"NEW BEGINNINGS AND GROWTH" Feilding & District Promotion, supporting local business, local economy and our local community. Spring, the season of new beginnings and growth. This year has been one of learning, where we have had the opportunity to reflect on what is truly important. Some have been forced to take a break, restock and change tact for the future. Our focus at Feilding & District Promotion is to provide support to local businesses and residents through grassroots community and economic development. We are here to provide business support and development by facilitating events for businesses to network, such as Business After 5’s; linking local businesses with other agencies such as the Central Economic Development Agency (CEDA), the Manawatū Chamber of Commerce; facilitation of seminars and workshops for SMEs; supporting businesses with their Covid-19 recovery plan; promotion of our local businesses to encourage residents and visitors to Choose Manawatū. If we haven’t met yet, please flick me an email or give me a bell. I’d love to visit your business and learn your story. The best thing about living in a small rural community is the relationships we can make and the support we can provide one another. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone that I have been in contact with so far in my first six months. The welcome and kindness shown to me reinforces why we are known as Friendly Feilding.

Celebrating 140 Years

"FEILDING SALEYARDS: EST.1880" Farming is the lifeblood of the Manawatū district and you’ll find it’s pulse beats firmly in the heart of the CBD at the Feilding Saleyards. For reasons no longer known, Jack Stevens and Colonel Gorton decided to round up some cattle and auction them in the stockyards next to the Denbigh Hotel. One hundred cattle were sold. On May 24, 1880, the stock yards next to the Denbigh Hotel became the Feilding Saleyards. (Photo above) What started that day has become a regular ritual, unbroken for 140 years, a vital part of New Zealand's primary industry, pulsating in the heart of Feilding. In 1902, Feilding claimed a North Island record for the

1902

number of sheep yarded at sale - 42,000. (Photo 1902) Regular fortnightly sales were later expanded to weekly sales with four firms involved; Gorton & Sons, Abraham & Williams, NZ Loan & Mercantile Agency and Dalgety, Buckley & Co. In 1920 Wright Stephenson & Co merged with Abraham & Williams Ltd. The Manawatū Auctioneers' association was formed in 1907 and a record 80,000 sheep were yarded that year. Today the saleyards continue under the ownership of PGG Wrightson and Carrfields. The saleyards comprise 350 sheep pens, 140 cattle pens and an additional 45 deer pens which were built in the 1980's. Around 80,000 cattle and 750,000 sheep are sold annually, based on current livestock values that sees more than $170 million changing hands between vendors and purchasers. Feilding sale yards are the largest in New Zealand and one of the largest in Australasia. Visit www.feildingsaleyards.co.nz FEILDING & MANAWATŪ DISTRICT

"A CORE BUSINESS OF ACADEMICS" Feilding High School -where our eight school values underpin everything we do.

FAHS Feilding High School has a proud history of academic, sporting and cultural excellence. The ‘A’ in our name reflects our agricultural heritage and references our earlier name – Feilding Agricultural High School. Founded in 1921, we started by focussing on agriculture which remains a key aspect of our identity. We have two farms and the largest Teen Ag club in New Zealand. Over the years we have morphed into a more mainstream co-ed school offering a wide range of subjects, sporting opportunities and cultural activities. We have a national reputation for producing outstanding rugby players and for winning national canoe-polo titles but we offer all mainstream sports – and some minor ones, such as fencing. Our special character is underpinned by our hostel, L.J.Wild House – the name acknowledging our first Principal. Our hostel students add much to all aspects of school life.
