Fraser Coast Regional Council acknowledges to the east, the Butchulla (Badtjala) and to the west, the Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) People, their connection to Country (land, sea and sky) and recognise the many places of cultural, spiritual, social and economic significance in the community. We pay respects to their Elders – past, present and emerging. We also acknowledge other First Nation Aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islander people, who reside in the Fraser Coast region.

On the first Sunday of every month, a familiar scene unfolds beside Maryborough City Hall. Sketchbooks come out, hats go on, and a small community of artists settles in to capture the town exactly as it is in that moment.

Urban Sketchers is a worldwide art movement built around sketching the urban landscape on location, catching the atmosphere and spirit of a place as it happens rather than working from a photo taken home later. The Maryborough chapter grew out of a memorable weekend about five years ago, when Brisbane Urban Sketchers visited during Heritage Week and around fi y local and visiting sketchers filled the CBD with artwork, drawn in by the town’s heritage architecture on the banks of the Mary River. The locals who joined in liked what they’d started and decided to keep it going, forming their own registered chapter of the international organisation.

Group coordinator April Spadina says sketchers usually meet on the green space beside City Hall, though the group is just as happy to set

up somewhere di erent, having sketched at various interesting locations in the region such as galleries, gardens and historical homesteads.

“We have all ranges of artists that come along,” April says. “We’ve got some really amazing advanced artists, and then we’ve got real novices, and it’s all ages. Anybody’s welcome to come along and join in.”

This August marks the group’s fi h anniversary, and they’re marking the occasion with a showcase of members’ work at Gatakers Artspace, running from 1 August to 6 September.

Urban Sketchers Maryborough meets the first Sunday of every month, 9.30am to 11.30am, at Maryborough City Hall. Details are posted on their Facebook page.
