escape the heat. Since the 30s and the old Red Car, Cabrillo Beach has been a popular choice for many local and inland Angelenos to find relief. Sometimes called “Cabrillo Coastal Park” or just “Coastal Park” by Aquarium staff, Cabrillo Beach offers a wide array of activities for visitors, from sunbathing to water sports, wildlife viewing, and more. There are two beaches to choose from: The wave swept “Outer” (outside the Harbor) Beach, watched over by Los Angeles County Lifeguards, and the protected “Inner” (inside the Harbor) Beach, under the purview of City of Los Angeles Lifeguards. Both beaches offer swim areas and specific areas for water craft. Kayaking, paddle boarding and windsurfing draw people here, with kayakers and paddle boarders mostly enjoying the calmer mornings, and windsurfers taking advantage of strong afternoon breezes.Volleyball courts are available on each of the beaches on a first-come, first-served basis. You can enjoy an evening bonfire in the fire pits on the Outer Beach, but be warned – these are often claimed very early in the day, so plan accordingly. Remember to keep an eye out for dolphin, too!

(Contact the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks for reservation details) The Inner Beach has a small playground set up, conveniently set near bathrooms and one of the picnic table areas. Got a boat? Bring it down to the Cabrillo Beach Boat Ramp at the north end of the parking lot. It’s free to launch your boat here, but if you will be leaving your vehicle in the lot, you’ll need to pay the appropriate parking fees. Be aware that the boat-trailer parking area can fill up during good weather, (continued especiallyon onpage 2) weekends. If you are up for a somewhat less conventional beach outing, bring your fishing gear and head out to the licensefree fishing pier! That’s right – you do not need a fishing license to fish off the
