Chapter 1 IN the quiet of Cardwell, nestled along the shores of Far North Queensland, Australia, Deborah pondered deeply over her people's history. Her grandparents, fishermen from the Baltic Sea, faced hardship after World War II. Seeking new horizons, they settled in Cardwell, a town established in 1864 during the British expansion across the continent.

Deborah couldn't ignore the legacy of British colonialism that reshaped nations and displaced indigenous cultures. The British, seeking new lands and resources, asserted dominion over territories across the globe, including Australia. They brought convicts seeking redemption through labour and settlers seeking opportunity and freedom.

"It's not just the Brits," Deborah mused, her thoughts meandering through the annals of history. "Many nations sought to expand their territories in the 1700s. The British were just particularly adept at it." Yet, she felt a weight in acknowledging the consequences—displacement, cultural erosion, and lingering animosities between settler communities and the original inhabitants.

She grappled with her identity in a multicultural Australia, where blending cultures often diluted the distinctiveness of her Alandic Christian beliefs. "Multiculturalism has its merits," she admitted, "but it has also blurred our own cultural heritage and deepened my sense of detachment from my roots."

Deborah wrestled with her faith, once vibrant and central, now overshadowed by a society that often seemed indifferent or even hostile to Christian values. "In a multicultural society," she confided, "it feels uncomfortable to openly embrace my Christian beliefs. I fear being ostracised or ridiculed."

She pondered the warnings from history, recalling the biblical admonitions against idolatry and the pitfalls of cultural assimilation. "The Jewish people were warned," she reflected, "and yet, here we are, grappling with the same challenges."

Turning inward, Deborah contemplated her personal journey. "I yearn to reclaim our love for God, to rediscover our rich cultural heritage," she admitted with a hint of sadness. "I want to stand firm in the truth of my faith, despite the pressures of a changing world."

Her voice blended sorrow and determination as she continued, "We are not just descendants of a European culture; we are a people with a unique history, with traditions that deserve preservation and respect."

In Cardwell, where waves whispered against the shore and the horizon stretched endlessly, Deborah found solace in reconnecting with her ancestral roots. Through introspection and prayer, she sought a path forward—a journey that embraced both the complexities of her multicultural reality and the steadfastness of her Christian faith.

As she shared her story with those willing to listen, Deborah hoped to ignite a renewed sense of pride and purpose within her community—a testament to resilience, faith, and the enduring quest for identity in a world shaped by unity and diversity.

Chapter 2 DEBORAH stood at the edge of Cardwell's Jetty Market, her heart heavy with a sense of displacement. Once a comforting backdrop, her hometown's familiar sights and sounds now felt like barriers separating her from a sense of belonging.

She had grown up in Cardwell, her Alandic Christian heritage deeply woven into the fabric of her identity. Her family had settled here generations ago, seeking a new beginning in this sun-dappled corner of Australia. Lately, Deborah has found herself increasingly aware of the subtle undercurrents of unease that have marked her interactions with others in the town.

One afternoon, as she wandered through the market stalls laden with fresh produce and handmade crafts, Deborah spotted her best friend Emily across the square. With her vibrant spirit and deep connection to the land as an Indigenous Australian, Emily had always been a source of strength and understanding for Deborah.

They found a quiet corner under the shade of a historic Calophyllum tree on the beachfront, away from the bustle of the market. Deborah hesitated momentarily, unsure how to voice the turmoil gnawing at her for weeks. Finally, she took a deep breath and spoke.

"Emily, I don't know how to say this... but lately, I've been feeling like I don't belong here," Deborah confessed, her voice tinged with vulnerability.

Emily looked at her friend with concern, her dark eyes reflecting the sympathy she felt. "Deb, what's been going on? You've always been a part of this town."

Deborah sighed, her gaze drifting over the vibrant tapestry of market vendors and shoppers. "I know, but sometimes it feels like my heritage sets me apart.

People look at me differently because of my Alandic Christian background."

Emily reached out and gently squeezed Deborah’s hand. “I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way, Deb. It shouldn’t be like this.”

