Our spectacular backyard "FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA" The place between the Ruahine Ranges and the Tasman sea.

The snow covered Ruahine Ranges of winter will change with the seasons to beautiful bush covered mountains in the spring. Along with the northern Manawatū surrounds of Rangiwahia, and Apiti, you can explore stunning scenery of this area including farmland, sweeping white papa cliffs, deep gorges, ancient native forests and wetlands. The Rangitikei River is world famous for its exceptional wilderness fishing experience. Both rainbow and brown trout run throughout the river with trophy fish caught in the upper reaches. The river winds its way along the western boundary of Manawatū district, escaping into the Tasman Sea at Tangimoana beach - one of Manawatū's favourite whitebaIting, fishing and camping spots. Manawatū’s gorgeous coastline has its own spectacular charm on the best blue sky days and the wild west coast days. Most days you'll be able to see Kapiti Island and, if you're lucky, the South Island and Mount Taranaki. Palmerston North Surf Life Saving Club has been patrolling Himatangi beach since the early 1950’s with a strong following of members helping to keep our beach safe.

Each summer the local life saver volunteers patrol on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from December to February. A Regional Lifeguard Service provides a week day patrol for six weeks from about mid December until the end of January through the school holiday period. MoreFM’s BIG DIG annual Wellington Anniversary weekend fundraiser raises funds for the local beach life savers. Award winning Himatangi Beach Holiday Park offers a range of accommodation, from camping sites to fully self-contained cabins and all the facilities you need. Take The Country Road where you will discover the real New Zealand. Here are journeys where off the beaten-track excursions allow you to discover hidden places and tucked away treasures ranging from convivial country cafes and pubs, For an overnighter, weekender or staycation, there's no shortage of fantastic accommodation from country lodges, B&B's, farm-stays and camping spots. Manawatū District is a motorhome friendly destination.

Explore Manawatū district this spring and summer and you’ll discover the awe-inspiring power of nature, just down the road.

At the heart of it all "LIVE, WORK & PLAY"

He aha te mea nui o te ao -What is the most important thing in the world? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata - It is the people, it is the people, it is the people Our people are making the Manawatū district a great place to live, work and play. Locals and visitors enjoy our 14 charming country villages and friendly Feilding's bustling town centre with it's great café culture and shopping experience. In the pursuit of happiness, here you can discover the perfect balance for work-life commitments and towncountry living where the pace of life is easy. Locals come together and visitors are drawn in from our neighbouring regions and across the country to share in our great events and gatherings such as the Central District Field Days, Kimbolton Sculpture Festival and the annual upcoming spring Cross Hills Gardens and Country Fair. Manawatū is at the heart of it all and the central gateway to the regions. Just 15 minutes down the road to Palmerston North City and 45 minutes to Whanganui City. A couple of hours drive north to Lake Taupō, east to Hawkes Bay, west to Taranaki and south to the capital city Wellington. There's hundreds of clubs, groups and organisations that build the framework of the community with their unstoppable tribe of volunteers creating plenty to get involved with. Our people have cultivated a strong social fabric with relationships that are deep and enduring. Along with our central location and affordable homes, first class schools and learning centres, a consolidated Health Care Centre with 15 GP’s under one roof, and outstanding retirement villages and elder care facilities, Feilding is the perfect place for families. Manawatū District is a great place to work and be in business. Smart and connected organisations continue to drive our progress. The legacy of commerce in our town started in 1873 with farming, and we’ve been helping to feed and grow our country ever since. Today our industries are as diverse as our landscape, creating jobs for all. Farming is the lifeblood of the Manawatū District and home to many of New Zealand’s most diverse and innovative food producers creating a hive of industry for people.

Uniquely, the largest stock sale yards in the Southern Hemisphere brings NZ's primary industry smack into the middle of our CBD every week! Our farmers have created an agricultural mecca producing a food basket for the nation and beyond. Manufacturers, biologists, exporters, national farm suppliers, agri-service businesses and international farm machinery have created a hub in Feilding to service this important centre for agricultural industry. RNZAF Ohakea is a major employer in our district with over 1000 personnel and contractors working on base at NZ’s third largest airfield, continuing as a significant contributor to our economy and community. Personnel numbers are expected to increase to 1,200 by 2023 to accommodate the transfer of No. 5 Squadron from Whenuapai. We have a strong force of locally owned and operated businesses, professional services and an army of trades and services helping to keep us humming. Global brands, supermarkets, real estate, food and hospitality are all major contributors to our economy too. Feilding’s Ultra-Fast Broadband makes it possible for small business to compete globally and is providing outstanding work-from-home opportunities here. Our diverse and innovative businesses reach far beyond the district and nation's boundaries to serve their customers. You too, can join our 31,700 residents across our beautiful district and call our big hearted place, home.

