Letter From The Publisher

Mother's Day is just around the corner, on Sunday, May 10th, and we're taking a moment to honor all the amazing moms and mother figures out there. Whether you're a biological mom, stepmom, foster mom, grandma, or anyone who's ever stepped into that nurturing role, this day is for you.

This year, we're inspired by this beautiful quote from Jill Churchill: "There's no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a great one."

It's a reminder that motherhood isn't about getting it all right. It's about showing up, loving fiercely, and doing your best, even on the messy days.

On May 10th, may you get a moment to breathe, sip your coffee while it's still hot, or enjoy a peaceful mimosa brunch. And here's hoping for a temporary truce in the never-ending sibling squabbles! In this issue, starting on page 8, you'll find fresh ideas to help make Mother's Day extra special, from thoughtful gift guides to relaxing outings and pampering treats.

As the school year winds down (the last day is Friday, May 29th), we know many of you are already deep into summer planning mode. No stress, we've got your back! Head to www.pbparenting.com for our updated Summer Camp Directory, complete with the latest listings, interactive maps, and helpful filters to make finding the perfect program a breeze. From all of us at PB Parenting, we're sending love and appreciation to every mom reading this. May your Mother's Day be filled with the recognition, rest, and joy you absolutely deserve. Happy Parenting,

10 Ways to Celebrate Mom on Mother’s Day

According to the National Retail Federation, Mother's Day spending is expected to reach a record $38 billion this year, surpassing last year's $34.1 billion and exceeding the previous record of $35.7 billion set in 2023. As with previous years, 84% of U.S. adults plan to celebrate the holiday. On average, consumers plan to spend a record $284.25 on gifts, up from $259.04 last year. Of those celebrating, 54% plan to buy a gift for their mother or stepmother, followed by a wife (22%) or a daughter (13%). Flowers remain the most popular gift category, with 75% of shoppers planning to purchase floral arrangements, followed by greeting cards (74%) and special outings such as dinner or brunch (63%). Consumers are expected to spend $7.5 billion on jewelry, $6.4 billion on special outings, and $3.2 billion on flowers. Experiential gifts continue to gain traction, with a record onethird of consumers planning to give experiences such as concerts or sporting events. Consumers are also continuing to prioritize thoughtful gifts this holiday. Nearly half of

consumers say finding a gift that's unique or different is most important to them, followed by those who say finding a gift that creates a special memory matters most.

Below are some simple and thoughtful ways to celebrate Mom. Maybe you can subtly send this list out to someone... give them a little hint!

1. Give Mom a Break: Nothing says "I love you" like walking into the house and finding your partner has already cleaned it. I love when my son or daughter does chores without being asked. This Mother's Day, relieve mom of her usual to-do's by making it your responsibility. Are you too busy to do it yourself? Maybe hire a cleaning service to come in and do a deep clean or gift her a few cleanings for the next couple of months. Help Mom organize the clutter and pick up your toys! Maybe have the kids go through some items to donate. Less items, less to clean!

2. Let Mom Sleep: It doesn't matter if you have a newborn or a 10 year old, or if you are a stay at home mom or a working mom, I am guessing you are sleep deprived. Let mom sleep in, offer to take the children out so she can have a quiet house to rest in. While you are out, pick up some coffee or pastries and come home and surprise her. In the afternoon, let her take a nap. Is the baby still getting up in the middle of the night? Instead of her getting up, give her a break and do the nighttime routine.

3. Brunchin’ it: How many times does Mom make pancakes and eggs for everyone? Now it is your turn! Make her favorite items for breakfast. Surprise her with coffee or tea in bed. If cooking isn't in your skill set, take her somewhere nice to enjoy their cooking or let her have some alone time brunching with her friends. Bonus points if bottomless mimosas are included.

4. Pamper Mom: Moms take care of everyone else's needs but what about hers? Pampering can fit many gift-giving budgets, from a full day at the spa to something as simple as a manicure at her favorite nail salon. You can even pamper her at home with a nice foot rub or run her a bath, light some aromatherapy candles and give her some undisturbed time in the tub. I assure you any thoughtful gesture of some much needed pampering won't go unnoticed.

5. A Day Together: Set aside all other plans, grab the whole family and head to Mom's favorite park or the beach. Spending the time together (preferably outdoors) is what really counts, so have a picnic, go for a bike ride, take a hike. Enjoy the outdoors together as a family. If mom isn't the outdoorsy type, take her to the movies or a museum. Just spend the day with her doing something she WANTS to do.

