ADORE HAIR & BEAUTY A

elax the mind, soothe the soul, lift the spirit, and e

escape the world. esca

Adore Hair & Beauty is a warm and friendly salon, and Ad with 12 years in business owner Alex Toms has grown the team to five creative stylists and six internationally qualified beauty therapists, offering a full range of hairdressing, cosmetic brow tattooing and beauty therapy services - all under the one roof.

Alex is on the Board of Trustees at Manchester Street School -a proud Enviro School. “This opened my eyes to what else we could do to help the environment and reduce waste in the salon, and so we joined their TerraCycle Recycling program. I have been blown away by the amount of, what we thought was waste, that we can now recycle through the TerraCycle program. For each kilogram of used hair and beauty aerosol packaging that you send to TerraCycle, Manchester Street School will receive $1 in TerraCycle Points, which can be redeemed for a payment. Once collected, sorted, cleaned and palletised it is all recycled into new products, and metal materials are sent for smelting and conversion to new alloys. Amazingly enough, this hasn’t added any extra work for the team, but now sustainable practices are the norm in our salon.”

AUNTY JO JO’S TAKEAWAYS rder online - good old

export grade fish and products. Jody Brownlee had always wanted to own a shop to provide good old Kiwi style fish and chips with a focus on providing real homemade hamburgers too, so two years ago she opened Aunty Jo Jo’s. Jody’s mother Lorraine Malone was struggling to secure employment, even after applying for over 0 jobs, so Jody continued as a full time Corrections Officer at Manawatu Prison and Lorraine took control of the shop which created plenty of work for her. Aunty Jo Jo’s was just six months into trading when the first lockdown struck. This was a very daunting experience -but they pulled through and didn’t look back! Their quality, cleanliness, seven “wonderful staff” and all the positive reviews have contributed immensely to making their business a success. “We believe that we fall into the business innovative category because of our ability to source quality export grade fish and other quality products. We make our own prime beef special recipe meat patties and trimmings topped off with homemade mayonnaise. We also offer healthy options with our popular salads and wraps. We are the only fish and chip shop in Feilding that offers online ordering, which we implemented during the Covid lockdown -and continues today.”

PE participation tici in schools is decreasing while screen time and obesity are increasing and becoming a problem.

Footsteps Max Hopf and Matt Wells have invented an approach to tackle these problems by integrating sport and technology and taking it to all primary schools in the region. Making sports more enjoyable and relatable for kids was overdue. Now in 2021, Matt and Max say that has all changed, and they are receiving amazing feedback. Funded by Sport NZ to run the program in over 1 schools until Feb 2022. Over the last 12 months, they have been to many schools in the region, from Highbury to Mt. Biggs taking 1-2 hour sessions, training around 80 kids in - classes a day. The duo are super excited to continue building relationships with schools and sporting organizations to help make every kid active! “To create a sustainable program that is not only innovative but also transformative to the PE landscape in NZ, we are creating an online course for schools, teachers, parents and teacher aides to upskill. We want to be a part of the conversation and can see us advising school boards on choice of equipment as well as taking Footsteps to every school in the country.” P: 022 645 7472 www.footsteps.org.nz

FUN FOOTBALL FOR LITTLE PEOPLE

Passionate about de eloping the s ills and talents of tamari i.

Fun Football for the Little People started nine years ago when Paddy McLoughlin saw a need for young tamariki to participate in sport and exercise to encourage a healthier, fitter lifestyle for them and their whanau. It started out with Paddy and a bag of footballs going into centres and running classes. Eventually, Adam Rose was brought into the business, and together they work with many centres throughout the Manawatū. The team is passionate about tamariki, running holiday programmes and after-school classes, as well as full-term programmes, and they’ve fundraised for local children by building and raf ing a few pirate ships. At their busiest times they can work with over 1000 tamariki a week between them. “Our aim is to provide those tamariki with the chance to discover inner abilities and talents, promote healthy living and allow a safe and productive environment for children to develop positive relationships and social skills. Our programme also helps tamariki develop leadership skills, listening and processing skills, and linking numeracy and literacy to our games and activities. We offer a holistic and fulfilling programme to our tamariki.” Strong connections to local sports clubs often see the tamariki they teach go on to play not just football but all sports. Gail’s is commit committed to a long-term sustainability journey, where their tamariki students connect with and explore the environment, then plan, design and take action in their local places in collaboration with their communities. They’ve introduced many initiatives and practices, included conducting three separate waste audits to learn how to reduce their centres waste. Changes included litter-less lunches which reduced their waste from four bins per week to 1.5 bins, while food scraps go to compost and a worm farm which are used in the sharing garden to produce fresh vegies. Gail’s staff and whanau cared for a section of Kitchener Park for over a year removing weeds on a monthly working bee, and they presented a power-point to MDC on waste reduction and specifically the potential of finding a sustainable way to deal with disposable nappies. Gail’s Libby Ellery says, “We have made a significant positive reduction in our environmental impact however the most important change I believe we have made and want to continue to make is in our children learning to love and respect our planet and know how to care for papatuanuku, to make being kaitiaki a part of their way of being. George and Ellen Bartlett run Gemel Trustt ict Farms. They’ve been farming in the district antly for the past 0 years. They are predominantly dairy with some sheep and beef and also some agricultural contracting around the area.

