BY LOU ROMIG MD, FAAP, FACEP, MEDICAL DIRECTOR Summer’s coming to an end and it’s time to prepare to send our kids back to school. As you’re getting supplies and new school clothes, it’s also important to prepare your child to go back to school healthy and to stay healthy!

expend the energy they need for their activities in and out of school. Children who are sleep deprived may fall asleep in class, have trouble paying attention, make poor decisions about risky behaviors and be very moody.

According to the CDC, children get 8 to 12 colds or other viral illnesses each school year. To help keep your child(ren) healthy and avoid disruption in your routines Dr. Romig, Medical Director for After Hours Pediatrics Urgent Care, has 4 easy tips for a healthy start to the school year.

Toddlers and preschoolers need 10-12 hours of sleep every day, while school-aged kids need 10-11 hours and teens need 8-9 hours. Studies show that many children don’t get adequate sleep, especially during the school year. This issue has played a role in some school systems’ decisions to move school start times to later in the morning to allow kids to be better-rested.

1. Hand washing To help protect children from getting sick and subsequently bringing germs home, encourage your children to wash their hands frequently and give older children small bottles of hand sanitizer to use at school encourage frequent hand washing. Talk to your doctor about when it’s safe to keep your child home and observe them when they’re sick and when it’s wise to have your child evaluated urgently. 2. Adequate sleep Children need sleep to prepare their bodies to 8 August 2022| PB Parenting |

Over the last several weeks before school starts, gradually move children’s bed and wake-up times to match their school hours. Keeping late hours until the night before school starts will make it much harder for your child to adjust to the new schedule. Restrict your child from TV, computer and phone use for at least an hour, preferably two, before bedtime, as the light spectrum projected by these screens can make the brain more active and interfere with falling asleep. Try to reinforce

to children that all cell phone use must stop during water and/or electrolyte solutions to drink during rest hours. practice and games. 3. Nutrition & hydration Children also need adequate nutrition and hydration to power their bodies and brains. Whether it’s a sit-down meal or on-the-go, try to make sure your children have a nutritious breakfast that includes protein for extra energy that will keep them going until lunch. Teach children about the building blocks of a nutritious diet and give them guidance about choosing the proper foods for lunch at school if they don’t take a healthy lunch with them. Encourage your children to drink as much water as they can at school. 4. Sports safety If sports are on your child’s school agenda, talk to coaches about what precautions they take against the late summer and early fall Florida heat and assure that children will have free access to

Let your child know that if they get dizzy, have a headache, get very thirsty, are nauseated or have muscle cramps while exercising (in sports or PE), they should stop, tell the teacher or coach they’re not feeling well, get to a shaded area or into air conditioning, and drink fluids. If your child will be engaging in contact sports, assure that coaches and athletic trainers are educated about traumatic brain injury and concussions and that the team has a protocol for dealing with athletes with possible head injuries. Here’s wishing you and your family a healthy and happy school year! Lou Romig, MD, FAAP, FACEP is the Medical Director of After Hours Pediatrics. 5 Back to School Organizing Tips BY AMY BERGMAN

It is Back To School time! There is no reason to panic. While the thought of having to buy new clothes and school supplies can be daunting, having an organized plan will the be the key to making it fun and to your family's BTS success. I am here to help you with 5 Back to School Tips to get you and your family organized. Use the tips below that you feel will work for you and test them out. If they don’t work, try something else! 1. Carpool Calm Now is the time to clean out your car. Get it ready for back to school time with items you will need for carpooling to and from school and getting to afterschool activities. Stock some non-perishable snacks and waters in your car, along with plenty of wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues and napkins. Have a trash can in your car. Make sure that you have some extra pencils, pens markers as well for those last minute homework completions. Does your kid need to “zone out “or just relax before or after school?--make sure that his or her tablet handy along with some charging devices. Want to get pumped for the day together in the car?--be ready with some some family friendly music or even a fun podcast. 2. Coming & Going Made Easy! Where do you and your family enter and exit your home for school and afterschool activities? Create a Entry/Exit/Command Center/Calendar/ 12 August 2022| PB Parenting |

Drop zone in that space---even if your floor plan tells you differently. Use bins, baskets, and hooks so that each person has a designated place to throw their stuff when they come in from school in the afternoon. Put up the school calendar(s) in this space so that important dates are visible to everyone, everyday. You can even frame it to make it aesthetically pleasing and if you use a dry erase marker you can easily write and erase on it! Where age-appropriate, have a separate place for important papers and things that need to be unpacked each day from the backpacks. 3. Dressed for Success Get the kids closets together before school starts. Try grouping all like clothing together. For example, keep all T-shirts in one drawer and shorts and jeans and another, this will make picking out outfits a whole lot easier. Try file folding the kids clothes in their drawers so that they can clearly see everything that they have. Choosing outfits the night before each school day really illuminates more chaos in the mornings. Multiple wardrobe changes per day? Make sure dirty laundry hampers are accessible (consider ones without a lid) and in a convenient place. 4. Homework/Homeschool Set up a station where your kids can get their work done and be organized for back to school. This may be the same area as last year or maybe a new one

needs to be created. If there is not a permanent space, try creating a caddy or cart with all of the things that they need such as pencils and pens, erasers and pencil sharpener‘s, rulers and tape etc. to move with them from room to room. Giving each child his or her own space or caddy will really help them have what they need. Pro Tip: The Dollar Store is a great place to find inexpensive bright colored caddies this time of year. 5. The Munchies Depending on what your kids like to eat for lunch packing lunch and snacks, packing up the night before is always helpful even if you can just pack half the lunch or most of the lunch. This will definitely take some time off of your morning routines. Have your kids vote or weigh in on their top ten lunches for school so meal planning is easier. Create an accessible snack area in your kitchen or pantry where your kids can retrieve their own snacks each day.

