As summer winds down, the shift back to school can bring a mix of emotions—anticipation, nervous energy, and excitement for a new year ahead. Whether your child is heading back to a familiar school or starting somewhere new, preparation is key to making the transition as smooth as possible.
Here are 15 practical and encouraging tips to help your child feel confident and ready for the school year ahead.
Begin adjusting bedtimes and wake-up times a few days before school starts. This helps reset internal clocks so mornings aren’t quite so rushed or groggy.
Get ahead of the chaos by organizing school supplies in advance. Flip to page 11 for our
updated back-to-school checklist, and be sure to review your school’s specific requirements.
Spend a little time reviewing last year’s material and previewing what’s to come. It can give your child a head start and reduce first-day jitters.
Ask your child how they’re feeling about going back to school. Whether they’re excited, nervous, or a bit of both, just talking it out can ease anxiety.
If your child is starting at a new school or changing grades, attend open houses or orientation events. Walking the halls and meeting teachers can help them feel more at ease.

Encourage your child to think about what they’d like to accomplish this year—whether it’s improving a grade, making a new friend, or joining a club.
7. Focus on the Positives
Frame the school year as a fresh start full of opportunities. A positive mindset can set the tone for success, especially during those first few weeks.
8. Reconnect with Friends
Help your child reach out to classmates before school starts. A quick playdate or group chat can reignite friendships and ease social anxiety.
9. Practice Time Management
Teach your child to use a planner, calendar, or simple to-do list to track assignments, practices, and projects. These skills will serve them well all year long.
A well-rested, well-fed child is more focused and ready to learn. Re-establish routines around sleep, nutrition, and screen time before the first bell rings.
11. Build Relationships with Teachers
Encourage your child to ask questions and introduce themselves to their teachers. Strong teacher-student connections can help them feel supported and seen.
12. Celebrate Individuality
Remind your child to be themselves. They don’t have to blend in to belong—being authentic is something to be proud of.
13. Help Manage Stress
Support your child in finding healthy outlets for stress, like reading, art, outdoor play, or just quiet downtime. Let them know it’s okay to feel overwhelmed sometimes.

Ease back on screen time and reintroduce reading, puzzles, or other offline activities. This will help kids re-engage with learning and reduce digital distractions.
School isn’t just about academics. Encourage your child to participate in extracurriculars and discover what excites them. Learning should feel meaningful—and yes, even fun.
The start of the school year can feel like a big leap—but with a little planning, patience, and encouragement, your child can make a confident return to the classroom. Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
Wishing all students and families a great school year from PB Parenting.

Between the early alarms, morning routines, and the dash out the door, packing school lunch can feel like one more thing on an already full plate. But with a little planning and creativity, lunchtime can become something your child looks forward to each day. Whether you’re dealing with picky eaters, limited time, or simply looking to mix things up, these easy, no-heat lunch ideas are perfect for busy families.
To keep it simple and nutritious, aim for this combo:
• Protein: turkey or chicken roll-ups, hummus, hard-boiled egg, cheese cubes
• Veggies or Fruit: carrot or bell pepper sticks, snap peas, grapes, berries, melon
• Whole Grain or Whole Carb: wrap, wholewheat pita, whole-grain crackers, pasta salad
• Fun Treat or Healthy Snack: energy bites, mini muffin, dark chocolate chips, yogurt This follows the USDA’s MyPlate concept—half fruit/veg, whole grains, lean protein, and dairy or snack—as a guide for balanced meals.
1. Turkey or Ham Roll-Ups: Slice tortilla wraps with cheese, turkey, and spinach. Roll tight and slice into bite-sized pinwheels for fun, no-mess eating.
2. Rainbow Veggie Wrap: Spread hummus or herbed yogurt on a whole-wheat wrap and layer peppers, cucumber, shredded carrots, and cheese. Roll, slice, and serve with fruit wedges.
3. DIY Taco Lunchbox: Pack tortilla chips or soft taco shells with sides of black bean salsa, shredded chicken or turkey, cheese cubes, and cherry tomatoes—let kids
their own lunch.
4. Pasta or Grain Salad: Toss cooked mini pasta or farro with olive oil, lime or lemon juice, black beans, corn, cherry tomatoes, and diced bell peppers. Serve cold with crackers or cheese.
5. Meat & Cheese Snack Skewers: Alternate turkey or ham cubes with cheese, grape tomatoes, and veggie pieces on a skewer. Pair with fruit and a few whole-grain crackers.

