Science at the Seashore
After-School Classes
Deadline to register is one week before the class begins. On four consecutive Wednesday afternoons, join CMA Educators for a series of hands-on, after-school marine science adventures. Activities may include observing animal behavior, examining rocky shore animals at the tidepools, exploring the wonders of mud at the salt marsh and getting up-close with microscopes.
Fee: $30 ($27 Friends members) for the series and includes a program t-shirt. Financial assistance available. Space is limited and registration is required. Sorry, walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

Monthly Beach Cleanup
Join CMA’s Education Team in cleaning up the Coastal Park every first Saturday of the month. Monthly Beach Cleanups are a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn about the marine environment, all while helping out! Meet at the steps in front of the John M. Olguin Auditorium.
Free and open to all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations required for groups of 15 or more.

Walk Cabrillo
Pack a snack and join a walk guided by CMA Educators while they interpret the various habitats of the Cabrillo Beach Coastal Park. Starting in the Aquarium courtyard, you will visit the native garden, salt marsh, beaches and tidepools. Along the walk, examine fossils, native plants, beach wrack and other interesting finds.
Free and open to all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations required for groups of 15 or more.

Salt Marsh Open House
Visit Cabrillo Beach’s own wetland habitat, Salinas de San Pedro, and discover the plants and animals that call it home! Using binoculars, magnifying glasses and other tools, CMA Educators and volunteers will help you observe and explore this habitat. Or simply sit back, watch the tide change and listen to the birds and other wildlife. Free and open to all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is not required.

Public Fish Dissection
Get a closer look at the outside and inside of a fish. Join our Education Team as we investigate the internal and external anatomy of fish through a dissection demonstration. Meet in the lower courtyard, under the Coral tree. Free and open to all ages; registration is not required.

Animal Identification and Nature Journaling
Join CMA education staff as we learn how to identify common marine animals. Practice tips and techniques for nature journaling with animals that we find. All materials will be provided, including an upcycled/recycled nature journal that you can keep; you are welcome to bring your own materials if you prefer (such as pencils, colored pencils, watercolor paints and brushes). Meet in the lower courtyard; participants are welcome to join anytime throughout the experience. Free and open to all ages; registration is not required.

Tidepool Walks
Join CMA Educators on a tidepool walk to the Point Fermin Tidepools. Before the walk attend a brief informative orientation, then join the naturalist-led hike to see animals in their natural habitat. Fall Docent Training (for adults)
Docents guide schoolchildren on tours through the Exhibit Hall or on the beach, providing information and activities relating to the exhibits. Following two months of training, docents will choose one morning per week and provide tours. Primary qualifications are a desire to learn about the ocean, an interest in children and willingness to work with CMA for at least two years.
Fee: $30 (covers training and docent manual). Financial aid is available; fee subject to change. Reservations are required. Mondays, September 12 through November 14 9am-12:30pm
Voyages
Channel Islands Adventure: Santa Rosa Island
Saturday, September 10 7am-7pm
Journey with CMA’s Education staff on an adventure to Santa Rosa Island, part of the Channel Islands National Park Marine Sanctuary. Leaving from Ventura, we’ll keep an eye out for birds, pinnipeds, dolphins and whales as we make our way to and from the island. On the island, participants will join a naturalist-led hike to a small forest with one of the rarest pines in the world - the Torrey Pine. During this quick-paced 7-mile round trip hike, we will learn about past human occupation and observe the diverse coastal habitats, amazing geologic formations and panoramic views.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the amount of time we have on the island, our hike will be very strenuous.
Fee: $85 ($70 Friends members). Open to hikers 12+; any one under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations are required.
Baja Adventure

Join CMA for a trip that truly is the journey of a lifetime! During this nine-day ocean voyage, we spend three exciting days anchored in San Ignacio Lagoon, where friendly gray whales and their curious calves swim within arm’s length of the skiffs. Naturalist-led hikes on remote, offshore islands provide exceptional views of elephant seal rookeries, a multitude of birds, diverse geological formations and a wide range of native vegetation.
Whalewatch Naturalist Training (for adults)
Volunteers are trained as naturalists to narrate while on whale watching boats that depart from local landings. Observe gray whales, dolphins, sea lions and birds; naturalists may also give presentations in school classrooms. Training begins on Tuesday, October 4 and weekly classes continue through the end of March.The last day to join the program is October 11. Meet in the John M. Olguin Auditorium. Go Whale Watching!
Daily Through Mid-April
Go to sea any day of the week in search of migrating Pacific gray whales, as well as humpback and fin whales, a variety of dolphin species, sea lions, pelicans and other marine life. Cabrillo Whalewatch volunteer naturalists accompany you on two-to-three-hour boat trips from various landings. Join the fun!

You can make a difference! Adopt the Cabrillo Beach and Coastal Park by joining our beach cleanup. Spend a morning with CMA staff and other volunteers and help improve our environment. The best family Halloween party around is back and only at CMA! Sea Scare is washing ashore with lots of thrills, chills and gills! Trick-or-Treat at treat stations and the Trunk or Treat area, create Creepy Crafts, enjoy Apparitional Activities, dance like a hagfish at the Midnight Party Zone, join our Costume Contest and bring your own trick or treat bag to enter the free raffle! Aquarium Members get a special FREE early entry into the event at 6pm. Come in costume and party with the ghost (crabs), goblin (sharks), rat (fish), and vampire (squid). Sensory Sensitive Saturdays
The Aquarium strives to ensure all guests feel welcome and included during their visit and that programs are accessible to everyone. Spend some quiet time enjoying the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium on Sensory Sensitive Saturdays, the third Saturday of each month, from 10am to 12noon.