Goodbye Summer! Back to School Transition Whether their summer was jam-packed with activities or filled with complaints about being bored with nothing to do, kids often have a tough time making the back-to-school transition.

moms and dads don't have that flexibility. Instead, try to arrange your evenings so you can give kids as much time as they need, especially during those first few days.

Battling the Butterflies As with any new or unsettling situation — like starting school for the first time or entering a new grade or new school — give kids time to adjust. Remind them that everyone feels a little nervous about the first day of school and that it will be an everyday routine in no time.

If your child is going to a new school, try to arrange a visit before school starts. And ask if your child can be paired up with another student, or "buddy," and if you can be connected with other new parents. This will help both of you with the adjustment to new people and surroundings. Some schools give kids maps to use until things become more familiar.

Focus on the positive things about going back to school, such as hanging out with old friends, meeting new classmates, buying cool school supplies, getting involved in sports and other activities, and showing off new clothes (or accessories if your child wears a uniform). It's also important to talk to kids about what worries them and offer support: Are they afraid they won't make new friends or get along with their teachers? Is the thought of schoolwork stressing them out? Are they worried about the bully from last year? Consider adjusting your own schedule to make the transition smoother. If possible, it's especially beneficial for parents to be home at the end of the school day for the first week. But many working 22 August 2022| PB Parenting |

To help ease back-to-school butterflies, try to ease kids into a consistent school-night routine a few weeks before school starts. Also make sure that they: • get enough sleep (set a reasonable bedtime so that they'll be rested and ready to learn in the morning) • eat a healthy breakfast (they're more alert and do better in school if they eat a good breakfast every day) • write down the need-to-know info to help them remember details such as their locker combination, what time classes and lunch start and end, their homeroom and classroom numbers, teachers' and bus drivers' names, etc. • use a wall calendar or personal planner to

record when assignments are due, tests will be given, extracurricular practices and rehearsals will be held, etc. • have them organize and set out what they need the night before (homework and books should be put in their backpacks by the door and clothes should be laid out in their bedrooms) • It's normal to be anxious in any new situation. But a few kids develop real physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomachaches, at the start of school. If you're concerned that your child's worries go beyond the normal back-to-school jitters, speak with your child's doctor, teacher, or school counselor. Back-to-School To-Do's Parents themselves can be a little nervous about the first day of school, especially if they're seeing their little one off for the first time or if their child is going to a new school. To help make going to school a little easier on everyone, here's a handy checklist:

What to wear, bring, and eat: • Does the school have a dress code? Are there certain things students can't wear? • Will kids need a change of clothes for PE or art class? • Do your kids have a safe backpack that's lightweight, with two wide, padded shoulder straps, a waist belt, a padded back, and multiple compartments? • Do kids know not to overload their backpacks and to stow them safely at home and school? • Will your kids buy lunch at school or bring it from home? If they buy a school lunch, how much will it cost per day or per week? Do you have a weekly or monthly menu of what will be served? Is there an account number that they need to remember? • Have you stocked up on all of the necessary school supplies? (Letting kids pick out a new lunchbox and a set of pens, pencils, binders, etc., helps get them geared up for going back to school.)

Medical issues: • Have your kids had all necessary immunizations? • Have you filled out any forms that the school has sent home, such as emergency contact and health information forms? • Do the school nurse and teachers know about any medical conditions your child has, such as food allergies, asthma, diabetes, or other conditions that may need to be managed during the school day? • Have you made arrangements with the school nurse to give any medicines your child might need? • Do the teachers know about any conditions that may affect how your child learns? For example, kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) should be seated in the front of the room, and a child with vision problems should sit near the board.

Transportation and safety: • Do you know what time school starts and how your kids will get there? • If they're riding the bus, do you know where the bus stop is and what time they'll be picked up and dropped off? • Do you know where the school's designated drop-off and pick-up area is? • Are there any regulations on bicycles or other vehicles, such as scooters? • Have you gone over traffic safety information, stressing the importance of crossing at the crosswalk (never between parked cars or in front of the school bus), waiting for the bus to stop before approaching it, and understanding traffic signals and signs? • If your child walks or bikes to school, have you mapped out a safe route? Does your child understand that it's never OK to accept rides, candy, or any other type of invitation from strangers?

