WELCOME TO TONIGHT’S RECITAL What a pleasure it is to welcome Yo-Yo Ma to Denver this evening! For more than 60 years, Friends of Chamber Music has presented the world’s finest musicians to Denver area audiences and tonight’s concert surely ranks among the highlights of our past six decades.

We recently announced our 2015-2016 season and hope you’ll agree that our upcoming seven-concert Chamber Series and three-concert Piano Series will provide another season of compelling performances.

Like Yo-Yo Ma, Friends of Chamber Music is committed to developing new audiences for chamber music. Our wide variety of in-school music education programs are offered free of charge in Denver Public Schools and range from elementary school assemblies to high school composition residencies.

Our adult-oriented programs include a variety of opportunities, from lectures to free lunchtime concerts, and are intended to engage both musical novices and connoisseurs. Whether inside or outside the concert hall, we’re dedicated to sharing our passion for chamber music with new audiences.

Chamber music is such an intimate art form.

Under his artistic direction, Silkroad presents performances by the acclaimed Silk Road Ensemble and develops new music, cultural partnerships, education programs, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. Through his work with Silkroad, as throughout his career, Yo-Yo Ma seeks to expand the cello repertoire, frequently performing lesser known music of the 20th century and commissions of new concertos and recital pieces. He has premiered works by a diverse group of composers, among them Stephen Albert, Elliott Carter, Chen Yi, Richard Danielpour, Osvaldo Golijov, John Harbison, Leon Kirchner, Peter Lieberson, Zhao Lin, Christopher Rouse, Giovanni Sollima, Bright Sheng, Tan Dun, John Williams, and Dmitri YanovYanovsky.

Yo-Yo Ma Yo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences, and to his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. Whether performing new or familiar works from the cello repertoire, coming together with colleagues for chamber music, or exploring cultures and musical forms outside the Western classical tradition, Mr. Ma strives to find connections that stimulate the imagination.

As the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant, Mr. Ma has created the Citizen Musician Initiative, a movement that calls on all musicians, music lovers, music teachers and institutions to use the art form to bridge gulfs between people and to create and inspire a sense of community.

Yo-Yo Ma is strongly committed to educational programs that not only bring young audiences into contact with music but also allow them to participate in its creation. While touring, he takes time whenever possible to conduct master classes as well as more informal programs for students – musicians and non-musicians alike. At the same time, he continues to develop new concert programs for family audiences, for instance helping to inaugurate the family series at Carnegie Hall. In each of these undertakings, he works to connect music

One of Mr. Ma’s goals is the exploration of music as a means of communication and as a vehicle for the migration of ideas across a range of cultures throughout the world. To that end, he has taken time to immerse himself in subjects as diverse as native Chinese music with its distinctive instruments and the music of the Kalahari bush people in Africa.

Expanding upon this interest, in 1998, Mr. Ma established Silkroad, a nonprofit organization that seeks to create meaningful change at the intersections 4

(2008), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010). In 2011, Mr. Ma was recognized as a Kennedy Center Honoree.

Appointed a CultureConnect Ambassador by the United States Department of State in 2002, Mr. Ma has met with, trained and mentored thousands of students worldwide in countries including Lithuania, Korea, Lebanon, Azerbaijan and China. Mr. Ma serves as a UN Messenger of Peace and as a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts & the Humanities. He has performed for eight American presidents, most recently at the invitation of President Obama on the occasion of the 56th Inaugural Ceremony.

Mr. Ma’s discography of over 90 albums (including 18 Grammy Award winners) reflects his wide-ranging interests. He has made several successful recordings that defy categorization, among them Hush with Bobby McFerrin, Appalachia Waltz and Appalachian Journey with Mark O’Connor and Edgar Meyer, and two Grammy-winning tributes to the music of Brazil, Obrigado Brazil and Obrigado Brazil – Live in Concert. Mr. Ma’s recent recordings include Mendelssohn Trios with Emanuel Ax and Itzhak Perlman; The Goat Rodeo Sessions, with Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile and Stuart Duncan, which received the 2013 Grammy for Best Folk Album; and A Playlist Without Borders, recorded with the Silk Road Ensemble, which was released in September 2013.

Across this full range of releases, Mr. Ma remains one of the best-selling recording artists in the classical field.

Mr. Ma and his wife have two children.

He plays two instruments, a 1733 Montagnana cello from Venice and the 1712 Davidoff Stradivarius. Mr. Ma is represented exclusively by Opus 3 Artists.

Yo-Yo Ma was born in 1955 to Chinese parents living in Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at age four and soon came with his family to New York, where he spent most of his formative years.

Later, his principal teacher was Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School. He sought out a traditional liberal arts education to expand upon his conservatory training, graduating from Harvard University in 1976. He has received numerous awards, including the Avery Fisher Prize (1978), the Glenn Gould Prize (1999), the National Medal of the Arts (2001), the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award

Ahmet Adnan Saygun (1907-1991) left his native Turkey at the age of 19 to attend the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Vincent D’Indy. When he returned, he briefly began a career as a conductor, but soon found his calling as an ethnomusicologist in the mode of Bartók. Working with Bartók himself, Saygun traveled throughout Turkey to document folk music traditions. His own works generally reflect more European musical traditions—the music of Debussy is an obvious influence—but also draw on his folklore research. Saygun was a prolific 5

composer. He wrote the first Turkish opera, Özsoy, in 1934. His second string quartet was premiered in New York in 1958 by the Juilliard Quartet.

Bach likely composed the suites for one of the cellists in the court orchestra. At the time, the cello was just beginning to emerge as a solo instrument. Its predecessor, the viola da gamba, was a much softer, much less robust instrument used most often as accompaniment. The earliest works written specifically for cello were by Italian composers like Antonio Vivaldi, a contemporary of Bach. Thus Bach’s Six Suites were an innovative approach to the new instrument.

