Autumn

Our place, our people

"KIA ORA, GIDDAY AND WELCOME TO OUR PLACE" Autumn, a time to celebrate and enjoy our big season of events.

As the lazy hazy days of summer peel away making way for the new season, Feilding and Manawatū District will burst into a kaleidoscope of colour and activity. Just as Mother Nature will cast her incredible influence across our district, so too will our army of passionate organisers and volunteers who do the magnificent mahi (work) to bring a profusion of events, festivals and fairs for everyone to enjoy while adding a vibrancy to our place. Our events help us to celebrate, encourage cultural and community interaction, enrich lives, and build memories. They ensure that our home continues to be a landmark for attracting and growing good people, great business and investment. Locals come together with visitors who are drawn in from our neighbouring areas and across the country to share in the outstanding events hosted in our beautiful Manawatū District. Our place is renowned for its outstanding venues and generous hospitality that is second to none. In March alone we will host massive events with everything from the Central District Field Days at our world class Manfeild Park, to magnificent FAHS Feilding High School opening to the community for a three day centenary celebration, and beautiful Kimbolton village hosting the Kimbolton Sculpture Festival. The Great Manawatū Steam Fair, Dahlia Day Garden Party, Mt Biggs School 100th Celebration and Apiti Family Mountain Bike Ride plus so many more events organised, too many to name here! Visit our website to check out WHAT'S ON in full. This is where you'll find everything that's happening all in one placethe Feilding & Manawatū District online events guide:

"EVENTS- A POWERFUL ROLE" Her Worship the Mayor, Manawatū District Council, Helen Worboys. I write this on a high, having just returned from being part of the support crew for one of Feilding’s most inspirational people, Shaz Dagg. She competed in the Coast-to-Coast event as the first amputee athlete to do so. The two-day event included road cycling, kayaking 70kms, off road running, river crossings and mountain climbing over Goats Pass - a total of 243 kms which Shaz completed in just 18 hours 29mins, all with just one arm, finishing 6th in her age group and received the Endurance Award. Another Feilding local, Megan Farnham who works at our Makino Pool, also completed the event coming in 3rd place in her age group. Outstanding results from two amazing local women! Aside from the commitment, mental focus and physical fitness required for this event by the competitors, it made me reflect on the team effort it took to do this. Every competitor needed a support team to ensure they had the right gear packed and it was in the right place to start and finish each activity change, ate enough food, carried plenty of water and medications etc. Then there are the social and economic benefits of such a major event to the local economy. Country schools used this event as their major fundraiser doing the breakfasts and dinners, 400 volunteers did the marshalling with donations going back to their clubs and organisations and local businesses reaped the benefit of having several thousand visitors to their patch. Events also play a powerful role building pride in any vibrant community. Our District and region have a number of major events every year and I’m keen to see how together we can participate, promote and benefit from hosting these events.

Love The Rangitikei River "PUTAI NGAHERE DOMAIN - VINEGAR HILL" Manawatū Districts spectacular riverside escape.

Putai Ngahere Domain or Vinegar Hill, as it is mostly known, is one of the region’s most popular and spectacular picnic and camping reserves, located alongside the majestic Rangitīkei River, where a mighty 300 year old totara tree looks over the grounds as a guardian. The bush entrance to this 30.84 reserve features giant redwood, totara and other native species. The reserve provides for a range of recreation activities including swimming, fishing, white-water rafting and canoeing. It is a popular holiday camping spot for families and large groups with three main camping areas but people can camp where they wish. There are cold showers and flushing toilets available but no BBQ's. Flat, grassy, non-powered sites with plenty of tree shelter border the river, which has great swimming holes. Here you will find relaxed camping at its very best. The majestic Rangitikei River snakes its way along the western boundary of the Manawatū District’s northern reaches from high up on the central plateau down to Tangimoana Beach where its spills into the Tasman Sea. It has cut spectacular gorges on its path, cliffs up to 200 metres high provide dramatic backdrops to a wide range of rapids and pools. Most of these rapids are Grade 2, ideal for family rafting adventures and an excellent learning ground for Whitewater Kayaking. The Rangitikei River also features a section of Grade 5 White-water, the best half day or two day white-water trip in the world! More water adventures are well worth exploring at Awastone.co.nz

Caring

Serving our community "OUR MAGNIFICENT VOLUNTEERS"

Feilding Health Shuttle service has been operating in the Manawatū for over 25 years. 25 years ago, the Feilding Area Committee identified a need to assist local residents to get to medical appointments at the hospital in Palmerston North. The service has since grown and extended to cover a wide range of medical appointments including GP visits, physio, optometrist, podiatrist and mental health. Based in Feilding, the service extends cover to residents of Palmerston North, Ashhurst and the surrounds of Manawatū, transporting up to 10000 patient trips each year. The local health shuttle operates a door to door service with a fleet of 4 hoist and wheelchair capable vehicles to ensure that clients with health or mobility issues can easily attend their medical appointments, helping to ease the anxiety that may come with the difficulty of finding transport to appointments. The service operates Monday to Friday excluding public holidays. As a registered charity there is no charge but a koha is appreciated to assist us to cover our operational costs. The service is run by a team of dedicated volunteers in both driving and assistant roles. Our volunteers are understanding and empathetic, endeavouring to meet the specific needs of everyone

FAHS Established 1921

Celebrate

FAHS Established 1921 “KIA TOA KIA NGAKAUNUI” “Have courage, desire greatly.”

