EXPERIENCE

Brisac Gonzalez - June 2019

My work experience at Brisac Gonzalez, consisted of shadowing a team on a housing project. I developed my skills in model-making and honed my proficiency in AutoCAD, where I translated architectural plans into precise digital renderings. This experience showed me, early on, the diverse creativity within architecture and fuelled my ambition to innovate and contribute to the field.

INTERESTS

SPORTS

Running: Raised just over £1,000 for MIND UK by running a half marathon (Great North Run 2023).

Part of a run club in Newcastle, running twice a week.

Gym: maintain a consistent gym routine, exercising five times a week.

Swimming: Since a very young age, former member of the Chelsea and Westminster Swimming Club (2012-2019)

01. THE ART GALLERY

The proposed art gallery is a tribute to the rich historical and cultural aspects of Tynemouth, integrating the concepts of the incubator, void, spirituality, and breathing into this architectural narrative. I wanted to design a building that was more than turning a simple corner.

Each gallery within the building will focus on a specific landmark around Tynemouth, showcasing both artistic representations and historical artefacts related to that landmark. This approach not only celebrates the unique identity of Tynemouth but also fosters a deeper connection between the visitors and the town’s heritage. The client for the Project is Tynemouth Fine Art, of which they had said they don’t have a gallery on their website.

The concept of void creates contemplative spaces with large open areas, voids and enclosed spaces. Spirituality is evoked through high ceilings, natural light, and serene materials. The design emphasises breathing, through a similar tower than the one in the incubator, metaphorically extending the concept of breathing. Landmark-specific galleries include the Priory Gallery, the Pier Gallery, the Tyne Gallery, the North Shields Gallery, the South Shields Gallery and the Turner Gallery.

The integration of these concepts ensures the building is a conscious, breathing structure that honours Tynemouth’s past, present, and future, offering a transcendental experience to visitors.

02. CONCEPT

The design is to combine theory and architecton, forming a design around three conceptual words. Based around air, with a focus on wind, hence the location by the cliffs of Tynemouth.

VOID. The ‘incubator’ has a narrow entrance, heading beneath floor level. To represent the word, we get a sense of heading down into a dark tunnel. A journey going down the stairs into this concrete shell. With small ceiling heights and a narrow corridor that force you through the vertical wind corridor found at the end.

SPIRITUAL. The vertical corridor is designed through timber cladding, with slits in-between each to allow the air to whistle through. The journey through the structure forces you to work with the element of Air, not fight it. Spirituality is represented through the spatial arrangements and how it affects the human mind.

BREATHING. Between the closed and compact concrete corridor, to the bigger, wider timber framed vertical corridor. The concrete allows for protection against the wind whereas the vertical corridor works with it, allowing the structure to breathe. It offers an intimate connection between the user and the surroundings. The art of breathing is translated through the fluidity of the journey

03. CONSTRUCTION IN DETAIL

The key aim of this project was to demonstrate that ‘design’ and ‘technology’ are intrinsically linked and complimentary, and that in many aspects they are mutually interdependent. Throughout, the outcome was of a large scale model whilst being able to draw out the lessons learned from one of three selfselected case studies, of which I chose FAB House by George Clarke. Additionally, an element of cross-referenced work compiling individual lines of environmental, topographic, geometric and material site enquiry to form a representation of construction context, opportunities and constraints was asked.

The focus of this coursework is the development and production of a 1:20 Part-Sectional Model. The task involves creating a detailed model that showcases a section of the chosen project. However, to show a greater amount of detail, a 1:10 scale was thought to be more appropriate. The Part-Sectional Model was worked to effectively convey the details of the selected section, analyse the construction methods employed, and interpret the architectonic aspects of the project.
