed calmer when being read to during his feeding. Hill wanted to be able to feed his son and read at the same time. This started

the wheels turning. The initial Beebo was created in Hill’s garage and made of products he had laying around. His neighbor jokingly said, “I want one!” and the rest is history. The prototype was initially called The Boobie, but his wife quickly vetoed that name and suggested a more acceptable one. After seeing the positive feed-back he generated from friends and family, Hill poured more of his time and energy into creating a bigger and better Beebo. He decided to give up his job as an electrical engineer to focus 100% on his baby, The Beebo, and in September of 2015 he took the biggest gamble of his life and decided to pitch his invention on NBC’s “Shark Tank.” Hill spent six months preparing for his casting and even had friends prepare mock “Shark Tank” scenarios so that he felt completely prepared when confronted with the cutthroat sharks. Hill knew he only had one shot at convincing the sharks to invest in his

company—which at that time never even sold one Beebo. After waiting in line with over 700 people, Hill was selected to pitch his product to the show’s casting producer. A few months later he found himself in front of some of the most ferocious TV personalities since Simon Cowell. Hill had two sharks offer a deal for his product, Ashton Kutcher who was a guest on the show at the time and QVC personality, Lori Greiner. Ironically, it was the exact deal that Hill predicted he would receive just hours before to his wife, Sarah-- $200,000 for 30% of the investment. Since his episode on the “Shark Tank,” Hill says that doors have been opening, opportunities are abundant and claims that “The show sets the foundation for success.” He continues to remain in contact with his investors, Kutcher and Greiner, and with their guidance, plans to reveal a revamped Beebo in early May. Hill receives emails daily asking for advice from hopeful inventors and he says; “Sometimes in life you need to ‘roll the dice’ to make your dreams and ideas become a reality, but my word of advice 10 April 2016 | PB Parenting |

Hill’s initial purpose for creating the Beebo was to help bottle feeding parents bond with their child and allow them to have an extra hand. Since his episode on the “Shark Tank” aired, he has received countless emails from all over the country from gracious consumers claiming how the Beebo changed their lives. According to his website, parents with disabilities have a chance to feed their child with ease, thanks to the Beebo. “From Sonya – ‘Thank you for your product! You’re helping many in ways you may never know. Jason (my son) lost his arm at age 4 to cancer. His being able to help feed his baby girl is a beautiful gift.’” Hill is overjoyed with the amount of support he has received from friends and family and also the Wellington and Palm Beach County Community. The Beebo is becoming a household name among local residents and after the airing of Hill’s “Shark Tank” episode, the orders have come pouring in. Hill will be releasing the latest model of the Beebo in early May and then consumers can purchase the product at their local Buy Buy Baby. Orders can be placed now on Amazon.com and www.thebeebo. com. Samantha G. Clark is a former high school English teacher turned stay-athome mom. When she isn’t chasing after her four children that range from ages seven years old to six months, she enjoys running and spending time with her family. In the future she hopes to continue writing and be the next Carrie Bradshaw.

Is Entrepreneurship For You?

Did Martin Hill’s story inspire you? Starting your own business can be a rewarding experience. It can offer numerous advantages such as being your own boss, setting your schedule and doing something you enjoy. Consider whether you have the following characteristics and skills associated with successful entrepreneurs: Comfortable with taking risks: Being your own boss also means you’re the one making tough decisions. Entrepreneurship involves uncertainty. Do you avoid uncertainty in life? If yes, then this may not be the best fit for you. Independent: Entrepreneurs have to make a lot of decisions on their own. If you find you can trust your instincts — and you’re not afraid of rejection every now and then — you could be on your way to being an entrepreneur. Persuasive: You may have the greatest idea in the world, but if you cannot persuade customers, employees and potential lenders or partners, you may find entrepreneurship to be challenging. Able to negotiate: As a small business owner, you will need to negotiate everything from leases to contract terms to rates. Creative: Are you able to think of new ideas? Can you imagine new ways to solve problems? Entrepreneurs must be able to think creatively. Supported by others: Before you start a business, it’s important to have a strong support system in place. You’ll be forced to make many important decisions, especially in the first months of opening your business. Still think you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur and start a new business? Check out www.sba.gov for more tips and help on opening a small business.

11 Secrets of Happy Moms BY CHRISTA MELNYK HINES

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” - Dalai Lama We know that happiness is an emotion that can come and go. But how do we recapture that bubbly feeling amid the challenges and stresses of parenthood? Here are a few tips from moms for staying positive and feeling good. Lean on community. Several moms polled for this article agreed that moms’ night outs with their friends help them feel more optimistic. And science proves it. Studies find that time spent bonding with friends boosts a woman’s level of oxytocin, a natural hormone that reduces stress. Check out mothers’ groups in your area if you are struggling to build a support network. Commit to healthy living. Women who make time to care for their bodies, enjoy a stronger self-image and feel more selfconfident and energetic. Exercise, try to get adequate sleep, schedule regular massages and make healthy food choices to feel your best. “I know that when I am reasonably well-rested and happy, I am absolutely more patient, energetic and empathetic to everyone in my household,” says Erica Wilson, a mom of one.

