WELCOME TO OUR 65th SEASON This year we celebrate 65 years of presenting the world’s best musicians to the greater Denver community.

The Saint Lawrence Quartet will open this extraordinary season with an unusual “deconstruction” and performance of the Haydn Quartet, Op. 33, no. 3, “The Bird,” followed by a performance with perennial FCM favorite, Inon Barnatan, playing the Shostakovich Piano Quintet.

New to our series is the world-renowned Baroque orchestra, Tafelmusik, presenting “East-West Coffeehouse,” a unique program featuring music from the coffee houses of 18th century Leipzig and Damascus. Other artists making their FCM debut include the young violinist William Hagen, the award-winning Calidore Quartet, and world-class English tenor, Mark Padmore, performing with the brilliant pianist, Paul Lewis.

The Piano Series will open with the gifted piano duo, Anna Polonsky and Orion Weiss, performing works for one piano, four hands and two pianos, four hands. The legendary Sir András Schiff will perform works of Bach, Bartók, Schumann, and Janác̆ek, and Piotr Anderszewski will play Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations for the first time in our history.

Outside the concert hall, Friends of Chamber Music is proud to continue our collaboration with the Clyfford Still Museum, presenting five Sunday afternoon gallery concerts, and a second year of free weeknight concerts at Syntax Physic Opera.

ST. LAWRENCE STRING QUARTET AND INON BARNATAN, PIANO WED, SEP 12, 2018 | 7:30 PM

The acclaimed St. Lawrence String Quartet will open the 2018–19 season with “Haydn Discovery,” led by violinist Geoff Nuttall, who illuminates Haydn quartets with equal parts serious musicology and inspired evangelism. The quartet will be joined by another FCM audience favorite, pianist Inon Barnatan, for Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, performed in its entirety for the first time in FCM’s history.

WED, NOV 7, 2018 | 7:30 PM Winner of a 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and 2017 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award, the Calidore first made international headlines as Grand Prize Winner of the University of Michigan’s inaugural International M-Prize competition in 2016.

WED, JAN 16, 2019 | 7:30 PM World-class English tenor, Mark Padmore, has been hailed for his “luminous diction and sensitivity to word and phrase” (International Record Review). He will be joined by internationally-renowned pianist, Paul Lewis, in a program that includes the FCM premiere performance of Schumann’s best known song cycle, Dichterliebe.

TAFELMUSIK BAROQUE ORCHESTRA WED, MAR 6, 2019 | 7:30 PM

One of the world’s top Baroque orchestras, Tafelmusik will explore the rich musical history of 18th-century Leipzig and Damascus, reimagining the coffee houses where the finest musicians of the time played. Trio Arabica joins Tafelmusik to perform music ranging from Handel and Telemann to traditional Arabic song in a sumptuous theatrical setting.

MUSIC IN THE SCHOOLS Friends of Chamber Music believes that music education is critical to enriching the audiences of today and building the audiences of the future. Each year we engage both local and visiting artists to provide in-school performances, residencies, and master classes, serving over 4,000 Denver Public School students, all free of charge.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES

FCM schedules fun, interactive performances by local musicians, including members of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. These concerts are our most popular form of outreach, bringing the magic of chamber music to thousands of students annually.

MASTER CLASSES

FCM occasionally arranges master classes with the professional musicians who travel to Denver for our Chamber or Piano Series concerts. During our 2017–18 season, students had the opportunity to work with pianist Igor Levit and musicians from both the Berlin Philharmonic Winds and Eighth Blackbird.

FCM offers music residency programs designed to offer targeted, interactive instruction based on the specific needs of a classroom teacher. Current residency programs are serving students at Swansea Elementary School, Skinner Middle School, and North and South High Schools.
