Employee Spotlight Keitha Cassey Teller - Copperfield Keitha began as a teller at Spring Branch almost 11 years ago and now works as a teller at our Copperfield branch.

College: Planning.

Whether you’re just starting to save for your child’s college education or preparing for your child to begin college this year, there are many matters to consider before they travel to college. A lot of times parents and students alike don’t know where to start when looking ahead to the road of college. Here are a few things to consider that might help you in this journey.

By considering these things now, you will be one step ahead when it comes to being ready for college.

Saving: It’s never too early or too late to start saving for college – after all, some savings are better than no savings!

Saving for college has become easier in recent years so you can put a plan in place to build a college nest egg.

Preparing: There’s quite a bit that goes into the preparation for college. Tests, applications, decisions, etc. It can be overwhelming at times, but we can help!

Exams: Be sure your student has completed all the entrance exams required by the schools they are considering. The most common exams are the SAT and ACT. Applying and Choosing a College: Keep track of application deadlines so you don’t miss any! Apply strategically by grouping your schools into dream schools, mid-range schools, and safety schools.

Once you apply and are accepted, choosing a school can be challenging.

Some things to consider are the curriculum, quality of education, size of the school, campus life, campus security, athletics, location, housing and resources, and the most important – what does it cost? Take into consideration the cost difference between public schools vs. private schools.

Moving Day: After a college is chosen, now comes the planning for paying and moving.

Paying for college doesn’t have to be stressful – see the reverse side for details. Ask yourself these questions to prepare for the start of college: Will your student live on campus, off campus, or at home?

• If living on campus, make sure you have all the dorm essentials needed.

You can find lists of needed items at select stores that cater to college bound young adults.

• Living at home can save money, but it will not provide the same experience as living on campus.

• Living off campus in an apartment or town home can incur additional costs for utilities, insurance, etc.

Understand College Costs – make sure you plan for tuition, fees, books, living expenses, transportation, insurance, etc.

College Insurance – the unexpected can happen so this insurance will protect your student’s college education in the case of illness, injury, loss of personal property, etc. It’s worth looking into and it’s not that expensive!

Paying for College When it’s time to pay for school, the financial aid information can be hard to understand, but don’t stress. Here’s a step-by-step approach to paying for college.
