Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Thanksgiving is a time for the family! Nothing brings a family together more than sitting for a holiday dinner. The definition of family can vary greatly; I have friends that I consider to be family. It does not have to be biological. Love makes a family. November is National Adoption Awareness Month, and PB Parenting has spotlighted two families that have adopted children during the pandemic. Learn more about adoption and fostering starting on page 6; perhaps it is a journey you would like to take. Speaking of journey, the holidays sometimes means trips to see relatives. Holiday travel is tricky and even more so during the pandemic. Check out page 16 for tips for traveling with kids via car or plane. Safe travels! I simply can not believe the holiday shopping season is upon us! 2020 seems to be flying by fast. The holidays season will be different than years past. I always have been a big online shopper and will probably be even more this year to reduce my time in line and in the stores! What Does Adoption Mean to Some Families? BY MELANY TROLLER, M.ED.
Families come in all shapes and sizes. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to what a family is. November is National Adoption Awareness Month and when we think of families, we know that adoption plays a huge role in creating and completing families. This raises the question: what do we really know about adoption? It is shrouded in misconceptions and stigmas. We need to understand what adoption actually is by separating fact from fiction. Two families opened up about the process of adoption and the journey they went through, finalizing their adoptions during COVID-19. They shared a lot of realities about adoption that are not common knowledge. Too often we let pop culture dictate our understanding of

the world, and adoption is not immune to this. It is not a quick process, it is not an easy process, and it is not something anyone can do on a whim. Melissa and Aaron’s Story: Melissa and Aaron started the adoption process two years ago. They both agreed they were looking to adopt an older child, and siblings if possible. They went to the mandatory parenting class, had their background checks done, and underwent the laborious task of having a home study completed. Adoption takes a long time because each step is involved, and the adoption system is sorely understaffed. Their experience was a little under two years, which, in the adoption world, is pretty fast.

You have to put in the work to find the kids as caseworkers are overloaded. • It’s not a fast process. Who to ask about kids and the rhythm of asking without seeming overbearing is a delicate balance. • It can take years to be matched with kids. • Don’t be narrow in the definition of

what your family is going to look like you can love a kid no matter what - all families are different. Some misconceptions they want to dispel: • Adoption doesn’t make your family different - it makes you a family. • We didn’t just gain kids - we gained the families of their other siblings as well. • So many kids are looking for and deserve a forever home. There is a stigma on adoption that we need to get rid of. Maureen and David’s Story: Maureen and David never planned to adopt. They chose to go the foster route. Maureen’s advice for families choosing to foster is, “Don’t get into foster care because you want to adopt a child. The goal of foster care is reunification and the outcome isn’t always adoption.” Maureen stated, “We started the foster care process to give children a safe place to live while

The hardest learning points they shared about the process were: • Adoption isn’t always easy. The process for us was long and exhausting, especially with our child being in foster care prior. It’s not a quick process but it’s incredibly worth it. • The foster journey can be tough. Some misconceptions they want to dispel: • Adoption is a beautiful thing for all parties involved and is a wonderful option I wish people considered more often. Adoption is important because all children need love. • Not all couples are able to have biological children and not all couples are able to care for their biological children. Adoption is a

great way for these children to still be cared for and loved in a family that is able to care for them. As if traveling with kids isn’t hard enough - add in a global pandemic along with strict health and safety guidelines and it can feel almost impossible. If you choose to travel and have checked out all the facts such as positive cases in the area you are traveling to, travel restrictions, and local ordinances, to name a few, check out the following tips to help make holiday travel with kids a little less chaotic during COVID-19. General Travel Tips: Regardless of how you choose to travel, you should consider packing some health and safety essentials to keep you and your family safe. Make sure these items are easily accessible and consider keeping them in a carry-on or small bag that can be kept out of the trunk.

Hand sanitizer - If flying, consider taking an individual bottle per person (at least 60% alcohol) as per TSA bottle size regulations. Masks - Pack extra masks for any possibility - masks get wet, they can fit uncomfortably, they can break, the list goes on. Taking extra masks and having them readily accessible can help avoid wearing an uncomfortable alternative provided by any location you are at that requires masks. Band aids - Bringing your own band aids reduces the need to stop at a store or ask for one from wherever you might be, minimizing exposure to other travelers. Snacks - Surprisingly, many places might close early, be it at the airport
or on the road. Having snacks available can help in a pinch if you find yourself without other options. Over-the-counter Medicine - As a parent I have always traveled with children’s acetaminophen or ibuprofen. It is also a good idea to pack some over-the-counter allergy medication as different regions have different allergens, especially during fall and winter. Disinfecting wipes - Many brands offer travel packages or you can put some from a larger container in a plastic baggy. Disinfecting wipes allow you to control the cleanliness of what you come into contact with, including doors, toilets, and chairs on airplanes and at restaurants to name a few. Q & A: Rapid COVID Test Your Questions Answered Rapid COVID-19 Testing Q: What is the process for the rapid COVID-19 test? A: The sample is collected via nasal swab of both nostrils. The test takes approximately 15 minutes to process results. Q: Who is eligible for the test? A: The rapid COVID-19 test has been evaluated for use in patients within the first 5 days of symptoms of possible COVID-19. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and rash, including “COVID toes.” A runny or stuffy nose as an isolated symptom is not strongly suggestive of COVID-19. Q: Can I bring my child in specifically for a COVID-19 test? A: The rapid COVID-19 test will be given only upon medical evaluation by our providers to patients with suggestive COVID-19 symptoms within the past 5 days. The test has not been evaluated for use for asymptomatic patients or for those with symptoms that have lasted longer than 5 days. Q: Is there a minimum age? A: There is no minimum age for the rapid

A negative rapid COVID-19 test is not definitive, and must be followed with a PCR test to confirm a negative result. Patients with a negative rapid COVID-19 test must remain in quarantine until their follow-up PCR result is confirmed positive and they meet the CDC’s symptomatic criteria for clearance. We are not able to clear symptomatic patients over the phone when we call with the results of a negative PCR test.