6. Keep the Peace: If you have more than one child you know about the "sibling squabbles" and how mom is often a referee in her own home. Talk to

your children about a "peace treaty" for the day to give mom a break from the constant back and forth bickering.

7. Plant some flowers. Instead of buying flowers that will die in a week, use some extra space in the yard to plant a flower garden for mom. Maybe even look at plants that attract butterflies and make a butterfly garden. An extra bonus present would be to have the kids paint and decorate some rocks (don't forget to seal them). There are also plaster kits the kids can use to make "stepping stones" with their feet or hand prints that would make some memorable garden keepsakes.

8. Take Mom to the Theatre! There are some great shows coming in May and June Check out the Kravis Center and Maltz Jupiter Theatre schedules for a show mom will love!

9. Put Mom Back in the picture and schedule a Family Portrait session! Mom takes a lot of photos of the kids but where is she? Make her feel glamorous and schedule a family photo session. Check out Lynn Studios, Inc www.lynnstudios1. com. When the photo session is finished make sure to frame them nicely or have canvases made to display in your home.

10. Create a piece of treasured art or a craft. If you’re not super creative, the experts can help! Head over to Picasso’s Creative Workshop in Lake Worth and give mom a handmade painted pottery piece (They even have funtional pottery pieces such as cute candle votive holders, jewelry holders and more) or sign the kids up for a fun art class at artNEST in Delray Beach and Boca Raton where they can create mom something special that she can treasure for many years. If mom is a creative herself sign her up for classes and workshops at the Armory Arts Center.

No matter how you celebrate your Mother’s Day, PB Parenting wishes the best to all the moms out there! We hope you have a relaxing day filled with love and surrounded by your loved ones!

End-of-year parenting tips to help you stay calm, connected, and maybe even have a little fun

The month of May comes with a unique blend of excitement and exhaustion. It's the final sprint of the school year, and for many families in Palm Beach County, it's packed with class parties, recitals, sports banquets, field trips, and the ever-growing pile of artwork and papers making their way home. And while visions of summer beach days may be dancing in your head, the reality of juggling it all can feel a bit overwhelming. Here are some sanity-saving tips to help you navigate the chaos and finish the school year strong, without losing your cool (or your car keys).

1. Calendar Clarity: Avoid the Surprise Spirit Day

May is notorious for being the "everything month." One child has a "Wacky Hat Wednesday," another needs snacks for a field trip, and

someone's class is hosting an ice cream social… at 10:30 a.m. Take 15 minutes to sit down with your school emails, group texts, and classroom apps and consolidate everything into one central calendar, digital or paper, whatever works. Then, add 15 to 30 minutes of buffer time before each major event. It's not just about showing up. It's about not showing up flustered.

Pro Tip: Hang a big family calendar somewhere visible (fridge, mudroom, kitchen wall). Color code for each child and check it every night so you know what's coming.

2. The Great Summer Shift: Start the Conversation Now

The end of the school year is emotional, especially for younger kids who don't always have the words to express it. Teachers they love, classmates they may not see again, or even changing schools can cause anxiety masked as misbehavior. Gently introduce the idea of summer routines: Will there be camp? Check

out page 14 for Summer Camp Ideas. Will they get screen time after breakfast? Let them help create a summer wish list or daily rhythm to look forward to.

Try this: Make a "Summer Bucket List" poster together. Include big things like a zoo trip and little things like a popsicle picnic in the yard.

3. Celebrate the Teachers (Because They're Surviving May, Too!)

From tie-dye disasters to end-of-year testing and restless students, teachers are also riding the May mayhem wave. A heartfelt thank-you card, a hand-drawn picture, or even a simple email of appreciation goes a long way. If your class is organizing a group gift, consider pitching in, or offer something practical like a gift card to a local coffee shop or bookstore. Local Idea: Pick up a treat from a local favorite like Johan's Joe, Subculture Coffee, or Aioli for

a meaningful, delicious gift.

4. Capture the Memories (Before You Recycle the Backpack Papers)

There's something sweet about the "lasts" of the school year: the last morning drop-off, the last packed lunch, the last scribbled worksheet. Take a minute to snap a photo or write a short note about what your child learned this year, what they're proud of, and what you want to remember.

Bonus Idea: Create an end-of-year interview with your child. Ask about their favorite book, subject, lunch, friend, and more. Save it year over year for a keepsake you'll both treasure.

