Free Leaf Mulch Now Available at the Recycling Center Don’t miss out on high quality leaf mulch available at the Falls Church Recycling Center free of charge! The Recycling Center is located at 217 Gordon Road and is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk. Bring your own container and tools for loading mulch, or you may hire someone to load and/or haul it for you. Contractors must hand-load mulch and may not bring heavy equipment into the Recycling Center (no loaders or dump trucks, please). RAD Registration Ends March 27 The Police Department is offering a free Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women, 12 years of age and older. The course is offered in four, threehour sessions. Classes will be held at St. James School (830 W. Broad St.) on April 5, 7, 12, and 14, from 6-9 p.m. Participants are required to attend all four sessions. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that addresses awareness, prevention, risk reduction, risk avoidance, and the basics of hands-on self-defense training. R.A.D. is not a martial arts program. Nationally certified R.A.D. instructors from the City Police Department teach the course. The registration deadline is March 27. Repairing Homes, Rebuilding Lives: Home Repair for the Community Rebuilding Together is the leading non-profit home repair provider for the Falls Church community. On the weekend of April 24-25, volunteers will repair the homes for free of more than 50 lowincome homeowners throughout Arlington, Fairfax and the City of Falls Church To qualify for the program, you must own and live in the home to be repaired and met income level requirements. Priority is given to seniors, persons with disabilities and families with children. To apply call RPJ Housing, the non-profit that runs the home repair program, at 703-528-5606 ext. 16. A recipient of the City’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), RPJ Housing provides free home repair services to low- and moderate-income homeowners in Northern Virginia throughout the year. Volunteers conduct home repairs to increase the homeowner’s ease of use, safety, security, and independence. Emphasis is placed on accessibility and safety modifications to accommodate lowincome homeowners who are elderly and/or disabled.

The leaf mulch program accomplishes two important goals: • It saves tax dollars. Every fall, Operations Division crews vacuum approximately 5,000 cubic yards of leaves from the curb. It is far less expensive to recycle the leaves into mulch and offer it back to residents than it is to haul the leaves away and pay to dispose of them. • It brings life back to your soil and lawn. Adding leaf mulch to your soil will naturally turn clay-rich soil into nutrient-rich soil that is healthier for trees and plants - with zero waste in the process. Turn Off the Lights for Earth Hour 2010 This Saturday, join millions across the globe and turn off your lights for one hour, Earth Hour, at 8:30 p.m. City Council proclaimed 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. on March 27 as Earth Hour to make a stand against climate change. Residents and businesses are encouraged to turn off all non-essential lighting and commit to actions reduce their carbon footprints and conserve energy.
