PRESIDENT Dear MEMBERS It has once again been a privilege to be President of this great Surf Club for the past 12 months. The Surf Club takes pride of place in the town and is a place where friends old and new love to be around. There are so many people to thank for their contributions over the past year. Firstly, a huge thankyou must go to all on the Executive Committee. Brydie Murrihy in her first year as Club Captain did a fantastic job, Dave Hay continues to oversee the progression and advancement of Junior Development, Caitlin McCombe keeping across the very busy Competition area, Heath Armstrong in Major Events (and anything else that needs attention), Jenny Aschhoff acquainting herself with everything associated with the Surf Club building, Zac Horstman tackling the tough task of Training and Assessment, Felicity Koch taking on the huge challenge of Sponsorship and Marketing, the numbers man Tim Boness as professional as ever and Carol Fox doing a superb job as Secretary. A big thank you to you all. Highlights for me during the year include the naming of a new surfboat “Big Kev after you know who! Congratulations Kevin Van Deuren. The Surf Clubs 70th birthday celebrations were a big success with everyone having a great night. Dulux approaching us and subsequently painting the entire Surf Club at no cost with great exposure on the Sunrise show. The Open Female Surfboat crew Lorne Edge achieving a Silver Medal at the Aussies in a sensational result.

"so many people to thank for their contribution..." The GMHBA Lorne Pier to Pub, Lorne 5000 and Mountain to Surf just gets better every year. A big thank you goes to first year Race Director John Takac and Assistant Race Director Tina Westacott. It is such a huge weekend for the Club with the events being run so professionally. Congratulations to all involved. Well done to Sam Aschoff on being awarded the ‘Sharky’ award. A great recognition for all the time and effort you put in around the Club. Thanks to Lindy Hare for again running the door knock and to the merchandise girls Carol Fox, Jodie Emmett and Ali Heyes for another huge effort. Great work by Bec Read and Jo Pincus for taking on the Nippers program. A huge job but they always had a smile for everyone. To Mark and Ali Fuller thanks again for running the P2P BBQ. To Tina Westacott thanks for your continued contribution to the cause in what at times can be tough going. There are many more I could mention, but let me assure all Members that the Lorne Surf Club is in great shape and we look forward to another spectacular season. CHEERS! PETER MURRIHY

CLUB CAPTAIN The 2017/2018 season has been incredibly successful for the Lorne SLSC. The Club Captain position has been an eye opening experience with lots of challenges and learning curves. However, it has been equally rewarding with a number of memorable season highs. This season’s patrols have been of the highest standard. The dedicated patrol volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure the public remains safe while enjoying our beautiful beach. The patrol statistics recorded over the season by the Patrol Captains have resulted in the following accumulated statistics. From approximately 58,000 beachgoers the LSLSC has completed 414 preventative actions, 15 rescues, 67 minor first aids and 3 major first aids. These numbers provide a glimpse of the hard work put in by our lifesavers from each patrol. There were a number of memorable moments this year during patrol. I was lucky enough to witness 14year old Harvey Marriner complete his 100th patrolling hour for Lorne during the Masters carnival. A few weeks later, Nick Murnane completed his 1,000th patrolling hour for the club. These efforts are outstanding and we are incredibly lucky to have them both as members of our fantastic club. All our volunteer lifesavers are led by a sensational group of Patrol Captains and ViceCaptains. I’d like to thank them all for the extra time and effort they give so that their patrol members feel welcome. Thank you very much Lincoln Wymer and Louise Rait, Ed and Fergus Buchanan, Clare Magee, Zac Horstman and Trent Jackson, Lachy and Sean Smyth, Caitlin and Jarred McCombe, Jess Sincock and Larnie Hewat, Sam and Jenny Aschhoff, Nick Phillips and Al Cross, Darcy Carew and Nicolas Lukies as well as Winni Ryan and Nicholas Tsekouras.

