10 Steps to Organizing a Party!
Organized Party Planning (the other O.P.P.)
BY AMY BERGMAN
Whether planning your child's birthday, your sister's baby shower, your parents' surprise anniversary, or a simple farewell dinner for a co-worker, party planning does not have to be overwhelming. Below are 10 Steps to Organizing a Party that will help you look like the hostess (or host) with the "mostest"!
1. Decide on what kind of party you want to have. Take some time and think about who and what the party is for and also take a few minutes to try and visualize how it will look. This may help you determine the theme or color scheme for your party. If you’re hosting a party for someone then ensure that they’re also involved in all the decisions that they get the party that they want— unless of course it’s a surprise!
2. Decide on your budget. Some ways to save money are: ask others to bring food, hold the party in your home rather than paying for a
venue, borrow things from friends or find things online on free sites like Facebook Buy Nothing groups. For kids parties, think about sharing the cost of hiring someone by joining up with other children’s parents. That way your child will get a great party and all their friends will be there. This is specifically useful if they have friends with similar birthdates. Ask a friend (or a few) attending the party to be your photographer, tell them the critical pics you want them to capture and then request that they send you everything they have captured afterwards.
3. Select the venue or host it yourself. If you don't have a venue in mind, the internet is a great place to start. Ask friends for recommendations. Living in South Florida, remember to have an indoor “Plan B” if your party is planned for outdoors. The weather here, any time of year, can be unpredictable. Consider some of the following:
• How many people can the venue

accommodate?
Does the venue suit the style of your event?
• What services are provided for the rental you're paying?
• Is there a great view?
• Does the venue allow outside vendors?
• Is there a minimum spend per person requirement? (NB! This could blow your budget!)
• Is there enough parking space?
4. Choose time and date. Timing is crucial for any party. For a kid’s party, take in to consideration the ages of the children invited to the party and possible nap times, school release times for and other after-school activities. It is also helpful to not only announce a start time, but an end time as well, so that guests know when to expect the party to be over. This will also help them make arrangements for travel time and babysitters.
5. Make a list of guests. For most parties you can invite 20% more people than you can fit in the space since typically only 70 to 80% of invitees actually attend. If you are planning a child’s party, you may also want to consider any policies that the child school may have regarding policies and inviting other students.
6. Send out invitations. This may be paper invitations in the snail mail, email invitations and even phone invites. Some good online resources are: Paperless Post and Evite.
7. Make and confirm other arrangements. Asking for help or hiring someone to help is okay. This may include entertainment, photographer, caterers, decorations etc.
8. Make a list of supplies and go shopping (see budget above). Plan a day and time when you are going to get your party shopping done. Put it on your calendar and/ or your to-do list. Don’t put it off or leave it for
“when I have a free moment”. Keep receipts in a separate envelope for post-party returns.
9. Start early on setting up. This will reduce your own stress on the day of the party. Ask for help. If hosting at home, you can always set up the day or night before. Check the restrooms at the venue or in your home before guests show up and make sure they are clean and fully stocked. Don’t forget to strategically place enough trash cans around your party space (less cleanup for you later).
10. Enjoy your own party. Try and relax and enjoy the fruits of your labors. If guests ask if they can help out, let them! Have a few chores or things in mind for when someone asks if they can pitch in. Don’t forget to schedule time for post-party clean up and tasks like thank you notes and returns. Block off time/day after the party on your calendar to give yourself time to clean up, put all the party supplies and gifts away and to then reflect and relax---you deserve it!

DISCOVER STEAMPUNK
The inaugural Steampunk Adventurers
Weekend is launching in West Palm Beach on November 12 & 13. Sounds fun, but what is Steampunk?
Steampunk is a fun mixture of Victorian style, America's Wild West, and science fiction. Science fiction author K.W. Jeter created the term Steampunk in 1987 to describe a type of fantasy fiction inspired by the Victorian era and industrial technology powered by steam.
Steampunks are time travelers. They represent a subculture of adventurers celebrating an alternative reality filled with retro-futuristic inventions and styles.
Steampunk also refers to any art, culture, fashion, literature, or live entertainment that has developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction. Steampunk has made its way to mainstream culture too. You may recognize movies like Will Smith's Wild Wild West, Van Helsing starring Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr. in Guy Richie's Sherlock Holmes, or Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow with Angelina Jolie. All these films feature elements of Steampunk.
Plus, Steampunk bands like Abney Park are selling out venues, and Steampunk authors often grace the NYT

Adult adventurers can attend lectures, shop our exhibitors in Makers Way, visit our Authors Collective, and enjoy games like tea and parasol dueling. 5 healthy habits to help your student ace the fall semester
BY MOLLY HIETAPELTO YOUTH MARKET DIRECTOR, AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION PALM BEACH
Study habits, good notetaking and homework can all help your student do well in school. But did you know that physical health can help them succeed, too?
Being active and eating nutritious foods help people of all ages think, feel and sleep better. Here are some ways to help your student “ace”
their physical health so they can perform their best in school.
1. Get one hour of exercise a day! While children 3-to-5 years-old should also be physically active, kids ages six and up need at least 60 minutes a day of moderate physical activity. Some activity ideas include: playing an after-school sport, going for a family bike ride or brisk walk after dinner or playing in a pool.
2. Add more produce to meals and cut back on added sugar and salt. Include at least one fruit or vegetable in every meal and beware of sneaky snacks packed with salt and sugar! Try a few of these healthy snacks to mix it up: nuts and seeds, zucchini circles, whole grain toast with peanut butter, low-fat yogurt, fruit and veggies smoothies or homemade banana nut bread.

3. Eat dinner together. Sharing a meal as a family has emotional, mental and physical benefits for everyone at the table. It’s also a great

way for kids to see you make healthy dinner choices, and for you to cheer them on as they try new foods. Studies have shown that kids who eat meals with their families are more motivated at school, have fewer emotional difficulties and get along better with others.
4. Set a bedtime alarm. It’s easy to watch one more episode of a show or scroll through Instagram for 10 more minutes. But kids need sleep to enhance learning, memory and wellbeing. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 10 to 13 hours for 3- to 5-year-olds, 9 to 11 hours for 6- to 13- year-olds, and 8 to 10 hours for teenagers. Set a consistent bedtime alarm somewhere the whole family can hear it for a cue to wind down, brush and floss and get
to bed.
5. Get the whole family involved. Try replacing TV time with a family walk or game and remember that kids mimic what they see adults do. If they see you choosing healthy snacks, moving more and getting to bed early, they might just take your lead.
The American Heart Association is a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. Through the Kids Heart Challenge, we work with kids to help them start lifelong habits of healthy eating and exercise. In Palm Beach County, 115 schools have already registered for the Kids Heart Challenge –contact me at Molly.Hietapelto@Heart.org to get your student’s school involved!
From watching scary movies to dressing up as ghouls and goblins, spooky season means it’s time to pop up your loved ones’ favorite snacks for a ghostly good time. Before heading out to trick-or-treat, gather your minions in the kitchen for some family-friendly fun crafting these haunting yet tasty treats.
Throughout October, you can honor National Popcorn Poppin’ Month with eerie, delicious eats like Spooky Popcorn Spider Web, Green Halloween Zombies and Witchy Popcorn Balls that add festive fun to the Halloween excitement.
As a perfect ingredient in treats of all types, popcorn is beloved for its seed-to-snack sim plicity as a non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, sugarfree snack that’s naturally low in fat and calories.
Add in its irresistible smell, taste and versatility, and it’s easy to see why it pairs so well with spooky celebrations. Find more Halloween treats at popcorn.org.