5. Find Joy in the Simple Stuff

Between the scheduled chaos, leave space for small family rituals. A backyard dinner under string lights. A spontaneous visit to the beach. A board game after dinner. These everyday

moments, when you're not rushing, just being, help anchor kids during transitions. Inspiration Stop: Check out one of our gorgeous local parks for a quick reset in nature.

6. Lower the Bar, Raise the Connection

Spoiler alert: You don't have to do everything. You can skip the elaborate Pinterest-worthy end-of-year gift and still be a great parent. What matters most is showing up with love, patience, and a willingness to laugh when the schedule inevitably goes sideways. Kids don't need perfection. They need you, present, supportive, and maybe a little silly.

7. Prep Now, Thank Yourself Later

The lazy days of summer may be calling, but don't forget: August will be here fast. Use May to quietly prep for what's ahead. Stock up on essentials when they go on sale: lunchboxes, sunscreen, bathing suits, pool toys. Sort through school supplies and donate what's still usable

Tues - Fri: 12pm-4pm Sat: 10am-4pm Sun: 12pm-4pm

to places like Resource Depot. Take advantage of early camp registration discounts or start researching fun, affordable staycation activities.

Quick Win: Create a summer folder (digital or paper) with camp schedules, registration confirmations, vacation plans, and any paperwork you'll need to keep handy.

May is messy, magical, and full of meaning, so take a breath and soak up the final stretch before summer begins. forward to. Try this: Make a “Summer Bucket List” poster together. Include big things like a zoo trip and little things like a popsicle picnic in the yard.

10 Sweet Goodbyes to the School Year

Saying farewell to the school year can be emotional, for kids and parents alike. These moments sneak up on you…

1. That final walk to the classroom or bus stop.

2. The last "Have a good day!" as they run off to join friends.

3. Handing over the teacher gift with a heartfelt thank-you.

4. Seeing your child's growth in their class photo vs. now.

5. One more spelling test or math packet.

6. Taking down the art wall or emptying the backpack bin.

7. Watching your child sign yearbooks with inside jokes you don't understand.

8. Hearing them say, "I'm really going to miss my teacher."

9. Packing the lunchbox one last time, maybe with a little note.

10. Realizing just how fast it all flew by.

ATTENTION SUMMER CAMP DIRECTORS!

If you live in Florida, you already know the sun here is a different animal. It doesn't wait for summer. It shows up in February when your kids are at a birthday party and in October during fall soccer season. It burns fast, it's relentless, and most parents don't realize how quickly things can go sideways when little ones are outside.

We see the results at After Hours Pediatrics

Urgent Care all the time. Sunburns, heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat rash. These are real things that happen to real kids on regular days, and a lot of them are preventable with a little preparation.

Start With Sunscreen (And Actually Use It)

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends SPF 30 or higher for children, and broad-spectrum means it covers both UVA and UVB rays. But here's where most families go wrong: they apply it once and move on. Sunscreen needs to go on about 15 to 30 minutes before going outside, and it needs to

be reapplied every two hours. If your kids are in the water or sweating, reapply sooner. For babies under six months, keep them out of direct sun and use shade, hats, and lightweight clothing as the first line of defense.

Pro tip: Keep a bottle in the car, one in the swim bag, and one by the back door. If it's hard to forget, you're less likely to skip it.

Heat and Kids Are a Risky Combination

Kids overheat faster than adults. Their bodies are still learning to regulate temperature, which makes them more vulnerable to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially during Florida summers when the heat index can push well past 100 degrees.

Signs of heat exhaustion to watch for:

• Heavy sweating with cool, pale, or clammy skin

• Nausea or vomiting

• Dizziness, weakness, or headache

• Fast but weak pulse

• Muscle cramps

If you see these signs, get your child out of the heat, into air conditioning if possible, and offer cool water or a sports drink. If symptoms don't improve quickly or your child seems confused, stops sweating, or has a very high temperature, that's a medical emergency.

Hydration Is Not Optional

Kids do not always ask for water when they need it, especially when they are in the middle of playing. By the time a child says they're thirsty, they're already behind on fluids. Build hydration breaks into outdoor time, especially during sports practices, beach days, and backyard play.

Water is always the right answer. For longer stretches of activity in the heat, a sports drink with electrolytes can help replace what kids lose through sweat. Skip the sugary sodas and juices, which can make dehydration worse.