"there's been many proud moments..." The P2P was by far the greatest challenge for myself as Club Captain this season. It proved to be not only a steep learning curve, but also a source of many incredibly proud moments. I want to thank and congratulate both John Takac and Tina Westacott for their outstanding contributions in making the Pier to Pub the best event it could possibly be. I am looking forward to continuing to work with both of you next year! I would like to congratulate and thank the members that received Club Captain’s awards this season for their outstanding contribution to the Lorne SLSC. Jack Slykhuis, Jess Sincock, Nicholas Tsekouras and Nick Murnane served as inspirational role models and go above and beyond to help out in their respected areas. Finally I would like to thank my sub-committee members and fellow Executive board members. Sam Aschhoff, Louise Rait, Jack Slykhuis and Jess Sincock gave up their time and effort to ensure that the patrolling side of the club was up to scratch. They performed their roles effectively and often under pressure due to the nature of life saving. It was a pleasure working alongside them. I have also learned a lot from the other Vice Presidents of the Lorne SLSC and I thank them for their wisdom throughout the season. I would likely to especially thank my Dad, Peter Murrihy, for guiding me through the tough moments and supporting my journey as Club Captain. Thank you all for your efforts this season and bring on the next season!

GO LORNE! BRYDIE MURRIHY

CLUB secretary Another year on the committee and what a pleasure it has been to see what is happening in the background of this fabulous club of ours. Once again I am pleasantly surprised at the amount of voluntary work that goes on at every level in the club. Your committee met monthly - both at Lifesaving Vic Headquarters and in Geelong at Tim Boness’ offices. Thanks Tim for providing the space. As per other years we conducted risk analysis on a consistent basis, and considered reports from our Vice Presidents in regards to competition, sponsorship and marketing, finance, training, nippers, events, house, club administration and the club captain. I only had a couple of weeks this year at Lorne over the Christmas and New Year break and once again I was reminded why I love this club so much. To be able to catch up with friends that I have known from the club for over 30 years and to hang out with new friends whilst having a beverage on our beautiful new balcony and sitting in the sun whilst listening to live music was a delight. These connections are such an important reason to be involved in a club like Lorne and I look forward to many more years of doing the same. I was also involved with selling club merchandise with Jodie Emmett and Alison Heyes who once again gave up each morning during the nipper’s program (alongside all those nippers helpers) to sell our club merchandise. It was great to get some new gear this year and to empty the merchandise cupboard of some old stock!

"SO MUCH TALENT AND ENERGY TO ENSURE THE CLUB CAN GROW..." The club's 70th celebrations before the big weekend of Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf were a great success and so many of us enjoyed looking at the old photos and memorabilia that Heath Armstrong and Jenny Aschhoff kindly put together for the night. The club committee will be saying goodbye to Heath and Zac this year. Thank you all for being so dedicated to the club by donating your time, talents and energy to ensure that the club can continue to grow and function. CHEERS! CAROL FOX

