About Me

χ໠ Ren

Jie

When I was young, I was always the odd one, the one with crazy ideas and attempts. I used to dream of becoming an inventor, one of the type of Thomas Edison. However as I went to university, I realized that today, we could either be an engineer, or be a designer. There seems to be little place for an inventor. But I want to be both. I want to be part of the Renaissance of Invention. It is never easy to combine art & science, which is exactly what I wish to challenge.

My Inspirations Sebastian Bach My taste of music altered from pop to metal, then to progressive rock, jazz and classic music during my middle school years. I appreciated them partly for their musical complexity. After I came back to it years later by reading The History of Western Philosophy, the theory hit harder, because I was then able to combine my understanding of art with epistemology. I realized art is art because transcendental ÐĮĴìÐĴðÆĮ ĨăřĮ ĮðæĊðťÆĊĴ ĨīĴȘ >ďœÐŒÐīș ĉďÌÐīĊ ĮÆðÐĊÆÐ ìĮ ĴāÐĊ ĴìÐ ȾīЭĮďĊȾ ĨīĴ ďå īĴ æīÌķăăřș ăЭŒðĊæ only the perceptual part to transcendental aesthetics to solve. His taste for art and design was key to his special style as well, and coincidentally I found mine similar to it. Sometimes I think I may become a director as well in the future. It depends, and I want to make the decision after I have done enough research and practices into art and science, the most important undetermined aspect of my cognition.

Technical Basis ESI Algorithm In order to calculate the three-dimensional information of brain activity from EEG data, ESI algorithm (Electrophysiological Source Imaging) is used in this project. To brief the principle of this algorithm, the analogy introduced below is quite helpful.

Star Map

Parallax Measurement

A star map is a 2D projection of stars and galaxies, which lacks spatial accuracy. Adjacent objects on the map can be actually far away.

Typically, astronomers use ‘parallax’ to calculate how far away stars are, so then it is possible to derive an accurate 3D galactic atlas.

EEG Topography

ESI Algorithm

EEG electrodes collect brain signal projection on the skull. By painting the signals on a sheet of paper, you get the topography. Similar to a star map, a topography does not directly point out the active location inside brain.

Multiple electrodes observe the brain from different angles, which is similar to how parallax works. ESI algorithm is hence used to calculate the accurate active location inside the brain.

Experimental Design Using ESI algorithm, 3D brain activity data which corresponds to the raw EEG data was calculated. The calculated data were then used to render a hologram, which was registered to user’s head in the camera.

Everything was packaged into an Android app, in which you can see your head mirroring in the screen, with a real-time brain activity AR overlay.

While the test taker sees it, his/her eye transmits the stimulus to the brain. This stimulus evokes a peak in the visual cortex at 100ms.

ĮÐī ÐĊÐťĴĮ “It is an interesting idea to let people ‘see’ what exactly is happening in the brain with truly acquired data. It really adds to popular science.”

“That’s much more comprehensible than the EEG waveforms. To be honest it is frustrating to realize that you know nothing about your EEG results.”

Scenarios

At the beginning of an EEG experiment, technician can choose from a series of test presets.

The HoloLens cameras recognize the marks on the EEG cap. Then holographic electrode markers are shown on the cap.

3

The markers show directly the status of each electrode. The technician can quickly ťĊÌ ĴìÐ ÅĊďīĉă ÐăÐÆĴīďÌÐĮȘ

Scenario B

1

After an EEG test, the results are not yet analyzed and discussed. Sometimes a group meeting is necessary.

2

Saved data is recalled and sent into the HoloLens system - not only the EEG wave ťăÐĮș ÅķĴ ăĮď ĉÐÌðÆă ðĉæÐĮȘ

3

The whole experiment was recorded, making it possible to relocate to any moment of the test.

In the preparation phase, the holographic marker marks the status of each electrode - what you see is what you get.

4

Conductive paste is injected into these electrodes to lower the impedance, more quickly than ever.

In EEG checkups...

“My colleagues at the EEG checkup rooms complains about the preparation procedures constantly. This will greatly unburdens them.”

During experiments...

“We’ve been with those out-of-date computer interface for too long. It will be exciting to have holographic aids.”

Multi-modal Group Replay Medical images and waveforms are extraordinarily complex, and it is even more complicated to analyze them together. Multi-modal data analysis can be easier in a holographic fashion, especially when it is necessary to share information among a group of people.

4

The group meeting attenders can share one holographic replay, so that they can discuss ÐŨÆðÐĊĴăřȘ

After having a test...

“Now I can watch my EEG test result at home œðĴì t ìЭÌĮÐĴȘ A ÆĊ Ċďœ ķĊÌÐīĮĴĊÌ ìďœ epilepsy happens generally.”

