Welcome to the City of Falls Church’s Annual Memorial Day Parade and Fes tival. We are delighted that you can join us on this special day. Since 1868, communities, towns and villages throughout America have com e together to place flowers and flags on the graves of those who have given their lives for our country. Despite this long tradition, it is eas y to forget what Memorial Day is rea lly about. To paraphrase Franklin Roosevelt, after having long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy, we forget in time those who have died to win them. For this reason, I invite you all to pau se, remember, and honor these brave heroes, men and women of the Air Force, Navy, Arm y and Marines, who made the ultima te sacrifice defending and supporting our great cou ntry, its interests and its ideals. Reflect on the proud history of service of our own Little Cit y, as demonstrated by the names of nat ive sons and daughters displayed on the plaque at the Community Center. Please join us at 11 a.m. at the Vetera ns Memorial outside the Community Center to honor those brave men and women and to recognize those who continue to ser ve. Following that, the parade will begin at 2 p.m. with retiring Mr. Daniel Elementary School principal Kathleen Halayko serving as Grand Marshal. Thank you for choosing to spend this

special day with us here in the Little

City.

Ellis & Donovan Set for Reign as King & Queen BY MATT DELANEY

FALLS CHURCH NEWS-PRESS

The 16th annual Mr. and Mrs. Mason pageant/competition has come and gone with this year’s winners being an outgoing pair of seniors, Mary Catherine Donovan and Zach Ellis. Mr. and Mrs. Mason contestants are judged in four different categories: a prepared bio followed by the talent portion, and for the finalists, formal wear and a questionnaire to finish. This year’s judges had a taste for the obscure as both Donovan and Ellis won the competition and the King and Queen’s crown for Falls Church’s annual Memorial Day parade in an unconventional manner. Donovan was a last minute entry who infatuated the crowd with her bubbly persona, while Ellis’ wit smoothed over his frictional start to the competition. The two took some time to chat with the News-Press about the Mr. and Mrs. Mason competition, their postgrad plans, and to reflect on their experience at Mason. News-Press: How did you two become Mr. and Mrs. Mason? Donovan: Originally, I was really hesitant in participating because I had a lot going on with IB. But Mr. [Peter] Laub, the coordinator, convinced me to do it because it really was an honor to be nominated. I wrote a parody of Adele’s “Hello” to IB a few days before the actual performance and I was pretty unprepared for the rest of it. I didn’t have an escort. I pulled my dad out of the audience to walk me across the stage. I was wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt and fuzzy slippers because I was not expecting to make it to the formal wear portions. I sang my song and the crowd loved it. I really did not expect to win at all.

Ellis: Last year Mr. Laub wanted me to make the video for the candidates, so I did, and after [that] I complained about how I was not a candidate. I think some teachers must’ve heard me and nominated me. Once I was nominated I knew that I had complained too much to not win. N-P: Graduation’s coming up. What’re your summer and college plans after the big day? Ellis: I’m gonna go to William & Mary and I wanna study film or writing. For summer vacation, me and my friends are gonna go on a road trip. Donovan: I’m going to the University of Dayton in Ohio. No clue what I want to study or anything, but I’m looking forward to it. This summer I’m working at Creative Cauldron which is a local theater company as a camp counselor for a few weeks and I’m going to a lake with my friends. N-P: Do either of you have an ideal career in mind? Ellis: I want to direct movies – but I’m sure that’s what anyone who wants to do something involving movies says. My goal is to direct the best “Spiderman” movie ever. The Andrew Garfield ones were terrible, which is good because it made it easier for me, but tough because [Spiderman] was really good in “Captain America: Civil War.” But I think I can do it. Donovan: I definitely want to do something with music and singing in the future, but I don’t really know. N-P: You both know how unique Mason is compared to Fairfax County schools. How was your own experience? Ellis: I like Mason a lot. I moved here in fifth grade [and] it was a lot smaller than all the [other] schools I went to, but I liked that because everyone knew everyone. I wasn’t just some