training & assessment What an amazing season it has been at Lorne this year! As always, it was a busy period for our dutiful and enthusiastic Training and Assessment team, running awards and camps, skills maintenance, and participating in the patrolling of our beautiful beach. The respective area leaders have provided reports on their portfolios below: Bronze Medallion Camp On the 16th of December 2017, 70 kids ranging from 15 to 17 years of age commenced the Lorne 2017 Bronze Camp. It was a week filled with activity, theory, and fun. This group was probably the most physically competent collection of candidates the instructors had come across. At times we found it difficult to come up with ways to challenge them! As an instructor it is rewarding at the end of the week to reflect on how much can be achieved by a group of teenagers in such a short period of time and to know that you played some part in that. As Peter Murrihy assured the candidates, life-long friendships are made at Bronze camp. Further to this, the skills learnt and practiced throughout the Bronze Medallion course can be taken beyond the beach and used anytime and anywhere, for the rest of your life. The valuable contribution that our ‘Bronzies’ make to the Surf Club is extraordinary and is often under appreciated, especially when they are as skilled and personable as our most recent group. The adeptness of the group was highlighted by their performances both on and off patrol; participating in important areas of the club, including major rescues. We encourage all Bronze Medallion holders to undergo skills maintenance, to strive to achieve additional awards, gain experience on patrols, and most importantly stay in touch with each other and continue to have fun on the beach over summer. The Surf Club, like many opportunities in life, can be all that you make of it. We hope to see a Bronze Camp 2017 reunion on Silver Camp and on patrols this coming season! "we had an amazing number of kids ATTEND THE CAMP..." Silver Medallion Camp This season on Silver camp we ran three awards and one marine license course. We had an amazing number of kids attend the camp, with thirteen candidates attending the First Aid course and receiving their Senior First Aid, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, and Spinal Management awards. An overwhelming twenty candidates attended the IRB Crew course and five people received their IRB Drivers award. As a group of instructors, we were impressed and very proud of how well these members performed over the week. We had the pleasure of having a great group of kids on the course and all thoroughly enjoyed the week. With 12 instructors for 38 candidates it was an impressive feat and everything was successfully achieved by the end of the week. We are looking forward to continually improving our camps and training more awards to upskill our younger members. GAP YEAR , SRC, BRONZE & SILVER MEDALLIONS Gap Year Program Once again, the Gap Year Program was up and running this Summer season. The aim of the program is to engage all members who have completed their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) and not yet qualified for Bronze Camp. We had over 50 participants get involved this season, all who assisted in a range of programs including instructing various nippers groups, acting as water safety and volunteering in the Mountain to Surf and Pier to Pub. It was great to see so many individuals give up their mornings to help out with the program. I would like to thank all the 'Gappies' for their dedication to the program and for assisting in this season’s activities. Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) This season, the Under 14’s Nippers group undertook their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). The SRC Program is the next step after the Nippers program which allows the young members to learn about lifesaving rescue skills and further their understanding of beach awareness. The 10-day program was no match for club members. Everyone completed all theory and practical components of the certificate with extreme dedication and diligence and as a result all 34 Cadets passed the program and received their Surf Rescue Certificate. All the Cadets worked very hard to earn their awards. A huge congratulations to everyone involved! It was a pleasure working alongside everyone this summer season. I would like to thank all the junior instructors for their efforts and most importantly all the Cadets and Gappies for their enthusiasm toward the surf club activities. You should all be very proud!

"THE CANDIDATES WERE VERY IMPRESSIVE..."

Adult Bronze Medallion This season we conducted a fruitful Adult Bronze course, with 6 candidates completing the course successfully to attain their Bronze Medallion. The candidates were very impressive in their aptitude and capacity to complete what was required of them and it was a pleasure to train them for their award. In conclusion, this has been a great year for Training and Assessment at Lorne and we all hope to continue making improvements to our program to maintain the excellence skills of our members and our club! I owe a massive thank you to all of the candidates, instructors, and assessors, who have been an absolute dream to work with over the past twelve months. Each member of the training and assessment team have poured an enormous amount of time and energy into the planning and coordination of their respective programs, and in addition have assisted in numerous other areas of the club. I am very proud of the achievements of my team this year and look forward to working with every one of them in the years to come!

house This season has been busy with set-ups for some major improvements still to come, and some visual changes that happened during February after the peak of our 2017/18 season. Dulux Lorne was selected by Dulux to be entirely repainted as their 200th lifesaving club painted over the years. All of the paint was generously donated by Dulux, and we received new “Lorne Surf Lifesaving Club” lettering on the Northern side of the club. We were extremely grateful and excited about the project, and I am glad to have been a part of it. Dulux appeared on the Today Show in Lorne along with the help of some boaties, nippers and helpful members. Footage was also taken throughout the process and the video released portrayed our club and the repaint spectacularly. Tom’s Bar and Bites This year, I am delighted to say that we have signed on Paul and Bron to another 3-year contract, with great thanks to Tim Boness for arranging the signatures. We have seen excellent service from Paul and Bron over the years as they work very hard over the countless summers to accommodate for our hectic schedule of functions. Maintenance Maintenance that has been completed over the year includes - Security upgrades with new keys and barrels throughout the club - Carpet steam cleaning at the beginning of the season - Stair sanding and recoating at the beginning of the season - Bathroom maintenance – upgrading toilet cisterns Major works still to come - Upgraded key tag system throughout the club and Industrial Estate - Roof replacement – Don’t worry! It will still look the same but with new materials - Staircase to be upgraded and improved

