Twenty-five years have passed since September 11, 2001—a day that forever changed our nation, our City and our Department. While time has moved forward, our promise has not. At the FDNY, we remain steadfast in our vow to Never Forget. That promise is not simply about remembering the events of one tragic day. It is about honoring the 343 members we lost, the thousands who answered the call in the rescue and recovery effort, and the many more lost in the years since to World Trade Centerrelated illnesses. Their sacrifice continues to shape who we are and how we serve. As we mark this solemn anniversary, we also reflect on the enduring strength of the FDNY. Every day, our members respond to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, public safety threats and countless other calls for help with the same courage, professionalism and compassion that have defined this Department for more than 160 years. Whether on the front lines or behind the scenes supporting our operations, our members remain laser-focused on protecting the people of New York City. The greatest tribute we can pay to those who came before us is to carry forward their legacy. We do that through rigorous training, constant innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. We adapt to new challenges while remaining grounded in the values that have always defined this Department: service, sacrifice and honor. Those values are also reflected in the traditions we preserve and the ceremonies we hold. Remembrance is woven into the fabric of the FDNY. We ensure that every memorial, tribute and Department ceremony is conducted with the dignity, precision and reverence our members and their families deserve. This year, we recognize ALL the dedicated members of our Department, who, 25 years after our deadliest day, remain resolute in our mission, devoted to service and committed to the legacy of those who came before. We also thank David Solomon, Chairman of Goldman Sachs and this year’s Foundation Dinner honoree. We thank you for your tireless efforts in spreading the good news about the Foundation and working tirelessly in support of our mission. It is the privilege of a lifetime to serve as your Fire Commissioner. As we commemorate 25 years since September 11, I renew my commitment to advocate for every member of this Department, to honor those who made the Supreme Sacrifice, to care for those who continue to bear its lasting impact, and to make sure the FDNY remains prepared to meet whatever challenges lie ahead. Finally, I extend my deepest gratitude to the FDNY Foundation. Its enduring partnership has strengthened our Department, supported our members and their families, and helped preserve the legacy of those we will Never Forget.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors of the FDNY Foundation, welcome to our annual Gala Dinner and THANK YOU for being here. As we solemnly remember the ultimate sacrifice that 343 members of the FDNY made for us 25 years ago on September 11, and the more than 600 that we have lost to 9/11 related illness since that day, we are also reminded of the incredible sacrifices that the members of the FDNY makes for us every single day. It is an honor for all of us to be sitting here among New York City’s heroes to be able to thank them personally for all that they do. Thank you also to our honoree, David Solomon, Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs, for the incredible support that you provide to the FDNY and the City of New York. I continue to be humbled and proud of what the FDNY Foundation is doing for the FDNY. More importantly, I am truly grateful for the support of our generous donors that allows us to do this important work. The FDNY Foundation is here to provide the general public with life saving fire safety education and to provide the department with critical training, equipment and services that the city does not fund. Without all of you, the FDNY simply wouldn’t be the greatest fire department in the world. By supporting the FDNY Foundation, all of you are helping the FDNY save lives. The thousands of men and women that work for the FDNY, from the firefighters, EMT’s and paramedics you see on the street, to the hundreds of people who work behind the scenes, both uniform and civilian, proudly sacrifice so much for the people who live and work in this city because they love this city like we all do. They don’t ask whether they can afford to show up. They just show up. Ready to help every person who sets foot in this city and protect every square inch of property in it. They don't hesitate. It is our job at the Foundation to make sure that they have the financial support they need to answer those calls. What we do at the Foundation is our way of saying thank you to them. After September 11, the phrase “Never Forget” took on a new, powerful meaning. We at the FDNY Foundation will never forget those we lost that day, those we have lost since and, most importantly, we will never forget the incredible sacrifices that every member of the FDNY, past, present and future, makes for us. We are committed to supporting them in everything we do. Thank you to everyone, including the hundreds of FDNY members, who made this spectacular, record-breaking event happen. And thank you all for supporting the greatest fire department in the world. Yours in support of the FDNY, Matthew J. DiLiberto Chairman, FDNY Foundation Honorary Deputy Chief, FDNY We Honor and Remember

FDNY OVERVIEW

The FDNY is the largest Fire Department in the United States and is universally recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. Annually, FDNY responds to millions of emergency calls. The Department's primary mission is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, fire prevention and other critical public safety services to both residents and visitors in New York City's five boroughs. It also responds outside of the City's borders to assist neighboring municipalities, and nationally/internationally on special assignments. Since its inception in 1865, the FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest large city in the country. This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department's core values. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property. They aim to prevent emergencies by continually educating the public in fire and life safety and disaster preparedness, as well as enforcing public safety codes. The head of the Department is the Fire Commissioner; the second in command is the First Deputy Commissioner. The Chief of Department is the highest ranking uniformed member. Currently, the FDNY has more than 17,000 employees, including approximately: - 11,000 firefighters and fire officers - 4,500 EMTs, paramedics and EMS officers - 2,000 civilian employees Spread across New York City's 302 square miles, the FDNY has 218 firehouses, 39 EMS stations and additional support facilities, including ones housing fleet services, fire alarm and emergency medical dispatch, and health services for its membership. The Department's Fire Academy (also known as "The Rock") is located on Manhattan's Randall's Island, and its EMS Academy (also referred to as "The Fort") is located at Fort Totten in Queens. FDNY Headquarters, housing its Fire Department Operations Center (FDOC), is located in Brooklyn. The Department has a fleet of more than 1,300 apparatus, specialty vehicles, ambulances and fireboats.
