23 YEARS OF SKETCHES BY TODD POTEET

Sketchbooks have always been a large part of my professional practice. I use them to explore my world, to study people, and to record my daily experiences. The works here have been selected from more than 30 sketchbooks from abroad trips, daily practice, and in-class studies over the last 20 years. I have openly shared my sketchbooks with students and encouraged them to develop their own sketching practices. When I have traveled abroad with students, they are required to study the world through daily sketching. This helps them to see more, notice nuances, and understand their world on a deeper level. I hope you will enjoy this small collection of selected sketchbook works, and join me on creating your own visual journals.

During class, I often take time to observe and draw the students. This allows me to notice their own creative process, and to teach them at a more personal level.

Along with Alex Baer, I started an exchange program with another art school in Tlaxcala, Mexico. Each summer we would host teachers and students from their program. They enriched the experience of our students, and we expanded their drawing and painting skills.

Prague

Over the years, I have taken students to Florence, Rome, Prague, Vienna, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Mexico, Montreal, and Frankfurt. During each trip, every student and I raced to fill a sketchbook with our observations.

Drawing my family over the years has taken on a priority and has replaced the need to take photos. I find that when I spend the moments drawing the scene that it takes on a genuine feeling and records a moment both on the page and in my mind.