14

"I'M looking forward to seeing these upgrades completed..." These major constructions are necessary due to the safety around our club. I will try my best to keep all major constructions away from our peak season so as not to get in the way of our members, competition and our guests at Tom’s Bar and Bites. I thank all of you for your understanding and patience whilst these constructions are happening. I am looking forward to seeing these upgrades completed and I can’t wait to start the new season!. competition Lorne enjoyed success across a variety of disciplines and age groups this year, proving that we are revered in our Junior divisions all the way through to our Masters, both on the sand and in the water. After success at local carnivals, the Championship events gave our competitors a chance to put their hard work to the ultimate test and the results spoke for themselves. State Titles (Apollo Bay) saw Lorne win every Surf Boat division we entered (Open Men - Lorne 31s, Open Women - Lorne Edge, Reserve Men - Lorne WASAVICS and Reserve Women - French Lorne Jeray). The crews dominated the Reserve Women division with Lorne Atics and UniLornes pulling off a trifecta with French Lorne Jeray. Geoff Matthews (Boat Captain) swept three of the four winning crews, and notably swept his Open Men (31s) to their fourth consecutive State Title and was named Captain of the Victorian Team. Our competitors at ‘the other end of the beach’ had unprecedented results also over the State Titles’ weekend with every Lorne competitor receiving a medal. A highlight for everyone on the beach was the Open Men Swim Team who won gold, lead by Tristan Read who has mentored his junior team mates since Nippers (Tristan Read, Billy Bowden, Thomas Hay and Michael Garbeloto). The ‘people’s team’ who scored a bronze medal in the Open Belt Race had the crowd on their feet, as they fought to keep the rope travelling at speed to not hold Tristan Read in the water back (Tristan Read, James Bowden, Brent Enticott, Vincent Sheehan and David Hay). Hopefully the whiff of success will see that team training through the winter with eyes firmly on Aussie gold next season. The ‘big stage’ awaited for many of our competitors, as they headed to Scarborough (WA) for the Australian Championships with many eager to set the record straight after last year’s Aussies were cancelled due to weather. The event was kicked off with a gold medal in the Surf Boats on Day 1 to the Lorne Agains (in the new Kevin Van Deuren boat no less!) in the 160s women’s division, swept by Geoff Matthews (Paula Matthews, Tamara Brawn, Megan Grierson and Shea Grant)

16

"Our hard work was put to the ultimate test..." In the 2km Ocean Swim on the Sunday, Tristan Read won his age group, Tim Boness came 5th in what initially looked like 3rd with a tumble on the line, and Luke Matthews came 7th in the U/17s (won by Pier to Pub winner, Hayden Cotter). Tristan backed up the next day with gold in the 40+ Surf Race, bronze in the Rescue Tube and 6th in the Ironman, while Tim Boness and Peter Williamson came 7th and 11th in the 50+ Surf Race and Rebecca Read came 8th in her Surf Race. Bec scored a great bronze in the 40+ 2km Beach Run - the second year running Bec has won a medal at Aussies. In the 150 Surf Team event, Tristan, Tim and Peter were 4th by the smallest of margins (1 point off 3rd and 2 points off 1st!) - and the guys are hopeful of going at least one better next year. After the Masters, it was time for our Surf Boat Team to bring it to the best of them in the Open divisions. Read Geoff Matthews’ report for details, but I would again like to congratulate Lorne Edge on their silver medal in the Open Women’s division. I have personally admired those girls for years, and have watched them sacrifice and train like no one else to reach that level and I was thrilled for them in their success. The results across the board showed that there’s plenty of crews to watch next season with every crew progressing through to the Finals at this year’s Aussies. Despite competing through the winter, the IRB Team is never forgotten and recent photos shows that they’re serious adrenaline junkies! We sent a team to the Australian Championships in Thirroul NSW in July last year and as this publication goes to print the team is gearing up for another campaign back at Thirroul on 13-15 July 2018. Jess Sincock and Jack Slykhuis have done a fantastic job expanding the team and the future is very bright for the IRB Team. Outside of their competition commitments, the IRB Team supports the rest of our competitors in providing water safety at the carnivals over the summer months; the water safety roles are mandatory in order for our competitors to compete, and without the support of the IRB Team (and other volunteers) we couldn’t do what we do - thank you.

