Tuesday, September 24 5 - 7pm Wear your Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops and join us for a Back to School Luau at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium! Science at the Seashore Little Squirts

Wednesdays, October 30, November 6, 13, 20 1:30 - 3pm On four consecutive Wednesday afternoons you can join CMA Educators for a series of hands-on after-school marine science adventures. Little Squirts is offered for 2 - 4 year olds participating with parent/guardian. (Little Squirts class size is limited to 10 students.) Snack is no longer provided by CMA. Starting at the Aquarium courtyard, you’ll visit the native garden, salt marsh, beaches and tidepools. Along the walk you will examine fossils, native plants, beach wrack and other interesting finds. Sunday, September 22 1 - 3pm Saturday, October 5 11am - 1pm Sunday, November 17 2 - 4pm Sunday, December 7 2 - 4pm Visit Cabrillo Beach’s own wetland habitat, Salinas de San Pedro, and discover the plants and animals that call it home! Using binoculars, magnifying glasses and other tools, CMA Educators and volunteers will help you observe and explore this habitat. Or simply sit back, watch the tide change and listen to the birds and other wildlife. Fee: Free and open to all ages

Volunteer Opportunities! Fall Docent Training
Adults
Mondays, September 9 through November 18 9am - 12:30pm Docents guide schoolchildren on tours through the Exhibit Hall or on the beach, providing information and activities relating to the exhibits. Following two months of training, docents will choose one morning per week to provide tours. A desire to learn about the ocean, an interest in children and willingness to work with CMA for two years are the primary qualifications. Applications will be accepted through September 3. Fee: $30 covers training and docent manual. Financial aid is available; fee subject to change.
Coastal Park Naturalist Training
Grade 5 through adult
Saturday, September 28 10am - 3pm Volunteers are trained to provide interpretation and monitoring of the Cabrillo fishing pier, Salinas de San Pedro salt marsh, Point Fermin Tidepools and other Cabrillo Beach habitats. Pre-registration is required to meet minimum class size of 13 students. Space is limited to 25 individuals. Please call 310-548-7562 for information and registration. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Applications must be received by September 13. Fee: $30 materials fee. Financial assistance is available.

Go Whalewatching!
Whalewatch Naturalist Training
Tuesdays, October 2019 through March 2020 7 - 9pm Volunteers (college age and up) are trained as naturalists to narrate whale watching trips on boats that depart from local landings January through March observing gray whales, dolphins, sea lions and birds. Naturalists may also give presentations in school classrooms. Meet in the John M. Olguin Auditorium. Training begins on Tuesday, October 1; the last day to join the program is October 15. December 26 through March 2019 DAILY! Go to sea any day of the week from December 26 through the end of March in search of gray whales on their migration along Southern California’s coast. Whalewatch naturalists, trained by CMA and the American Cetacean Society/Los Angeles Chapter, lead two-to-three-hour boat trips from Redondo Beach, San Pedro and Long Beach. Join the fun by calling Cabrillo Whalewatch at 310-548-7770, Tuesdays through Fridays, 8:30am to 1pm. Fee: Varies by landing

American Cetacean Society Lectures
Channel Islands Adventure: Santa Rosa Island
Saturday, September 7 7:30am - 7pm Journey with CMA's Education staff on an adventure to Santa Rosa Island, part of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. Leaving from Ventura, we’ll keep an eye out for birds, pinnipeds, dolphins and whales as we make our way to and from the island. On the island, participants will follow along on a naturalist-led hike to learn about past human occupation and observe the diverse coastal habitats, amazing geologic formations and panoramic views that this unique island has to offer. PLEASE NOTE: Island activities are very strenuous. Reservations are required; please call 310-548-7562. Fee: $82 adults, $74 seniors, $65 children ($70 Friends members)

February 26 - March 5, 2020 SOLD OUT! Stay tuned for 2021 dates! Join CMA for a trip that truly is the journey-of-a-lifetime! During this nine-day ocean voyage we spend three exciting days anchored in San Ignacio Lagoon where friendly gray whales and their curious calves swim within arm’s length of the skiffs. Naturalist-led hikes on remote, offshore islands provide exceptional views of elephant seal rookeries, Guadalupe fur seals, a multitude of birds, diverse geological formations and a wide range of native vegetation. Thirty participants will eat well and sleep comfortably on the 113-foot Royal Polaris; leaving from San Diego (bus transportation between CMA and San Diego is provided). Coastweeks: Coastal Cleanup Day
Saturday, September 21 9am - 12noon You can make a difference! Adopt Cabrillo Beach and our Coastal Park by joining our Coastal Cleanup from 9am to 12noon. Spend a morning with CMA staff and other volunteers who care to improve our environment. Afterwards, wander through the Aquarium to get a closer look at the animals and habitats you helped. Saturday, October 26 7 - 10pm *Members Only Early Entry at 6pm The best family Halloween party around is back and only at CMA! Sea Scare is washing ashore with lots of Thrills, Chills and of course Gills. Trick-or-Treat at 13 different treat stations, participate in Creepy Crafts, experience Dreadful Demonstrations, enjoy Apparitional Activities or dance like a zombie at the Zombie Party Zone. Plus, Aquarium Members get a special FREE Early Entry into the event at 6pm. So come in costume and join in on the masquerade of ghosts and goblins, it’s sure to be a frightfully good time for the whole family!

Sea Monster Poster Art Contest
October 8 through November 24 What do you think of when you hear the words “Sea Monster”? A Shark? A Serpent? A Squid? We asked students from local schools to create their idea of a Sea Monster. Come and see what they came up with! Winning posters will be on display in the Aquarium’s Susanne LawrenzMiller Exhibit Hall. If you would like to enter your own Sea Monster creation, all entries must be turned into the Aquarium by 5pm on September 27.
