Letter From The Publisher

Dear Readers, Welcome to February! After what always feels like the longest month of the year, we’re stepping into a busy and celebratory season in our household. My oldest celebrates a birthday this month, and we’ll soon be preparing for my

youngest’s big day as well. Back-to-back birthdays are joyful, memorable, and sometimes a little overwhelming for both schedules and budgets.

To help make party planning easier, we’re excited to share our 15th Annual Party Planning Guide, filled with local resources to help you throw a celebration your family will love without the stress. You can dive into the guide starting on page 14. And on page 20, professional organizer Amy Bergman shares smart tips in her article, “Celebrate Big, Store Small: Creating a One-Bin Party Kit for Every Occasion,” showing how a little planning can make future celebrations simpler and more sustainable.

February also brings an important health reminder for families. This month, we’re sharing guidance from After Hours Pediatrics on navigating what many are calling a “super flu” season, with practical tips to help families stay healthy and prepared as illness continues to circulate in our communities (page 12).

Believe it or not, we’re already talking about spring and summer plans, too. Inside this issue, you’ll also find Spring Break Camp listings (page 18) to help families plan ahead while school is out. Next month we’ll launch our updated Summer Camp Directory, and since many camps fill quickly, early planning helps ensure your child gets a spot in the programs they love. Time seems to speed up after February, and summer will be here before we know it.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Your Favorite Little Valentines

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about romantic love. For families, it’s also a perfect opportunity to celebrate the sweetest Valentines of all — your kids. Between school exchanges, busy schedules, and everyday responsibilities, it’s easy for the holiday to slip by without much fanfare at home. But with a little creativity, Valentine’s Day can become a fun family tradition centered on connection, kindness, and making memories together.

Whether your children are toddlers or tweens, the key is creating simple moments that help them feel seen, appreciated, and loved. Here are some easy and memorable ways to celebrate together.

1. Host a Petite Picnic Party

Turn the classic tea party into a Valentine picnic. Lay out a blanket in the living room or head outdoors if the weather cooperates. Use festive plates, heart-shaped snacks, and maybe a few dress-up accessories or silly hats. Even a simple lunch feels magical when it’s served

picnic-style. Bonus points if everyone helps prepare the snacks.

2. Cover Their Door in Love Notes

In the days leading up to Valentine’s Day, surprise your child by posting heart-shaped notes on their bedroom door each morning. Share what you love or appreciate about them:

“You are a great big sister.”

“You make our family laugh.”

“You try so hard at school.”

These notes build confidence and create a sweet morning surprise they’ll look forward to all week.

3. Read Valentine-Themed Books Together

Snuggle up and share stories celebrating love and friendship. Classics like Guess How Much I Love You, Llama Llama I Love You, Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day Is Cool, and My Fuzzy Valentine make perfect bedtime reads. Even older kids enjoy revisiting favorite childhood books together.

4. Enjoy a Mini Spa Day at Home

Turn the afternoon into a fun pampering session with kid-friendly face masks, nail polish, or silly hairstyles. Let kids paint nails with heart designs or try temporary tattoos. Add cucumber slices and relaxing music for laughs and photos. It’s less about perfection and more about bonding and fun.

5. Have a Family Photo Session

Create your own Valentine photo shoot at home using balloons, handmade signs, or festive backdrops. Matching pajamas or coordinated outfits make photos extra cute. You can even create a DIY photo booth with props and let kids take turns being the photographer. These photos often become favorites long after the holiday passes.

6.

Spread Kindness Together

Valentine’s Day also overlaps with Random Acts of Kindness Week, making it the perfect time to give back. Help kids create cards or small treat bags for neighbors, teachers, grandparents, or

local first responders. Delivering small surprises teaches children that kindness is one of the best ways to celebrate love.

7. Make Gift Certificates for Each Other

Have family members create homemade coupons or gift certificates. Kids love giving and redeeming these throughout the year. Ideas include:

• Pick the movie for family night

• Choose dinner one evening

• Extra bedtime story

• Help with chores

• Breakfast in bed

The fun continues long after February 14.

8. Stay Heart Healthy as a Family

February is also American Heart Month, so why not celebrate with movement? Plan a family walk, bike ride, or backyard game. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, hold a livingroom dance party. It’s a great way to burn off Valentine candy energy while spending quality time together.

9. End the Day with a Special Family Dinner

Wrap up the day with a festive meal, whether homemade or takeout. Decorate the table with candles or paper hearts, and let everyone share something they love about each other. Dress up just for fun or create a menu of family favorites. The goal is simply to slow down and enjoy being together.

And remember, if parents have plans for a date night, many of these activities can happen anytime during the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.