competition The Life Saving World Championships are being held in Adelaide, South Australia from 16 November to 2 December 2018 and Lorne expects to send a large team across to Glenelg. The event will be a prelude to the 2019 Australian Championships (to be held at Broadbeach and North Burleigh) which will hopefully see the return of some big surf to the sport. The Club has booked a significant amount of accomodation, and we encourage friends and supporters to join us in supporting the competitors for the pinnacle of Surf Life Saving competition (30 March 2019 to 6 April 2019). As a final note, I would like to thank my sub-committee for their leadership and support over the season. Geoff Matthews (Surf Boat), James Bowden (Board & Ski), Jess Sincock and Jack Slykhuis (IRB/Powercraft), and Georgia Chester (Beach) each captain their respective areas, and do a lot behind the scenes to keep the season running smoothly. David Hay (VP Junior Development) has been instrumental in the success of our Juniors in recent years, and there’s not a week that goes by during the season that we’re not on the phone, and I thank him for his support. Finally, the competitors couldn’t even make it to the start lines without Jasmin Lance (Team Manager) who toils away with entries and logistics for everyone, and I thank Jas for all she has done to make the season run smoothly. Competing in Surf Life Saving is for anyone, no matter what age or ability. It’s a great team sport, and we’re privileged to be members of a unique Club who supports the competition team in their endeavours. I am personally grateful for that support, and I encourage anyone interested in having a go to contact me or the relevant area captain - you won’t regret it! Here’s to another great year in the black and white cap and may Huey bring more success Lorne’s way in 2019.

surfboats The 2017/18 surf season has been one of, learning, growing, great achievement and great fun. We have shared some difficult experiences and some exciting and intense moments. Our crews, sweeps and coaches were constantly challenged and testament to the relationships within the boat area, we worked together to build stronger bonds and positive outcomes. We represented Lorne with pride at Local carnivals never failing to come away without giving our best and often with the winning pennant.Four of our crews represented Victoria at the Interstate Championships and 4 crews made semi finals or better at the Australian Surf Rowers Open Championships. Lorne Edge won a Silver medal in the Open Women, in 6 to 8 foot surf showing the rest of Australia they are a crew to watch out for. Our State Title performances were grand with crews winning gold in every division in which we competed. - Lorne 31 Gold Open Men - Lorne Egde Gold Open Women - Lorne Wasavics Gold Reserve Men - Lorne Jeray Gold Reserve Women - Lorne Unicorns Silver Reserve Women - Lorne Atics Bronze Reserve Women And while Gold medals often measure success, the achievements of all of our crews should not be dismissed regardless of results. We have a great bunch of people who enjoy contributing to the Club and the culture of the boat area. We had an Under 23 Men’s crew race, and an Under 19 Women’s crew race at various carnivals and hope to build on our under age divisions next season. Our amazing domestic season was then punctuated with an even more amazing Australian titles campaign with six crews representing Lorne at Scarborough Beach. Crews travelled West with genuine hope and anticipation and all crews performed to a level that is fast becoming a trademark of the Lorne Surfboat team. Competition kicked off with our 160’s Masters Women, the “Lorne Agains” dominating the preliminary heats of racing and despite a couple of mishaps in the final, powering through the field for a much-deserved win.Our Reserve Grade rowers were standouts through the heats with the WASAVICS dominating the men’s division and the LorneAtics and UniLornes accruing near top points in the females.

