Message from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

I am delighted that you can join us for our fourth annual Art After Dark gala. Tonight is an excit ing night in our arts community, as we celebrate three fantastic honorees — G. Angela Henry, Shakur Peterson, and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Your generous support this evening provides essential resources for The Art Effect’s education and youth devel opment programs, empowering young people in the Hudson Valley. Thank you!

Tonight we invite you to step into a Garden of Wonder inspired by our recent inaugural PKX Arts Festival, Wonderland, in which students, artists, and the community came together making our mark on the City of Poughkeepsie and taking steps towards the creation of a Youth Arts Empow erment Zone in and around the Trolley Barn.

For nearly 40 years, The Art Effect has empowered Hudson Valley youth to discover their pas sion and forge a path of success. We offer programs that range from introductory art classes for young children and adults; college readiness programs for aspiring artists and filmmakers, and workforce development programs for local youth who engage their community through public art, film, curating international exhibitions and even the recent PKX Festival!

We are so grateful to be able to celebrate our honorees with you tonight. Your generosity sup ports The Art Effect’s ability to transform young lives and our community through the arts. Thank you, and we hope you enjoy Art After Dark: Garden of Wonder!

G. Angela Henry

As the child of social activist parents, G. Angela Henry has engaged in community-building all her life. She is known locally as a tireless volunteer, including in the arts community as former board chair of Arts Mid-Hudson.

Her recent appointment as Executive Director of the Poughkeepsie Public Schools Foundation will further her commitment to the arts and underserved communities alongside her own artistic pursuits. Under the stage name of Grace Angela Henry, Angela’s voice can be heard on audio tours for Berkshire Botanical Garden, Dutch World Heritage Tours, and Historic Huguenot Street and on audio-books for authors such as Cornelia E. Davis, K. Heidi Fishman, Condoleezza Rice, and Linda R. Spitzfaden.

Angela narrated films for the FDR National Historic Site, voiced Toni Morrison in the awardwinning “Shokran, Toni,” and narrates “A Sculpted Life”, which will air on PBS. She has appeared in movies and on the stage, and is especially known locally for historic graveyard tours, her portrayal of Sojourner Truth, and as a popular MC for nonprofit galas.

Angela’s training in the performing arts includes the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, Harlem School of the Arts, The Juilliard School, Tufts University, and Harvard University. She is an amateur watercolorist, has taught silversmithing, and is pretty handy at needlework.
