In the Aquarium and in our classroom laboratory you will hear delightful ocean stories, touch live sea animals and make your very own special craft. Discover the diversity of crabs in our local coastal habitats as we visit the salt marsh, sandy beach and rocky shore in search of crabs and their ocean going and land dwelling relatives. Coastal Field Research

Monday, July 22 through Friday, July 26 9am - 12noon Combine Marine Biology with art as we do laboratory and field research in our daily trips to the Cabrillo Beach Coastal Park! Students will keep a field journal and participate in field research to investigate the rocky intertidal, sandy beach and mudflats through paint brushes, pen, paper, and the lens of a camera. SEA Club
Wednesdays, September 4, 11, 18, 25 3:30 - 5pm • Grades 4-6 Wednesdays, October 2, 9, 16, 23 3:30 - 5pm • Grades 2-3 In September and October, on four consecutive Wednesday afternoons join CMA Educators for a series of hands-on, afterschool marine science adventures. Activities include observing animal behavior; examining rocky shore animals at the tidepools; exploring the wonders of mud at the salt marsh and getting up-close with microscopes. Students help plan the schedule. No walk-ins please, registration is required; call 310-548-7562. Deadline to register is one week before the class begins. Come find out what marine debris is doing to our ocean and help us to collect and categorize what we find on Cabrillo Beach. Groups wishing to participate are asked to call during business hours Monday through Friday at 310-548-7562. Meet at the steps in front of the John M. Olguin Auditorium. PLEASE NOTE: Our July Monthly Beach Cleanup will be held on Friday, July 5th to clean the Trashmageddon after the 4th of July celebration! Fee: Free and open to all ages

Sunday,July 7 10am-12noon Saturday, September 14 2 - 4pm Pack a snack and join a beach walk guided by CMA Educators who will be interpreting the various habitats that you will be exploring. Starting at the Aquarium courtyard, you’ll visit the native garden, salt marsh, beaches and tidepools. Along the walk you will examine fossils, native plants, beach wrack and other interesting finds. Fee: Donations are welcome and appreciated. Reservations required for groups

11am - 1pm Saturday, June 8 Sunday, July 21 10:30am-12:30pm 2-4pm Saturday, August 10 Sunday, September 22 1-3pm Visit Cabrillo Beach’s own wetland habitat, Salinas de San Pedro, and discover the plants and animals that call it home! Using binoculars, magnifying glasses and other tools, CMA Educators and volunteers will help you observe and explore this habitat. Or simply sit back, watch the tide change and listen to the birds and other wildlife. Fee: Free and open to all ages

Aquarium Predicted Run Wednesday, June 5 8pm 11:05pm Wednesday, June 19 8pm 10:55pm Watch the silvery fish come up on the beach to spawn! Learn about the interesting mating rituals and growth of this curious fish. The Aquarium opens at 8pm and an auditorium program begins at 9, followed by guided observation at the beach. Warm clothing and a flashlight are recommended. June and July are open season, when grunion may only be taken by hand and a valid California fishing license must be displayed if you’re 16 years or older. Cabrillo Beach closes at midnight. Fee: $5 adults and $1 seniors, students and children (Friends members free)
World Ocean Day at CMA
Saturday, June 8 World Ocean Day is celebrated all over the world June 8th! Visit the Aquarium and celebrate the ocean with us, and see how important it is in our lives. Family-oriented activities like arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, animal stories, a close-up look at baby animals grown at the Aquarium and more will make this a special day for everyone. EarthEcho Water Challenge
Saturday, June 8 11am-1pm Are you ready for the EarthEcho Water Challenge? Join us as we take part in this effort to teach the importance of our most precious resource–water. Learn what you, your family and friends can do to conserve water and prevent water pollution. Take actual samples and test them to learn more about the health of our salt marsh. Spend a morning with CMA staff and other volunteers who care to improve our environment. Afterwards, wander through the Aquarium to get a closer look at the animals and habitats you helped. Sunday, August 4 9am - 12noon Join CMA staff as they search the Catalina Channel for the largest animals in the world. Channel Islands Adventure: Anacapa Island
Saturday, June 1 9am - 5pm Discover the wonder of the Channel Islands as you join CMA Educators on an adventure to Anacapa Island, which is part of the Channel Islands National Park. During the crossing watch for marine birds and mammals; then join a CMA staff naturalist lead guided walk on top of steep volcanic cliffs surrounded by amazing vistas, through unique and endemic plants and around thousands of nesting gulls. Channel Islands Adventure: Santa Rosa Island
Saturday, September 7 7:30am - 6pm Journey with CMA's Education staff on an adventure to Santa Rosa Island, the second largest of the islands in the Channel Islands National Park. Leaving from Ventura, we’ll keep an eye out for birds, pinnipeds, dolphins and whales as we make our way to and from the island. On the island, participants will follow along on a naturalist-led hike to learn about past human occupation, observe unique and endemic species within the diverse coastal habitats and witness amazing geologic formations and panoramic views that this unique island has to offer. During this nine-day ocean voyage we spend three exciting days anchored in San Ignacio Lagoon where friendly gray whales and their curious calves swim within arm’s length of the skiffs. Naturalist-led hikes on remote, offshore islands provide exceptional views of elephant seal rookeries, Guadalupe fur seals, a multitude of birds, diverse geological formations and a wide range of native vegetation. Thirty participants will eat well and sleep comfortably on the 113-foot Royal Polaris; leaving from San Diego (bus transportation between CMA and San Diego is provided). Thursdays, September 19, 26, October 3, 10 & 17 4 – 6pm Volunteers are trained to provide interpretation and monitoring of the Cabrillo fishing pier, Salinas de San Pedro salt marsh, Point Fermin Tidepools and other Cabrillo Beach habitats. Pre-registration is required to meet minimum class size of 13 students. Space is limited to 25 individuals. Please call 310-548-7562 for information and registration. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Applications must be received by September 13 Fee: $30 materials fee. Financial assistance is available.

Fall Docent Training

Mondays, September 9 through November 18 9am - 12:30pm Docents guide schoolchildren on tours through the Exhibit Hall or on the beach, providing information and activities relating to the exhibits. Following two months of training, docents will choose one morning per week to provide tours. A desire to learn about the ocean, an interest in children and willingness to work with CMA for two years are the primary qualifications. Applications will be accepted through September 3. Fee: $30 covers training and docent manual. Financial aid is available; fee subject to change.