20

"WE HAVE NATIONAL GOLD ON OUR HORIZON..." Special thank to sponsors: HP, Creffields and Lorne Beach Pavilion All three crews raced through to semi finals and were hopeful of progressing to the medals rounds when Mother Nature chose to halt their passage. As is often the case with Surfboat rowing, the tricky conditions particularly the shore break impacted upon the crews and they failed to progress. Nevertheless it was an amazing achievement by these crews who later received the following National ranking for the 2018 season. - Wasavics ranked 9th in Australia - UniLornes ranked 10th in Australia - LorneAtics ranked 11th in Australia Our Open Men and Open Women were equally as impressive. Our Men, Lorne 31 were virtually unstoppable in the heats and were real contenders to make the final. In a semifinal of four boats they were hit by a wave that saw them take water and as a result, put them behind the rest of the field. An unbelievable row brought them back into contention, only to miss the inshore run and place them in fourth. Our Open Women, Lorne Edge were again a standout! Their form through the heats showed they were never going to miss the final. Living up to expectations the girls lined up for the Open Women’s final with a great attitude, spirit and confidence, knowing that they deserved to be there. A magnificent start saw them hit the lead and hold that position for the whole race, bar perhaps the final two strokes. Pushing to the shore in dead water and virtually bouncing over a rebounding shore break they were tipped for the Gold by Northcliffe who had the assistance of an inshore run that brought them up from two lengths behind. An incredible achievement to win SILVER and a proud moment for the girls, our supporters and myself. - National Rankings for the Open Men and Women: - Lorne 31 ranked 7th in Australia - Lorne Edge ranked 2nd in Australia The whole season saw an enormous effort from everyone, training hard, coaching, towing boats, lifting boats, supporting each other and sharing in celebrations. We have a fantastic group of people who operate as a real team allowing us to achieve what we have this year. To have five crews ranked inside the top 12 in Australia is unheard of, particularly from a Victorian Club. We now have National Gold on our horizon and look forward to next season with even more vigor and determination. GEOFF MATTHEWS - BOAT CAPTAIN

team manager board & ski TEAM MANAGER This year was a great year for Lorne's competitors. We had a strong boat and senior team and a great turnout at the Victorian Masters Championship. Our Aussies team was smaller than previous years, with the team travelling to Perth, but with some amazing results. Looks like we are on track for a bigger and stronger team representing at Aussies next year when we are back at Broadbeach. It's an asset to the club having so many competitors from different disciplines and ages, supporting each other and representing our club. A quick reminder to all competitors to document everything throughout the season. A simple photo of the patrol log book or your proficiency card can save a lot of drama and disappointment come States and Aussies, when patrol hours and bronze certificates need to be proven to LSV. You never know when a piece of paper is going to go missing and cause havoc! This year was my first year in the Team Manager role and it was a massive learning curve. Thanks to everyone who helped me out and for their patience and support in getting our competitors on the beach. Looking forward to great season with you all next year. TEAM MANAGE- JASMINE LANCE BOARD AND SKI The season has been one of the most successful senior seasons in years. We have a great group of young athletes and some older athletes who have teamed up and as a club, have had a number of fantastic results throughout the year culminating in medals at State (Apollo Bay) and Aussie Titles (Perth). The highlights from a board and ski point of view being the success of the U17 Gold Medal Taplin Team and U15 Gold Medal Aqua Cam Team at State Titles. As a result of having these younger athletes coming through, the club has invested in some new craft to help foster their growth in the pursuit of once again being the premier club in Victoria. We purchased some new Racing Mals at the start of the season which have all been put to good use. A new Charger ski has also been ordered which should arrive at the club very shortly, adding to the fleet and complementing the two novice ski’s previously purchased in recent years. A Huge thanks must go to Lisa who is providing the training and coaching of these youth competitors, I know that they all really appreciate the time and effort she has put in juggling family and new work opportunities. Looking forward to the new season ahead. SKI AND BOARD CAPTAIN - JAMES BOWDEN

