Welcome to the 25th meeting of the CBF General Assembly! This gathering is always an uplifting event for our Fellowship. Under one roof you can dialogue about how to do church better, gather for an inspirational time of worship and see friends from across the country. I hope you’ll get a chance to do all three. If this is your first General Assembly, make sure and give yourself an opportunity to experience a little bit of all that will take place. This year we are blessed to welcome both Tom Long and Diana Butler Bass to our Assembly — two gifted thinkers and speakers. You’ll be blessed to hear from them as we come together to worship God in Jesus Christ. With this being the 25th meeting of the General Assembly, our gathering is even more significant than usual. You might think it’s enough for us to merely celebrate our 25th Anniversary, but as we gather we’ll not only celebrate what God has done, we’ll also be launching into the future. You’ll hear from the Missions Council and the Governing Board about a new strategic plan for CBF Global Missions and how you and your church can be a part of it. If we embrace this plan as a Fellowship, then we’ll have the opportunity to renew and even increase our commitment to long-term presence on the mission field. You’ll also hear about the first ever Fellowship-wide fundraising campaign in our history. Our goal is to raise $12 million that will support forming healthy congregations, nurturing young Baptists and sustaining Global Missions. Each of these three undertakings is critically important in our Fellowship. Congregations need a partner that will help them carry out their work. Young Baptists need places and times to gather for fellowship, for discernment of call and support, and global mission is the very heart of our shared identity. Sending field personnel, partnering with indigenous Christians and bringing congregations together to engage in global mission are all worthy of our support. Our theme as we move into this milestone year together is taken from 2 Corinthians 5 — “For Christ’s love compels us!” For 25 years, we have been busy doing what, together, we believed to be Kingdom work. At times it has taken on different shapes and sizes, but underlying it all was a shared commitment to being the hands and feet of Christ. We’ve done it because, as Christ-followers, we are “compel-led” to do it. But even more than that, I believe we have come together because Christ’s love is “compel-ling.” The vision of God’s Kingdom coming through field personnel, chaplains and pastoral counselors and church starters is compelling. The vision of God’s Kingdom coming through congregations carrying out their mission and through individuals living out their call is compelling. It has been and continues to be something worthy of our deepest aspirations, our best efforts and our abiding commitments. On behalf of the Governing Board and the General Assembly Steering Committee, we are glad you are here and we look forward to celebrating together not only what God has done but what God is going to do through us in the future!

Leadership Institute In a time when many traditional church structures are crumbling, when our communities are increasingly multicultural and religiously pluralistic, when the so-called “Nones” are growing in number and when even longtime Christians confess uncertainty about their faith, church leaders need to respond nimbly to these challenges. In order to think through how pastors and other church leaders can respond to this new and perplexing environment we will take a fresh look at a familiar resource — the letters of the New Testament. It is well-known that the letters of Paul and the other New Testament letters contain great theological truths (such as salvation by grace through faith) but in this seminar we will also explore these letters from a different angle — namely, as expressions of pastoral and practical leadership for fragile new churches in multi-faith, multicultural contexts. These letters can be preached and taught as the creative and courageous attempts of pastors in their own time to do what many church leaders today are seeking to do, namely building communities of faith amid the windstorms of a confusing culture. Asdrubal Forte, his wife Yarelis and his son Alex moved to Miami from Cuba in 2014, following a call to serve God wherever they go. After several months of learning the culture and context of Miami and exploring the idea of church starting, the family started a house church. During this time, Asdrubal and Yarelis provided pastoral care to friends and relatives while saving money to begin holding official services. The church is now a group of families that gather together with a call to serve the city of Miami through integral mission.

Russell Jones serves as the pastor of Mosaic Fellowship in Belton, Texas — a church start currently in its infancy. When presented with an unexpected move and a fruitless search for a new church home, Jones felt called to build one, and CBF of Texas called him to build it in Belton. Jones hopes that as the church matures it becomes a faith family that truly lives out what it means to be a community of faith where all feel welcomed and valued, including the marginalized and those who don’t feel they “belong” in a typical church setting.

“I often think of myself as an accidental church starter,” Jones said. “And many conversations with residents, former residents, clergy and others led us to see they long for the community that church offers. These conversations confirmed that our call to ministering with (not to) the marginalized, the poor and the working class fits a need in Belton.”

Christopher Jones serves as the pastor of Restoring Hope Fellowship in Carrollton, Texas. After years of ministry and efforts to promote justice and a loving adherence to the Gospel, a small group in the North Dallas/ Denton area asked what a ministry would look like that sought to promote young adult leadership, to integrate the social and behavioral sciences and technology with theology and that remembered God’s call for rest. Out of this pursuit emerged Restoring Hope Fellowship.

