Welcome to the 2024 General Assembly!

Whether this is your first or 31st time at a General Assembly, we are glad you’re here. In these days, we hope that you find opportunities to connect, learn, be challenged, worship and have fun with Cooperative Baptists from across the country and around the world. Throughout this week, we invite you to re:imagine the ways in which we can proclaim and practice our faith as we hear from partners, colleagues and friends.

This re:imagination is not one we approach alone, as the Holy Spirit moves among us, stirring up our holy imaginations and allowing sparks of innovation in our communities and ministries.

This week, we invite you to consider the ways in which God is shaping and transforming your life as you share stories from your context and hear the ways in which others have been experiencing transformation in a post-pandemic world by asking new questions, embracing new ways of serving, imagining new ministries, setting aside old fears and rediscovering the incredible gifts they have been given to serve their communities.

As a participant at this General Assembly, you are an integral part of this Fellowship tapestry.

Transformers: Re-Shaping How We Care for Ourselves and the Communities We Serve

Traditional self-care advice is a helpful baseline but does not always meet the needs of spiritual care practitioners. The pandemic further stretched chaplains’ and pastoral counselors’ resources, including those for self-care. Yet factors impacting burnout require a wider lens: they began pre-pandemic and continue into the present. What we have been doing to care for ourselves may no longer be working. We need new tools. This two-day training invites chaplains, pastoral counselors and others into a space of transformation to reshape and re:imagine new resilience tools that can be implemented into daily ministry in specialized settings, informed by the realities of spiritual care.

Join us for a tradition of late night services that stem from the first Watch Night service held December 31, 1862, as enslaved people gathered in worship late in the evening watching and waiting for the news of freedom to come through the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

This Learning Lab explores varieties of religious experience in Baptist history, the impact of cultural contexts on Baptist approaches to conversion, the need for a re-formation of conversion morphologies (processes) in the present moment and options that churches might consider when approaching and articulating the nature of conversion inside and outside the congregation. Bill J. Leonard is the author of several Baptist history books and the founding dean and professor of divinity emeritus, Wake Forest University School of Divinity.

Presenter Amanda Tyler will investigate the role of Baptist theology, ethics and history related to political campaigns and elections. Past into Purpose: How Understanding the Past Creates Vibrant Future Ministries

Why does the past matter for the ministries of tomorrow? Every church has a history of stories of redemptive work and failures to witness well to the Gospel. This session helps clergy and laypeople think through the importance of understanding their community’s history. We will provide suggestions and key insights for doing congregational history well, and for applying it to ministry.

Findings from The Harmony Project: What Church Musicians Need to Thrive

This Learning Lab will present the findings from a study done by Polyphony Music Resources about what church musicians need to thrive in the future. It will provide valuable, qualitative information in the form of major themes and concepts to help church musicians and those who work with them better understand what makes them thrive. Hear what 100 church musicians said they need to help music ministry succeed long-term.

Telling Another Story® to Change Hearts and Minds

This Learning Lab creates a space for dialogue on sexual orientation and gender identity in order to provide an opportunity for traditional biblical perspectives on these issues to be questioned and discussed. Much of society and many faith communities hold positions stemming from scriptural interpretations which beg to be revisited in light of current cultural understanding and scientific research.

Church food pantries can’t end hunger alone; federal nutrition programs must do their part, too. In this session, attendees reflect on hunger in your communities and share what policy changes would make the most difference. Would you prioritize improvements to WIC, the Child Tax Credit, Summer Meals, something else? Reimagine your community without hunger and what it would take to get there. We will end by writing to Congress about how they address hunger’s causes—and advance its solutions—today.

Mass Incarceration and Missions

Participants gain an introductory understanding of the origin, growth and current state of mass incarceration in America. The focus will be on diverse ways that secular and religious communities are bringing good news to impacted individuals and families.

Madeline McClenney, Ph.D., is president and founder of the ExodusFoundation.org, a Christian organization working to stop the flow of African-Americans to prisons. She is a prison abolitionist and an ordained Baptist minister.

Ron Roseboro is trauma care specialist with ExodusFoundation.org. He is a survivor of mass incarceration who understands the issues from the inside out.

Psalms for Black Lives

Drs. Gabby and Andrew Wilkes lead participants in a justice imagination lab, an interactive, skill-building experience based on their best-selling book, “Psalms for Black Lives.” Participants of this session leave the experience with an enhanced capacity to envision and build just congregations and communities.