FEILDING REAL ESTATE MARKET When my Dad, Trevor commenced his Real Estate Agency in 1969, a typical near new house in Andrew Street, was selling for around $7,000. We had just changed to decimal currency, from pounds, shillings and pence! Two houses sold in Andrew Street in early 2015 for $178,000 and $199,000. The property that sold for $178,000, sold again in November 2020 for $521,500, and another Andrew Street property sold in March 2021 for $620,000. This tells the story of the Feilding residential real estate market succinctly and well. I have worked in the Feilding property market as a Registered Valuer and Real Estate Agent since 1983, after 5 years in Wellington as a Valuer Cadet and Valuer. I have seen long periods where the market was stagnant, and some shorter periods where values fell. It all comes back to supply and demand. For quite a long period, values were dropping or stagnant as our population declined, Feilding was drab, and we were potentially another dying rural town. Thanks to the efforts of Feilding Promotion, Council, Keep Feilding Beautiful and other organisations, Feilding became a popular place to live, and started growing again. We are currently in a sustained period of growth, with shortage of supply and strong demand for houses. The last few years has had the most extreme market that I have experienced. Individual Agents or Salespeople currently typically have a listing or 2 or 3, which sell quickly. There was a period in the early 1990’s when I had 300 house listings in and around Feilding, and hardly any sold. Let’s not go back to those days, but a slower growth market would be preferable.

YOU TRAVEL FEILDING You Travel Feilding is a local, privately owned travel company. Managing director Ros Chapman knows that being one of just 1500 out of 5000 travel agents remaining nationwide post Covid - is no mean feat. “We continue to provide five-star service to new and returning clients who wish to travel within New Zealand and internationally - unlike our two corporate competitors who have shut their doors under the Covid environment. We took great pride in recovering all our clients when the world shut down and we continue to provide local and international travel during the pandemic.” For generations Kiwis did not consider that the journey getting to or returning from their holiday destinations, to be part of their vacation.

“This has never been our view, not only in how and which way you move across the globe, but how safe it is. We specialise in presenting the best options, competitive with the internet, while considering the new and additional caution associated with the Covid threat over travel routes.” With a promise that “we are with you all the way”, whether it is for business, adventure, enjoyment, or just for the pure pleasure of travel -one of life’s great experiences. Ros and her friendly Feilding team invite you to pop into chat. “Let us show you why our doors are still open.” WE-9040984AI

FEILDING MULTICULTURAL GROUP The Feilding Multicultural group has been in existence for over a decade, supporting immigrants, migrants, and refugees in Feilding. We have a lot of people here from all over the world without wider whanau in Feilding, and we help those people meet others for mutual support and friendship. It started as a morning tea group, and that’s what it still is, we meet every Tuesday morning at the Feilding library, or at Spring Cafe if that’s not available. We have links to English Language Partners for lessons if needed, access to community gardens, and we do Christmas Parades and some trips away, to see more of beautiful New Zealand Aotearoa. We have our members a JP, who is happy to help with document witnessing, and others that volunteer for all kind of social services. Every so often we do weekend picnics or evening potluck teas to share food.

THE FEILDING COMMUNITY PATROL You may have seen the Feilding Community Patrol’s Toyota Rav driving around the streets of Feilding and the surrounding districts or having a presence at local events. Those people you see in the car are trained volunteers giving up their time to make Feilding a safer community. The patrol works very closely with the local Police using their guidance and training, as they are their extra eyes and ears in the community to help reduce crime in the district. The patrol coverage includes the industrial areas of the town, the CBD, schools, parks, churches and many urban roads and streets. As well as covering the township of Feilding the boundaries of the patrol include Sanson, Rongotea, Bunnythorpe, Ashhurst, Colyton, Cheltenham, Kimbolton, Halcombe and everywhere in between.

Community members who would like to join the patrol would receive a very warm welcome. Training to join the patrol is not an arduous experience. It basically involves an interview, Police Vet, ten straightforward training modules that can be completed online and finally practical experience patrolling in the patrol’s vehicle with a trainer. Once you are fully trained you and a partner (patrollers never go out by themselves) are ready to roll. Once you are trained as a patroller the amount of time you give to patrolling is largely up to you. The writer of this piece goes out once a month generally on the same day from 8.30pm-10.30pm with his patrol partner. Some patrollers patrol more than once a month, some prefer the afternoons while the community events that a patroller attend is largely up to him/her. You will be a member of a great team, have a

Feilding Brass was formed in 1883, and is a C Grade Brass Band based in Feilding, New Zealand. The group rehearses weekly, and players come from all over the Manawatū, and even from Horowhenua! The band performs at regional and national contests, at concerts, in community events, and with other community groups. Their repertoire is wide and draws from genres including pop/rock, swing, cinema, classical, modern original brass band compositions, as well as more traditional brass band material such as marches and hymns. Feilding Brass proudly serves the community on Anzac Day where they appear at Feilding, Sanson and Ashhurst services, over Christmas time in the annual Feilding parade, and in other musical events through the year. They also have a training band to help our younger or less experienced players grow in confidence. When they are not playing at the Esplanade, at a Beerfest, a Tattoo or one of their annual community concerts the band can be found online at their website.

