Artist Profile: Dion Beasley
Alywarr artist Dion Beasley has built a remarkable practice rooted in memory, observation, and humour. Born in Alice Springs and raised across the Barkly region, Dion has long used drawing as his primary language. As a Deaf artist living with muscular dystrophy, his pencil has become a vital tool for storytelling—capturing the people, places and animals that shape his world.
Dion is best known for his vivid depictions of camp dogs, the free-roaming canines found throughout remote communities. His drawings chart the rhythms of their lives: the squabbles, the friendships, the roaming packs, and the unmistakable personalities that animate them. With a style that is both playful and astute, Dion distils complex social dynamics—between dogs, and between people and dogs—into deceptively simple lines.
Since his first exhibition in 2018, Dion’s work has appeared at major institutions including the National Gallery of Australia. His collaboration with author Johanna Bell produced three picture books about Cheeky Dogs, cementing his place in contemporary storytelling.
Dion’s art is deeply tied to Country. Many works revisit the landscapes of Alpurrurulam/Lake Nash, Owairtilla/ Canteen Creek, Mulga Camp and Tennant Creek, mapping memories of family, friendship and community. Recently, his practice has expanded into sculptural installations and dioramas, echoing the way he created as a child using stones and found materials.
Now based in Hervey Bay, Dion continues to evolve his practice, guided by curiosity, identity and the enduring spirit of his cheeky dogs.