MARY CATHERINE DONOVAN (LEFT) AND ZACH ELLIS, seen here speaking with the News-Press, won the reigns of Memorial Day King & Queen by winning the 16th annual Mr. and Mrs. Mason competition in late February. (P: N-P) weird kid, I was Zach, that weird kid everyone knows. Donovan: I’m a lifer here in Falls Church. I’ve been here since Mount Daniel [Elementary School]. I do think it’s really good because like [Zach] said you know everybody and it’s nice to have so many friendly faces around the school. N-P: Anything challenging about going to such a small school? Ellis: It could be tough. I do the announcements and one time I called out my [Theory of Knowledge] teacher. He called me out in his class, so for a while it was awkward to have [class] with him. Donovan: Sometimes it’s difficult because you’re with the same group of friends since kindergarten. When we grow up we realize we’re different people. Even now I’m not that close with the people

I was the past few years, but I get along great with everyone, so I think it’s a positive experience rather than a negative one. N-P: Is there anything you wish you would’ve done differently in high school? Ellis: I wish I would’ve gotten involved in more things earlier, but I guess everyone wishes that. I also wish I had put more thought into college. I decided I didn’t want to go to [BYU] last minute, but William & Mary’s a great school so I don’t have anything to complain about. Donovan: Because I played volleyball I was never able to do a musical or a school play, which I kind of regret, and I know my theater teacher was bummed about it, too. I’m also sad that I never got a detention because my math teacher is Mr. [Erik] Healey and

[also] the Dean of Students and he makes fun of me for it. N-P: What’s one thing you’d tell your freshman self now, if you could? Donovan: Don’t be afraid to branch out and meet new people. Like I said, we go to Mason and it’s small so a lot of the people are friends since elementary school. Sometimes that just doesn’t work out, so I say branch out and be confident and go for stuff. I also wish I started singing in the eighth grade, instead of waiting until last year. Ellis: I would tell myself that you are going to be awesome, even more than you are now. I’d tell him to stay motivated and to continue making videos for his YouTube channel [and] would write a list down of things that I wish had gone differently so we’d both be better off.

American Legion Post to Be Converted into Restaurant by Drew Costley

Falls Church News-Press

A dedication stone honoring fallen soldiers sits on the lot of 205 Park Avenue, the site of the old Blue and Gray American Legion Post 225 building, covered in weeds, with an infantry of insects guarding against anyone who comes near. The majority of the writing on a plaque attached to the stone is covered in the weeds, but it was installed by members of that American Legion post on November 11, 1997, dedicating the site of the building to the members’ bygone comrades. The plaque is barely visible from the sidewalk on Park Avenue and could easily be passed up by anyone walking up to the main entrance of the building. It’s actually a fitting symbol for the building, which is in a state of disrepair, and is one of two traces – the other is a mailbox that reads “American Legion Auxiliary Unit 225” on the side – of the American Legion post that used to occupy the building. Beyond that, there is a tattered American Legion sticker on the window of one of the doors to the building and an American flag, with its red, white and blue washed out from weathering, hanging in front of another one of the doors. The rest of the property looks like an ordinary abandoned lot, with weeds, vines and other plants growing into the building’s structure and broken windows scattered throughout the building’s facades. But the old Blue and Gray

building – also known as the Old Cloverdale House, the oldest surviving house in the City, which was built in 1797 on W. Broad and later moved to its present location on Park Avenue – has a makeover in its future. The ownership group that owns Liberty Tavern, Lyon Hall, LeoNora and Northside Social in Arlington has purchased the building and is converting it into a second location of Northside Social. The owners, Stephen and Mark Fedorchak and Brian Normile, hope to begin restoration and construction on the Blue and Gray building in June and finish and open the new Northside Social location in mid to late fall. The new owners of the property have a knack for restoring old buildings, like the ones housing their present businesses in Arlington, and opening restaurants in the new digs. They plan to do the same with the old Blue and Gray building and are nearing completion of the permitting process with the City’s Historic Commission and Historic Architectural Advisory Board. Mark Fedorchak, who also owns Galleria Florist in Falls Church, said that the new owners of 205 Park Avenue “appreciate historic buildings and the aesthetic cues that the history gives them.” “It gives us a starting point for our design process that we find valuable,” Fedorchak said. According to City records, the group has plans on demolishing part of the building, but renovating and adding onto historic seg-