What About After School? Figuring out where kids will go after school can be a challenge, especially if both parents work. Depending on a child's age and maturity, you may need to arrange for after-school transportation and care. It's important for younger kids and preteens to have some sort of supervision from a responsible adult. If you can't be there as soon as school's out, ask a reliable, responsible relative, friend, or neighbor to help out. If they're to be picked up after school, make sure your kids know where to meet you or another caregiver.

If your kids or teens are home alone in the afternoons, it's important to establish clear rules: • Set a time when they're expected to arrive home from school. • Have them check in with you or a neighbor as soon as they get home. • Specify who, if anyone at all, is allowed in your home when you're not there. • Make sure they know to never open the door for strangers. • Make sure they know what to do in an emergency. • To ensure that kids are safe and entertained after school, look into after-school programs. Some are run by private businesses, others are organized by the schools themselves, places of worship, police athletic leagues, YMCAs, community and youth centers, and parks and recreation departments.

Getting involved in after-school activities: • offers kids a productive alternative to watching TV or playing video games • provides some adult supervision when parents can't be around after school • helps develop kids' interests and talents • introduces kids to new people and helps them develop their social skills • gives kids a feeling of involvement • keeps kids out of trouble • Be sure to look into the child-staff ratio at any after-school program (in other words, make sure that there are enough adults per child) and that the facilities are safe, indoors and out. And kids should know when and who will pick them up when school lets out and when the after-school program ends. Also, make sure after-school commitments allow kids enough time to complete school assignments. Keep an eye on their schedules to make sure there's enough time for both schoolwork and home life.

Helping Homework Love it or hate it, homework is a very important part of school. To help kids get back into the scholastic swing of things: • Make sure there's a quiet place that's free of distractions to do homework. • Don't let kids watch TV when doing homework or studying. Set rules for when homework and studying need to be done, and when the TV can be turned on and should be turned off. The less TV, the better, especially on school nights. • If your kids are involved in social media, be sure to limit the time spent on these activities during homework time. • Keep text messaging to a minimum to avoid frequent interruptions. • Never do their homework or projects yourself. Instead, make it clear that you're always available to help or answer any questions, as needed. • Review homework assignments nightly, not necessarily to check up, but to make sure they

understand everything. Encourage kids to: • develop good work habits from the get-go, like taking notes, writing down assignments, and turning in homework on time • take their time with schoolwork • ask the teacher if they don't understand something • To ensure kids get the most out of school, maintain an open channel of communication with the teachers by e-mailing or talking with them throughout the school year to discuss your kids' academic strengths as well as weaknesses. Most of all, whether it's the first day of school or the last, make sure your kids know you're there to listen to their feelings and concerns, and that you don't expect perfection — only that they try their best. © 1995- 2022. Jump-Start Success at School with Wellness at Home

Setting the stage for success in the classroom starts with reliable morning routines the whole family can depend on. Establishing a plan for each day before heading off for work or school is beneficial for staying on time and organized, and many families’ mornings start with a nutritious breakfast.

This school year, add better-for-you breakfast recipes like Orange Oatmeal or an Orangeberry Smoothie to the menu. These morning meals are powered by 100% orange juice, a delicious option that helps fuel the body with essential nutrients that support a healthy immune system and overall diet quality with no added sugar. “A growing number of research studies has revealed children who regularly drink 100% orange juice have higher intakes of key nutrients, higher quality diets and may have 30 August 2022| PB Parenting |

healthier lifestyle habits, like greater physical activity levels, than children who do not drink OJ,” said Dr. Rosa Walsh, director of scientific research at the Florida Department of Citrus. “Study after study confirms that 100% orange juice not only has a place in the diets of children, but it can also serve as an easy way for parents to provide key nutrients without fear of adverse effects on body weight when served in moderation.” Consider these nutritional benefits of Florida Orange Juice, “The Original Wellness Drink.” Diet Quality Because 1 cup of 100% orange juice counts as 1 cup of fruit, it’s an easy way to contribute to your children’s fruit intake. As a kid-favorite, it’s a nutrient-dense beverage that helps increase the intake of key nutrients including vitamin C,

folate, thiamin, magnesium, potassium and, in fortified juices, vitamin D and calcium. Immune Support When paired with a healthy lifestyle, Florida Orange Juice has vitamin C, vitamin D (in fortified juices) and phytonutrients (naturally occurring plant compounds) and may help support a strong immune system. • Vitamin C – Commonly associated with helping maintain and strengthen a healthy immune system by protecting cells and promoting the production and function of cells. One 6-8-ounce glass of OJ is an excellent source. • Vitamin D – Plays an important role in regulating immune response and helps cells fight off bacteria and viruses that get into the body. One 6-8-ounce glass of fortified OJ is a good source. • Plant Compounds, Flavonoids and Colorful Carotenoids – Work to support the immune

system by helping to fight inflammation and helping cells communicate with each other, which can help strengthen immune response when encountering infection. No Added Sugar Unlike foods and beverages that contain added sugars, the natural sugar in 100% orange juice contains vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. As one of nature’s nutrient-rich foods, OJ is a convenient way to enhance whole fruit intake and reach daily recommendations. Plus, it can be used as a substitute for nutrient-poor foods and beverages, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, in the diets of children and adults.
