There are two camping grounds in Tōtara Reserve, one large site, Kererū, which is adjacent to Camp Rangi Wood's accommodation blocks and hall/kitchen, and one smaller site, Kahikatea which is across the road. If you are coming from Feilding, once you reach the Tōtara Reserve turn-off (Pohangina Valley East Road), keep travelling north until you get to the Highland Christian Camp then veer off to the left. Amenities on site include toilets, showers, electric BBQs, a 'back to roots' adventure playground, powered and unpowered tent sites, and river access. The numerous bush walks remain while these improvements were undertaken and other camp improvements, including water upgrades, increased pest control and biodiversity programmes will continue to be made. Nestled in the Pohangina Valley and just 35km from Feilding lays Tōtara Reserve Regional Park; one of the best and most accessible examples of the ancient native lowland forest that once covered much of the region. Covering 340 ha of bush, the reserve offers a wide range of attractions for daytrippers, weekenders and holiday makers, as a gentle introduction to nature and a safe way of experiencing ‘wild’ New Zealand. This Reserve is a much-prized area of bush with a Podocarp forest covering hills and valleys. Predominant trees include Tōtara, Matai, Rimu and Kahikatea. There are also some Black Beech trees and Dicksonia Squarrosa tree ferns. Native Birds to be found in the reserve include Tui, Fantail (Piwakawaka) Wax eye, Morepork, Bellbird, Kingfisher and Kereru (Wood Pigeon). There are a good variety of long and short walks within the reserve, which is also a popular camping and picnic spot, with plenty of facilities available. Kahikatea Walk is an easy 20 minute walk, and is a great introduction to a broadleaved forest, suitable for young and old to explore. As the name of the walk suggests, mature kahikatea are the stars in this reserve. Lie on your back, look up at the canopy and admire these majestic forest giants. From walking tracks and swimming holes, to the native wildlife and flora that is scattered all over the park, here is a place in the Manawatū District that gives an opportunity to experience the real New Zealand.

The Rangitīkei River

"PUTAI NGAHERE DOMAIN - VINEGAR HILL" Manawatū Districts stunning riverside escape.

Putai Ngahere Domain or Vinegar Hill, as it is mostly known, is one of the region’s most popular and spectacular picnic and camping reserves, located alongside the majestic Rangitīkei River, where a mighty 300 year old totara tree looks over the grounds as a guardian. The bush entrance to this 30.84 reserve features giant redwood, totara and other native species. The reserve provides for a range of recreation activities including swimming, fishing, white-water rafting and canoeing. It is a popular holiday camping spot for families and large groups with three main camping areas but people can camp where they wish. There are showers (cold) available but no BBQ's. Flat, grassy, non-powered sites with plenty of tree shelter, border the river, which has great swimming holes. Here you will find relaxed camping at its very best. The majestic Rangitikei River snakes its way along the western boundary of the Manawatū District’s northern reaches from high up on the central plateau down to Tangimoana Beach where its spills into the Tasman Sea. It has cut spectacular gorges on its path, cliffs up to 200 metres high provide dramatic backdrops to a wide range of rapids and pools. Most of these rapids are Grade 2, ideal for family rafting adventures and an excellent learning ground for Whitewater Kayaking. The Rangitikei River also features a section of Grade 5 White-water, the best half day or two day white-water trip in the world! More water adventures are well worth exploring at Awastone.co.nz

The popular Feildings Farmers Market is now in its 15th year, having started in April 2005 with just nine stallholders, and now has 40 stalls in the summer and 30 in winter. Heritage

140 Years

"FEILDING SALEYARDS: EST. 1880"