The best part of the holiday isn’t the candy or gifts — it’s taking time to celebrate love in all its forms, especially within your own home.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

You may be hearing the phrase "super flu" this year. It’s a media nickname, not a medical diagnosis. What it usually means is that the flu is spreading widely and making a lot of kids (and parents) pretty miserable. The CDC has described the current 2025–2026 flu season as moderately severe, and national reporting notes Influenza A (H3N2) as a main driver. The good news: so far, it still appears to be “regular flu” for most kids, even if the community spread feels intense.

Symptoms to watch for Flu in kids often comes on fast. Common symptoms include:

• Fever (sometimes high) and chills

• Cough and sore throat

• Runny or stuffy nose

• Headache and body aches

• Tiredness that can feel extreme

• Sometimes vomiting or diarrhea

How long does the flu last?

Most kids start to turn the corner in 3–7 days, but it’s normal for a cough and low energy to linger longer. Every child is different, and kids with asthma or other chronic conditions

2026 “Super Flu” in Kids: What Florida Families Should Know

can take longer to bounce back. If your child improves and then suddenly gets worse again, it’s a good reason to get checked.

What helps at home

• Fluids, rest, and keeping fever discomfort under control with age-appropriate medicine (follow label directions)

• Keep sick kids home and away from high-risk relatives when possible

• Watch hydration: wet diapers/urination, tears, and ability to drink

For some children, antiviral medicine may help. It works best when started within 48 hours. Because it requires a prescription, it’s worth getting checked early if symptoms are ramping up, or your child is high risk.

Florida notes

In Florida, flu season can feel long. The Florida Department of Health notes that while the “season” has an end date, surveillance runs year-round, and timing can vary. Travel, big indoor events, school spread, and lots of air conditioning can keep viruses moving even when it’s warm outside.

When to get checked

Consider being seen today if your child has:

• Fever that’s not improving after 3 days, or fever that returns after improving

• Worsening cough, wheezing, or asthma flare-ups

• Ear pain, significant sore throat, or trouble keeping fluids down

• You’re worried they may be getting dehydrated, even if they’re still alert

Go to the ER if your child has severe trouble breathing, is hard to wake, or looks seriously ill.

AHP is here for Florida families. We’re open 7 days a week, including evenings and weekends. If you think your child may have the flu, pre-register online for faster check-in and we’ll take it from there.

In my work as a professional organizer, I regularly walk into homes where closets, under the beds, and shelves are filled with half-used packs of themed napkins, mismatched banners, leftover goody-bag toys, and bins labeled “Birthday Stuff” that no one has opened in years. It’s not because parents are careless. It’s because celebrations are emotional. We want our kids to feel loved, seen, and celebrated, so we buy “just in case,” we grab what’s cute and possibly on sale, and we deal with the clutter later. Except later keeps getting pushed down the road.

As both a professional organizer and a mom who happily went all out for birthdays, Valentine’s Day, and every school milestone, I see how quickly party supplies can turn into a silent form of clutter and wasted money. Not because the moments weren’t meaningful, but because the systems weren’t.

Here’s the reframe I share with families: our children remember the feeling of being celebrated far more than the exact plates, banners, or color scheme. The goal isn’t fewer celebrations. It’s less accumulation.

That’s where the idea of a “One-Bin Party Kit” comes in. Instead of buying and storing new supplies for every theme and every occasion, create one clearly labeled bin that holds the core items

you can reuse again and again. Think of it as your family’s celebration toolkit. Inside that bin might be:

• A neutral, reusable tablecloth (or two)

• A set of simple cloth or high-quality paper plates and napkins in classic colors (a basic red can be used for Valentine’s Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Christmas, and so much more)

• Candle numbers for birthdays

• A versatile banner that can say “Celebrate” or “Happy Day” instead of a specific age or theme

• A few strings of reusable decorations or fairy lights

• A small container of activity basics like balloons, bubbles, or craft supplies

• A special cake stand or serving tray that only comes out for celebrations

The items don’t need to be fancy. They need to be intentional.

When everything lives in one place, a few powerful things happen. Planning becomes easier because you’re not starting from zero each time. Spending decreases because you’re supplementing instead of rebuying. Storage becomes contained because the rule is simple: if it doesn’t fit in the bin, something else has to go.

From there, you layer in the temporary and the personal. A themed banner, a favorite character cake topper, seasonal flowers, or a handmade sign. These pieces come and go. The system stays.

February is a perfect month to think this way. Between winter birthdays, classroom Valentines, and family gatherings, it’s easy to accumulate piles of one-time-use items. Instead of storing three different Valentine’s tablecloths and six halfused packs of heart plates, your One-Bin Party Kit becomes the base. Add a pop of pink, a bowl of candy, and then let those temporary pieces go when the season passes.

The deeper lesson here isn’t just about bins and shelves. It’s about separating love from excess. It’s about realizing that creating joyful memories does not require creating long-term clutter.

Organization is not about depriving joy. It’s about designing systems that support what actually matters. When your home holds your memories instead of your leftovers, you make room for the next celebration to feel just as special. XOXO,Amy
