On May 4, 1942, Britten wrote to Elizabeth Mayer to tell her that on a voyage he had completed 7 Christmas Carols, mentioning that he had to relieve the boredom. These were the earliest version of his popular "Ceremony of Carols. They were first performed on Norwich castle that December by the women's voices of the Fleet Street Choir.