Ron McCaskill serves as the pastor of Christ Church Cairo in Cairo, Ga. After being the prime mover in starting three Hispanic missions and being a church growth consultant with over 40-plus years of pastoring, McCaskill felt called to something new and unique. With this call, in July 2011 a group of 30 people began exploring ministry with a three-fold vision — to reclaim disenfranchised Baptists, to generate an income stream for Cooperative Baptist missions and to seek to reconnect with the young people who have disconnected with the church.

Dustin Payne serves as the teaching pastor of The Forum Christian Church in Houston, Texas. A graduate of Baylor University’s Truett Seminary, he felt called to Northwest Houston, a very diverse and eclectic part of Texas and the task of sharing life and the Gospel with Millennials and Generation Z. The Forum is centered on authentic, Christ-centered community, discipleship and the re-creation of our city. Their vision is to be a Christian community working to live life to the fullest through the process of discipleship while engrossed in the beauty of God and the restorative work of Jesus Christ.

Carrie Tuning serves as the pastor of Hope Christian Fellowship Church (HCFC) in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Having been a preacher for more than 20 years, Tuning felt the call back to her hometown to begin her church. Focused on the idea of holistic ministry, Tuning hopes that her work will help to meet the economic, physical, psychological, social, intellectual and spiritual needs of the congregation and community. With a core group of 18 individuals, Tuning’s vision is that HCFC will be “a church where everybody is somebody and Christ is in charge.”

Wayne Weathers serves as the pastor and organizer of Vision of Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia. While pastoring another congregation in Philadelphia, Weathers felt a call from God to launch a church in the city that would provide hope to individuals dealing with challenges and despair in their lives. The mission of the church is to go out into the city to create disciples who can minister to both the congregation and the Strawberry Mansion community of Philadephia. The congregation of Vision of Hope is a multi-generational group that focuses on in-reach and out-reach ministry, providing hope in Jesus Christ to members of the congregation and community through practicing spiritual disciplines.

1,000th CBF COUNCIL ON ENDORSEMENT NAMES THE

By Carrie McGuffin and Aaron Weaver DECATUR, Ga. — Less than 20 years after the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship began endorsing chaplains and pastoral counselors, CBF has named its 1,000th endorsed person. The CBF Council on Endorsement on March 5 selected Erin Lysse, a second-year chaplaincy resident at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., as its 1,000th endorsee. Lysse expressed her passion for chaplaincy ministry and the great sense of tradition and honor to be named the 1,000th CBF-endorsed chaplain or pastoral counselor. “Being a chaplain gives me the opportunity to sit with people in some of the worst times they might experience in life. I meet folks who are experiencing crises that change their lives forever,” Lysse said. “CBF is endorsing me as the 1,000th endorsee, and I feel a connection to an important legacy of ministry, and my hope is to continue that legacy.” CBF chaplains and pastoral counselors serve in a variety of contexts including medical centers, correctional institutions, hospice organizations, police and fire and rescue departments, colleges and universities, businesses, retirement communities, pastoral counseling centers, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Civil Air Patrol and in each branch of the United States Armed Forces, as well as numerous other specialized settings. CBF’s chaplaincy and pastoral counseling ministries have a rich history in the life of the Fellowship. After several years of discussion, CBF declared itself a

“religious endorsing body” and formed the CBF Council on Endorsement in 1997 and the following year endorsed its first four chaplains and pastoral counselors: Paula Peek, a hospice chaplain in Kentucky; Tim Madison, a hospital chaplain in Texas; Jim Pruett, a pastoral counselor in South Carolina; and Capt. Jim Harwood, a United States Navy chaplain. Within four years, CBF endorsed more than 100 chaplains and pastoral counselors and in 2001 selected long-time chaplain George Pickle as the Fellowship’s first full-time Endorser for Chaplains and Pastoral Counselors. During Pickle’s 12-year-tenure as endorser, the number of endorsed chaplains and pastoral counselors grew from 138 to 715. After Pickle’s retirement in 2013, U.S. Navy Chaplain Capt. Gerry Hutchinson was selected to succeed Pickle as endorser. Hutchinson shared his excitement to celebrate this milestone endorsement and emphasized the privilege he feels to support those living out a call to minister in these specialized settings. “George Pickle laid a strong foundation for the ministry of chaplains and pastoral counselors with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship,” Hutchinson said. “It is my great privilege to carry the torch onward. I am abundantly grateful that God continues to call, gift and guide women and men to CBF whose passion is Kingdom work through chaplaincy and pastoral counseling.”