RIDING FOR THE DISABLED The therapeutic benefit of interactions between people and animals is well known. This kaupapa is formalised in the case of horses at the Manawatu- Riding for the Disabled facility, situated in Awahuri Road Feilding, located opposite the Awahuri/Kitchener Reserve. Comprising nearly six hectares of land, the facilities include an indoor arena measuring 60x30 metres with lighting, covered yards and an administration block with a shower room and small kitchen area. While the massive arena is available for hire, the RDA activities take place three mornings a week, during school term time.

Riders have a wide range of disabilities from physical, being wheelchair bound, through to severe cases of autism and everything in between. While participation is not limited to children, there are weight limits because most of the current horses are ponies meaning most of the riders are children. The volunteer requirements are quite onerous needing up to three people per rider, requiring someone leading and up to two side-walkers. Each session also needs a coach and a person assisting with arrivals. The value for the volunteers is enormous when seeing the benefits the riders get from their participation. “When a rider deemed non-verbal says a recognisable ‘whoa Pally’ (to stop his pony), the reasons one is there are reinforced,” volunteer Harvey Bell recounted.

MANCHESTER HOUSE A ‘for’ community organization, nurturing resilient individuals and families empowered to respond to change. For almost 50 years Manchester House has offered vital services to ensure the wellbeing of their community. This is something “not set to change” according to executive manager Ann Williamson, as the organization evolves to ensure adults, children and seniors have access to food, support and information and are resilient and thriving in a changeable world. Manchester House offers support and services from its various venues. The Social Services Hub at 68 Aorangi Street, is open weekdays and offers on-demand assistance including

emergency food support, family/social work support, counselling, budgeting and addiction support. The Senior Hub on 14 Bowen Street meets the needs of local seniors. These services are supported by profits from the vibrant, eclectic Manchester House Opshop at 115 Fergusson Street and ASAP, our popular before and after school programme on 9 Grey St. The organization proudly employs dedicated, professional staff to walk alongside community members requesting our partnership on their journey. We strive to make sure all who walk through our doors are treated with warmth, respect, and compassion.

2021 has already been a busy year for Manawatū District Council so far. By the time this magazine goes to print, we’ll have signed off on the ManawatūMeke 10 Year Plan and completed pre-engagement on the Representation Review. Prior to that we sought feedback on the District Plan Review and the Feilding Town Centre Refresh. There are many projects on the go as well, such as the Ōhākea Rural Water Scheme, the new Resource Recovery Centre, wastewater centralisation, various roading improvements and maintenance work and construction of the new Mangaweka Bridge. One project we know will excite little kids and parents alike is the new playground at Kōwhai Park. The playground has been developed in part thanks to local kids who submitted feedback

W I N T E R

on what they wanted to be able to play on. This includes features such as tower blocks, a climbing wall, slides, a flying fox, swings, and musical equipment. The old playground that was located next to South Street has been refurbished (including new paint and a nanoclear protective coating) and moved to the location where the new play equipment is. This will make it easier for parents to keep an eye on all their children and the under 5’s playground is now fully fenced. Safety matting is in place to ensure that kids have as soft a landing as possible should they fall. Once the playground is open there will be some remedial work still happening, such as landscaping and planting, as part of stage two. If you’re a local business or organisation that would like to make a contribution towards the installation of sun shade sails before summer comes, please contact us.

Every second Friday of the month, Manawatū District Council has a stall at the Feilding Farmers Market, where residents are able to talk to Council staff and sometimes elected members about what’s happening at Council and in the wider community.

Listen in to our show ‘What Have You Done For Us Lately?’ on Manawatū People’s Radio (MPR). We talk to Council staff, elected members and people from the community about what’s happening in our District, including events, projects, key dates and anything else we think is important to residents. Broadcast on Wednesdays at 9:30am on 999AM, or you can wait until after the episode has aired and stream it from the MPR website. www.accessmanawatu.co.nz).

You can talk to us about any of the projects we’re working on, discuss topics that we’re consulting on or bring up other issues. We often have written material that you can take away to read in your own time and sometimes we have lollies to give away too! We’d love to have a chat with you so call past if you can