It should really be an interesting contrast

A DEDICATION STONE INSTALLED BY MEMBERS of what was then American Legion Post 225 sits in front of the building and is now nearly covered in weeds. The owners of the coming Northside Social restaurant said that the stone, dedicated to fallen American soldiers on November 11, 1997, will remain on the property, but will be moved so that it’s closer to Park Avenue. between the historic facades that are there currently.” Normile said that integrity of the original facades will be maintained, but that the interior of the building is going to undergo a “full restoration” in order to get it up to code. “The interior of this building is in particularly rough condition,” he said. “It hasn’t had any improvements for probably the better part of 40 – 50 years.” Another challenge for the Fedorchaks and Normile is that the building was not built to be compliant with commercial building codes today. “I’ve got to get this building compliant with commercial code for the level of occupancy, which is going to be coffee shop, cafe and wine bar,” said Normile, who is handling the construction and renovation of the building. “As it relates to that, it’s basically going to entail structural work to solidify the integrity of what’s there.” Despite the need to fully restore the interior of the building, Mark Fedorchak said that they will take their design cues for the interior of the building from the historic nature of the structure. The group is considering incorporating some of the existing building materials on the inside, Normile said. These considerations, and the ones that pertain to the facades of the building, have not been taken lightly by the ownership group converting the old Blue and Gray building into a new Northside Social.

The months-long process of working with the City to ensure the integrity of the historic structure is the fruition of the responsibility both Fedorchak and Normile claimed for maintaining the building’s historic nature. Normile, who has been the point person working with the City on behalf of the group, said that he has heard enthusiasm from longtime City residents about the restoration and use of the building. “One of the things our group likes to do, and I think it shows in projects in Arlington, is historic renovation and restoration projects, so we’ve got pretty significant experience in that,” Normile said. “And that was really what ultimately attracted us to restoring this building and this project. It gave us a chance to bring back to life a building that had historic significance in Falls Church and it really was located in a place where we felt we could create a community center.” In addition to the restoration and renovation of the interiors and facades of the building, Falls Church’s Northside Social will have lots of patio seating, according to Fedorchak, and “two porches stacked on top of each other,” Normile said. So there will be plenty outdoor seating. And Normile ensured that the dedication stone, now obscured from view, will remain on the property. In fact, it will be moved closer to Park Avenue, so it will be much harder to miss.