IRB/Powercraft This season Lorne’s IRB Team warmly welcomed 4 new members! This meant that we had 3 crews competing this year. The season for us started back in January where we helped the new members learn how to race and formulate teams for the season. The training continued over the following months with the relationship of the team and new members' skills growing stronger . The season officially kicked off at the end of April in Mordialloc, where we finally got to put our training on show. We were really pleased with how the team went especially since it was a lot of people’s first carnival. Cancellations of race weekends due to poor conditions meant there weren’t as many races this season as previous years. We were on home soil for States once again which is always a fantastic way to finish of a season. In July we competed at the Australian Championships in Thirroul NSW. It was a huge weekend with competition over 3 days. Aussies is always a fantastic event and always looked forward to by the team. It is a great chance to watch and learn from the best clubs across the country at one of the best beaches in Australia. In November of this year, the World Life Saving Competition is in Adelaide. The team is really excited to represent Lorne at the competition and we are working on building our numbers for the event. We are even working on getting some of the old race winning team members back in the boat. The team would love to thank those who came to support us during the season. We had many visitors come and say hi to us on the beach and give us a cheer. We would especially like to that Neil Moriarty, Michael Barrand and James Carew for officiating for us, we definitely couldn’t have competed without you! Kind regards, POWERCRAFT/IRB CO-CAPTAINS – JESS SINCOCK & JACK SLYKUIS

MARKETING, PUBLICITY & SPONSORSHIP The areas of marketing, sponsorship and publicity were brought together for the first time under a Vice President custodianship. The imperatives this year, were to capture additional income for the Club and to project our proud brand throughout Australia. There were a number standout highlights over the year and these included; receiving an Australia Day award, the Dulux repaint of our Club (with channel 7 Sunrise coverage) and the abundant hive of GMHBA Pier to Pub publicity. Accepting an Australia Day Award for the Best Community Sporting Event of the Year (Surf Coast Council), firmly cemented that our Club’s volunteer allegiance is indeed amazing. Congratulations members on receiving this honour presented at Anglesea on Australia Day; it was a personal highlight for me. Sponsorship and ticket sales from our major events remain a vital part of our Club’s income and therefore require strategic leadership to keep growing. A two-year contract has been signed with key naming right partner GMHBA and new minor sponsorships with Great Ocean Road Costal Committee and Telsa. Hahn Super Dry, 2XU and Speedo all provide invaluable major sponsorships and innovative value-adding event initiatives. All contracts were reviewed to ensure robustness, relationships fostered with sponsors and a collaborative approach undertaken with stakeholders to ensure mutually beneficial benefits of ‘real value’ were delivered. There is also a highly valuable portfolio of in-kind sponsorship the Club benefits from worth over $200k. The Club’s sponsorship agreements are in-place and income growth is expected for FY 2019. Thank you to all our generous sponsors and most notably to GMHBA who are now a significant part of supporting our club and fond friend. Our iconic Club and major events remain a strong drawcard for publicity (both internally and externally) providing great reach for our Club and event brands. This year, with the valuable help from our media partner Cozalive, we enjoyed an extraordinary amount of publicity across all media channels for the GMBHA Lorne Pier to Pub and of a new ilk. The Mack-Gregorio-SheppardCotter contest made for edge-of-your-seat interest and the Pallister-Brown-Kellsey ‘female battle for the line’ resulted in a second blitzing junior win.

26

"we enjoyed a very prosperous year..." The 2018 GMHBA Lorne Pier to Pub will be forever remembered as the year the juniors lead a changing of the guard not only in the GMHBA Pier to Pub, but also the thrilling win Jasmine Cash took out in the GMHBA Lorne 5000 and Andy Buchanan the GMHBA Lorne Mountain to Surf. The new emerging winners blew us out of the water, sent the media into a frenzy and resulted in exceptional media coverage. We were also very fortunate to have been selected by Dulux in December to be the 200th iconic surf club to be repainted. We were gifted an extraordinary complete external repaint of the Club, a shiny refurbished red Shark bell (thank you Heath Armstrong for helping restore) and a very clever iconic sign on the North Side of the Club that impressively stamps who we are. We have also been part of; a commercial and we hosted Channel 7 Sunrise on our beach with some spectacular shots of our nippers, patrol and boaties in action broadcasting our Club talent nationally. Thank you to Dulux and our members that enthusiastically supported this initiative. From a Club perspective, we gained media attention from a shark intruder in March. We received coverage of the Boaties at Elouera Beach, local press for carnivals and reporting of some extraordinary rescues by our members who are truly selfless heroes. Our social media channels have enjoyed a steady entertaining feed of Club news and an increased level of engagement from the community. Our President, Peter Murrihy popped up on television, radio stations and in newspapers representing our Club. There was a refresh of the Lorne Mower in September and editions steadily streamed out as our in-tray filled with newsworthy information.

