Today, we celebrate the ser vicemen and servicewomen who hav e given their lives on behalf of our country . We pay tribute to these American heroes, as well as their families and friends, and celebrate their legacy by honorin g their commitment and sacrifice for our free doms.

I hope you’ll join me for the Vetera ns Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. outsid e of the Community Center to recognize our veterans and those who continue to serve in our armed forces. Virginia State Sen ator Bryce Reeves, who served as a Second Lieutenant and an Infantry Airborne Ranger, will be our keynote speaker.

At 2:00 p.m., I encourage you to be a part of our annual Memorial Day parade along Park Avenue. Mason’s Dilao, Reusch Set to Reign on Memorial Day

Two personable George Mason High School seniors, Andrea Dilao and Alec Reusch, won the 17th annual Mr. and Mrs. Mason pageant/competition and will be riding the float as the King and Queen of Falls Church during the 2017 Falls Church Memorial Day parade this Monday.

The contestants were nominated by faculty and judged by a collection of student and teachers on four different categories: a prepared bio and a talent demonstration, and for the finalists, a formal wear and questionnaire portion of the competition. Dilao and Reusch rose to the top thanks to their out-of-the-box skills and clever answers that ensured they’d be representing their school come May 29.

The two took some time to sit down with the News-Press and discuss the experience during the competition, how their time was at Mason and their plans down the road.

News-Press: So how exactly did you two go about becoming Mr. and Mrs. Mason?

Reusch: Last year, since I was nominated then, too, for my talent I juggled two balls with one hand while brushing my teeth. For this year, I wanted to continue with the multi-tasking thing, and since I play hockey, I flipped a puck up on my stick and kept it in the air while reciting a Shakespeare monologue.

Dilao: I was also nominated before. My sophomore year I did this lip sync where I walked down the hallways and lip-synced to a rock song and then I got onstage and danced to a song with a few friends. I wanted to do something along the same lines this year, so Nico Ferrara and I did this Backstreet Boys vs. Spice Girls dance battle, except we gender switched. So me and four other friends were the Backstreet Boys and Nico and four other boys were the Spice Girls.

[But] I think my bio was what earned me Mrs. Mason because I pretended I was a princess for the Philippines and my sister was my bodyguard and she walked me

across the stage.

Reusch: For the questionnaire part of I had invent a new letter in the alphabet so I came up with this letter that makes a [weird] sound and started drawing it.

N-P: Graduation’s right around the corner, what are you plans for the summer and the upcoming school year?

Reusch: I am going to go to Ohio State University, and actually my family is moving there – to Columbus – so I think some point in July or August we’ll be moving there and getting settled there. I don’t know what I’m going to study yet, I’m undecided in arts and sciences, but I’ll figure something out I’m sure.

Dilao: I am going to the University of Virginia, and I’m also kind of undecided, but I’m thinking along the lines of political science or international relations. I do know for sure that I’m going to minor in Spanish.

Over the summer, I’m going to the beach with a few friends the Saturday after graduation and then I’m going back to the Philippines for three or four weeks. I haven’t been back since I was in eighth grade so I’m very excited to do that.

N-P: I know you both are still on the fence about what you plan to do career-wise after college, but what would be your the ideal field to work in if you had a choice?

Reusch: I’m big into theater.

At Mason, I’ve done all the shows.

So I’ll keep doing it to some degree [in college], whether it’s as a hobby to be in some shows or to actually study it. Really just some kind of actor or performer on stage.

Dilao: After college, I wanna test the waters a little. I wanna do some humanitarian work, I’m also kind of interested in law and teaching, so we’ll see where that takes me.

N-P: Mason’s unique in that it’s a small school in a major metro area, unlike the other schools around here. How was your own experience at Mason?

Dilao: I could never express how grateful how I am that we’re such a small school in a tiny community, but also have so much

(P����: N���-P����) diversity. We’re exposed to more than we could have imagined even living in a small community just because D.C. is minutes away.

We have State Department kids coming to Mason all the time that are sharing their experiences and we deal with a lot of strong opinions and are exposed to a lot of personalities. Even though it is kind of a bubble because it’s so isolated at times, it has been a great experience and being able to know how to deal with different kinds of perspectives that come in with the new kids and being so close to D.C, it’s definitely been a bit of a ride.

Reusch: I moved around a lot when I was younger. I was born in Virginia and lived around here, but lived in Australia when I was really young and Colorado and England at one point, so I was really grateful to stay here for the entirety of my high school career.

It was good to grow up, at least in high school, in such a great community because it’s pretty tightknit.

N-P: Anything challenging about going to such a small school?