They’ve had and have a great team working for them over the years helping to make the business what it is today, and were thrilled to be nominated as a Sustainability Improver. Wanting a farm they can leave to the next generation in a better state than they found it, has always been a driver for them. They have lived on their Stanway farm for the past 1 years. “We have worked with Horizons Regional Council planning on setting aside land to plant trees on and have since planted over 20,000 native trees and several thousand Eucalypts for shade and shelter for animals. The trees are starting to really grow now and it is exciting to see.” They are on a district water scheme which is not an unlimited supply. “We are very frugal in our water use. We recycle wash water to wash yards and have water saving devices where possible. We split calve the herd so we can milk half the cows through the winter which helps to pay for the other half to graze off-farm to lessen soil damage and protect pasture. THE HERB FARM

Pioneers in holistic sustainability. The Herb Farm’s founder Lynn Kirkland was a visionary in sustainability and natural therapy. Her passion for herbal remedies and their ability to positively impact health and wellbeing led her to create The Herb Farm in 1 - a company that celebrates the natural therapeutic qualities of herbs. Fusing the power of nature with the potency of traditional knowledge, a new skincare and healthcare vision was brought to life -creating beautiful, powerful, all-natural formulas that feel like healthy food to hungry skin. Being used to herbs of the finest quality, grown ethically, organically and sustainably in their own gardens, they continued to grow their healing, restorative and beauty-boosting skincare range and provide resources for people to make informed decisions on the products they were purchasing. Sustainability has been at their core, constantly striving to improve, and ensuring that they leave the smallest ecological footprint possible. This year The Herb Farm introduced four new changes to products and processes. These changes include the introduction of more sustainable product packaging. A Return our Empties’ initiative, an opportunity for customers to shop for products Box-Free’, as well as a collaboration with Trees That Count’ where every single The Herb Farm purchase worldwide contributes to the planting of native trees and the improvement of the environment. 6 ro e oad, el in T: 06 326 633 www.herbfarm.co.nz

TOTALLY BALMY

S incare products with simple, natural ingredients.

Totally Balmy was dreamed into existence by Sharon Holmes who had an addiction to lip balm, and a resistance to using commercial baby products on her first-born child. Lip balm and baby balm were the first products she ever made. “Even though I had a business degree, I knew little about running a business.” It was a steep learning curve for Sharon who taught herself everything from formulating recipes, blending essential oils, making cold process soap, using ero, marketing, finding suppliers, gauging what the market wants, and working out prices. “My business started due to my family’s skincare needs, but along the way my love and passion for sustainability grew.” Totally Balmy NZ sells a range of handmade skincare and zero waste products. “My products help you to reduce the chemicals in your skincare, while decreasing the amount of single use plastic you use in your daily life. In the last 12 months I have made big strides towards more sustainable business practices. All parcels I send are home compostable and recyclable, I buy from NZ based suppliers where possible, and I support an NZ based initiative called Carbon Click’ to help offset carbon emissions.”

YOU TRAVEL FEILDING

For unique and personalised experiences. ou Travel’s managing director Ros Chapman considers innovation an interesting word. For her, at the outbreak of the Covid 1 Pandemic, it meant adapting her business to provide a better, more inclusive service to the travelling community rather than continuing as previously done. “With many confused clients wishing to return home from overseas, or those wishing to travel for very personal reasons, we found emotions running high and patience running low. Keeping our knowledge up to date meant hours of trolling through the constantly changing international rules, regulations, and restrictions. There were many heart-breaking stories out there and remaining focused was not always an easy task.” While competitors were closing or retreating to work at home as travel brokers, ou Travel Feilding would trim its business to a point where it could manage the negative impact the pandemic had upon cash ow.

As a personal relationship business first and foremost where face-to-face discussions are valued, closing the doors was simply not an option for Ros. “If some were to ask us what innovative solutions we applied, we would say the direct application of business and specific market knowledge are factors, but, offering a genuinely caring and very personal environment was the greater of them all.” 27 anchester Square, Feilding T: 06 323 667 www.youtra el.co.nz feilding

WORKBRIDGE

onnecting employers with jobsee ers for 90 years.