Deborah nodded, grateful for Emily’s understanding. “Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if history had been different,” she mused quietly. “If the British had come to Australia with the intention of learning from and working alongside the Indigenous peoples, rather than imposing their own ways and taking their land...”

Emily's expression turned sombre as she listened. "I hate that too," she admitted softly. "My ancestors, our ancestors, had so much knowledge and wisdom about this land. They could have shared that with the newcomers. Instead, they were pushed aside, their cultures suppressed.

Tears welled up in Deborah's eyes. "It's just so unfair. And now, generations later, I still feel the echoes of that injustice."

Emily nodded in understanding. "Deb, your heritage is a part of you. It's something to be proud of, despite the hardships. We can't change the past, but we can honor it by standing together and creating a better future."

Deborah smiled gratefully through her tears. "Thank you, Emily. I needed to hear that."

As they sat together, the weight of Deborah's uncertainty began to lift. In Emily's presence, she found solace and strength to confront her feelings of alienation. She realised that belonging wasn't just about being accepted by others—it was about embracing her heritage and finding allies who understood and appreciated her for who she was.

With Emily by her side, Deborah felt a renewed sense of hope. Together, they would navigate the complexities of identity and history, forging a path forward that honoured both their backgrounds and the land they called home.

Chapter 3 DEBORAH and Emily found themselves at Cardwell's community centre, attending a meeting hosted by the Chamber of Commerce discussing local issues. As the meeting concluded, the two friends lingered behind, chatting about the discussions and the diverse opinions expressed by the townspeople.

Deborah glanced at Emily, her eyes reflecting a deep-seated worry. "You know, Emily, sometimes it feels like we're in a battle. Not a physical one, but a battle of beliefs and values. So many people seem to be running scared, unsure of what to believe in anymore."

Emily nodded thoughtfully. “I see that too. A lot of people have been raised to believe there’s no God or that you can believe in any god you want. It’s a free-forall of ideologies.”

Deborah sighed, leaning against the wall. “It makes me sad. There’s this fear of being openly Christian, as if we don’t want to pitch our tents in the wrong camp.

People are so afraid of being judged or ostracised.”

Emily’s expression grew serious. “The fear is real. Society has become so polarised that standing firm in any belief, especially one as defined as Christianity, feels risky. But it’s important to remember that faith isn’t just about outward expression. It’s about the inner conviction and how we live our lives.”

Deborah nodded, appreciating Emily's wisdom. "You're right. I guess I've been so focused on the external pressures that I've neglected my internal journey. I need to find strength in my faith and not let the fear of societal judgment dictate my actions."

Emily smiled encouragingly. "That's the spirit, Deb. It's about finding a balance.

We can be true to our beliefs without being confrontational. And we can support each other in this journey. It's about community and understanding."

As they walked through the dimly lit streets of Cardwell, Deborah felt a renewed sense of determination. "I want to create spaces where people can feel safe to explore their faith, whatever it may be. We need to build bridges, not walls."

Emily nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. It's about fostering dialogue and mutual respect. We've seen the damage done by division and fear. It's time for healing and understanding."

Deborah looked up at the night sky, the stars twinkling above. "It's a daunting task, but I believe it's possible. With a friend like you by my side, Emily, I feel like we can make a real difference."

Emily placed a comforting hand on Deborah's shoulder. "We will, Deb. Together, we can navigate this battle and emerge stronger, with a deeper understanding of ourselves and each other."

As they continued their walk, their bond grew more assertive. Their friendship and shared commitment to faith and understanding provided hope in a world of uncertainty. They were ready to face the challenges ahead, armed with resilience, compassion, and a steadfast belief in the power of unity.

Chapter 4 MANY years before they became sisters in Christ Deborah met Emily at Cardwell State School and in her heart it has always been the best thing about growing up in Cardwell. Deborah still vividly remembers that first day. She was a shy and nervous child standing at the playground's edge. The other kids were already in their established groups, and she felt like an outsider. Just as she was about to retreat into herself, she heard a burst of infectious laughter.