Dilao: Everybody knows everything. You can’t keep anything hidden for very long. That hasn’t really been a problem for me, it’s just hard when something that could have seemed personal is something that everybody already knows. The community is very supportive, but it’s so small that nothing stays quiet for very long.

Reusch: You don’t really meet a ton of new people. You know, you come to school everyday and see the same people everyday, which is great, but I’ll be excited to move out and actually meet new people.

N-P: If you could go back in

time and tell your freshman self one thing, what would it be?

Reusch: I probably wouldn’t say much, if anything. I don’t have one single regret where I’m like “Oh I wish I did that differently,” everything’s been pretty fine.

Dilao: I would probably be the same way. I wouldn’t say much because I’m happy with senior me, like, I’m glad freshman me made all those mistakes because i’m happy with the way I turned out. But, if I could give freshman Andrea some advice, I’d say “Don’t stress out so much.”

Everything’s gonna work out.

N-P: Pretty cool that you’re a part of the parade, do you have any special gestures in mind?

Dilao: Probably not [laughs], maybe I’ll throw candy to children.

Reusch: I’ll be doing my Queen wave, but otherwise we’ll figure it out.

takes patriotism and service to the country and community very seriously, so military service and beyond that public service through law enforcement, firefighters, suicide prevention and education are highly promoted at JV’s,” said bartender Michael Udell, who is also a retired U.S. navy commander. “I have also heard that artists of various nationalities and races that say they feel welcome there.”

Campbell’s father and uncle Bill founded JV’s in 1947 and it was their combat experience and service during and after World War II that engendered the restaurant to the local veteran community and inspired her to continue the tradition.

Her father, George Dross, first came into contact with the perils of warfare as a dental student in Greece when soldiers from Mussolini’s army shot him in the back and left him for dead.

It was the Greek resistance that nursed him back to health and whose ranks he eventually he joined.

Dross’ military career was marked by ghastly lows as a prisoner of war on two separate occasions, but were marked by indescribable highs such as discovering the unlikely bonds that transcended national allegiance.

As part of his resistance effort, his family in Greece would often host American soldiers and he assisted British paratroopers after being released from his first captivity.

The most crucial factor in his survival came from a member of the Gestapo, who Dross found himself in the custody of upon his second capture. The German man was secretly against the war and gave him money to go back to his country.

Dross forwent dental school and teamed up with Bill to open the restaurant (then known as “Jefferson’s Restaurant”) in 1947. At the time, Jefferson

JV’s Restaurant: Championing Vets for 70 Years & Counting

For lifelong Falls Church-area resident and JV’s Restaurant proprietor Lorraine Campbell, her favorite part of Memorial Day is hearing the stories.

“I hear so many incredible stories. I hear so many stories about some of the tragedies, about the things that they’ve had to do and the camaraderie is incredible,” said Campbell.

JV’s has developed a reputation for championing veter-

ans over its 70 years in existence. Through the restaurant, Campbell raises money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Operation Renewed Hope and other charities. She has also assisted the U.S. Veteran’s Affairs Department with distributing informational pamphlets to veterans in need of help.

The restaurant’s Memorial Day weekend celebration is an extension of that ongoing patriotism. JV’s has been an unofficial stop for the motorcycle group Rolling Thunder’s Ride for

Freedom since their first year and a major step towards the restaurant’s reputation as a watering hole for the veteran community.

“It was a very small little group that came and they bought me a flag and we started selling t-shirts honoring these veterans,” said Campbell of the original Rolling Thunder celebration.

Now, every Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, Campbell provides a free all-you-can-eat buffet to veterans and anyone who wants to thank them.

“It is obviously a place that

Campbell went to college for computer science and briefly considered a different path but doesn’t regret her choice.

“I’m a people person, I love people, I love what I do, and I’m living the American dream to me,” she said.

Udell says that Lorraine Campbell’s generosity is known far and wide and it’s the word of mouth among a community of service among many nationalities that keeps a lot of the veterans’ events going.

“She’ll notice the law enforcement [uniform] décor and they’ll talk about the patches and she’ll spontaneously discount their meal,” said Udell.

A well-known hotspot for live performances of blues, country, classic rock and bluegrass, JV’s has hosted celebrities and public figures like Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, bluegrass legend Tony Rice, actor Dan Aykroyd and 1950s pop singer Eddie Fisher (who used to stop by daily and have his breakfast with George when he was stationed at Fort Myer) as either regular customers or drop-in performers.

“I believe music is good for the soul and helps you escape your problems for a while,” said Campbell.

A lot of JV’s customers have known Lorraine and her sister since they were children and the type of music attracts a number of older customers as well.

Campbell believes the connections between veterans helps keep this an intergenerational space as she sees younger veterans looking up to, and hearing stories from, older veterans here.