Brett Nicholson from Le Courier and Kate Balfour from Balfour Cleaning get it, so do many other regional employers who are keen to make the most of a growing economic boom. Like the rest of the country, local employers have been hampered by a chronic skills and labour shortage. In Manawatū, there are 1000 job vacancies and not enough candidates to fill them. Brett, Kate, and others utilise Workbridge, an iconic organisation that has been successfully connecting employers with jobseekers for close to 0 years. Workbridge jobseekers are disabled, have health conditions or injuries. All have valuable skills as Brett has discovered, if you give them the chance and a little bit of support you can get able, hard-working, and loyal employees in return. Brett has taken on several Workbridge jobseekers. “Don’t count them out until you meet them and get a feel for what the person is like,” he says. “And let them show you what they can do.” Workbridge offers a free service that matches employers’ needs with the right candidate and skills and provides a placement that is effective and sustainable. Samantha, Kasia and Warwick at Workbridge are mobile, whether you are in the Manawatū, Horowhenua or Tararua, they can meet with you to P: 050 5 5 create a free tailored recruitment plan. www.wor bridge.co.nz FEILDING & MANAWATŪ DISTRICT - 26 - SPRING 2021

BAYLEYS MICHAEL FORD Summertime, and the li in is easy.

49 anchester Street, Feilding : 027 542 4707 P: 06 323 0333 E: michael.ford@bayleys.co.nz

Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Sarah aughan, Nora Jones and other magnificent singers have all sung this beautiful song. It was written in the 1 0’s and has been covered 25,000 times. The title words certainly resonate with Kiwi’s, who are now holding out for an easy livin’ summer, according to Bayleys Michael Ford. “We embrace easy living, with our barbeques and relaxed dining outdoors on patios, balconies, decks, terraces, courtyards and lawn. Home sellers should make the most of their outdoor living areas, by sprucing them up, and having them well presented. Along with kitchen and bathroom, the outdoor living presentation is at the top of the list for good presentation. Do any decking boards need replacing or anything need a paint What is the route like between the kitchen and outdoor living area. If it is too long or awkward for carrying food, drinks, plates, cutlery etc, it is less likely to get used. If you haven’t got an outdoor living area, you could consider creating one, and it doesn’t have to cost much. This could be a good project for Spring. If you want any advice, just give me a call or drop me an email or text message.” Kind regards, Michael Ford areinz anziv spinz.

in a changing landscape NATIONAL DRIVER TRAINING CENTRE New Zealand’s premier driver training facility

The need for innovation and strong relationships management is very evident as we manoeuvre our collective way through the Covid-19 pandemic. It is evident that the landscape will remain lumpy during the next quarter but that does not mean that we cannot successfully run events within the government directed guidelines. The Manfeild Park team remains committed to finding solutions for our clients that are keen to host events on Circuit Chris Amon, in our large multi-purpose Stadium or utilising our expansive green spaces. We encourage new and existing clients to have a conversation with us. We wish to express our very grateful thanks to the community partners that assisted Manfeild Park to open New Zealand’s very first drive thru Covid-19 vaccination centre during the August 2021 Level 4 lockdown. The way our Feilding and the District community came together, committed to keeping our community safe, shows what an amazing place in which we all reside. We have a “can do” attitude that works quickly and we leave no stone unturned in showing how nimble and agile we can be in a collaborative way. Manfeild Park continues to be so proud to play its part in this important community initiative. We are incredibly proud of the new surface we are re-building on our outdoor equestrian arenas and have hosted events where riders and horses are enjoying the re-emergence of a layered cushion for their dressage and show jumping events. We will be doing more infrastructure work in our covered yards in coming months.

For more information please contact our events team on: experience@manfeild.co.nz, by phone on (06) 3237444 or please visit our website www.manfeild.co.nz Having completed the capital build of our new National Driver Training Centre (NDTC) back in June 2021, we are definitely seeing increased demand for our Class 1-6 driver training services. We have engaged a number of new contracted driving instructors but with growing demand, we are keen to source additional contractors from the wider region. We are thrilled to be partnering with Fulton Hogan to launch the Infrastructure Skills Centre in early November. This will be the first step to a future for individuals keen on a career in civil construction. We continue to expand our range of forklift courses as there is significant industry demand in this space. Class 1 driving lessons and associated courses are also popular. We have packaged a new offering for secondary schools that we will be launching in 2022 which will include the scope for driver training in Class 6. If you are interested in our driver training as an individual, a corporate, a school or a community based client then please contact Adrian Larkin – Manager, National Driver Training Centre via email: adrian@ndtc.co.nz or mobile: 027 455-5578.

THE EGG PROJECT

Fresh free-range and certified organic eggs to your door.

The Egg Project is based in coastal Manawatū where owners Pip Chrystall and Brian Kennerley produce both free-range and certified organic eggs.

“We have a gate-to-door delivery service that delivers the freshest, most ethically produced, golden globes directly to your door all over the Manawatū! We can also supply commercial customers. We are super proud of what we do in regard to our extremely high levels of animal welfare standards and believe that to get an eggceptional egg, you need healthy, happy hens! We have only ever farmed free-range, never cage, barn or colony. Our hens live a life of luxury basking in daylight, pecking around under the pine nut trees.” The Egg Project also offers a social enterprise option to work with schools, sports groups, early childcare centres, churches, businesses and community groups and anyone else who may be interested in fundraising while eating a staple nutritious whole food. So far, in 18 months they have raised over $15,000 to give back to the community. “Please get in touch if you would like more information enquiries@theeggproject.co.nz or if you would like to order some eggs to be laid at your doorstep visit www.theeggproject.co.nz.”
