EX-OFFICIO MEMBER

Andrea Blackbourn, Executive Director Floor Covering Industry Foundation

On Saturday, October 9, 2021, friends and colleagues from all parts of the flooring industry gathered for a magnificent event at The Rainbow Room in New York City.

After two postponements, we were at long last able to meet to recognize three deserving honorees and most importantly, raise money for such an important cause – The Floor Covering Industry Foundation.

Jeanne Matson, Dana Teague, and Howard Brodsky have all strived to make our industry better than they found it and each was deserving of the recognition that they received. They have all given their time to serve the FCIF and make our industry better for those most in need because of a catastrophic and in many instances, life changing medical event that has occurred in their lives.

The event was an overwhelming success on so many levels and I’m glad that you were able to join us for a celebration long overdue and for such a great cause. As stated during the evening festivities, our industry is like a large family and families take care of each other in times of need. Your generous support of the FCIF helps facilitate the help that the foundation can provide.

Please enjoy this commemorative book and may it continue to bring back memories of such a great evening had by all!

Jeanne D. Matson served as the President & CEO of Starnet Commercial Flooring from January 2007-May 2019. She currently serves as a consultant for CCA Global. Starnet is the largest purchasing cooperative of independent commercial flooring contractors in the United States and Canada. During her tenure at Starnet, the organization enjoyed strong financial growth while strategically adding new members to ensure representation in all geographies within North America. In addition, Jeanne and the Starnet team developed a comprehensive training and education program for the members and Preferred Vendors. Her focus throughout was on strengthening the partnership between both groups and advancing the commercial flooring industry overall. Prior to joining Starnet, Jeanne was an executive at the Clairol division of Procter & Gamble (P&G.) She advanced through the Brand Management system, ultimately serving as the General Manager of P&G Professional Beauty Products, a division which serviced the professional salon channel in North America.

Matson is active in her community as a volunteer EMT with Darien EMS-Post 53, serves on the Board of the Connecticut Women’s Forum, and is the Past Chairman of the Center for Hope in Greenwich, CT. Honoree 3

Dana Teague

As Vice President for Informa Markets, Dana Teague oversees a design portfolio of events, which includes The International Surface Event (TISE), the largest North American event serving the floorcovering, stone, and tile industries. TISE is comprised of three brands – SURFACES, StonExpo/Marmomac, and TileExpo. In addition, Teague manages the AIA Conference on Architecture, as well as, four design portfolio events overseas in the UK, adding a hybrid of trade and consumer events to her managed event network. Starting in the events industry nearly thirty years ago, Teague has risen from a Show Director in 1989 to the Vice President of Hanley Wood Exhibitions in 2013, which was acquired by Informa Markets in 2014. She has worked on events such as the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the International Autobody Congress & Exposition. In 2006, Dana started working on SURFACES and StonExpo, now totaling 19 years of service to the floor covering, stone, and tile industries. Her vision, team development, and leadership has brought the TISE event to its current success as the annual industry marketplace.

Professionally, Teague gives back to the industry through service on the board of the Society of Independent Show Organizers (SISO), where she currently serves as Vice President of SISO Women. She is also a member of the International Association of Exhibitions Event and a board members of the Floor Covering Industry Foundation. She has been honored as a Trade Show Executive Gold 100, Trade Show Executive Fastest 50, and as a Top 10 Woman in Flooring. Teague currently resides in Dallas, Texas.

The Floor Covering Industry Foundation gets families back on feet when their battling catastrophic injuries, severe disabilities, or other life-altering medical crises. Founded in 1981 by industry leaders, the 501(c)3 charitable non-profit helps those who have worked in the floor covering industry by providing direct grants for medical care and other basic needs.

Behind every grant, is a story of a real person who is fighting one of the hardest battles of their life.

A wonderful evening, for a most noble cause-over 200 leaders in the flooring industry gathered at the Rainbow Room to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Floor Covering Industry Foundation.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Roger Marcus who chaired the event. Roger thought of every last detail and was truly the architect of the magic. He helped us raise over $250,000 to support flooring industry workers battling catastrophic illnesses. Thank you for your vision, leadership, and superb event-planning skills!

To all the attendees-thank for being part of an extraordinary evening celebrating philanthropy in the flooring industry! You honored the lifetime accomplishments of three industry leaders–Howard Brodsky, Jeanne Matson, and Dana Teague, and you danced the night away on one of the most iconic floors in the United States. The star inlaid rotating hardwood dance floor of the Rainbow Room has been graced by presidents, dignitaries, and you! Thank you for your presence and for your investment in helping others.

Thank you to the event sponsors and donors-the Gala, along with our annual donations, are a true testament to the caring power of the floor covering industry.

In an industry in which family values run strong, it should come as no surprise that a relief fund is available to flooring workers who are experiencing a medical crisis. The Floor Covering Industry Foundation provides direct assistance to applicants who are facing a medical situation—their own or one affecting a household member–that could render them unable to work and earn income to support their needs. To qualify, recipients must have had at least five years of service to the flooring community and demonstrate a financial need. Grants can be used to help pay for medical care–everything from testing and prescriptions to hospitalization and medical equipment—or to pay for basic necessities such as food, shelter, and utilities.

I invite you to visit fcif.org to see your donation at work.

Spending his time outdoors hunting and fishing is how Jeffery liked to spend his days. However, in December of 1987 Jeffery’s life took a drastic turn due to a car accident that left him quadriplegic and wheelchair bound. Jeffery is now p aralyzed from the chest down and relies on his parents to care for him. As his parents have aged, they are unable to provide some of the strenuous care that is needed, such as dressing, bathing, and lifting. Jeffery was connected to the Floor Covering Industry Foundation by his father who worked in the flooring industry for 28 years as a customer service manager. Jeffery knew that he needed to give his parents a break as it was becoming harder for them to care for him. FCIF was able to provide a grant to assist with caregivers coming to Jeffery’s home to help with daily living activities. Jeffery shared, “receiving the grant from the Foundation has changed my life as well as my parents’ life, because it has eased the burden of them having care for me 24 hours a day. I am so thankful I found out about FCIF’s grant program which has allowed me to be more independent.”

“The Floor Covering Industry Foundation saved my life, literally,” shared Sandra who had worked for eight years for a flooring manufacturer, when she became ill. Her jobs included working as a spinner, winder, and doffer creeler. She has always enjoyed working and helping others. When she was diagnosed with liver cancer in October of 2020, she had to stop working to undergo treatment. At this time, she did not know how she was going to pay her bills and thought she was going to lose her home along with her two cats that she adores. Sandra stated, “I was on the verge of suicide when FCIF reached out to me regarding the grant.” The Foundation was able to assist Sandra by providing funds to help with medical care and household expenses, such as rent and utility payments. Sandra also shared, “The grant funding relieved a huge amount of stress, and it brought me to life again. Thank you so very much FCIF for helping my live.”