Mt. Daniel Principal Halayko Serves as Grand Marshal by Patricia Leslie

Falls Church News-Press

To say that Kathleen Halayko is giving up her job to lead the 2016 Falls Church Memorial Day Parade would be a stretch, but it’s no coincidence that the two events are happening close to the same time. June 30 will end her reign at Mt. Daniel Elementary School where she has been principal for 18 years, and on May 30 she will serve as the Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshal. “I was very honored” to be selected Grand Marshal, she said in an interview at her school office. When she got the call about her Grand Marshal nomination and selection by the city’s Parks and Recreation Board, “I was amazed” and “more touched” to be included in the group of past marshals, once she saw the list. “I hope it’ll be a lot of fun since I know a lot of children come” to the parade, she said. The suggestion that she might lead the parade on a horse or elephant brought a guffaw. “And I’m not going to be on a camel either!” she laughed. “No, I’ll be in a car.” Halayko is retiring after 28 years at Mt. Daniel where she worked as a speech and language pathologist for 10 years before she was named principal. Prior to Mt. Daniel, she was coordinator of the speech and language program for Prince William County schools for five years. And she took off time to raise three children, two of whom attended Mt. Daniel, and all of whom still live in the area with Halayko’s five grandchildren. Sitting in her office with windows which look out upon the lush green outdoors which surround Mt. Daniel, Halayko reminisced briefly about her long tenure at the school. She said repeatedly that working there has been a joy, topped by the children and the staff who have made it all worthwhile. “I have loved the job” she said more than once. “I am retiring with great, great memories,” and she has no regrets, but had a few recommendations for her replacement, who was named before Halayko spoke to the News-Press. First, the person must “be a very good listener and encourage collaboration with the staff and parents to be problem solvers together as much as possible. “Enjoy the students because you will. It’s the best part of the job. The children make the job.

MOUNT DANIEL SCHOOL’S KATHLEEN HALAYKO sits in her office with a plush of the school’s mascot, Danny the Hippo, in the photo above. Halayko was chosen by Falls Church City’s Recreation and Parks board as the Grand Marshal of this year’s Memorial Day Parade. In the photo to the right, Halayko stands outside of the Mount Daniel School, where she has worked for 28 years, serving as the school’s principal for the last 18 years. Halayko is retiring from the school on June 30. She said that she was “amazed” to be selected as this year’s Grand Marshal in an interview with the News-Press. (Photos: News-Press/Patricia Leslie) The teachers do as well. And so do the families. They come to the city because they are seeking a wonderful education for their children, and they work hard to become part of the fabric of the community.” Her biggest challenge as principal has been “the school size” and accommodating the vast growth in student population over the last 28 years. “We’ve been using every conceivable space,” she said. The school was designed for a maximum of 260 pupils which it has exceeded for a long time. Right now Mt. Daniel “is way over capacity with 380. It’s very, very full, and one year we had 20 classroom sections.” Now, Mt. Daniel has 17 sections, and the music and Spanish teachers do not have to push around their carts from classroom to classroom as they have been forced to do in the past.

It’s been “uncomfortable” at times in the squeezed space, and Halayko praised the staff who has “worked hard and creatively to meet the goal of building an environment of a good educational experience for the children.” Although Falls Church taxpayers approved a bond referendum in 2014 for school improvements, it’s not happening yet. “We are supposed to be in construction right now, and I’ve stayed to help with it. Now they don’t know when it will happen.” She rejected the notion that the lack of physical improvements to Mt. Daniel is a factor in her retirement. As principal Halayko has had no time for hobbies. “This is a very demanding job” which doesn’t offer much free time, but she hopes to pick up tennis again (after an almost 30-year lapse) and will continue with a

favorite pastime, reading. She’s a member of three book clubs (“they are fun” and “ways I keep in touch with friends and neighbors”) and tops on her list are historical fiction, biographies, and mysteries which “I’m just beginning to get into.” Right now she is reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. Halayko was born in Troy, New York, and her mother and sister are special educators, too. Her husband’s job at the Pentagon brought Halayko to the area in 1971. Would she consider substi-

tute teaching in retirement? That brought a quick “no,” but filling in for a principal is a possibility, but she is not seeking a position. Then why is she retiring? “I guess it’s just time,” she said a little wistfully but perked up at the prospect of traveling with her husband who retired 18 months ago. Their first trip is to France this fall. And, “I want to enjoy my children.” On June 13 Principal Halayko will be honored with other retirees at a celebration at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School.

Winning an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy was the beginning of his career in the Navy, graduating from the academy in 1989. The IB program at Mason provided him with the necessary challenges he needed to be successful in the academy. At flight school, Huffman logged over 2,800 hours in the cockpit of 24 different types of aircraft. Huffman and his wife, Judy, are now stationed in Bremerton, Wash., homeport of the USS John C.
