During this nine-day ocean voyage we spend three exciting days anchored in San Ignacio Lagoon with friendly gray whales. Naturalist-led hikes on remote, offshore islands provide exceptional views of elephant seal rookeries, Guadalupe fur seals, a multitude of birds, diverse geological formations and a wide range of native vegetation. Thirty participants will eat well and sleep comfortably on the 113foot Royal Polaris, leaving from San Diego (bus transportation between CMA and San Diego is provided). Whalewatching with Cabrillo Whalewatch
Through mid-April Go to sea in search of migrating Pacific gray whales and a host of other marine life, such as dolphins, seals and sea lions. Whalewatch naturalists, trained by CMA and the American Cetacean Society, lead two-to-three-hour boat trips from various landings. Join the excitement by calling Cabrillo Whalewatch, Tuesdays through Fridays, 8:30am to 1pm at 310-548-7770. Channel Islands Adventure: Santa Cruz Island (Prisoners Harbor) and Anacapa Island
Saturday, June 6 8:15am - 5:30pm Discover the wonders of the Channel Islands as you join CMA educators on an adventure to Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands, which are part of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. Experience the islands on naturalist-led hikes with a chance to view endemic wildlife and plants. Book Release Party - You’re Invited!
Saturday, April 4 6:00pm - 9:00pm We are pleased to present the newest edition of the Miller and Lea’s Guide to the Coastal Marine Fishes of California, a comprehensive identification guide encompassing all shallow water marine fishes within California waters. Keeping with tradition, this new version preserves the look and detailed line illustrations of the original but with over 200 additional species. Books will be available for $30. Love, Ph.D. and Julianne Kalman Passarelli, Ph.D will be followed by light refreshments and a book signing.

Activities may include observing animal behavior; examining rocky shore animals at the tidepools; exploring the wonders of mud at the salt marsh; getting up-close with microscopes, and more; students help plan the schedule. Family Sandy Beach Adventure

Wednesday, April 8 2:30 - 4:30pm All ages welcome! Explore the sandy sea shore with CMA Education Staff! This informative class designed for families and led by CMA education staff, will introduce you to the amazing animals that have adapted to live in the ever changing sandy beach habitat. Bring your towels and get ready to be wet and sandy! After our private classroom laboratory visit with microscopes and specimens, we’ll explore the shore looking for sand crabs, clams, worms, kelp flies and grunion eggs! Reserve early, class size is limited to 20 participants! Deadline to register is one week before the class begins. Fee: $5 adults, $1 children and seniors (free for Friends members). Weekend Tidepool Walks
Join us as CMA Educators conduct tours of the Point Fermin Tidepools. Before the walk attend an informative slide show in the John M. Olguin Auditorium, then join the naturalist-led hike to see animals in their natural habitat. Outdoor clothing and sneakers advised. Young children must be accompanied by an adult. Starting at the Aquarium courtyard, you’ll visit the native garden, salt marsh, beaches and tidepools. Along the walk you will examine fossils, native plants, beach wrack and other interesting finds. *Please note that the Walks on April 25 & 26 are special City Nature Challenge versions and will focus on opportunities to photograph the flora and fauna of Cabrillo Beach Coastal Park. Learn about the interesting mating rituals and biology of this curious fish. The Aquarium opens at 8pm and an auditorium program begins around 9pm, followed by guided observation at the beach, Cabrillo Beach closes at midnight. Warm clothing and a flashlight are recommended. During April and May (closed season) grunion may be observed but not touched. March, June and July are open season, when grunion may only be taken by hand. Grunion hunters, 16 years or older must have a valid California fishing license. Fee: $5 adults and $1 seniors, students and children (Friends members FREE). To join Friends call 310-548-7593.