enthusiasm and increases the chances they’ll finish lunch.
• Use Bento-Style Containers: These help with portion control and keep foods separate for picky eaters.
• Prep Ahead: Batch-cook proteins or assemble components on weekends to make school mornings faster and smoother.
Diet? No Problem. Lunchbox Ideas for Gluten-Free and Allergy-Friendly Needs
Whether your child is gluten-free due to Celiac disease, has a nut allergy, or you’re just trying to avoid certain ingredients, packing safe and satisfying lunches doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are some allergy-aware swaps and gluten-free favorites that are just as fun and filling.
1. Turkey & Cheese Roll-Ups: Skip the tortilla and roll turkey and cheese together—dip in mustard or hummus.
2. Mini Quinoa or Rice Cakes: Top with seed butter and banana slices or avocado mash and cherry tomatoes.
3. Gluten-Free Pasta Salad: Use chickpea,
lentil, or rice-based pasta tossed with olive oil, veggies, and a protein like grilled chicken or black beans.
4. Hard-Boiled Eggs + Veggie Chips: Pair eggs with crunchy, gluten-free veggie chips or rice crackers and fruit.
5. Yogurt Parfait with Gluten-Free Granola: Layer Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, and allergyfriendly granola (check labels for oats processed in GF facilities).
1. SunButter & Jelly Sandwich: Use sunflower seed butter and gluten-free bread for a nutfree twist on a classic.
2. Hummus + Veggie Dippers: Carrot sticks, sugar snap peas, and cucumber slices with a small container of hummus or guacamole.
3. Dairy-Free Cheese Quesadilla: Use gluten-free tortillas and dairy-free cheese alternatives like almond- or coconut-based slices.
4. Chia Pudding Cup: Made with oat milk or coconut milk - chia pudding is a fun, healthy treat topped with fruit or coconut flakes.
Always double-check packaged snacks, even seemingly “safe” items like crackers, granola bars, and deli meats—for hidden gluten, dairy, or nuts. Look for certified allergy-friendly or school-safe labels when possible.
A little prep goes a long way in creating satisfying, balanced lunches your kids will actually want to eat. With a mix of proteins, fruits, whole grains, and a touch of fun, these ideas help fuel learning and play all day long, without the need to reheat anything. Keep it cool, colorful, and customizable, and you’ll be winning the lunchbox game all year long.
Having a stash of ready-to-pack snacks can make all the difference during the school year. These grab-and-go ideas are ideal for lunchboxes, afterschool fuel, or between activities.
Fruits & Veggies
• Clementines – pre-peeled for convenience
• Apple slices – use lemon juice to keep from browning
• Grapes or blueberries – wash and portion ahead in snack containers
• Mini cucumbers or baby carrots – crisp, hydrating, and great with dips
Dairy & Protein Picks
• String cheese or cheese cubes
• Hard-boiled eggs – peeled for easy eating
• Greek yogurt tubes or cups – freeze overnight to keep cold until lunchtime
• Hummus cups – pair with pretzels or veggie sticks for a full snack
Crunchy & Fun
• Gluten-free pretzels or rice crackers – allergyfriendly and kid-approved
• Popcorn – pre-portioned in snack bags
• Mini muffins – bake in batches; banana, blueberry, or zucchini are great choices
• Applesauce or fruit pouches – go for no added sugar and keep a few extras on hand
• Homemade energy bites – oats, seed butter, honey, and add-ins like cranberries or mini chocolate chips
Tip: Keep a dedicated snack drawer or bin in the fridge and pantry so kids can help pack their own lunch or grab a quick bite after school.

BY AMY BERGMAN
It’s back to school time again. Before new routines and busy mornings take over, it pays to get back to basics at home. From drop zones to homework nooks to streamlined closets, a little planning now can make the school year run far more smoothly. Here are some simple ABCs to get started.
Too often we set up systems for our kids without their input, then wonder why nothing sticks. The more you involve them in planning their spaces, the more likely they’ll keep things in order. Have a quick chat about what they need: “Where would you like to keep your backpack so it’s easy to grab in the morning?” or “Would you rather do homework at the kitchen table or in your room?” Let them help set up snack bins, reading corners, or choose baskets for their supplies. When kids have a say, they’re more invested and more likely to follow through.
Not everyone has a dedicated mudroom or extra bedroom to turn into a study. That’s okay. Look around your home with fresh eyes. Where does your family naturally drop their things now? If shoes pile
up by the front door, stop fighting it and place a shoe rack or a small bench with baskets there. Install a few sturdy hooks for backpacks and lunchboxes right where they’re needed most.
If your dining room isn’t used daily, let it moonlight as a homework zone during the school year. A sideboard can hold school supplies just as well as china. Barely touch the living room? Set up a cozy family reading nook with a basket of books and a couple of floor pillows. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just functional.
And if you need to keep an eye on the kids while they’re tackling homework, think about designating a few drawers in a nearby breakfast room or kitchen nook for school supplies. That way, they can work within sight while you prep dinner, and everything they need is right at hand.
Clutter returns quickly if systems are too complicated. Keep it simple. Use clear bins so kids can see what’s inside without rummaging. Label everything, even if it’s just painter’s tape and
a Sharpie. This makes clean-up faster and helps everyone know where things belong.
When it comes to closets, pull out seasonal clothes your kids won’t wear right now. Store keepsakes and off-season items elsewhere so mornings are easier. If you can, post a simple morning and evening routine chart on the fridge or bedroom door. Visual reminders take the nagging out of daily tasks.
Also try installing a quick Sunday evening “reset” routine for the whole family. Spend just 15 minutes tidying backpacks, laying out outfits, and refilling snack bins. It’s a small effort that pays off with smoother, less stressful Monday mornings for everyone.
By following these ABCs, you’ll set up systems that save time and sanity all year long. Start small and tackle one space this week, then another. The goal
isn’t perfection; it’s making daily life just a little easier. Need more back-to-school ideas, including how to organize your car for drop-offs and after-school chaos?