Feilding Technical School (the present Community Centre building) was the local high school but provided no ability to teach agriculture. So, with the teaching of agriculture at a low ebb nationally, a local farmer and businessman, Harry Tolley, visualized a new school. He became the driving force and “threw the whole of his energy and vigorous personality into the ‘Agricultural High School’ idea”. It was due to Harry that the foundations for Feilding Agricultural High School were laid. However, it wasn’t plain sailing for Harry and progress was slow as there was strong opposition to this revolutionary proposal. So, in 1920, Harry formed a sub-committee with other local farmers and business owners; Hugh Atkinson, Archibald Campbell and James Knight. The Hon. Harry Guthrie was a former teacher and MP for the Oroua electorate who held the Ministry of Lands portfolio. He also worked closely with the other four founders. This newly formed committee raised funds and Kiwitea, Oroua and Manawatū County Councils also provided financial assistance. A site was selected for the proposed school and the Feilding Borough Council permitted the purchase of 20 acres on North Street. In 1921 a brick building of four classrooms and a Chemistry lab were erected and the new Feilding Agricultural High School came into being. Dr L. J. Wild was appointed the first principal of Feilding Agricultural High School.

Dr Wild asked local Feilding resident, Sir Hector Booth, to provide a school motto in the Maori language. Sir Booth, immediately said “Kia Toa Kia Ngakaunui” which, when translated, means “Have courage, desire greatly.” It was Sir Peter Buck (Te Rangihiroa) who gifted the school’s crest, made up of huia feathers representing chieftainship and honour. In 2000 the school changed its name to FAHS – Feilding High School. Nathan Stewart is the current Principal and welcomes everyone to join in celebrating the school turning 100.

"MOUNT BIGGS SCHOOL CENTENARY"

"A place where children are at the heart of all we do -Ko te tamaite te putake o te kaupapa." Discussions of building a school in the area first started in 1913 but the Great War put an end to planning until 1919 when a letter to the Education Board spoke of a need for a school, stressing the difficulty of keeping farm workers once their children reached school age. A site of two acres had been offered free by Mr Arthur Lobb and Mr Charles Masters, who also guaranteed one hundred pounds towards the building fund as well as accommodation for the teacher

The original school opened in March 1921 with a roll of 23 pupils. In 1958 the entire school was gutted by fire and pupils were transported to Manchester Street School until a new school was built and opened

in 1959. Over the ensuing years additional resource rooms and classrooms as well as a swimming pool were added. The school continues to develop it's spaces and the role has grown to over 100 students who enjoy its many unique rural aspects such as Ag Day. Mt Biggs School is celebrating 100 years on 12 & 13 March, and invite all those with any connection to the school, both past and present– students, staff, board members, family and community members to this momentous event. Discover "CENTRAL DISTRICT FIELD DAYS"

A unique agricultural event that attracts over 27,000 people each year to friendly Feilding, Manawatū. Now in its 28th year, New Zealand’s largest regional agriculture event, Central Districts Field Days, returns 18-20 March, 2021. This must-do event turns Feilding into the hub for the heartland rural sector, with thousands of people flocking to Manfeild to connect with the community and discover the latest in farm machinery through to vehicles deals, and experience primary industry innovations through to new lifestyle products. Anticipation is building and the region has had to wait a lot longer for this year’s event. “We were devastate to be forced to cancel the 2020 season at the 11th hour due to the emergence of Covid-19. Hundreds of exhibitors and businesses put in months of preparation, and we know how much people looked forward to experiencing Field Days too,” Central Districts Field Days director Henry McLernon, says. “We are sure it will be worth the wait, and we are proud that it will bring a much-needed boost to the Manawatū region." A silver lining of the past 12 months is that New Zealanders are embracing and exploring their own country, and supporting Kiwi businesses – forging true local connections. "As this is the biggest rural show that Kiwis can physically attend in the past year, we anticipate an increase in visitors from not just Manawatū but greater New Zealand.” The 2021 Central Districts Field Days will encompass all facets of the rural sector, providing a platform where local and national businesses can showcase their products, services, knowledge and innovations. “Our Forestry Hub is a collaboration of the sector, showcasing safety, training opportunities and local companies. A series of speakers discussing carbon, farm forestry, industry safety, investments and training,” McLernon says.

Intrique "KIMBOLTON SCULPTURE FESTIVAL, 27 MARCH"

Amazingly resourceful, creative and intriguing sculptures, dozens of artists and craft stalls. The momentum is growing for the Kimbolton Sculpture Festival 2021 after Covid-19 scuppered last year’s event. The event committee has added in a brand new category which will open the doors to even more sculptures. The NZ Rural Sculpture Open Award will allow sculptors with a contemporary edge to get involved. Committee member Carly Thomas said the award will see more scope for different subject matter and could bring a whole new outlook to the rural theme. “We want the festival to be inclusive to those who may want to step away from the more rurally themed sculptures. Creativity can have a free rein and it will be exciting to see what comes in. The prize money kete has grown bigger to accommodate the new award and the first prize winner will go home with $2000, while the runner-up will be $500 richer. The entries will also be eligible for the People’s Choice Award. There are more than 20 award categories in the festival, ranging from the Creative Cocky Award - which encourages rural people to get on board - through to a whole raft of kid’s awards. There is a

prize pool of

over $15,000. The Kimbolton Sculpture Festival first began in 2018, driven by a small group of volunteers who wanted to see something big and positive happen in their little rural village. The challenge is to be creative with recycled objects found around the farm and the ethos is about the wellness benefits of making art. The festival was a hit and it has continued to grow and evolve. “We are always thinking of new ways to make the festival even better”, said Thomas, “and the new award is part of that growth, inviting more people in to make even more incredible sculptures.”