With her bright eyes and wild, curly hair, Emily was swinging from the monkey bars with ease and confidence that mesmerised Deborah. Emily noticed her standing alone and hopped down from the bars, making a beeline straight for her.

“Hi, I’m Emily. What’s your name?” she asked with a wide, welcoming smile.

“Deborah,” she replied softly.

“Do you want to play?” Emily’s question was simple, but it promised friendship and acceptance.

From that moment, the two became inseparable. Emily's adventurous spirit pulled Deborah out of her shell, and together, they embarked on countless childhood adventures. Their weekends were a whirlwind of exploration, laughter, and discovery.

One of their favourite pastimes was exploring the bushland that surrounded Cardwell. They would pack sandwiches and bottles of water, pretending they were brave explorers charting unknown territory. The dense native trees provided a canopy of shade, and the air was filled with the sounds of nature—birds chirping, leaves rustling, and the occasional rustle of a small animal.

Deborah was scared of snakes and felt dread if they ever encountered a crocodile while fishing, but Emily always said, "Meh! There's nothing to be scared of."

"Look, Deb! I found a goanna track!" Emily would exclaim, crouching down to examine the ground.

Deborah would kneel beside her, their heads close together as they marvelled at the imprint in the dirt. "Do you think it's close by?"

"Maybe. Let's follow it and see!" Emily's eyes sparkled with excitement, and Deborah couldn't help but get caught up in her enthusiasm.

They followed the tracks, giggling and whispering like true adventurers on a grand quest. Sometimes, they found the goanna sunning itself on a rock, and they watched in awe as it slowly lumbered away, its long tail dragging behind it.

Fishing, the other beloved activity, conjured memories for Emily of her fun with her grandfather before Sorry Business meant she could no longer say his name.

Emily’s grandfather had taught her how to fish, and she, in turn, taught Deborah.

They would spend hours by the water, casting their lines and waiting patiently. The quiet moments were filled with conversation—about school, their dreams, and the little things that made them happy.

“Do you think we’ll catch anything today?” Deborah would ask, her eyes fixed on the water’s surface.

“Maybe. But even if we don’t, it’s still fun, right?” Emily would reply, her smile as bright as the sun reflecting off the water.

And she was right. The act of fishing, the time spent together, was what mattered most. They would share stories, secrets, and dreams, their bond growing stronger with each shared moment.

One afternoon, they decided to try their luck at a new fishing spot Emily's grandfather had mentioned. The place was a little further away, nestled in a secluded cove not too far from mangroves. They had to navigate through dense underbrush, but the promise of adventure made it all the more exciting.

When they finally arrived, the view took their breath away. Still, across the river, there were impressions of a crocodile sliding into the river. Deborah hesitated to set up her line.

"Do you think there are any crocodiles here?" Deborah asked fearfully.

"Maybe! You never know," Emily responded with a grin. "Let's keep an eye out."

Deborah gave in, and they fished. They talked about everything and nothing.

Emily's laughter was like music, and Deborah felt a deep sense of contentment. In those moments, all her worries seemed to vanish.

Their friendship wasn't just about the adventures but the bond they forged through shared experiences. Emily became more than just a friend; she became like a sister. They celebrated each other's victories and comforted each other in times of need.

One evening, as the sun set over the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, Emily turned to Deborah with a thoughtful expression.

"Do you wish your grandparents hadn't immigrated to Australia?" she asked.

"Sometimes," Deborah admitted. "But having you as a friend is the best."

Emily smiled, her eyes filled with understanding. “I’m glad you’re here, Deb. You’re my best friend.”

Deborah felt a warmth in her chest, grateful for their friendship. “You’re my best friend too, Em.” As the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, they packed up their fishing gear and headed home, their hearts full of the day’s adventures. Their bond, forged in the wilds of Cardwell, was unbreakable, and they knew that no matter where life took them, they would always have each other.

Chapter 5 DEBORAH and Emily's teenage years were a whirlwind of adventure, rebellion, and the intoxicating allure of freedom. They were known throughout Cardwell as the inseparable duo who brought energy and excitement wherever they went.

