During this nine-day ocean voyage we spend three exciting days anchored in San Ignacio Lagoon where friendly gray whales and their curious calves swim within arm’s length of the skiffs. Naturalist-led hikes on remote, offshore islands provide exceptional views of elephant seal rookeries, Guadalupe fur seals, a multitude of birds, diverse geological formations and a wide range of native vegetation. Thirty participants will eat well and sleep comfortably on the 113-foot Royal Polaris; leaving from San Diego (bus transportation between CMA and San Diego is provided). Cabrillo Whalewatch

Tuesday, December 26 through March 2018 DAILY! Go to sea any day of the week through the end of March in search of migrating Pacific gray whales and a host of other marine life, such as dolphins, seals and sea lions. Whalewatch naturalists, trained by CMA and the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Cetacean Society, lead two-to-three-hour boat trips from various landings. Channel Islands Adventure: Santa Cruz Island (Prisoners Harbor):

Saturday, May 4 7:30am - 5:30pm Discover the wonder of the Channel Islands as you join CMA Educators on an adventure to Santa Cruz Island, which is part of the Channel Islands National Park. We’ll cruise along the island coast; then go ashore where participants will follow along on a naturalistled hike to observe the diverse coastal habitats and panoramic views. Channel Islands Adventure: Anacapa Island

Saturday, June 1 9am - 5pm Discover the wonder of the Channel Islands as you join CMA Educators on an adventure to Anacapa Island, which is part of the Channel Islands National Park. During the crossing watch for marine birds and mammals; then join a naturalist lead guided walk through nesting gulls and their young chicks on Anacapa Island. The trip leaves from Oxnard. Discover Cabrillo Beach Coastal Park habitats and the organisms that live there. Use the tools and resources of naturalists to examine living and preserved specimens. Explore ocean wonders through immersive exhibits and hands-on activities.

Southern California Aquarium Collection

In the Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall 36 aquariums are homes to a large variety of live sea animals for up-close viewing. Learn about the many diverse marine habitats through comprehensive interpretive displays and museum collections.

Science at the Seashore Monthly Beach Cleanup

Saturday, March 2 10am - 12noon Saturday, April 6 10am - 12noon Saturday, May 4 10am - 12noon Saturday, June 1 10am - 12noon On the first Saturday of each month, join CMA Educators in helping to keep our Coastal Park eco-friendly and clean! Come find out what marine debris is doing to our ocean and help us to collect and categorize what we find on Cabrillo Beach. Little Squirts

Wednesdays, May 1, 8, 15, 22 1:30 - 3pm Grades K-1 On four consecutive Wednesday afternoons you can join CMA Educators for a series of hands-on after-school marine science adventures. Little Squirts is offered for 2-4 year olds participating with parent(s). (Little Squirts class size is limited to 10 students) Snack is no longer provided by CMA. No walk-ins please, registration is required; call 310-548-7562. Deadline to register is one week before the class begins. Fee: $30 ($27 FRIENDS members) for the series. Walk Cabrillo

Saturday, March 9 2:30 - 4:30pm Saturday, May 18 1 - 3pm Pack a snack and join a walk guided by CMA Educators who will be interpreting the various habitats of the Cabrillo Beach Coastal Park. Starting at the Aquarium courtyard, you’ll visit the native garden, salt marsh, beaches and tidepools. Along the walk you will examine fossils, native plants, beach wrack and other interesting finds. Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28 9am - 12noon Watch snails gallop and other fascinating seashore animal behavior through shoreline exploration and laboratory activities. Learn about the interesting mating rituals and biology of this curious fish. The Aquarium opens at 8pm and an auditorium program begins at 9pm, followed by guided observation at the beach, Cabrillo Beach closes at midnight. Warm clothing and a flashlight are recommended. During April and May (closed season) grunion may be observed but not touched. March, June and July are open season, when grunion may only be taken by hand. Grunion

Grunion Fish-tival

Friday, March 22 8pm - 12midnight During this special evening, you’ll be able to hatch grunion eggs, participate in grunion arts and crafts, watch a classic grunion video, interact with grunion researchers, touch live tidepool animals and see the many fish and other live animals in the Aquarium. Don’t miss your chance to test your GQ (Grunion Quotient) or guess what’s in the Grunion Mystery Box! After participating in fun grunion activities, everyone will head to the beach to observe these enchanting fish. Warm clothing is recommended. Earth Day - Take Action Day!

Saturday, April 20 9am - 12noon Our annual Earth Day Beach Cleanup! Take action to help our local environment on Earth Day! Learn about the impact of micro plastics and help clean our community’s beautiful Cabrillo Beach on #CMAtakeactionday! Fee: Free

Endangered Species Day

Saturday, May 18 Learn about our local endangered species and experience all that the Cabrillo Coastal Park has to offer with our education team! From 10am-11:30am get your feet sandy and wet observing sand crabs, kelp flies and birds while learning about the importance of and how to protect the sandy beach habitat. From 11am-1pm venture out to the Salinas de San Pedro Salt Marsh and discover the amazing diversity of animals that call this important and fragile habitat home. At 1pm, join in a two hour walk around Cabrillo Coastal Park in our “Walk Cabrillo” program learning about the natural and human history of the area while observing local threatened and endangered species. Fee: Free

Learn what you, your family and friends can do to conserve water and prevent water pollution. Take actual samples and test them to learn more about the health of our salt marsh. Coastal Park Naturalist Training

Thursdays, April 25, May 2, 9, 16 & 23 4pm - 6pm Volunteers are trained to provide interpretation and monitoring of the Cabrillo fishing pier, Salinas de San Pedro salt marsh, Cabrillo Beach Tidepools and other habitats at Cabrillo Beach. Preregistration is required as space is limited to 25 individuals. Please call 310-548-7562. Applications must be received by April 19. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Fee: $30 materials fee. Monday, March 5th applications available Friday, April 27, 2019 application due (no later than 4pm) Students entering grades 7 to 12 in the fall may apply for CMA's Summer Docent Program. Following training, students will provide tours, talks and demonstrations. Three separate programs are offered: Junior High (grades 7 - 9); Senior High (grades 10-12); Aquatic Nursery (grades 7 - 12) Limited spaces available for all programs.

Research Program Icebreaker High school and college level students Sunday, May 19 10am - 3pm All applicants to our Young Scientists Program participate in this icebreaker to get started with research in the Aquatic Nursery. Attendance through the entire event is required as staff get to know applicants in workshops and interviews. No late entry or early departure can be accommodated. Research positions require a weekly commitment for 10 months from summer 2018 to spring 2019. Spring Program Docent Training

Applications are being accepted through February 16 for volunteers in our Outdoor Classroom program which is held Tuesday through Friday mornings from April 2 through June 7. Contest winners exhibit continues through April 7 Come see the amazing winning photographs of Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalists! Each season, volunteer Whalewatch Naturalists take photographs of moments they encounter that capture the feeling of a whale watching experience. Photos are submitted for the season-end photo contest. The Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalist program is co-sponsored by Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Cetacean Society. Join the fun and become a naturalist! No experience required. Training begins the first Tuesday of October at 7pm.

Earth Day: take action day! Poster Contest Winners

April 16 through September 29 Draw or paint a message to show how you take action and care for the Earth. Winners will receive prizes and will be displayed in the Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall. Entries due by Sunday, March 31 (Grades Pre-K - 12). Come see the amazing Earth Day artwork!