Farming is the lifeblood of the Manawatū district and you’ll find it’s pulse beats firmly

in the heart of the CBD at the Feilding Saleyards. For reasons no longer known, Jack Stevens and Colonel Gorton decided to round up some cattle and auction them in the stockyards next to the Denbigh Hotel. One hundred cattle were sold. On May 24, 1880, the stock yards next to the Denbigh Hotel became the Feilding Saleyards. What started that day has become a regular ritual, unbroken for 140 years, a vital part of New Zealand's primary industry, pulsating in the heart of Feilding. In 1902, Feilding claimed a North Island record for the

1902

number of sheep yarded at sale - 42,000. (Photo 1902) Regular fortnightly sales were later expanded to weekly sales with four firms involved; Gorton & Sons, Abraham & Williams, NZ Loan & Mercantile Agency and Dalgety, Buckley & Co. In 1920 Wright Stephenson & Co merged with Abraham & Williams Ltd. The Manawatū Auctioneers' association was formed in 1907 and a record 80,000 sheep were yarded that year. Today the saleyards continue under the ownership of PGG Wrightson and Carrfields. The saleyards comprise 350 sheep pens, 140 cattle pens and an additional 45 deer pens which were built in the 1980's. Around 80,000 cattle and 750,000 sheep are sold annually, based on current livestock values that sees more than $170 million changing hands between vendors and purchasers. Feilding sale yards are the largest in New Zealand and one of the largest in Australasia.

Discover

A world class museum "THE COACH HOUSE"

A massive place, like no other, for the whole family to explore, learn and enjoy.

When you step through the doors of The Coach House Museum, darkness falls and silence is broken by the sound of birdsong. Kokako, Huia, Kereru and Tui are among the 16 native birds that will greet you. They all once flourished in the dense forest of Totara, Kowhai and Kahikatea trees in Aorangi (Feilding) Manawatū at that time. This is where the journey begins through this vast museum, and it is vast, so allow plenty of time for your visit. A walk though, shows in great detail, the stories of those hard working families who came to settle in New Zealand with dreams of a better life for their families. Sheer grit, sweat and tears mixed with determination, innovation and belief. It’s all on display here. Fascinating stories are told of local people and the vehicles they used to develop Manawatū into the thriving rural heartland it is today. A rare collection of horse-drawn vehicles, vintage tractors and farm machinery and equipment fill this museum to the brim with wonderful tales of days gone by. Impressively, The Coach House is run by a dedicated team 120 passionate volunteers, mostly retirees. They welcome visitors in and organise group bookings with catering packages that are enjoyed in the sunny foyer by prior arrangement. This is a place in which stories about the good old days come thick and fast. A place for reminiscing and sharing a trip down memory lane... Intrique "KIMBOLTON SCULPTURE FESTIVAL, 27 MARCH" Amazingly resourceful, creative and intriguing sculptures, dozens of artists and craft stalls.

The momentum is growing for the annual Kimbolton Sculpture Festival. The event committee has added in a brand new category which will open the doors to even more sculptures. The NZ Rural Sculpture Open Award will allow sculptors with a contemporary edge to get involved. Committee member Carly Thomas said the award will see more scope for different subject matter and could bring a whole new outlook to the rural theme. “We want the festival to be inclusive to those who may want to step away from the more rurally themed sculptures. Creativity can have a free rein and it will be exciting to see what comes in. The prize money kete has grown bigger to accommodate the new award and the first prize winner will go home with $2000, while the runner-up will be $500 richer. The entries will also be eligible for the People’s Choice Award. There are more than 20 award categories in the festival, ranging from the Creative Cocky Award - which encourages rural people to get on board - through to a whole raft of kid’s awards. There is a

prize pool of

over $15,000. The Kimbolton Sculpture Festival first began in 2018, driven by a small group of volunteers who wanted to see something big and positive happen in their little rural village. The challenge is to be creative with recycled objects found around the farm and the ethos is about the wellness benefits of making art. The festival was a hit and it has continued to grow and evolve. “We are always thinking of new ways to make the festival even better”, said Thomas, “and the new award is part of that growth, inviting more people in to make even more incredible sculptures.”