Deborah's roots in the Baltic Sea and Emily's Indigenous Australian heritage formed a unique and powerful bond that set them apart.

Weekends were the highlight of their youthful escapades. They would often sneak out after dark, climbing out of bedroom windows with backpacks slung over their shoulders, filled with snacks, a change of clothes, and the occasional bottle of booze they managed to convince older mates to get for them. Their destination was usually the beach, where bonfires blazed, and music echoed into the night.

One particularly memorable night, they decided to attend a beach party that had been the talk of Tully High for weeks. It was supposed to be the biggest gathering of the summer, with students from neighbouring towns flocking to Cardwell's shore.

As they approached the beach, laughter and music grew louder, and the smell of salt water mixed with the smoky aroma of the bonfire filled the air.

"Deb, this is going to be epic!" Emily shouted over the noise, her eyes gleaming with excitement.

Deborah grinned, her heart pounding with anticipation. "Definitely. Let's make this a night to remember."

They plunged into the crowd, greeting friends and joining in the revelry. The bonfire cast a warm glow on their faces as they danced and laughed, the flames flickering in rhythm with the music. With her infectious energy, Emily pulled Deborah into a wild dance, their movements mirroring the waves crashing against the shore.

As the night wore on, they found themselves sitting around the fire, passing a bottle of rum between them. The warmth of the alcohol coursed through their veins, making them feel invincible. They shared stories, secrets, and dreams, the bond between them growing stronger with each passing moment.

But beneath the laughter and camaraderie, Deborah felt a growing emptiness.

The thrill of these nights was undeniable, but it was fleeting. She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more to life than the temporary highs they chased.

“Do you ever wonder if there’s more to life than this?” Deborah asked, her voice barely audible over the crackling fire.

Emily looked at her, surprise flickering in her eyes. “What do you mean?”

"I don't know. Sometimes I just feel like... like we're missing something. Like there's a bigger purpose out there that we're not seeing," Deborah explained, her words slurring slightly from the rum.

Emily frowned, considering Deborah's words. "I guess I get what you mean. But right now, I just want to enjoy the moment. We have our whole lives to figure things out, right?"

Deborah nodded, but the gnawing feeling persisted. They figured it was time to head home as the party began to wind down, but decided instead to take off and go bush bashing in Murry Upper. They stumbled to Emily's car, giggling as they tried to keep their balance. Emily, always the more confident driver, took the wheel.

The road was dark and winding, the headlights cutting through the night. They sang along to the radio, their voices blending with the hum of the engine. But as they rounded a bend, a wallaby suddenly appeared in the middle of the road, its eyes glowing in the headlights.

"Watch out!" Deborah screamed.

Emily swerved instinctively, and the car veered off the road. With a sickening jolt, they crashed into a sugar cane paddock not far from scub. For a moment, everything was silent except for the ringing in Deborah's ears. Dazed and disoriented, she opened her eyes and saw Emily slumped over the steering wheel.

"Emily! Are you okay?" Deborah's voice trembled with fear.

Emily groaned, lifting her head slowly. "Yeah, I think so. Are you hurt?"

Deborah checked herself for injuries, her hands shaking. Miraculously, they both seemed unharmed. The car, however, needed a bit of love, but the damage didn't look too serious.

“We need to get out of here,” Emily said, her voice steady but laced with panic.

They stumbled out of the car, leaning on each other for support. The reality of their recklessness hit them hard. They had narrowly escaped disaster, and it was a sobering wake-up call. As they walked back to town in the pre-dawn light, the silence between them was heavy with unspoken fears and realisations.

Deborah couldn’t ignore the gnawing feeling any longer. There had to be more to life than the fleeting thrills and close calls. She glanced at Emily, who seemed lost in her own thoughts.

"Em, do you think this is a sign?" Deborah asked quietly.

Emily sighed, her bravado fading. "Maybe. I don't know. But I think we need to figure out what we're really looking for. This... this can't be it."

Their near-tragedy marked the beginning of a profound shift in their lives. The search for something deeper, something more meaningful, began to take root in their hearts. It was the start of a journey that would lead them to places they never imagined, guided by a yearning for purpose and a sense of the divine.