Parade Grand Marshal Cram Is F.C.’s Volunteer Superhero

Barbara Cram is a doer, through and through. She counts on herself to actualize her goals into our physical reality and expects you to get with the program if you know what’s good for you. But Cram isn’t a hard-charging opportunist.

She’s a devout public servant to the City of Falls Church who considers her efforts more indulgent than altruistic.

“Service is really a two-way street. I get more out of it than what I give. I couldn’t stop, I don’t think,” Cram says. “Just makes you feel better for your purpose in life.

We all have talents...everybody’s package is different. It’s our job to unwrap all the packages and see what we’ve got and share it.”

Basically, she’s a volunteer superhero. Cram soaks up the positive vibes from doing the community good and uses them as fuel to keep enriching the lives of those around her. It’s a trait that’s guided her 25 years of selfless

endeavors in Falls Church and what led Cram to being named as the Grand Marshal for Falls Church’s 2017 Memorial Day Parade this Monday.

A quick rundown of Cram’s community involvement record will tell you all you need to know about her dedication to the City.

Her appointment to Falls Church’s Tricentennial Committee in 1994 was a seminal moment in her servitude and signified her rising status as more than just another resident.

In the years that followed, she’s worked as marketing chair for the Chamber of Commerce, was one of the original minds behind the annual Watch Night New Year’s Eve event (which she continues to produce each year) and is currently the the acting president of Falls Church Arts. Cram is always getting her hands dirty for something that will enhance the City’s cultural aptitude, whether in an educational sense by hosting art exhibitions or pushing for events that create a sense of neighborly bonding.

BARBARA CRAM Past professional experiences have equipped Cram with the knowledge to bring her ideas to life. She worked for the Treasury Department and the White House before getting her hands on some real dirt when she made a career switch to landscaping, Cram knows which strings to pull in a way that doesn’t come across as strong-arming. She just lays out the facts and lets folks reach conclusions on their own.

WHY POPPIES? Many folks may be familiar with the annual distribution of poppies at this time of year on Memorial Day. But why poppies?

In WW1, In April 1915, Canadian Major (Brigade Surgeon) John McCrae was in the trenches near Ypres, Belgium, in the area traditionally called Flanders. Some of the heaviest fighting of the First World War took place there during what was known as the Second Battle of Ypres.

On April 22, the Germans used deadly chlorine gas against Allied troops in a desperate attempt to break the stalemate. Despite the debilitating effects of the gas, Canadian soldiers fought relentlessly and held the line for another 16 days.

opening more avenues of funding to fine arts projects. Devoting more money to the humanities scene may seem frivolous in light of other matters (even if it occupies a measly percentage of the City’s budget), but it’s hard to deny the service it endorses and the quality of finished projects are key to forming Falls Church’s cohesive aura.

“It’s very personable. I feel like I live in Mayberry in the way that we all know each other,” Cram continues, thinking I wouldn’t pick up on her Andy Griffith Show reference (Full disclosure: I Googled it, big deal). “It’s that closeness of community, and I know a lot of people who move here and like it for reasons they can’t describe, but I think that’s one of them. It pulls you in. I grew up in a small town and this is the closest thing I’ve had where I felt I belonged.”

With Memorial Day in sight, or “Remembrance Day” as Cram prefers to call it, she looks to honor those her family’s lost in times of war. That includes her uncle Pete and her husband’s uncle Frank, who was a pilot killed in action in 1942 after being shot down over Algeria. He was buried there for the remainder of the war but his grave was exhumed by the U.S.

once it ended and his body was brought back to Kentucky for a family burial.

The respect the Armed Services paid to Cram’s husband and his kin stuck with her as she’s grown older, and it’s why she plans to put veterans first next Monday despite her esteemed position as Grand Marshall. So there’ll be no solo convertible ride with Cram doing her best Miss America wave to admirers. Instead, she’s opted to ride in the back of a pick-up truck with other veterans and will be holding up pictures of City residents who gave their lives in war.

She’ll also be handing out the poppies traditionally associated with Remembrance Day. It’s not lost on Cram how acclaimed her status as Grand Marshal is. She plans to enjoy the experience since it’s important enough for her immediate family to make the rare assembly in a single location. But once the parade passes, it’s back to work. Thankfully, she’ll have the help she wants and needs when she gets there.

“People want to work together, I don’t feel like there’s any legacy building,” Cram says. “On the Hill, people will do a project because they want to name it after themselves. Here, it’s more about the community that they love.”

In the trenches, John McCrae tended hundreds of wounded soldiers every day. The day before he wrote his famous poem, one of McCrae's closest friends, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer was killed in the fighting and buried in a makeshift grave with a simple wooden cross.

Unable to help his friend or any of the others who had died, John McCrae gave them a voice through his poem.