Take time for personal pursuits. Whether you like surfing Pinterest, training for a 5K or simply taking a warm bubble bath, moments stolen throughout the week contribute to our overall sense of well-being. “I try to take at least a few minutes a day outside. I close me eyes, take deep breaths, and listen to the sounds,” says Melanie Werner, a mom of one. Nourish yourself. During the rush of the week, most of us throw meals together just to get our hungry crew fed. If you enjoy cooking, find a day when you can slow down and relish the preparation. The process of chopping and measuring ingredients is meditative and soothing. Create a feast to delight all of the senses by serving your meal on a table laid out with your favorite dishes and cheerful flowers. Laugh. Family life can be funny. Kids say hilarious things. Pay attention and write those gems down. Next time you need a lift, read them. Need more ideas? Look at funny family videos or photos, hang out with lighthearted friends, watch a silly movie or read a humorous book. Follow a spiritual practice. Studies find that people who lean on an inner belief system are happier. You don’t have to be religious

Safety keeps the fun in pool time. A fun day at the pool can quickly get drained away, especially when kids get caught up in the thrill of the moment and forget to be safe. Should an accident happen, The Children’s Hospital at Palms West is nearby. Our full-service pediatric hospital is staffed with experienced doctors and nurses who handle all types of injuries. So, when your child needs expert emergency care, you can count on us to provide it 24/7. Know and act upon these important pool safety tips: • Keep a close eye on your kids while they are in the pool. • Ensure your kids know where water is deep and shallow. • Have your kids stay away from pool drains. • Practice water safety skills like first aid, emergency response and CPR. Make sure there is appropriate safety equipment near the pool, such as life rings, reaching poles and a first-aid kit.

to be spiritual. You can feel a connection to spirituality through helping others, nature, yoga, music, art, personal meditation or journaling. Michelle Hovick, a mom of one, says the “Elevation” church app is one of her favorite spiritual gateways to a mood shift. Practice gratitude. In a gratitude study at Eastern Washington University, researchers found a positive correlation between gratitude and happiness. “We have found that grateful individuals tend to be happy individuals and that grateful thinking improves mood,” the researchers report. Try writing down three things you are thankful for each day--small moments count too. Get a groove on. Whether she participates in a Jazzercise class or switches on upbeat dance tunes in her kitchen, Jessie Mallicoat, a mom of three, says, “If I’m in a bad mood, I put on some ‘dancy’ music and it usually helps.” In fact, studies find that dancing boosts the body’s feel-good endorphins.

Dancing has even been found to reverse depression and increase self-confidence. Set boundaries. Moms who are happier make conscious decisions on a daily basis about who and what is allowed into their lives. Switching to this way of thinking is empowering. You don’t have to be harsh or hurtful to accomplish this goal. Politely decline invitations that don’t fit with your priorities and limit interactions with negative individuals. Access good childcare. Seek reliable childcare in order to feel secure pursuing personal interests, maintaining routine health check-ups and for date nights with your partner. A positive marriage contributes to the overall emotional health and happiness of your family. Having trouble finding a sitter? Avoid comparison. Parenting philosophies that work well in one family, may not work well in another. Thanks to the influx of information at our fingertips, parents have no shortage of advice. Decide which strategies make sense for your family. And beware of spending too much time on social media if you’re starting to feel like you don’t measure up. “Being happy with yourself and how you parent is key to accepting other moms and how they parent, which creates a more supportive parenting community all around,” says Mandy Yokim, mom of two. Freelance journalist, Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two boys. She finds happiness while exploring new destinations with her family, spending time with her book club friends, and cooking. I learned the hard way.” -Melissa S., Boca Raton “Make cleaning and picking up a game. It makes it an enjoyable experience for you and baby. “ -Michelle G, Palm Beach Gardens “It’s the hardest job you’ll ever love, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.” -Gayle G., Boynton Beach “Have faith in your parenting. Pregnancy Sleep Disruption Solutions BY KERRIE MCLOUGHLIN