Chapter 6 DEBORAH’S journey to recapture the faith of her childhood and Alandic ancestors began with a visit to a small church in Cardwell. She wanted to explore the feeling of growing emptiness despite the wild escapades and the carefree image she projected, particularly after what she was calling Em-De's near-death experience.

On the Sunday in question, she sought solace; she walked into the humble church, its whitewashed walls and simple wooden pews starkly contrasting with the chaos of her social life. The warmth and sincerity of the small congregation immediately drew her in. They welcomed her with open arms, and Deborah felt a sense of belonging for the first time in a long while.

Emily, ever the loyal friend, was sceptical but supportive. She had always been there for Deborah, and this was no exception. Although the concept of organised religion was foreign to her, she attended services with Deborah out of loyalty. She watched as her friend was captivated by the messages of hope and forgiveness, which resonated deeply with Deborah, stirring something within her that had been dormant for years.

As the weeks went by, Deborah’s transformation became more apparent. She was calmer, more centred, and began to find joy in small things. The sermons on grace and redemption spoke to her heart, and she started to see her life and actions through a different lens. Emily couldn’t ignore the positive changes in her friend.

Despite her reservations, she began attending church more regularly, hoping to understand what was transforming Deborah.

Emily struggled with the idea of faith. As an Indigenous Australian, she carried the weight of her ancestors’ history, marked by suffering and resilience. The concept of a benevolent God seemed distant and foreign, a far cry from the tangible, spiritual connection she felt with her land and heritage. Yet, she couldn’t deny the peace she saw in Deborah and wanted to explore the source of this newfound strength.

One Sunday, during a particularly powerful service, the church was filled with a palpable sense of presence. The pastor spoke about the Holy Spirit, describing it as a comforting guide in times of trouble and a source of inner peace. As the congregation prayed, Deborah felt an overwhelming warmth and lightness.

Tears streamed down her face as she experienced a profound sense of love and acceptance. Standing beside her, Emily felt an inexplicable peace wash over her, a calm she had never known. It was a moment that neither could fully explain, but both knew it was real.

This shared experience became a turning point for them. They began to delve deeper into their faith, attending Bible studies and engaging in long conversations about spirituality and purpose. Emily's curiosity grew, and while she still grappled with reconciling her Indigenous heritage with her new spiritual journey, she found solace in the exploration.

Emily’s journey took a significant turn when she decided to visit her ancestral lands. She invited Deborah to join her, hoping the trip would provide clarity. They travelled to a remote area where Emily’s ancestors had lived for generations.

As Emily observed traditional ceremonies and reconnected with her cultural roots, she felt the power of the Holy Spirit overcome her and began weeping for the lost. This transformative experience made her realise that not all her faith and heritage could exist in harmony - Ephesians 6:12: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

During one of the ceremonies, as the rhythmic beat of the didgeridoo resonated through the air and the smoke of the sacred fire swirled around them, Emily felt like she was fighting a battle that was set to overcome her and she cried out to Jesus for help. She then felt the peace of the Holy Spirit overwhelm her. She looked at Deborah, who stood beside her with a look of understanding and support, and in that moment, they both felt the profound unity of their shared journey, strengthening their bond and deepening their friendship.

This revelation marked a new chapter in their lives. Deborah continued to grow in her faith, finding strength and purpose in her relationship with God. Emily embraced Christianity and now viewed some of her cultural practices in a new light, leading her to a deeper understanding of herself and her place in the world. Together, they navigated their spiritual journeys, their friendship serving as a beacon of support and understanding, reminding them of the importance of community in their faith.

Chapter 7 DEBORAH and Emily had been journeying with Christ for a couple of years.

Deborah studied digital design online, worked as a freelance graphic designer, and volunteered in her local community. Growing in Christ has become a quiet, comfortable journey.

Enjoying a gentle breeze carrying the scent of the ocean, Deborah found herself at one of Cardwell's local cafés, sipping a latte and reflecting on her recent conversations with Emily and how her faith had brought a newfound sense of purpose where she no longer felt like an outsider in Australia.