Saturday, March 14 11 – 1pm Sunday April 12 11 – 1pm Saturday, May 30 2:15 – 4:15pm Sunday, June 14 2:15 – 4:15pm Visit Cabrillo Beach’s own wetland habitat, Salinas de San Pedro, and discover the plants and animals that call it home! Using binoculars, magnifying glasses and other tools, CMA Educators and volunteers will help you observe and explore this habitat. Or simply sit back, watch the tide change and listen to the birds and other wildlife. Fee: Free and open to all ages Session 1 -- Tuesday, June 16 and Wednesday, June 17 10 - 11:30am Session 2 -- Thursday, June 18 and Friday, June 19 10 - 11:30am Discover nature as we explore the ocean at "see" level. In the Aquarium and in our classroom laboratory you will hear delightful ocean stories, scamper like little crabs, touch live sea animals and make your very own special craft. Saturday, April 25 8pm - 12midnight During this special evening, you’ll be able to hatch grunion eggs, participate in grunion crafts, watch a classic grunion video, interact with grunion researchers, touch live tidepool animals and see the many other live animals in the Aquarium. Don’t miss your chance to test your GQ (Grunion Quotient) and play grunion games! We will have our world famous tinfoil hat raffle - create a tinfoil hat at home and wear it for a chance to win prizes! After participating in fun grunion activities, everyone will head to the beach to observe these enchanting fish. During the month of May, which is the heaviest spawning period, grunion may be observed, but not captured. Warm clothing is recommended. The cost is $5 for adults and $1 for seniors, students, and children.

Endangered Species Day
Saturday, May 16 Established in 2006 on the third Friday in May, Endangered Species Day helps to remind us of our impacts on the life of our planet. Join us as we observe this day with programs and activities to inspire hope for these species. Make sure you stop by the Aquatic Nursery where you can see live, endangered white abalone that are part of a special program to increase their numbers in the ocean. Fee: Free
World Ocean Day
Saturday, June 6 June 8 is World Oceans Day, a global day to celebrate the Ocean and that it provides for us, from oxygen and weather to food! Familyoriented activities like arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, animal stories, a close-up look of baby animals and more. Visit the Aquarium to experience up close some of the gifts the Ocean brings to us. Fee: Free
City Nature Challenge
April 24 - April 26 Participate in the City Nature Challenge! This challenge first started between Los Angeles and San Francisco in 2016 to document the biodiversity in our cities. Today, more than 150 cities around the world participate in the City Nature Challenge. Join us in the Walk Cabrillo program (Apr 25 & 26), and we’ll show you how to get PRESENTED BY started.

Sunday, June 14 2:15 – 4:15pm Are you ready for the EarthEcho Water Challenge? Join us as we take part in this effort to teach the importance of our most precious resource–water. Learn what you, your family and friends can do to conserve water and prevent water pollution. Take actual samples and test them to learn more about the health of our salt marsh. Summer Docent Program Grades 7 - 12
Monday, March 2 applications available Friday, April 24 application due (no later than 4pm) Students entering grades 7 to 12 in the fall may apply for CMA's Summer Docent Program. Following training, students will provide tours, talks and demonstrations. Three separate programs are offered: Junior High (grades 7-9); Senior High (grades 10-12); Aquatic Nursery (grades 7-12) – Limited spaces available for all programs.

Applications are being accepted through February 16 for volunteers in our Outdoor Classroom program which is held Tuesday through Friday mornings from March 29 through June 3. Teach schoolchildren about tidepool animals, whales, grunion and other local marine life – all happening outside in the world’s largest classroom.

Research Program Icebreaker High school and college level students
Sunday, April 19 10am - 8pm All applicants to our Young Scientists Program participate in this icebreaker to get started with research in the Aquatic Nursery. Attendance through the entire event is required as staff get to know applicants in workshops and interviews. No late entry or early departure can be accommodated. Contest winners exhibit continues through April 5 Come see the amazing winning photographs captured by the Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalists! Each season, volunteer Whalewatch Naturalists take photographs of moments that capture the feeling of a whale watching experience. Photos are submitted for the season-end photo contest, which are judged by local artists and marine life experts. The Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalist program is co-sponsored by the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Cetacean Society. Join the fun and become a naturalist - Training begins the first Tuesday of October at 7pm. No experience required.