In a group meeting...

“It hasn’t been easier to discuss EEG record, with the help of holographic visualization. It gives us more insights into the data.”

Prospects The EEG visualization technology can be deployed in various forms. Researchers share a HoloLens hologram. Patients watch their test records ķĮðĊæ t ìЭÌĮÐĴȘ AĊ ĮÆðÐĊÆÐ ĉķĮÐķĉĮș ðĴ ĨīďŒðÌÐĮ ĊМ œř Ĵď ðĊĴīďÌķÆÐ EEG knowledge to viewers, through holographic displays.

“Easier to explain things to patients. Also, I ťĊÌ ĉďīÐ ďĨĨďīĴķĊðĴðÐĮ ðĊ ďķī ÆďďĨÐīĴðďĊ with neuroscientists, given this new tool.”

Medical Research

“A powerful visualization tool for research, and a creative, novel way to interpret our research in brain function.”

Doctor-patient Communication

“Brain is less mysterious than before. I can learn a lot by watching the EEG visualization hologram. Happy to see it in museums.”

Background The golden ages of digital camera have faded away. During the second decade of 21st century, the market of digital cameras has been shrinking heavily. Especially, compact cameras suffered hard, however interchangeable cameras did not show a promising future as well. Part of the reason is the introduction of camera modules into consumer smart phones. People no longer need a camera to record their daily life, not to mention that smart phones have advantages in editing and sharing photos.

Design Challenge Existing Problems

Study Subjects

After looking thoroughly into three typical Sony interchangeable lens camera, I put forward several existing problems I encountered, which I think are the major barrier between the experience of a modern camera and that of a smart phone camera. These internal problems of camera are the challenge I have to face in terms of camera interaction optimization.

Partly due to the great amount of functions provided in cameras, the menu system looks ÌðĮďīÌÐīÐÌȘ AĴ ðĮ ăĉďĮĴ Ċ ďÌřĮĮÐř Ĵď ťĊÌ one certain entry.

The camera features two interfaces - the physical one and the virtual one. In most occasions, the physical interface overrides the virtual one, but sometimes the contrary happens resulting in inconsistency.

Beginner Unfriendliness

Lack of Extensions

Most beginners wish only to take high quality photos, however the unfriendliness of the system frightens them, making them unwilling to use a camera.

Since digital camera was invented, the basic åķĊÆĴðďĊ ĮÐĴĮ 쭌РĊďĴ ÅÐÐĊ ÆìĊæÐÌ ȭ ťĊÌ view, take a picture and save it. However lack of extensions really hurts in the age of smart devices today.

If any changes need to take place on interchangeable lens cameras, to whom should these changes appeal? Are we going to draw more potential users from the group of smart phone photo takers, or optimize according to what professionals think?

Attraction Camera-featured Smart Phones

Ordinary Smart Phones Evolution

Trends Mirrorless full-frame is the future.

Mirrorless full-frame camera which combines mobility with capability will dominate. Those cameras with smaller sensors have too inferior image quality to compete. DLSRs are too bulky to be prevalent.

The interface needs improvement.

Interfaces of cameras are obsolete and inconsistent with smart devices today. Even if equipped with numerous control buttons and dials, cameras are generally considered ‘uneasy to handle’.

Photowise extensions count.

Interchangeable lens cameras equipped with photowise extensions are more popular on the market, however few products have that feature.

The market is still promising.

Aside with professional market, the consumer market is promising for mirrorless cameras. If provided with a more user-friendly camera product, image-quality-sensitive customers are willing to try it.

Player B: Life-and-death Decision

After a severe coma after the accident, you fell into MCS state. You can perceive the outside world, but no one can see through into your bell.

You are informed that two people in the accident lost their responsiveness, which includes your companion. One of them may still be conscious, however another is not. You have very limited resources, so you have to abandon one to save another. Make the right move.

Cheers to our beloved Mr. Berger. In a severe accident, he had unluckily fallen into minimally conscious state, unable to react to any stimulus. Though in the diving bell was he locked, his mind was partially free. Fortunately, he was given time and treated well, by his friend Ben. Finally he recovered, and IVY S LY ìðĮ ÅķĴĴÐīŦř œĮ åīÐÐÌȘ

Scenario Empty (PVS)

Enter the bells from the top hatch. The one who went into ‘MCS’ state is hidden behind the two-way mirror.

One-way sight

His fate is out of his own hands.

He is the mind of a MCS individual.

The MCS and PVS ones seem identical no response, cannot see through.

There is only enough medical resource to support one of them. Which decision would you make?
