BOOK WEEK COLOURING COMPETITION Bring on the Colour! The Federation Council Libraries Colouring Competition is officially back with this year’s Book Week theme: “Symphony of Stories.” What better way to celebrate than to create our very own visual rendition of this year’s theme with a colouring competition? Let your imagination run wild, bring those weird and wonderful musical stories to life and show us your masterpiece! There are fantastic prizes up for grabs for the winner of each of our three age categories: 0-5, 6-9 and 1013 years. Pick up your colouring sheet (and library membership form if you aren’t a member yet!) from your local library within the Federation Council area today. BARK IN THE PARK EVENT Federation Council in partnership with Corowa Dog Lovers, is excited to announce Bark in the Park, a special dedication event taking place at 10.30am on Saturday 12 September, 2026. The event will be held at the Maryann Herbert Memorial Dog Park in the Bangerang Park Precinct, Corowa to celebrate the park’s new upgrades and to host an official renaming ceremony in honour of Maryann Herbert. The community is invited to enjoy a fantastic family friendly day out. The Park will come alive with demos, raffle draws, pet product stalls, a BBQ lunch catered by the Men’s Shed, and a costume dog parade with prizes. During the event, attendees are asked to keep their dogs leashed in the Large Dog Area, while the Small Dog Area will remain off-leash. ON EXHIBITION Proposal to Re-establish existing Alcohol free Zones and Prohibited Zones The proposal to re-establish Alcohol Free Zones & Alcohol Prohibited Areas in Corowa, Howlong and Mulwala is now available on public exhibition. In accordance with the NSW Local Government Act 1993, this proposal seeks to reinstate these public safety declarations for a maximum allowable period of four (4) years, establishing a new fixed expiry date of Sunday 30 June, 2030. Council invites residents to review the proposal from Council’s website or at any Council office and provide feedback. Feedback closes 5pm, Monday 31 August, 2026. Draft Volunteer Management Policy At Council’s July ordinary meeting it endorsed the Draft Volunteer Management Policy for public exhibition for a period of 28 days. This policy is to promote an effective, safe and mutually beneficial working relationship between Federation Council and its volunteers. The draft policy is currently available for the community to view and Council is seeking feedback until 5pm, Monday 14 September, 2026. THE BALD ARCHY PRIZE - SEEKING VOLUNTEERS The notoriously hilarious and irreverent Bald Archy Prize is making its much anticipated return to Corowa. Running from Saturday 12 September to Sunday 11 October, 2026 at the Corowa Arts Space, the exhibition promises a month of sharp wit, fearless satire, and spectacular talent. Bringing a month-long national exhibition to life requires a massive amount of behind-the-scenes energy. We are currently calling on enthusiastic locals to join the dedicated team of 30 volunteers who keep the show going. Whether you are an art lover or just enjoy a great laugh, volunteering is a fantastic way to support the arts and experience the magic of the Bald Archy from behind the scenes. GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP Need funding to get a community project off the ground or grow your local business? Federation Council is holding a practical Grant Writing Workshop on Friday 18 September, 2026 from 10:00am 11:00am at the Corowa TAFE. Hosted by Council’s Alex Campbell (Grants Officer), the session features guest speakers from successful local recipient groups, including the Corowa She Shed and Corowa Community Gardens, sharing real world advice on governance, strategic planning and using Council’s Grant Guru search engine or .idcommunity profile software via Council’s website. The workshop is free to attend. Due to room capacity, attendance is capped at 30 people (a waitlist/second session may be established if exceeded). RSVPs are essential. HOW TO CHECK FOR WATER LEAKS Undetected water leaks can waste thousands of litres of water each year, leading to higher than usual water bills and potential damage to your property. Federation Council encourages all residents to regularly inspect their homes and gardens to ensure water is being used efficiently. Here are six simple steps to help you identify and address leaks around the home: Check hot water system’s expansion valves. They • shouldn’t leak water constantly. Check taps and toilets regularly for signs and sounds of • leaks. Place dry toilet paper in the bowl and check it stays dry • between flushes. Disconnect hoses or irrigation pipes from garden taps and • check taps aren’t leaking. Look for green patches of grass that are different from the • surrounding grass. If you suspect there’s a large leak or cannot locate the • source, contact a licensed plumber with specialist equipment to inspect. Taking a few minutes to check your property today helps preserve our community’s local water supply and saves you money.
SWOOPING SEASON Spring often signals the beginning of the breeding season for our native birds, mainly Magpies and Plovers, which subsequently means swooping. During the nesting season, a Magpie may swoop on people, clacking its beak. While alarming, it is usually an attempt to defend its family, so it is just a warning. The good news is that a single magpie will swoop for only six weeks until their chicks leave the nest. A list of known swooping locations is available from Council’s website to help protect you and your family.