"the media coverage was spectacular..." In the meantime, our Facebook account keeps our members up to date with current news, so don’t forget to follow us. Phase one of a much-needed Club website was launched in March, with iterations of functionality still to be added. Special thanks to Peter Williamson who has championed this vision for many years and emphatically ensured its inception. Thank you to our President, the Executive and members that have supported the Marketing, Publicity and Sponsorship function to ensure LSLSC has enjoyed a prosperous year. I am indebted to Tina Westacott for her guidance and adept administrative backing. John Takac has also provided important steadfast leadership, in a changing year and I have been incredibly grateful for his wise meticulous guidance. Thank you Keeley, Jaimee, Jenn, Issey and Harriet for your direct area support. Thank you to my wonderfully supportive patient family and friends who have enabled me to take on this huge volunteer assignment. Thank you LSLSC for the opportunity; it has been a remarkable ride.

NIPPERS The two weeks of summer from late December to early January was again the time to be on the beach for the ever popular and successful Lorne SLSC nippers program. Steve Atkinson and Jenn Brown stepped down after running the program for several years and handed to baton to Jo Pincus and Bec Read to manage the two-week intensive program. Jenn continued in the role of managing the nipper competition team. Just over 400 kids in all age groups, U7 – U13, and U14s, participated in a slightly extended program due to extreme weather later in the program. With the safety of participants and holiday makers a priority, the extreme weather in the 2nd week required adjustments to the timing of the program, resulting in the club championships being delivered over two days. This unfortunately meant some kids were not present on the Sunday of competition but everyone was understanding on the need for the program change. Assisting Jo and Bec was a large team of volunteers. With four dedicated age managers for each age group, plus water safety and the regular beach set up crew, the volunteer support for this program continues to be significant and strong. Without these dedicated volunteers the program would not happen.

"ever popular and ever fun ..." Nippers helps kids learn important surf skills and being safe at the beach, the safety aspect was further enhanced this year with specialist first aid training by Belinda Carne. Belinda’s engaging manner and specialist knowledge had kids in all the age groups learning and practicing important skills such as CPR. The diversity of skills and experience within the club network are a great asset to the program. During this off-season Jo will be working with Tina to review the registration process to ensure it is efficient for all – participants and administration. Bec is working with the “beach crew” to review the equipment needs to ensure the program can be as effective and as well serviced as possible. With interest in the program continuing to grow, it is important that the management and delivery is as efficient as possible for this ever popular, and fun, volunteer run program. events This season we have held some great events. It has been great to build leaders, welcome multicultural communities, celebrate milestones, and celebrate the end of another great season at the Lorne SLSC. Some of the highlights include celebrating our members achievements and awards at the last supper, unveiling our newest Surfboat; the ‘Big Kev’, hosting our first multicultural community day with the Sudanese community from Colac (see photo below), celebrating 70 years of Lifesaving in Lorne, and watching torn hamstrings, bashed pride, and great memories being made in our club championships. Summary of events - Leadership camp - Sudanese Community family day - Club 70th birthday - Dulux club house repaint - Victorian Masters Carnival - Senior and junior carnival - Club Champs - The Last Supper - Victorian IRB Championships There is always a team of people behind any great event, there are simply too many to mention here however, I would like to thank Tina Westacott and Samuel Aschhoff for their support behind the scenes in each and every event held throughout the season, and each and every member who came along and helped make all the events fantastic. See you on the sand! HEATH ARMSTRONG VICE PRESIDENT EVENTS