The partita encompasses five movements.

Folk elements include alternating, irregular meters in the second part, Vivo, and modal scales (that vary from classical Western ones) in the Allegretto. The open C-string motifs from the opening Lento return at the close.

Yo-Yo Ma included the Partita as part of his celebrated “Silk Road” project, an attempt to forge connections (musical and otherwise) across cultures. Ma performed Saygun’s Partita in a concert celebrating his being named a United Nations Messenger for Peace.

Bach’s own manuscript for the cello suites—the music in his hand—does not survive. One of the earliest extant manuscripts was copied by his wife, Anna Magdalena Bach, and the first published edition dates to 1825. The vast gap between composition and publication reveals just how long Bach’s music languished virtually unknown and little regarded. For nearly two centuries after their first performance, the cello suites were considered merely an assemblage of exercises for performers to develop their technique. Cellist Pablo Casals made the suites famous in the early 20th century, and Yo-Yo Ma took them up as soon as he took up the cello itself, learning his first suite at age 4. Now, of course, they are standard repertoire for all cellists, appreciated as much for their gorgeous music as their technical challenges. And a few of the movements (the Prelude of no. 1 in particular) have become ubiquitous in popular culture.

Tonight marks the first performance of this work on our series.

J. S. Bach, Suites for Solo Cello (ca. 1720) Suite No. 1 in G major, BWV 1007 Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008 Suite No. 6 in D major, BWV 1012 By the time Johann Sebastian Bach (16851750) was a teenager, he was making a living as a musician. He began as a choir singer and violinist, then took positions as an organist at cathedrals and at court. All the while, he composed his own music to suit the needs of his job. In 1717, Bach was appointed head of the chapel at the court of Anhalt-Cöthen, about thirty miles south of Leipzig. His new employer, Prince Leopold, preferred instrumental to religious music, so from this period date Bach’s orchestral suites, Brandenburg concertos, the WellTempered Clavier, and the Six Suites for solo cello, written around 1720.

Each of the Six Suites contains six dance movements. All begin with a prelude, move through the three traditional court dances (the allemande, courante, and sarabande), and end with a gigue. The sixth movement of each suite is something of a wild card: Bach inserts a more “modern” minuet in Suites nos. 1 and 2, a bourée in nos. 3 and 4, and a gavotte in nos. 5 and 6. Only 6

all of the others are written for a typical four-stringed cello. It’s still possible to play the sixth suite on a regular cello, although reaching the highest notes in the Sarabande can be difficult. Indeed, the entire suite poses many musical and technical challenges: There are bravura cadenzas, the Allemande is the longest movement of any in the Six Suites, requiring extra concentration, the first Gavotte features sweeping chords, and the final Gigue—the 36th movement of the entire set—is a brilliant, virtuosic tour-de-force.

the minuet, bourée, and gavotte were still actually danced; the allemande, courante, and sarabande had become but a set of stylized, musical conventions defined in part by meter. The allemande, in duple meter, is high-minded yet even-tempered.

The triple-meter courante is lighthearted, recalling its original hopping steps, although Baroque dance specialists argue that the music for dance would have taken a much slower pace than most cellists adopt.

A lovelorn sadness colors the sarabande, also in triple meter, but is swept away in each suite by whichever modern dance follows. And the final gigue is generally a merry barn-burner of a fiddle-tune in compound meter, which can combine triple and duple divisions.

Tonight marks the first performance of Suite No. 1 on our series.

Suite No. 2 was last performed on our series April 16, 1986 (Duo Geminiani)

Each suite has some distinguishing features. The Suite No. 1 begins with what may be the piece most closely associated with Yo-Yo Ma and may also be one of the most famous pieces for solo cello, the Prelude, which opens by showcasing the cello in its most natural state. The first gesture rises up through the deeply resonant lower strings, and the movement unfolds as a study in the resonance of the instrument itself.

Suite No. 6 was last performed on our series November 19, 1975 (Pierre Fournier, cello) O’Connor: Appalachia Waltz (1996) The title track of a 1996 album, Appalachia Waltz is the product of a collaboration with virtuosic fiddler and composer Mark O’Connor plus bassist Edgar Meyer.

O’Connor conceived the piece in 1993 while working in Santa Fe, and wrote it out nearly complete in one fell swoop. He shelved it for a few years, but it later proved the impetus for a two-album project with Ma. “It is one of my most liked pieces,” O’Connor notes, and explains why:

Despite its generally tragic cast, the Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008, ends rather joyously. The Prelude features an emotional ascent that culminates, midway, in the first chord. The movement then ends—surprisingly, for all the searching that has come before—with a series of searing chords. The Allemande is lighter, faster, and the Courante even brisker. But the Sarabande is gut-wrenching, perhaps the most emotional of all the movements in the entire set of suites.

If it’s played for folk musicians, they most often think it’s classical music. When played for classical musicians, they most often think of it as folk music. Appalachia Waltz seems to exist in the middle of places.

Each listener is embracing it on quite personal and maybe very different

terms. When Yo-Yo performs it unaccompanied as an encore to his Bach Suite recitals, there are those who think it is old and German!

When I play it unaccompanied in Southern California, it reminds people of their grandparents back in the mountains of North Carolina. Neither is true but this occurrence is one of the most important bridges I have attempted to cross. Appalachia Waltz has become one of my most important compositions, because it helped me

create and cross yet another bridge... between audience and performer.

Yo-Yo Ma has likewise tried to build such musical bridges. Describing himself as a “venture culturalist,” Ma has delved into musical traditions across the globe, from Brazilian samba to Argentine tango, Chinese folksong, and in Appalachia Waltz, traditional American fiddling.

Tonight marks the first performance of this work on our series.