The café, a cozy spot overlooking the shoreline, was a favourite place for locals to gather and catch up on the latest news.

A friendly voice interrupted as Deborah looked out at the shimmering waters, lost in thought. "Would you Mind if I joined you?"

She looked up to see a tall, handsome man with sandy blonde hair and warm blue eyes. He smiled down at her, holding a coffee cup in one hand and a newspaper in the other.

"Of course," Deborah replied, gesturing to the empty chair across from her.

“Thanks. I’m David, by the way,” he said as he sat down. “I’ve seen you around town a few times. You’re Deborah, right?”

“Yes, that’s me. It’s nice to meet you, David. Are you new to Cardwell?”

David nodded. “Relatively new. My family and I moved here from the States a few months ago. We’re originally from Texas.”

“Texas? That’s quite a change from Cardwell. What brought you here?” Deborah asked, genuinely curious.

“My parents wanted a change of pace and felt drawn to the peacefulness of this place. Plus, they wanted to reconnect with their faith and find a close-knit community,” David explained.

Deborah’s interest was piqued. “Are you and your family Christians, then?”

David hesitated for a fraction of a second before replying, "Yes, we are. My parents have always been very devout, and their faith has been a big part of our lives."

Deborah smiled warmly. "It's always nice to meet fellow believers. Sometimes it feels like we're few and far between in a place like this."

David nodded, though his eyes briefly flickered with something unreadable.

"Yeah, it can feel that way. But I'm glad I found someone like you, Deborah. It's comforting to know there are others who share the same values."

As they continued chatting, David steered the conversation towards Deborah's life, asking about her background, faith, and thoughts on living in Cardwell. He listened intently, making her feel genuinely heard and understood.

Later that evening, Deborah met Emily under the Calophyllum tree at their usual spot. "I met someone new today," Deborah began, a slight blush colouring her cheeks. His name is David, and he's from Texas. He seems really nice."

Emily raised an eyebrow, sensing her friend's excitement but also feeling a twinge of concern. "That's great, Deb. But be careful, okay? Sometimes people aren't always what they seem."

Deborah nodded, appreciating Emily's protective nature. "I know, Em. But he seems sincere. He even said he's a Christian."

Emily sighed, her intuition telling her to be cautious, particularly as a couple of her friends had been talking about Texas Dave and how he likes to get on the drinks at the local. This is particularly true in light of the biblical roles played by Miriam, the prophetess; prophetess Deborah, who led worship services and teaches as part of her leadership; the role of the woman at the well; Martha and Mary, with Jesus encouraging her to sit at his feet at a time when this was not the done thing as women were to serve, not to listen; and Mary Magdalene being the first person Jesus appears to at the tomb who then becomes the first messenger to share Jesus has risen from his grave, despite there being opportunity for it to have been a male.

The book of 1 Corinthians has caused much controversy because of the Scripture 1 Corinthians 14:34, in which women are asked to be silent. Still, in the same book, they are also encouraged to prophesy to the church, and women are encouraged to learn in a culture where women are not encouraged to learn.

Despite the battle, Deborah decides to take on a position in church leadership if the opportunity presents itself. She starts following modern Christian prophets on YouTube, hoping for a word to confirm her next steps. She knows God speaks through His people, and yearns for a clear sign, something to guide her in this time of confusion.

The stories of strong Christian women in the Bible resonated deeply with her.

They were women of faith, leaders in their own right, and their stories gave her courage.

But the doubts lingered. What if I’m wrong? She wonders, “What if I’ve misunderstood God’s will for my life?” She didn’t want to go against His instructions, but the pull towards pastoral ministry was becoming impossible to ignore.

"Deborah, you okay?" Emily's voice called from the kitchen.

Deborah closed her Bible and joined her friend. Emily was making tea, the comforting aroma of chamomile filling the air.

"I'm just...trying to figure out what I want with my life," Deborah confessed, taking a seat at the kitchen table. "I've always wanted a family, but now I feel like God might be calling me to become a pastor. It's confusing and a bit scary."