Don't Forget the Eyes and Head

A wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses are not just cute accessories. They protect your child's eyes from UV damage and help keep the head and neck cooler. Peak sun hours in Florida typically run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so try to limit direct exposure during that window when you can.

When to Come See Us

Even the most prepared parents deal with sunburns, heat rash, and the occasional case of heat exhaustion. If your child has blistering or severe sunburn, signs of heat stroke, persistent vomiting, extreme fatigue, or anything that just doesn't look right, come in. You don't need an appointment.

After Hours Pediatrics Urgent Care is open afternoons, evenings, weekends, and most holidays across 13 Florida locations. We're here for the moments when your pediatrician's office is closed and waiting until morning is not the right call.

Pre-register online for a quicker check-in, or just walk in. We've got you.

Every year, Mother’s Day rolls around with the best intentions. Breakfast in bed, handmade cards, maybe a little extra help for the day. And while those gestures are meaningful, most moms don’t need one perfect Sunday. They need sustainable support on a random Tuesday in June.

Because the real challenge isn’t appreciation. It’s the invisible workload that quietly builds up behind the scenes of family life: keeping track of who needs what, when things run out, what needs to be cleaned, packed, rotated, or replaced. And when that mental load goes unmanaged, it often shows up as something tangible like clutter, disorganization, and a home that feels harder to run than it should.

If we are being honest, telling moms to “just ask for help” hasn’t solved the problem. Most of the time, the issue isn’t a lack of willingness from other family members. It is a lack of clarity.

So instead of adding more effort to your plate, what if this Mother’s Day became a turning point for making the invisible more visible?

Here are a few simple, realistic ways to start shifting the load at home:

1. Make the system obvious. If someone has to ask where things go, the system is not clear enough yet. Labels are not just for kids; they are for everyone. Think snacks, school supplies, sunscreen, sports gear. When there is a clear home for things, you remove the need for one person to constantly direct traffic.

I saw this shift clearly with a client who had a child with special needs and delayed reading skills. The traditional labeling approach was not accessible for him, so we changed the system. Instead of words, we used simple photo labels on toy bins showing exactly what belonged inside. At first, it was a small adjustment. But within weeks, something meaningful happened. He was no longer standing on the sidelines during clean up. He could see where things went, match the images, and participate alongside his family.

2. Lower the barrier to participation

A common mistake is building systems that only work if one person maintains them. If it is too complicated, too precise, or too fragile, it will quietly fall apart. Open bins instead of lids. Broad categories instead of overly specific ones. The goal is consistency, not perfection.

3. Assign ownership, not just tasks

There is a difference between helping and owning. When someone helps, you are still managing the process. Ownership means that person is responsible from start to finish. For younger kids, that might be managing their backpack or putting away laundry. For older kids or partners, it could be lunch prep, sports gear, or a weekly reset of a shared space.

4. Use visual cues instead of verbal reminders

If you find yourself repeating the same instructions, that is usually a sign the system relies too heavily on memory. Try visual triggers instead. A basket by the door for library books. A checklist for morning routines. A designated drop zone for camp items.

5. Build in a weekly reset and do it together

Choose a consistent time each week, maybe Sunday afternoon or Friday before dinner, and make it a short, shared reset. Everyone participates. It is not about deep cleaning. It is about restoring order so the week ahead feels manageable. Even 15 to 20 minutes can make a noticeable difference when it becomes a shared responsibility.

Here is the part that is easy to overlook. None of this works if one person keeps stepping in to fix, redo, or quietly take over when things are not done “right.” Every time we do that, we unintentionally reinforce the idea that the system only works because of us.

Let it be imperfect. Let others do things differently. The goal is not a perfectly organized home. It is a home that does not depend on one person to keep it functioning.

So, this Mother’s Day, instead of asking what would feel nice for a day, consider what would feel different over the next few months. A home where responsibility is shared is not just more organized. It is more sustainable. And that is a gift that lasts far longer than flowers. XOXO, Amy

Children will craft an "under the sea" diorama using modeling clay. Steven has been a teaching artist for more than 20 years through the Center for Creative Education.

The Schoolhouse Children’s Museum, located at 129 E. Ocean Avenue in Boynton Beach, features two floors of interactive exhibits that offer young children hours of exploration, education, fun and play.

Housed in a historic building originally constructed in 1913 as one of Boynton Beach’s first schools, the museum opened in 2001 and continues to serve as a hub for family learning and fun. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