What pregnant woman doesn’t enjoy her sleep being interrupted 12 times a night while she goes to the bathroom, sniffles through a stuffy nose and rubs out a few leg cramps? (yeah, right) While you may theoretically get 8 hours of sleep at night, the sleep disturbances of pregnancy (a good way to prepare you for caring for a newborn in the middle of the night) can leave you feeling quite groggy the next morning. Below is a problem-solving guide to hopefully gain you some longer stretches of sleep. Problem: Insomnia Solutions: Take a warm bath and do some relaxation exercises before bed. Try to stop worrying about things like what color to paint the nursery or who to invite to the baby shower. White noise from something like a fan may help. If your baby is squirming and kicking, try rocking back and forth in bed or rubbing your belly to get him to sleep. If you can’t sleep because you’re worried about labor, arm yourself during the day with information from books and the Internet (take a pass on any negative stories you may come across). Try listening to Dr. Frank Lawlis’s “Positive Birthing” CD. If insomnia becomes a chronic problem, speak to your doctor. Problem: Back, hip and leg pain caused by carrying extra weight. Jane Hammond of Olathe says, “I remember third trimester

18 April 2016 | PB Parenting |

with my daughter Eden – I was a bloated walrus! My hips hurt so bad, and lying on one side was taking its toll.” Solutions: Pillows galore! Consider purchasing a U-shaped body pillow made just for pregnant women, or just grab pillows from home and place one behind your back, one under your belly and one between your knees. Hanging out on a heating pad for a while before bed does wonders for lower back pain, but never fall asleep on one. Problem: Leg cramps (I swear these were designed to prepare you for the pain of labor!) Solutions: If you feel a leg cramp coming on, keep your toes pointed toward yourself. If you get a cramp anyway, massage the spot until the cramp subsides. Julie Dorset, mom of one, says, “I had bad leg cramps and the doctor recommended I take calcium tablets for them.” Problem: Having to get up to go to the bathroom every couple of hours Solutions: Try not to drink too much a couple of hours before you go to sleep, limit your caffeine intake and make sure you go to the bathroom before getting into bed. Otherwise, unfortunately, there’s not too much you can do (unless you want to wear Depends) since your baby has taken up residence on top of your bladder. One mom says, “I was so thankful to finally have my kids and not be pregnant so I wasn’t waking

hourly to go to the bathroom. I actually enjoyed the 2 a.m. feedings because at least I could sleep for 3 hours at a time!” Problem: Heartburn. A mom shares, “With both my boys, I had horrible heartburn and acid reflux during my third trimester.” Solutions: Keep some Tums on your headboard, nightstand or under your pillow. For worse heartburn, ask your doctor if you can use something like Zantac for longer relief. One mom shared, “Toward the end of both pregnancies, sleeping propped up on pillows was the only way I could get any rest.” Problem: Hunger and thirst in the middle of the night Solutions: Keep a bottle of water by your bed (but of course this will exacerbate the problem of frequent bathroom trips … what a cruel joke!) and some snacks like those packaged peanut butter crackers. If you must get up, grab some milk and/or turkey, both of which

contain the sleep-inducing tryptophan. Problem: Stuffy nose Solutions: Check with your doctor first, but sometimes a simple saline nasal spray will work just fine. Also, some doctors may recommend something like Flonase or ChlorTrimeton (which can also make you sleepy: bonus!) for allergies. Overthe-counter nasal sprays are recommended for use for no more than a few days, and only if nothing else does the trick. So now you know you don’t have to wake up feeling like a zombie in the morning just because you’re pregnant! When one of these sleep problems strikes, just grab this handy article (better yet, post it by your bed!) for some instant relief. Happy slumbering! Kerrie McLoughlin (TheKerrieShow.com) has experienced her share of sleep disturbances (including drooling!) with 5 pregnancies. Do Away with Diaper Rash

Do Away with Diaper Rash BY SARAH LYONS As parents we do everything in our power to avoid an uncomfortable and painful rash for our little ones, but realistically, even the most diligent parent has to deal with diaper in the first few years of parenthood. Knowing the common culprits of diaper rash and how to treat it will help keep baby happy and rash free.

brand of diapers or wipes you are using. Your child could also have an allergy to a new food that is causing loose stools, which in turn cause added irritation and wetness in the diaper area. With some trial and error you may be able to narrow down the cause of the rash and help your child’s rash improve greatly with a few small changes.

Common Culprits of Diaper Rash

Treat and Prevent Diaper Rash Clean and Dry - Make sure baby is clean and dry before putting on a new diaper. Remember to pat baby dry rather than rub which will further irritate skin Air Dry - Let baby go diaper free. When weather allows, spend some time outside sans diaper. The fresh air will help baby heal faster. A Gentler Clean - Use mild, alcohol free wipes or try using a squirt bottle of water to gently clean baby. Read the Label - Use a diaper cream with Zinc Oxide or Petroleum Jelly on the ingredient list. (www.webmd.com) Apply a protective layer of cream to help prevent future rash. Go Green - Cloth diapers made with natural fabrics are gentler than disposable diapers which may contain chemicals that can irritate baby. Try Homemade - Making homemade wipes or diaper cream allows you to decide what ingredients touch your baby’s skin and

Culprit # 1: Infrequent Diaper Changes We have the best intentions when it comes to changing our babies but sometimes things happen and that wet diaper stays on a little too long causing red, sore, irritated skin. Even the most absorbent diaper can allow wetness to touch the skin, which can leave baby’s bottom red and irritated. Culprit # 2: Yeast Infection The diaper area is warm and moist, making it easy for bacterial infections, like yeast, to grow and flourish. Yeast passes through the child’s digestive system and eventually lands in the diaper next to the warm damp skin. This can result in a rash in the folds of the skin. (babycenter.com) Regular diaper creams won’t improve this type of rash. It’s best to speak to your doctor about treatment, which may include an antifungal cream. Culprit # 3: Allergies or Sensitivities It is possible your baby is sensitive to the

Check with your pediatrician to see if he can recommend a probiotic that is safe for your child. “Some research has shown that consuming probiotics... can positively affect your child’s balance of bacteria.” (parents.com) Try something new - Experiment with a new brand of diaper or wipes, change your cloth diaper detergent, make sure your baby has a proper fitting diaper, take note of any reactions to new foods, and remember every baby is different so what works for one child may not be a good fit for another child.

Naming Baby: Tips to Manage Opinionated Feedback BY CHRISTA MELNYK HINES

With the debate that erupts around naming babies, expectant parents may wonder: How much should popular trends and other’s opinions influence our decision? And, how should we manage negative feedback for the name we choose? Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard, says parents should consider their objectives when choosing a name. You might select a name to honor a friend or family member or simply because it sings to your heart, regardless of current trends. “On the the other hand, if you see a name as a child’s calling card that will represent her to the broader world, you have to be willing to step outside of your personal taste and try to see it from other perspectives,” she says. How will the name you bequeath impact your child down the road? “It wouldn’t be fair to your child to choose a name that all of his future friends and family absolutely loathe,” Wattenberg says. Although you rely on your friends and family for their honesty, advice and perspective, you get to make the final decision and you may not be able to please everyone. Keep your cool. If you hear negative feedback, stay calm and avoid getting defensive. “Explain the history, the meaning to you, the love you have for a certain name,” says Sharon O’Neill, a marriage and family psychotherapist and author of A Short Guide to a Happy Marriage. “Then nicely explain that 22 April 2016 | PB Parenting |

you understand that others may not see it as you do, but that you would ask that everyone be supportive. Anything less would never be good for any child to eventually feel.” Consider concessions. Sue LeBreton says she made the mistake of sharing the girl’s name that she and her husband were considering with her mother-in-law. “I loved the name Charlotte,” she said. But her mother-in-law clearly did not. The couple chose a different girl’s name on the list, naming their daughter Abigail instead. “What amuses me is that today Charlotte is one of my daughter’s favorite names for dolls!” LeBreton says. Discuss conflicting cultural beliefs. Clashing cultural traditions can also fuel conflict when it comes to naming a baby. Madonna Chien says that her husband wanted to name their son after his father. “My mother disapproved because per Chinese tradition, it’s considered insulting to name your child after a family member. However, we explained to my mother that my Chinese father-in-law understood the intent and was okay with it,” she says. Suggest nicknames. Try appeasing a disappointed family member by offering an olive branch in the form of a nickname. “Grandparents or an aunt or other family members may have a nickname that they use in their special relationship with your child,” O’Neill says. Give it time. Stacy Weiland also met resistance

from her mother when she decided on her son’s name, which is Andrew. “My mother wanted me to name him after my grandmother and grandfather. But I didn’t like them very much so I didn’t want to name my child after them. My mother wouldn’t refer to my son by his name for about a month,” Weiland says. Weiland gave her mother time to come around to her son’s name and advises other parents to do the same.“This is your child. You are going through a lot of big changes and sleepless nights. No one has a right to demand a particular name and give you more stress,” she says. Politely ignore. What do you do about strangers who disparage your child’s name? Lisa Cash Hanson and her husband chose the name Matilda for their daughter because they felt it was unique. “It was something in my heart that she would be named Matilda and it stuck,” says Hanson, who is an author, business coach and founder of MompreneurMogul.com. She was surprised

when her daughter’s name didn’t ring well with others. Friends, family and even strangers, made faces and said, “that’s too old fashioned” or “she is going to get picked on in school” and worse, “that name is ugly.” “We’re seeing an epidemic of bad baby-name manners,”Wattenberg says. “As names become more diverse and creative, there’s simply less agreement on what makes a good name. If someone is flat-out rude, chilly politeness and a change of subject is the best move.” Hello...My name is____. Many parents say the best strategy they’ve found to manage feedback is to say nothing at all or plead indecision and announce the baby’s name after the birth. At that point, the focus will be on your adorable baby, and her name may seem less up for debate. Freelance writer Christa Melnyk Hines is the mom of two boys, with perfectly suited names. She is the author of Confidently Connected: A Mom’s Guide to a Satisfying Social Life.
